The deployment came just as a United States combat ship, the USS Robert G. Bradley, arrived Nigeria with 205 officers and men of the United States Navy. The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogbor, said the vessel with its crew of 15 officers and 190 men, would be spending 10 days in Lagos. The FOC said that the NNS Nwamba, Obula and Kyanwa were deployed to the Gulf of Guinea before the botched elections to protect Nigeria’s strategic interest in the area. He said the US war ship, while in Nigeria, will embark on a military exercise with the Nigerian Navy to see the areas of weakness and strength of both naval forces. USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG-49), is an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate and attached to the United States Navy. It is named after Lieutenant Robert G. Bradley who was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously for his heroism on USS Princeton (CVL-23) during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Robert G. Bradley’s keel was laid down by Bath Iron Works Corp., Bath, Maine, on 28 December 1982. She was launched 13 August 1983; commissioned 30 June 1984. Ship is homeported in Mayport, Florida. Daily Sun learnt that the vessel was attached to the African Partnership Station (APS), which was an international initiative developed by United States Naval Forces Europe-Africa. It works in cooperation with the U.S. and international partners to improve maritime safety and security in Africa as part of US Africa Command’s Security Cooperation programme. A Statement from the vessel’s information unit said sailors aboard Bradley would conduct maritime training, participate in military-to-military sporting events, and host community relations projects during their port visit. The state said the “programme helps strengthen our relationships with our African partners and allow us to interact with host nation’s civilians and military,” said Chief Logistics Specialist Ed Lafond, Programme coordinator aboard Robert G. Bradley. “For some of the Sailors this is the first time for them to interact with the host nation civilians and is an opportunity for them to have a good time helping others and see sights other than what they would see on a tour.” APS training conducted with the Nigerian Navy It said will cover areas in visit, board, search and seizure team operations; search and rescue planning; damage control and signals familiarization. These areas of training were selected with the assistance of Nigerian officials to better enhance maritime safety and security along the coast of West and Central Africa. The three high speed boats were operated on Tuesday at the Naval base, Apapa, Lagos. The vessels were fitted with high calibre arms and ammunition and have the capacity to chase and overtake sea pirates and illegal oil smugglers. The Commanding Officer, Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft, Apapa, Jonathan Ango, at the launch of the vessels, said they will halt criminality in the seas, following the twin attacks on two ships, MT Dominia and MT Ocean mariner early this year. He added that criminals on the sea will have a hard time as the Nigerian Navy is statutorily responsible to protect and preserve the country’s enormous natural deposits including installations. “You will agree with me that the mainstay of the Nigerian economy is down in the maritime environment; where we have the oil and gas which serve as the main trust and the boost to our economy,” he said. “And the Nigerian Navy which is statutorily recognized and tasked for the protection of all the resources within the maritime environment have been striving since inception to do just that. And of recent, we have had major attacks on ships by pirates which hijacked the ships, carried their products and attempted to sell them; but we were lucky and managed through our studious and effective co-ordinated approach to duties were able to arrest them and they are presently undergoing thorough investigation.” Zero tolerance He also stated that the Nigeria Navy is serious in ensuring zero tolerance to all form of criminal activities on the waterways adding that an end has come for sea pirates on the nation’s waterways. “Since assumption in office, the present chief of naval staff has as one of his visions to emplace a capable, well motivated navy that is capable of effectively combating maritime crimes within the Nigerian maritime domain in particular and the West African maritime environment in general to ensure the safety, comfort and progress of the Nigerian people,” he said. “In this regards, he has made giant strides towards placing a functional and effective navy one of which is the launching of the three combat boats on display today. These combat boats were procured from Vietnam and are highly capable and equipped to combat any form of maritime threat or challenge; such as piracy, bunkering, and smuggling and fishery protection. The new acquisition, which we