The 2010 Summer Youth Olympics (officially known as the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games) (YOG) is an international multi-sport event for youths that will take place in the city-state of Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010, in the XXIX Olympiad. It is the inaugural event of the Youth Olympic Games, a major sports and cultural festival to be celebrated in the tradition of the Olympic Games. The Games will see 3,600 athletes between 14 and 18 years of age from all 205 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competing in 184 events in 26 sports. The decision for Singapore to host the Games was announced on 21 February 2008 after mail voting by 105 IOC members.

On 14 August 2010, some 3,600 of the world's best youth athletes will be welcomed and feted in a ceremony to mark the opening of the first Youth Olympic Games (YOG). Featuring athletes from 205 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), the Opening Ceremony of the inaugural YOG will be held on 14 Aug 2010 at 20:00 hours at The Float@Marina Bay - the world's largest floating platform located in the heart of Singapore. With Singapore "blazing the trail", the Opening Ceremony at Marina Bay serves to inaugurate the YOG. Staged against a backdrop of Singapore's spectacular city skyline that includes the Singapore Flyer and beautifully lit skyscrapers, some 5,500 young and energetic performers will inspire the world by presenting the spirit of Singapore's unique cultural diversity; and the exuberance of youth, inspiring the world through the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect.

Led by a team of talented local and international directors, the Opening Ceremony of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (Singapore 2010) promises to be a joyous celebration. The key message of the celebration chronicles the struggles and success of a young athlete in realising his dream as a professional sportsperson, in juxtaposition with those of Singapore and the Olympic Games. The highlight of the Opening Ceremony will be the lighting of the cauldron of the first Youth Olympic Flame.

Saw the youtube video on opening ceremony in Singapore last week. I was really depressed that so many people gave negative comments not only on the ceremony but on our country. They felt that we are a culture-less country and said the ceremony was lousy as the children performance were childish. These people spent so much effort in just two and a half years getting ready to receive the world (while other usual olympics have at least 7 years to prepare). These children enjoyed themselves performing for the world yet they received such comments from them. I am really disappointed and cant help but feel upset for these performers.

Thats really sad. So dissapointing.... Anyway i thought this will be useful for those who do not know the competing sports yet!!

THE first Youth Olympic Games is only at the half-way mark but in an early sign of the event's growing popularity, at least 17 countries have expressed interest in hosting future editions of summer or winter YOGs.

They are a diverse group and include the United States and others from Africa and Latin America.

Speaking to reporters at the main press centre at Marina Bay Sands on Saturday, the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Games executive director Gilbert Felli said they just had discussions with an African country.

He refused to divulge which countries were on the list, but added: 'We have had discussions with the USOC (US Olympic Committee) and some cities in the US who have the idea for the winter or summer games.'

The next summer YOG will be held in Nanjing, China, in 2014.The inaugural winter YOG will be held in Innsbruck, Austria, in 2012.

The IOC added that the popularity of the games is reaching well beyond Singapore.

The Youth Olympics' YouTube channel has already had three million hits - higher than the traffic for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. The Youth Olympics has 3,500 followers on Twitter and a popular Facebook page.
