Wow I am surprised that there is nothing on this project yet.

Was announced yesterday on TV and there is some info in today's paper. Aparently on TV they said it had already started construction - Multiplex.

$20 Million of apartments have already been sold and its still 3 weeks till the official launch!!!

Basically the facts as I know them:

$300 Million Dollar Project.
8 residential Buildings with between 500 and 600 apartments.
4 screen Cinema Complex.
Restaurants, Cafe's and Shopping.
International Cruise Ship Terminal.
Spanish and European Themed throughout.
First stage finished by the end of 2005.

Looks like a web page is coming.

I was going to start a thread on this about a month ago, after I saw and advert in the paper and discovered the website....but I guess I forgot. Anyway, depending on what the renderings look like, this has the potential to be a very interesting project, and hopefully pave the way for future transformations of wharves in the area.

Will will be so much better than the embarrassment that awaits tourists as they get off the ship!
Looks a good design, but I don't know whether I would want to live at a cruise terminal, the river views would be nice tho.

Dendy to invest in riverside cinemas
Des Partridge, film writer
27sep04

A CINEMA complex with five screens will be built within Hamilton's new $300 million Portside Wharf development for Dendy, Australia's largest independent cinema chain.

Mark Sarfaty, head of Dendy cinemas, said yesterday Dendy Portside should begin screening movies in December next year.

Dendy currently runs a two-screen operation in George St in the remodelled former George Cinema, which was dark for three years before it began screening movies under the Dendy banner in 1995.

Dendy, which operates 17 screens nationally, has been operating in Brisbane since 1990. That was when the company's founders, Lyn McCarthy and Graham Tubbenhauer (who have since sold their interests) took over the former Metro Arts cinema in Edward St.

Mr Sarfaty said the Dendy cinemas in George St would continue to operate parallel with the Dendy Portside.

"Eventually the George St cinemas will be extensively renovated," he said.

Dendy's alternative style of programming, concentrating on international independent films and arthouse movies, has drawn a loyal following.

Twelve months ago Dendy was leading contender to take over the former Hoyts-Imax cinemas at South Bank, but at the last minute the property was sold to Brisbane independent operators, the Catalano family, who also run cinemas at Bulimba and Hawthorne.

"The disappointment of missing out on acquiring the South Bank site has been diminished by our agreement with Multiplex, who are spending $300 million on the Portside development," Mr Sarfaty said.

He said Dendy would invest about $2 million in fitting out the cinemas.

Portside Wharf is a riverside residential development of eight apartment buildings totalling 350-400 apartments on a 3.26ha site at Hamilton which also will boast commercial premises and a cruise terminal for ships bringing tourists in and out of Brisbane.

"Patrons will reach the cinemas via escalators, and there'll be 350 car spaces for cinema parking," Mr Sarfaty said.

The largest cinema would seat 260 patrons and the smallest would be a boutique theatrette-style of only 50 seats.

On Saturday, Dendy George St is hosting a special screening of the multi-award-winning Australian film Newsfront to mark the release next weekend of an autobiography of director Phillip Noyce by Gold Coast academic Ingo Petzke.

Isnt there a new massive development meant to be taking place right next door as well, or is that a bit further up. I did start a thread but i cant find it and i may have started it in 'News' or something

Thats interesting. I saw this documentary on tv the other day about this new technology made in Finland involved in designing cruise ships, whereby the rudder and propellar are incorporated into a single unit making ships able to maneouver in very tight turns. Anyway they showed a cruise ship turning in the Brisbane river as an example of its maneouverability. So perhaps this new technology has something to do with the new proposal in hamilton.

it wouldnt be stupid at all, it would actually make a lot of sense.

There currently building a wharf, it wouldnt take that much effort to make sure its compatible with City Cats and have the facilities there for them. Depending on patronage they could organise it so that the City Cat only goes there on days when a cruise ship is docked so the can ferry all the tourists.

Im not saying that they shouldnt build a stop at hamilton, im just saying it would be practical to build one here as well.

I think its about time the City Cat network expanded some more, maybe get some more cats as well, If the expand it that much that the routes are becoming to long they could get a couple of express cats that are faster then the current ones.

THE new, world-class Brisbane Cruise Terminal yesterday had its first test when 500 schoolgirls put Customs and Immigration facilities through their paces.
Yesterday was also the first opportunity to grab a sneak-peak at the $400 million Portside Wharf residential, retail, restaurant and terminal development at Hamilton as it nears completion to receive its first passengers on August 29.