call the mantra boats, are very high speed, well equipped and manoeuvrable.” The new boats will patrol Lagos waters but would also be employed in the Niger Delta and the eastern regions to complement the efforts of those already deployed there. To fight wars ? With no credible Air Defence only anti-aircraft guns which would be effective against choppers NOT fighter jets And since it got delivered last year 2 were lost :ohno: the first one the pilot didnt get to eject and died sadly the second both pilots ejected - and they still dont know why We suppose to have an air defence we dont The Military cant deal with MEND they end up destroying villages The Navy went to sea last year with rusted ammunitions and the remaining of the armaments ? They dont have Some of the ex-military men joined MEND and dealt with the army as some have not being payed pensions and the others the pension is too small to take care of their family - Some soldiers dont have accomondation - We need to get out of the UN peacekeeping we spend Billions of $ on nothing not helping us at all , The army dont have a good tank only false rumours of a t-72 which we dont have only one outdated vickers MBT the f-7's armaments missiles and bombs are all but little not enough to last a week of air strikes, in fact days not weeks - then the f 7 would be useless I see mi-35 A LOT, but no armament i wonder if we have in the first place - The Traning schools in the Army (we have 40 of them 0r 42 ) are in a bad state with no equipments or in some cases few outdated equipments and are starved of funds, Some soldiers pertake in Robbery to get more money - Solution: Stop buying of equipments for the time being Fix the internal affairs increase the salary and the pension Have better training schools and give the soldiers better training - Give them better accoodation - Have fuel depots within the barracks even the air forces bases ( MOST ) dont and barrack for armoured cars dont have a fuel depot the soldiers go to public one and therefore think thy are superior and dont obey the queque if you oppose they beat you up, - Be defensive firstly buy air defence system S-300 if Russia denies us the anti-stealth s-400 -Buy MANPADS, the Igla not they useless Blowpipe we have -Get Anti-tanks missile -STOP USING the Ak-47 even the special forces use AK-47 rubbish and nigeria's special forces is the only i know that uses an assaut rifle as their primary weapon -Buy a Russian frihgate with the P-800 yakhont anti-ship missile no warship can survive an attack from the Yakhont allhavoc May 16th, 2011, 03:54 PM So annoying the new Layout THe Modeators are standard mutherfuckers Uncalled for. The Mig-21 is out of production so to increase numbers they bought the F-7. The F-7 is there to maintain the skills of Nigeria's fast jet pilots until a more capable aircraft can be purchased later. Edward H. Lundquist, U.S. Navy (Ret.) on April 26, 2011 An admiral in the Nigerian Navy told attendees at a conference on Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) that the nations in the area of the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) on the west coast of Africa have a need for 20 offshore patrol vessels (OPVs). OPVs are generally smaller than corvettes but have the ability to patrol far from shore. The Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC) was established in 2001, with its headquarters based in Angola. The GGC includes the eight nations of Angola, Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Sao Tome and Principe. Rear Adm. D.J. Ezeoba, former chief of training and operations for the Nigerian navy and presently the chief of administration at defence headquarters (DHQ), told delegates at the IQPC 4th annual OPV Asia Pacific Conference in Singapore that the GGC nations must work together for their collective security and called for the eight nations to acquire OPVs. The Gulf is an area rich with resources, including vast oil deposits. It is also a region where the Exclusive Economic Zones of those nations overlap. So the GGC provides a platform for economic cooperation and a mechanism for conflict resolution particularly as they involve exploration and exploitation of oil and fisheries resources. “The global village in which we live in today make it very difficult to have boundaries,” Ezeoba said. The hydrocarbon reserves in the region are not only abundant, but very low in sulphur content which makes them even more attractive. Ezeoba acknowledges there are security challenges in the region, such as piracy and illegal fishing, and that all GGC nations share a role in the collective security and stability of the region because their fortunes are tied so closely together. The nations in the region must contend with the challenges of poverty and political instability and have limited resources to provide adequate maritime domain awareness and security by themselves. Through “syndication of funds to drive the acquisition process,” Ezeoba said that the GGC nations need