I'll introduce this thread by discussing about Chatswood.

The best things?

1. Shopping Centres. Westfield, Mandarin, Lemon grove and Chatswood Chase
2. Diverse range of foods. Chinese, Indian, Lebanese...
3. Convenience store. Need to explain?

Caulfield:

1) Home of the famous horse race, the Caulfield Cup. The venue for the horse race also hosts alot of shows like the camping and caravan show, etc.

2) Very cultured, walks of all life in Caulfield, also having international students studying at Monash Uni helps, also has great restaurants, pubs and bars.

3) Location: 4 kms from Australia's biggest shopping centre in Chadstone, 7 kms from St Kilda/beaches, 12 kms from the city of Melbourne.

It's a Locality isn't it.

Living on the cities outskirts is great - or it can be.

Nice quite surrounds
Birds and animals
An interesting relationship to an urban area - usually everything is off to one direction.
The Stars and the glow of lights over the nearby metropolis.
That quitet 'roar' from a great distance that becomes part of the background noise.
The changes in urban landscape as you drive in.

There are lots of great things about living on the outskirts of a major city - I used to live in Cashmere.

@Jimmy James - Thats a very good way of putting it 'all houses no services'. Its not like theyre is no spare land here either, they could put ina set of shops, and a bus stop on the main road. Its quite annoying.

Allow me then to promote the advantages of my suburb. Sachsenhäusen, Frankfurt.

• Excellent transport network. Closest station Südbahnhof (or South Station), has three underground lines, four suburban lines, three commuter lines and four tram lines passing through. And is only three stops on the underground to the CBD shopping area.
• Great selection of bars and restaurants, more than 200 within 15minutes walk
• Can walk to city center in 25minutes
• Can walk to river park in 15minutes
• Airport is close by, but no aircraft noise (and a dedicated bus from Südbahnhof with no change, or by rail but have to change)
• Very little crime (despite the enormous amount of pubs – see above)
• Easy walk to city forest (opposite direction to the city naturally, and is part of the green belt around Frankfurt)
• Medium to high density living almost throughout.

I still feel a strong connection to my old Sydney suburb, so if it's ok (really I don't care if it is ok...) I will do for both old and new....

Northmead, NSW:
1. Buses, 2min walk to bus every 5 mins to Parramatta, Parramatta is only a 30 min walk away. 20 min walk to M2 express bus to Sydney CBD

2. Surroundings- Darling Mills Creek, surrounded by forest all the way to Lake Parramatta, and up to somewhere around Pennant Hills (good except for the bushfires...)

3. The people, and restaurants- with Parramatta being so close, and the number of medium-density housing increasing, there is a great cross-section of cultures in Northmead, and of course in Parramatta are all the cafes, restaurants and bars, including the 24 hour possibilities of City Extra, McDonalds and Star Marts and BP Expresses.

Haarlem (Noord), Netherlands:

1. Everything close by- big supermarket 10 min walk away, or 4 mins on bike, train station the same (opposite direction), bus out the front every 10-15 mins to Haarlem centre. Amsterdam is 25 mins away by the train. Schiphol Airport (4th biggest/busiest in Europe) is only 15 km away, and no noise from it.

2. Surroundings- not a single detached house in the district, all apartments/terrace type dwellings, as a result, across the road are open fields and a little further the forests of the sand dunes (20 min walk) leading to the beaches 1.5 hour walk away.

3. The weather- ok definitely not as good (for my tastes) as living in Sydney, but for dutch locations, is lot more temperate as a result of being close to the sea.

Cheers

Dunedin NZ, Suburb; Waverley.
1. Great views of the city and harbour
2. Shops, 5 min walk
3. Primary school, 3 mins walk
4. Nearest pub, 5 mins drive
5. Nearest supermarket, 5 mins drive
6. Nearest highschool, 30 mins walk, 5 mins drive\
7. CBD, 10 mins drive
8. Nearest beach, 10 mins drive
9. Every house had a driveway and garage. Nearly no on street parking.

