Yeah the Spanish Club is quite deceiving actually. .. i take spanish lessons there every week and its actually pretty high up. People that first come go 'what?? its so tall i never knew it was this high up it looks like shit outside..'

Man the site is quite massive actually didnt realise it but from WT it shows the enormity of it.

As Meriton's World Tower and Rialto sites, Meriton Tower on Goerge St will not be shutting down apart from the public holidays and the mandatory days off enforced by the CFMEU (union). Other than that it is all systems go ( on skeleton staff).

The site was empty today :bash: but I saw two Asian guys in their teens peering over through the fence to have a look at hole and one of them asked his friend what was going to be built there

The guy replied

A carpark and a tall tower

And the guy who asked the question went

Thankyou, professor ... (the guy then used some colourful language)

I could of easily told them but I would of been at the receving end of the guy.:bash:

The speed of this hole-digging is akin to the early stages of Rialto! In other words...bloody slow!!!

So long as Meriton Tower doesnt have a massive "pause" as Rialto did (because of issues of conflict with the Cross-City Tunnel construction), it should probably be alright though, provided the construction above ground (when it finally gets to that stage) shoots up as quickly as Rialto has! :)

An indication of this is the iddy-biddy size of the track hoes down there shown in the last few pic posts or if you look through the peek-a-boo on George St where climbing_crane has torn a hole in the mesh ;).

After the footings, the cranes are put into place, the underground floors are layed and when the above ground base is constructed, then the main body of the tower should shoot up.

In this regard if Meriton and/or Seidler & Assoc. have employed trusty old Grocon (which I'm praying that it already has been) to construct this one, then no problemo!!....esp. if the Grocon-Lubeca Jump Form System ;) will be part of the process.

It will only be any floor and lift/core reconfigurations that will possibly delay any rises during construction, just for a while :) .

Perhaps this tower will spring up like the most recent Harry S design - Cove, with its unique all concrete floor by floor, instead of a core and floorplates.

Meritons hole will be 28m deep to allow the 10 floors of carpark. rialtos was also 28m deep! World towers was also 28m deep. Coves was 30m deep. seems that 100ft or 30m is about optimum depth for a skyscraper basement.

Bit too early to tell isn't it? Plus Lumiere always had a head start of sorts in terms of the hole being dug already... no?

Muse
April 12th, 2004, 10:21 AM
Yeah Fabian, I don't understand how you've come to such an early conclusion with the words "looks like" = more than likely.

There are so many, many factors to take into account. Things like which construction company is employed and what days they employ the workers to do the job, contending with Council along the way, the odd strike on site or 2, consrtuction mistakes to be rectified...

I don't mind if one tower is even a third ahead over the other in terms of height during construction. The fact is we are fetting 2 talls on a side of the street where The Summit :( has dominated for too, too - far too long! That side of George Street has been "Loserville" for as long as I can remember. My only grief is that Harry got Roma House pulled down on the Merition site - I loved that building....

Oh well, time to errr, move on....errr, I kinda guess...'spose....kinda...

haha, i was just going to comment on that "helipad" but zulu69 beat me to it. On that topic, does anyone know if any buildings in the CBD actually have a helipad on top of them? I haven't seen any, which is a pity. I guess the hospital probably does, how about the others?

In places like Brazil's Sao Paulo (pop. 10m) helicopters are the transport mode of choice for the rich and able, escaping traffic and crime on the streets below. Many buildings there have helipads and they simply hop around the tops of them to get around. Same in some other cities. I don't expect that here, but does anyone know if it's even possible?

Sorry for the off topic question!

The past couple of times I've passed the site and looked through the hole in the hessian fabric on George St that climbing_crane ripped ;), the track hoes are doing the old pass-the-rocks-n-earth-up-to-each-other trick.

That's quite a lot of rock they've moved out of there. Wonder where it's being taken too :? Possibly a land reclaim somewhere.

Geez, this one will take ages to develop! 12 months for excavations and it's not over yet! The whole Empire State building took 12 months to be erected and this sucker still hasn't started to grow! lol

Leighton are doing much better job at the Kens site - amazing construction dynamics! (the hole must have been shallow there... lol) :)

Fogive me if this is a bit of old news, however Meriton Inc. (lol) will be moving their corporate offices to Meriton Tower in the next 2 to 2 1/2 years to the commecial suites. They detracted initially to moving it to Rialto Apartments' commercial base.

This is in reagrd to their current offices in Museum Towers on Castlereagh Street.

A student who is in my architectural classes (part-time) named Helena who works for Meriton informed me about this last night during our "coffee break".