a phased and timely acquisition of OPVs through a strategic partnership.” The 20 ships should be acquired “within a five to ten year plan period,” he said. Ezeoba said the ships could be of foreign design or construction, but that the approach should include “local content” and utilization of local shipyards to develop their local industrial capabilities. The ships might be of different sizes, capabilities and complexities. “It is not a ‘one jacket fits all sizes’ approach.” Although he was speaking for himself, Ezeoba said the Nigerian Navy would be willing to lead the way with starting the program and ordering the first ships. Rdokoye May 26th, 2011, 12:05 PM ROYAL NAVY'S 847 NAVAL AIR SQUADRON TRAIN IN NIGERIA Lynx helicopters from 847 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) have been helping to train Nigeria Armed Forces. As part of HMS Ocean’s embarked Squadrons they visited the Joint Maritime Security Training Centre (JMSTC) in Lagos while the ship visited the country. While HMS Ocean was berthed alongside, conducting diplomatic work, military training and out-reach work in local communities, the ship’s TAG assisted in training ashore. The first task was to take part in the Nigerian Navy Fleet Review to celebrate Nigeria’s 50th anniversary of their independence from the Britain. Two Lynx helicopters joined a formation of three Nigerian Navy Air Arm helicopters as their President reviewed the assembled fleet. The following day aircraft conducted trooping training with Nigerian maritime security personnel. This involved familiarisation with the British Lynx helicopters, followed by trooping flights with small teams of soldiers. The Nigerian personnel based at the JMSTC were being trained by a small team of international military instructors. On the anniversary of their independence the centre was officially handed over to the Nigerian training team. As HMS Ocean was due to depart Lagos the embarked Squadrons were instructed to be on standby for counter piracy operations. Utilising the wide range of experience within the 847 NAS the aircrew and aircraft were rapidly prepared. For three days the aircrew, aircraft and maintainers were poised to conduct flying at short notice. Ultimately the necessity did not arise. 847 NAS has had a small detachment embarked on HMS Ocean since the start of June. The Lynx Mk7 battlefield helicopters were initially joined by their sister Commando Helicopter Force (CHF) ‘Jungly’ Sea King Mk4 support helicopters. After the large scale AURIGA amphibious exercise off America the Sea Kings of returned to the UK to deploy on operations in Afghanistan. The embarked Squadron was then joined by a flight of Lynx Mk3 Maritime helicopters for counter-piracy and counter-trafficking operations. HMS Ocean and the TAG are now sailing towards Sierra Leone to conduct further military training and maritime security patrol. general weird May 29th, 2011, 04:43 PM what variant of t 55 tank does nigeria use? According to NN authorities, the firm is also expected to put up building facilities at the Naval Dockyard in Lagos that would make the yard a leading ship building and repairing destination in the world. Signing the agreement yesterday at the Navy Headquarters in Abuja, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Ola Sa'ad Ibrahim revealed that the project had already commenced, adding that when completed the facilities would provide training for officers and men of the service in unprecedented ways. The navy boss who was represented by his Chief of Policy and Plans, Rear Admiral James Oladimeji said, "The Company is to undertake operation and management of ship building, repair and maintenance of vessels in this country. "Of course, the facilities would provide additional training for the personnel of the Nigerian navy and also make the naval dockyard a world leading ship building and repairing destination in the world". In his remarks, Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr Harold Kraff assured that the partnership would go a long to improve the economy of the nation by creating more job opportunities. Rdokoye June 8th, 2011, 06:45 PM http://i55.tinypic.com/2chnzuh.jpg John Togo in 2010 (file photo). Vanguard (Lagos) Nigeria: How JTF Exhumed the Body of John Togo Emma Amaize 4 June 2011 On Wednesday, May 25, while a large cache of arms and ammunition, including 1,798 rifles, one 1981 assorted guns and 70 rocket propelled grenades, recovered from militants in Delta, Bayelsa and Ondo states were being destroyed at the Headquarters of the 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, men of the Joint Task Force, JTF, on the Niger-Delta embarked on an off the cuff and dangerous operation. Saturday Vanguard learnt that the top secret mission to a riverine community in Delta state was led by a senior army officer from Sector 1 Command of the JTF in Warri, and by the time they ended, the soldiers were with the dead body of one of the most wanted militant leader by the task