Den Haag (The Hague), Netherlands, Suburb; Laak.

1. 2 shops open till midnight 5 min walk.
2. Tramline(s) 5 min walk
3. City centre, 25min walk, 10 min bike
4. Work, 25min bike, 15min car
5. Supermarket, 10 min walk, 3 min car (parking on street)
6. Train station, 15 min walk, 10 min tram, 7 min bike.
7. Fast food, 3x in 5 mins walk
8. Motorway, 7 mins drive
As with ParraMan; No detached housing (I live in an appartment with 1 above, 1 below. 1940s). Combination of terrace housing and appartment (not highrise). Terrible parking (italian style, there is no such thing as illegal). Lots of trees lining the (skinny) streets.

One downside. Laak is one of Holland's greatest football neighbourhoods. The main streets all get blocked off by the police after important games as the populous spills out onto the streets to either rejoyce or destroy. Luckily I live in a quiet side street.

Melbourne, Wonga Park:
Quiet.
Simple. (Butcher, convenience store, bakery, deli, hairdresser and general store - including cellar).
Some would consider it rural. But it's a good mix. I like it a lot.

Interesting story about our general story: In 1997 it sold the most beer for any liquor shop in the state. I'm sure there would've been exclusions such as Dan Murphy's et al (if they were around then), but this is accurate. Remember reading it in the paper. Also, in the same year I think the property values were, on average, in the top 3 in the state for a suburb. But, back then I believed Santa existed, the tooth fairy would nip under my pillow at night and give me money and I still pooped my pants. I was 13.

-pubs, resturants, shops galore
-has awsome bushland surrounding the area(karawartha? forest)

The other great thing is that 10min in one direction and im in empty paddocks while in the other direction its urban brisbane

Footscray, Melbourne:

The good things:

10 minute walk to the station, train to town every 10 minutes, and it's just a 10 minute trip there: and our own tram!
excellent views of the CBD right from the front gate or the back window
right on the Maribyrnong Trail: I can walk untrammelled by cars all the way to Keilor or Williamstown
cheap foodstuffs & clothing
excellent Vietnamese resturaunts
the local library: & the Gardens!

the bad things:

hoons who kick on your door in the night, ringbark the street-trees, dig up paving-stones to throw at cars and at windows, and make lewd suggestions and threats to your girl-friend
cops, who despite repeated complaints, don't care.
local council staff who turn a blind eye to seats & fire-hydrants being dismembered & won't enforce local by-laws.
piles of rubbish deposited by aforementioned hoons.

Bowen Hills is a funny suburb. Its quite industrial and there are practically no shops - only ones that open during business hours.

I have major traffic close by which is interesting, not good or bad but interesting as there is always something going on. I also have a view of the ICB and can see 'some' of the city skyline which looks amazing in the morning with reflections off waterfront place.

I have a Torrefazione (Di Bella) over the road and one about 5 minutes away (Merlo) so my place is often enveloped in the smell of roasting coffee.

I also have a major railway station over the road too.

I'm a fair bit older than Nick Daffy and Essendon has been my team since I was a kid and attended most games in one of the stands at Windy hill.

Daffy is my old school nickname which relates to my surname (an unusal Scottish name) and the little black duck on TV. My kids are still in primary school and are likely to cop a less friendly nickname due to the Simpsons.

I was born in Ballarat. All my family grew up there, and my Aunt & My Great Grand-parents lived in Sebastapol, but the latter two were dead before I was born, he of "miner's disease".

Ballarat Suburbs I remember were : Sebastapol, Redan, Mount Pleasant, Wendouree, Black Hill, Brown Hill, and indeed Sovereign Hill before it became a theme park, Canadian, Buninyong and so on. There were also big distinctions between "Ballarat East" and Ballarat West", and places like "White Flat" and "The Black Arch", which, while maybe not suburbs, were at least localities. So of course, was "Eureka" ...