She also informed me that she works closely with Harry Triguboff and says he treats her very well (but she also says he is quite hard sometimes with other people in the industry, particularly on the phone).

well if you count the first slab which will be poured it will be 30m below ground(the first of 10 basements), thus the start of its superstructure,+ 169m above ground ,gives a grand total of 199m of harryS concrete! oh heavens above!

I wonder Culwulla maybe if you could see if anyone in Meriton needs a photographer for this site. Most sites use some elderley photographer who only turns up every 6 weeks. BT will top out before we know it. And then all too soon these towers will top out and we will be onto the next phase of skyscraper development. Who knows what the future holds? I walked past the site yesterday afternoon, and there was heaps of noise and dust coming from the hole so I managed to have a look inside.

They were jack-hammering the earth/rock ramp that was used to transport the soil out (and the crane in).

My guess is they will not start floor-plate pours until the sides of the pit are completely vertical.

You are also see from Fabian's pic that there is still a heap of crap on the pit floor, and there is no way you can pour concrete over such a loose base.

So the sooner they complete this last part of the pit, the sooner we'll see core and floor-plate rises.

The first thing we would hope to see are some kind of retaining walls, esp. at the bases of the heritage buildings on the northern side.

Meanwhile the other first things to appear are definitely the footings. Then when they are completed, the horiztonal load bearers to share the weight of a 151m tower with a multiple-storey basement. By this stage it is already pretty obvious where the core pit/s are located (A good example of this process is the Darling Park Tower 3 thread).

Then comes that grey gold. Oh yeah!!

Some of rock and dirt has been cleared over the past week, and the core is still taking shape. As seen through my observation of work on DP 3, the core doesn't appear overnight, but it takes weeks for it take shape and then rise. We just have to be a bit patient but at least it's better than looking into a hole where there is just digging, which we have put up for a year or so.

KENS is on the verge of breaking ground as well on the Kent St side with only one level to go, and it has taken six months to do so. Over that six months, there has only been digging on the Meriton Tower site, and they still have to dig.

Syd-HK, the core is taking shape but it will be several weeks before it takes off. As I said a few posts back, a bit of patience is required. Assembling a core doesn't appear overnight. After that it should begin to rise quicker. I think the materials at the bottom are for the core which they will use after the next concrete pour is done.

Yes. Slow rise indeed. They were still digging on Saturday in the very corner that we watched for months look like it was never going to be dug.

Also, it is Meriton's construction arm and not Grollo who are building it. Meriton is displayed on the crane.

This is good.

Now that Meriton are finished completing W.T. and Rialto, their good workers can just be transferred over to jobs like Meriton Tower. I was hoping it would be Grocon, but on 2nd thoughts, I'm glad it's not. Now Grocon can be freed up for other jobs around the city :)

Early this evening, finn and I saw the 2nd crane lodged between the historic buildings that front Albion Place virtually @ street level on the side of the site.

...and yes Adelarch. There is now a 2nd crane lodged near Bathurst Street on The Regent Place site closer to where lumiere will rise.

As seen with work over the past few weeks and with the hole clear (at long bloody last). It's getting ready to take off.

Haha it would be lucky to make Grade Z, this one is of his worst work so far. Avocado is just not a colour for concrete. :)

I did a sloppy little reworking of it using CorelDraw for fun , found on page 2 of this tread - I still think it knocks this tower for 6.

lol I aint that grumbly, prevention is better than the ailment half the time. Maybe if i complain enough they will just stop building it! :)

I admit I have complaining streaks and this is another one but the day I see a completely smooth 100% reflective glass geometric ediface built in Sydney will be a joyous day ;)

At least across the road is looking pretty good with it showing some interest at the base that is a cause for Sydney-wide celebration - unfortunately it will mirror this monstrocity above in its reflective panels (sigh)

Adelarch
September 23rd, 2004, 05:42 AM
Yeah but edifices of glass can be equally as monotonous and boring in the wrong settings. If you look at the context here, there are several other buildings with large amounts of glass in their façade and with very angular designs (eg Latitude and Lumiere) which will be helping to offset this design – a bit of freeform concrete might be just the trick here, although I agree that the avocado colour is suspect to say the least.
Either way category Z is a bit rich given the all the other totally crap buildings around ;)

Something interesting that I found out is that this is being built co-jointly by Meriton's construction arm and Grocon. The cranes have "Meriton" gracing them, however Grocon is also on site. Great stuff! :okay:

Which one will reach roof line first????

Muse
December 13th, 2004, 12:58 PM
Both to roof are 151m.

ATM lumiere's is still about 6/7 levels underground. So obviously Meriton's core is rising ahead of lumiere's.

Eventually it will be much of a muchness. We'll be able to look half a city block across and watch both of them rise simultaneously in a few months.

Presently the smaller 114m Frazer Suites is almost on par with this one's.