force, "General" John Togo, leader of the Niger-Delta Liberation Force, NDLF, which they exhumed from the furtive grave he was interred. It was a job well executed by the task force because before now, the whereabouts of John Togo had become an embarrassment to the task force following media reports that he was dead, which the JTF dismissed as tissues of lies. General' John Togo As at Friday, the remains of Togo, which were deposited in the mortuary of the Central Hospital, were being guarded by soldiers, who had cordoned off the place for fear that his men would take the corpse away from the morgue. It was not only the JTF that dismissed the news of the death of John Togo earlier. The spokesman of the disbanded militant group, "Captain" Mark Anthony, on May 16, stated, "Gen John Togo is hale and hearty. He has left for an undisclosed fishing hamlet in a different Niger_Delta coastal state waiting for Mr. President's statement". But one of the dependable sources in the creeks called on May 16 to confide in Saturday Vanguard that John Togo was dead but JTF spokesman, Lt. Col T.A. Antigha dismissed the story when he was contacted, same day, on Togo's death. He said it was a yawn by Togo and his managers to deceive the public and divert the attention of the task force from the manhunt for the militant leader. After cross_checking the delicate information with our contacts, one of who confirmed that Togo was dead and buried, Vanguard, May 18, published a story, captioned, "John Togo feared dead" The report stated, "Militant leader, "General" John Togo of the Niger_Delta Liberation Force, NDLF, is feared dead in a battle with the Joint Task Force, JTF, on the Niger_Delta". "He was suspected to have been shot and wounded seriously on the leg by soldiers, last week, unknown to the authorities of task force, who have not relaxed the manhunt for him. A reliable source said John Togo was rushed to a riverine community in Bomadi local government area of Delta state for treatment by a traditional medicine man, but he gave up the ghost two days later". "Our source who is an indigene of the community said, "John Togo is dead and buried. He was shot on both legs and rushed to the community, his men did not believe he would die but he died. People in the community know but nobody wants to say it because of the consequences. As I speak to you, soldiers are in my community looking for information on John Togo", he said. However, many persons and organizations disbelieved the Vanguard story just as calls kept coming to editors on the authenticity of the story. On May 22, Sunday Vanguard came out with a report captioned, "How JTF bombed John Togo go death". The story read in part, "Ex_militant leader, leader and commander of the Niger_Delta Liberation Force, NDLF, "General" John Togo died a painful and miserable death following injury he sustained in an aerial bombardment by the Joint Task Force, JTF, on the Niger_Delta". Besides the security agencies, some professional colleagues doubted the veracity of our story but Vanguard remained undaunted and followed up with a report, "John Togo allegedly buried in the forest". The paper reported, "Leader of the Niger_Delta Liberation Force, "General" John Togo, suspected to have died of gunshot wounds he sustained in an encounter with the Joint Task Force, JTF, on the Niger_Delta, was reportedly buried in the forest by his boys at the outskirt of a riverine community in Bomadi local government area of Delta State'. "Our source who maintained that the militant leader was dead contrary to the claim of the NDLF spokesman, "Captain" Mark Anthony that he was alive and hearty, said, "Only the boys who took him to the secret place for burial can identify the place he was buried. He said most of John Togo's boys who also sustained gunshot wounds ran to Efanna, Ezebiri and Ogodobiri communities for treatment but they usually melted into the thin air once they heard that the JTF had come to any of the communities." It was on May 26, exactly eight days after Vanguard broke the story of Togo's death that the task force finally found the grave where he was buried in the forest as we reported and the corpse was exhumed and deposited in the morgue of Central Hospital, Warri. Two days after, there was no official word yet from the task force on whose remains it was, but a military source confided in Saturday Vanguard that it was that of John Togo quite alright. He, however, said a DNA test might be carried out to find out the biological characteristics, as the task force could not declare the John Togo chapter closed in its records if his death was not properly established. Saturday Vanguard reported on May 26 the big news of exhuming of the decomposing corpse of John Togo by men of the Joint Task Force, JTF at the fringe of a riverine community in Delta state, where the remains were buried as well as the death of the ammunition storekeeper of the group, who was also injured in the same aerial bombardment by the task force