Apart from Buninyong (which had a railway) these were places you could walk to or get to by tram: not sure what counts as a suburb these days. Warrenheip? Bungaree?

LOL. The negative outweights the positives in my suburb.

Auburn,

Positive
1. 22min train trip to Central.
2. Chinese, African, ME and Kazakastani people in one suburb.
3. Cheap grocery shopping.

Nagative
1. Way too many people fresh from foreign country who can't speak English nor know common sense. Every week the block is evacuated because people burn their dinner and trigger the water sprinkler from units. So they take the battery out not knowing that it triggers alarm as well. Smoking in a lift, blocking emergency stairs, letting security door open because they lost the entrance pass. And so on.
2. Different ethnic groups don't integrate. ME can't eat Chinese because it's not halal food, Chinese don't go to ME restaurants because there's no 'fung shuai'.
3. Treat me like as if i work for trades using words like 'yous', 'brother', and other crap dumb talk.
4. Proximity to North Shore.

But considering i leave home early and come home at 6pm...i guess i can handle it. Big drop from where i used to live but...

Hey I live in Auburn too,

I used to lived in Straitfield and Parramatta so i can tolerate the "fobs"

3 best things
Auburn
1. Cheap rent
2. Cheap food
3. City Views from my apartment

Straitfield
1. It's a wireless internet hotspot!
2. Relatively safe area
3. High housing prices (If you own property)

Parramatta
1. Ethnic Mix (It even has a lil china town - on the other end of Church St)
2. Parramatta Westfields
3. Family :(

Pakenham (Victoria)
1. There so much space and greenery
2. New infrastructures, the roads are sooo smooth compared to Sydney
3. Close knit community (Hate the community gossips though)

Yeah Auburn is crap, but I study and work all day so I dont have to deal with many people. But I hate the kids that live there!!!

Now that I started my rambling, I dunno if your in block of apartments, but have u seen the residental parking (red underground parking space)?

There are about 5 cars that's smashed, and had everything stolen and left to rust. I think someone's being dodgy in those apartments...... :runaway:

OMG!!!

You're the only person in SSC or any of my friends whatsoever who understands how shit is Auburn.

*Me Cries*

I study/uni 4 days a week and fill the non-uni days with other activities so i don't spend much time here.

Is that the one at Auburn Central? Underneath Woolies?

Highton (Geelong):
1. Relatively isolated from the rest of bogan Geelong
2. see above
3. 15 mins to Torquay

North Ryde (Sydney)
1. Walking Distance to Uni
2. Mac Centre
3. Nearby dense bushland (not such a positive when you have raging bushfires bearing down on you....)

Castle Hill (Sydney)
1. Beautiful natural bushland (for a relatively built up suburb)
2. Castle Towers
3. Oakhill College...

Dutton Park
1) train, bus, ferry within 10min walk
2) walking distance to uni (if i'm at that campus), work, the city and South Bank
3) the area is relatively multicultural, but quite close to the shopping/cafe precinct of West End.

Blackburn - Melbourne

- I can afford it - however that was 4 years ago though (not on current price to buy a three bedroom house)
- Leafy area, hilly and nice surrounding - with beautiful homes around, shops and my gym is close by
- Trains run every 5 minutes from my station and plenty of seats available

and
- close to Eastern Freeway (no E-tag) - 18-20 minutes drive away to Lygon St or Hoddle St !

Mount Barker, sorta Adelaide

GOOD
- Very close to the Adelaide CBD
- Close to the beautiful Adelaide Hills towns and villiages (such as Strathalybn, Hahndorf, Aldgate and Stirling).
- Heaps of Retail Developments
- Lush Green Hills which surround Mt Barker
- Australias fastest inland growing region
- Mt Barker has alot of historic buildings

BAD
- Road System (Mt Barkers roads are very narrow and dangarous)
- Traffic Congestion
- Crap Public Transport System
- Too Many Ferals, lol
- No Nightlife
- Pathways (especially in the town centre)
- theres sheep in the CBD aka town centre, lol

my hometown Mildura, Victoria

GOOD
- Fantastic Shopping (especially for a city only having 30,000ppl)
- Road System (most roads are very wide)
- Heaps of Restaurants and Cafes
- Tourist Attractions (such as the Aquacoaster/ Putt Putt, Woodsies, Snakes N Laders)