Multiplex Developments Australia director Shane Bulloch said the cruise terminal had been besieged with booking inquiries, with 45 liners set to berth over the next year, as well as several multimillion-dollar "super yachts".

Currently about 29 cruise ships a year arrive in Brisbane.

The terminal replaces the much criticised and dilapidated terminal at Pinkenba, which saw liners berth near a sewerage plant.

"The international cruise industry recognises that Brisbane is a gateway to Queensland's iconic tourist destinations of the Gold and Sunshine coasts," Mr Bulloch said.

"This (terminal) will see the number of ships that visit Brisbane each year treble."

The new terminal is located on a stretch of the Brisbane River that will allow 95 per cent of the current fleet of international cruise liners worldwide to access its docking facilities.

It is expected cruise ships will utilise the terminal for about 60 days a year, delivering an estimated 100,000 visitors to the city of Brisbane.

The 3 1/2 ha terminal precinct includes 400 exclusive riverside apartments, a multi-screen cinema, Brisbane's largest upmarket fresh food market, numerous restaurants and retail outlets. Australian Customs Service border compliance and enforcement director Michel Cafun said the terminal was easily the best facility in Australia.

Brisbane's Clayfield College students, acting as international visitors, assisted in a dry-run of putting Customs processing officers to the test as if they were disembarking from a cruise.

Riverfire comes to Portside Wharf

Portside wharf is to be Brisbane’s newest fireworks destination, with news that RIverfire will expand their fireworks spectacular to include a pyrotechnic display on the river directly opposite the new Portside Wharf development.

The new cruise ship wharf will become a giant viewing platform on the night with great views of the all new fireworks display, city fireworks down the river and to top it all off a giant screen will be on-site to show live coverage of the various Riverfire events along the course of the Brisbane River.

After the fireworks, sit back and enjoy a glass of wine and a sumptuous meal at one of Portside’s fine restaurants or cafes whilst soaking in the fantastic night time city and river views.

Portside steams ahead

Article from: The Courier-Mail

BRISBANE'S international cruise ship terminal has been finished ahead of time and is ready to accept its first official visitor on Tuesday morning.
The finishing touches are also being applied to the rest of Multiplex's Portside Wharf development for the big day, but those looking to get an early look at the project are welcome to head down to Hamilton for a look this weekend.

Multiplex multi-residential director Shane Bulloch is delighted with how quickly things have progressed in the $750 million development since the group launched the project in August 2004.

The landscaping is in, the shops are being stocked and one restaurant has already held its first function.

Officially the first ship is to dock sometime between 5am and 6am on Tuesday.

While the residential component of the development is not scheduled for completion yet, Mr Bulloch is confident residents in stage one will be in before Christmas.

Sales of the 171 units in the three residential buildings have been going well, with a number of notable buyers including Reg Grundy who snapped up a penthouse early in the piece for about $5 million.

The retail precinct which fronts a public plaza has eight eateries in all ranging from fish and chips to fine dining.

Dendy Portside will open with a number of movies, while fresh food markets, and retailers such as Ella Bache, Tracey Mathers and Vers are all preparing for the opening.

The wharf itself is 236m long with a water depth alongside it of 10m. It is anticipated there will be vessels using the wharf for about 60 days each year.

I work in travel and was there to check out the Pacific Star which just happened to be the day the new terminal opened up. Being honest I couldnt really understand why they only had one X-Ray machine and check-in operating but apparantly this will change. They were still fitting out all the retail and eateries at the wharf so I couldnt imagine there was a whole lot to do there on that day if you were waiting around. I guess as more stuff gets built and opens up then it will improve however if people choose to turn up 5 hours before their cruise is due to depart then theyre obviously gonna have to wait 5hrs to get onboard!!

When I was there in Feb, they sais it would be empty in a few months, assumed a few months had passed. But that yard with all the timber in it, its supposed to be the terminal extension into there. Just going on what I've been told, they showed me who they'll join them all up and it made sense so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Yes, they have been completed and I've tried a few of the restaurants there and used the Dendy Cinema. Just don't go there when a ship load of people have flooded the place.

The Terminal and Loft had already been changed to completed and I have just changed Flare and Infinity to completed. I should have done this earlier.

Had a look at the DA sometime back, and it's actually pretty average, particularly the residential aspect. I just hope the office buildings facing KS Drive are respectable.

This is Hamilton Harbour and not Portside. However there are no real designs out yet, just envelopes for the preliminary approval.

As far as I can tell nothing has happened here for several years. Are they ever going to start the next phase of development?