on May 12. Togo was allegedly interred in a camouflage military uniform and his corpse was taken away in an ambulance after it was exhumed between 2:00-2:20pm, last Wednesday. The facility will be located at the Nigerian Naval Dockyard, Wilmont Point, Lagos, will see the foreign firm move to site in a few weeks. It is expected to complete the project in 4-6 years time. The ceremony was presided over by the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Ola Sa’ad Ibrahim, who was represented by the Chief of Plans and Policy (COPPS), Navy Headquarters, Rear Admiral James Oladimeji. Chief Executive Officer of the Netherlands-based company, Mr. Amit Sade, said at the ceremony that his company’s resolve to build the facility was a demonstration of its faith in the Nigerian economy. “Our resolve stems from our faith in Nigeria’s economy where we have operated this past ten years. The project will be a wonderful opportunity to exchange knowledge and also create jobs for Nigerians,” Amit said. Admiral Ibrahim noted that the facility will enable the Nigerian Navy build its own vessels that will be of economic benefit to the nation. Also, other countries will use the facility thereby bringing in the needed foreign exchange to run the economy.” The Naval Chief said that Nigerians would be most enthusiastic about the project which Admiral Oladimeji said will be of more benefit to future generations of Nigerians. Rdokoye June 10th, 2011, 11:28 AM IMOKE ADVOCATES ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR NAVY Wednesday, June 08, 2011 Governor of Cross River State, Mr Liyel Imoke Tuesday called on the Federal Government to make available additional resources to the Nigerian Navy to enable it procure additional boats to secure the nation’s territorial waters. Gov Imoke said while receiving the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Usman O. Jibrin in Calabar that there has been a rise in the rate of piracy and militancy within the water boundary between Nigerian and Cameroon as a result of the ceding of Bakassi. He therefore recommended a joint military patrol to ensure the safety of lives and property as well as the image of the country. Gov Imoke described Calabar, which is the Headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command and equally harvours the headquarters of NNS Victory, as an integral part of the Navy. He explained that Cross Riverians have benefited tremendously from the navy with the location of both its hospital and its numerous schools within the State. The Governor noted that the State has enjoyed relative peace and serenity within the Niger Delta because of the presence of the Nigerian Navy as it has made effort to combat crime while commending the navy for showing high sense of commitment within the State and sustaining the cordial relationship and cooperation between the navy and civilians. He lauded the Navy for sinking a borehole in Akpabuyo Local Government Area as part of activities marking its 55th anniversary celebration, adding that its assistance to the state should be cherish for a long time. Rear Admiral Jibrin, eho assumed duties as the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command since November 2010 thanked the State Government for its support to the Command headquarters as well as NNS Victory Calabar especially in the donation of a boat to the Navy to ensure effective patrol of the nation’s territorial waters. He solicited for more support in this direction. Jibrin disclosed that the boats will enhance the combat to check the excesses of pirates and militants within the buffer zone between Nigeria and Cameroon especially now that the incidence of such activities in that area is alarming and thanked the governor for appealing to the Presidency to ensure that a joint patrol between the navy and police within the area is enforced to check piracy and militancy. The FOC also disclosed that the Navy enjoys tremendous support from the State mostly in the monthly allocation of petroleum products to facilitate its operations which has enhanced its activities with the nation’s territorial waters. He said as part of the Naval activity to mark its 55th anniversary celebration, they sank a borehole in Akpabuyo Local Government Area which the benefiting community expressed satisfaction. Bradley (FFG 49) concluded exercise Obangame Express off the coast of Cameroon as part of Africa Partnership Station (APS) West, March 23, 2011. Robert G. Bradleym, along with ships from Belgium, Cameroon, France, Gabon, Nigeria, and Spain, participated in the exercise which focused on maritime domain awareness with the specific challenges faced by the interoperability of a multinational force to improve its proficiency at sea. "The professionalism of the Cameroonian Rapid Intervention Battalion and Nigerian boarding teams were impressive," said Commander Darryl Brown, commanding officer of USS Robert G. Bradley. "Obangame Express gave the Cameroonian and Nigerian naval forces a chance