BAD
- Shocking Crime rate, Mildura has Victorias worst nightclub (O'Malleys) outside Melbourne
- Average Public Transport System
- No Passenger trains to Melbourne nor Adelaide
- Average Nightlife

West End, Brisbane

1. City Cat, river, heritage, and parks.
2. Amazing vibe of chilled out people, multitude of cultures and people co-existing in peace.
3. The best specialty shops and restaurants in town, with down to earth local owners.
4. I'll go for a fourth one, the most non-pretentious, left-wing "trendy" precinct in Brisbane.

AtD: crawf is always doing retarded things like that, haha :jk:

theres sheep in the CBD aka town centre, lol
ive never seen sheep in the parklands...but there are horses: just east of North Adelaide. i think its rather funny!

dont see it as a bad thing though, its nice to have animals roaming around that close to the CBD, there wouldnt be many first world cities where there are horses kept privately in its parks.

Midland, Western Australia

GOOD

- Close to WA's Premier Wine Region, Swan Valley and Historical Guildford
- Close to the Hills (John Forrest National Park and Mundaring Weir)
- Plenty of heritage buildings
- Large Major Shopping Centre (Midland Gate), the only shopping centre in the southern hemisphere to have 3 Discount Department Stores in one centre (Kmart, Target and Big W)
- Growing variety of retail outlets through the City Centre

BAD

- Road System (Bad Planning!)
- No Nightlife
- Main City Centre has no life at all from Friday at 5pm till Monday morning at 9am
- Anti-Social Behaviour (Street Drinking)

Aspley, Brisbane

1. Frequent PT, both bus and nearby train
2. Only 12km from CBD
3. Is a major destination and has a large business area with EVERYTHING nearby.

Albany Creek, Brisbane (My old hood)

1. Huge young ppl demographic with 15-25 year olds being dominant age bracket supported by middle class families. Awesome community spirit
2. Has everything you want such as shops & food plus things you wouldnt call attractions but are cool like the river and the state forest. many great memories of summers at the river.
3. Best Rugby League Club in Brisbane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go the Crushers!

^^ That's funny. Southland has Kmart, Target and Big W too. They also have Best & Less if you class that as much the same thing.

As for my good things about my suburb: Brunswick East

1. Is evidently close to Brunswick and all the associated benefits of that suburb (supermarkets, trains, sydney road, eateries, etc). Ditto for proximity to Carlton and Fitzroy.
2. Is a less than 5 min walk to either of two seperate tram lines into the city. One of these lines has two routes on it (so twice normal frequency), while the other one always has the nice shiny new trams :)
3. Is only about 2-3km from the city centre.
4. Huge big park short walk away.

It's in South East Qld.

It's not Inala.

It's an excellent location.

Potts Point

Good things:
1, the view, I look out across the botanic gardens to the harbour, the Opera House, the Bridge and the Northern CBD.

2, so close to everything, can walk to work in the city in 20 mins, train station in my
street, beautiful harbouside gardens and parks nearby,

3, Lively streets, day and night. Late night woolies and coles, cafes, restaurants, pubs, clubs and cinemas all walking distance.

Bad things,

1. Parking, especially Friday and saturday nights.
2. The Cross on weekends, just ferral.

Sydney City:

1) I don’t need a car and I also very rarely use public transport

That’s about it really - city living is actually pretty crap! But if i had to try to say some more:

2) the contrast of different people (1) workers (2) crazy homeless people (3) students (4) drug addicts (5) shoppers

3) easy to get to gym and of course the parks!

Bad things
1) George Street Friday or Saturday night - very similar to Chapel street Mel - horrible
2) The noise
3) Working, living, shopping and pretty much everything else in the same place - so depressing really
