About 40% of the subway route miles are above ground, 75% of that is elevated.
Manhattan is 5.6% above ground, Brooklyn: 48.8%, Bronx: 63.6%, Queens: 64.3%.

kinda tough to say man.. they may clean an area up, but really all they've done is given someone else a clean canvas..
as long as there are ppl to clean it, there will be ppl to tag it waiting right behind them..

esp with the Hip Hop culture coming back to life.. [real hip hop.. not Ja whats his face or Jenny from the block..]
graffiti is a huge part of it.. I doubt it'll ever be what it was thru the 80's and 90's, but its growing at a very trendy rate...

I love the newer trains on the 4-5-6 and L. The appearance of the train from outside is similar, but the inside is brighter and newer, there are lit route maps that track the train's progress, and the announcements are electronic. The older trains still depend on the conductor to announce the stops, and they're all too often impossible to understand.

JFK is connected by the Airtrain that brings you to the JFK subway station on the A line. LGA isn't on the subway system but reachable by bus.

cawse we likes it dirty dirty.. ha! j/k

I doubt there will ever be a super safe, or clean new york, not to the point you're thinking of anyway.. Its always been gritty and rough in areas.. Things fluctuate with the times.. Its a constant battle for the city.. and as far as the trains.. I can't speak first hand but its really quite clean, and safe depending on what line your on...

don't judge it by the pics, they really don't do it justice ..
go check it out for yourself ;) thanks for posting!

You must love the New York subway. It is dirty, covered in graffiti, loud, urban, masculine...they are everything New York. They are her soul.

And I must say, the els give you some of the best views in town. They are perfect for any visitor to the city.

I don't know the last time you were on the subway, but graffiti is non-existent and the cars are extremely clean. As for stations, thats another story. But the cars - mighty clean if you ask me. They are sometimes loud though - I'll give you that one.

Also, for those who aren't from the area, all of the cars that weren't stainless steel in the photos above are old cars that aren't in service. They are refurbished old cars that they ride around for subway fans.

All of the in-service cars, in my opinion, look mighty good considering their age and the ammount of wear they go through. Most of the cars in the above photos have been through 30, sometimes even 40, years of service.

yep, also my favorite!

BTW, I believe discovery channel has a documentary about NYC's subway. Having seen the documentary, all i can say is that the trains are very well maintenanced.

It's funny to see what they do with the old trains. They just sink the trains in a bay, making an artifical reef for marine life :)

The subway does go a long way for NYC. Ever since Mayor Robert Van Wyck placed the golden shovel in City Hall Pk in 1900, it would make most of the els become obsolete. Just last year was the centinniel of the subway. Today, it is the most reliable source of transport for NYers. BTW, here is a rare collection of the subway when it was u/c, though it won't be new for those who saw in the old NYC thread.

When NYC used to have railroads in the past, station houses were built for them. Most of them were gone after WWI, while others were taken out after WWII. Fortunately, a number of the old station houses were used for the subways. They are not neccesairly obsolete as some would think they are, though some of them were demolished. Some of the station houses that will be shown were built recently. Here are the station houses that are served by subways, and the parentheses will indicate the line(s) that serve it.

BTW, another enterance for the No 6 train at 28th St on the NY Life Bldg reads "Ineterborough Subway" in which that line goes all the way from Brooklyn Br-City Hall, in Manhattan, to Pelham Bay Pk, in The Bronx.