to work together. Both sides agreed that this was the first of hopefully many opportunities and they look forward to next year's exercise." This exercise is designed to support the strengthening of efforts against countering illicit activities in the regions maritime zone. The pre-sail conference and post-exercise debrief was held at the Cameroon Navy Base in Douala, Cameroon, allowing the navies to express mission successes and also offer suggestions for improvements. This multinational cooperation ensures continued success for interoperability and proficiency of the regional maritime stake holders in the Gulf of Guinea. "This exercise proved to be a great interaction between multiple naval partners," said Lieutenant junior grade James Carles. "Both the Cameroonian and Nigerian boarding team were very engaged in the event. The Nigerians' procedures throughout the compliant boarding evolution were so effective that our team picked up a couple of tactics that we will add to our boarding operations  . However, the Cameroonian special ops team does not usually get the opportunity to conduct a compliant boarding, so this provided a chance to conduct this type of boarding, which will help them expand their maritime capabilities." Robert G. Bradley, an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate, is homeported out of Mayport, Florida, and is on a scheduled deployment to the U.S. Naval Forces Africa area of responsibility. APS is an international security cooperation initiative, facilitated by Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, aimed at strengthening global maritime partnerships through training and collaborative activities in order to improve maritime safety and security in Africa. BEEG EAGLE June 15th, 2011, 05:14 PM COASTAL PATROL CRAFT: WHICH WAY FORWARD??? Let's talk coastal patrol and fast interceptor craft for the NN. Well, picture a patrol combatant the size of a Shaldag Mk.II, which is 25 metres in length. There is a Spanish-built CPC known as the RODMAN 101 which at 30m is larger and is just as fast being able to hit 35 knots/hr. The good thing is that they available at the rate of approximately US$100m FOR FIFTEEN UNITS. It therefore means that for an outlay of US$150M (which is well within the possibilities attainable with the annual budget of the NN), we can entirely plug the holes in our national requirement for CPCs. That comes with the added advantage that with countries such as the USSR and Israel having successfully mounted SSMs on the 25m-long Osa missile boats and 25m-long Shaldag interceptors respectively (even on smaller 20-metre Israeli hydrofoils), the said RODMAN attack craft could, whenever the need arises, form the backbone of a flotilla of ultra-fast missile boats which can deploy swarm-and-ambush tactics to inflict maximum damage on enemy vessels. Iran have shown us the way already by using the Chinese-built HEGU class coastal patrol craft, a 27m vessel armed with both Silkworm and C101 missiles to devastating effect. Some of the solutions to the challenges which abound in our maritime domain are well within our budgetary outlay. We only need to try. When you add 22 units of RODMAN 101s to the mix of about 15 units of new MANTA and SHALDAG already available, that would mean a coastal patrol flotilla of 37 ultra-fast interceptors to patrol the zone of transition between the Niger Delta and the greenwater environment of the Gulf of Guinea. All the OPVs, logistics ships, missile craft, corvettes and frigates can then focus SQUARELY on manning our EEZ from 20 nautical miles out to its 350nm limit while the powerful and growing brownwater fleet of the NA and NN amphibious, regular and special forces can exclusively focus on manning the Niger Delta. The ranking was based on Nigeria’s military expenditure in 2009, which also made her the seventh largest spender on the African continent. The country spent $1.864 billion or N233 billion in 2009, representing 0.90 percent of the Gross Development Product (GDP). Defence is a critical sector and has enjoyed favourable consideration in funding, especially in recent years. For instance, the sector got N264 billion in 2010 and this rose to N348 billion in the current year’s budget. It also enjoyed incentives because most of its goods are imported. These imports are exempt from import duties, Value Added Tax (VAT) etc under the Common External Tariff 2008 to 2012 (CET). Defence funding in Nigeria is superior to many sectors and in most African countries, especially in line with security responsibilities. This is exemplified in the current budget in which the military is the second largest beneficiary, trailing the education sector which got N356 billion. The defence sector is also ahead of other key sectors like works and power, that got N182 billion and N91 billion respectively. Bright Okogu, director-general, in a presentation to the students of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, noted that within ECOWAS, Nigeria’s defence spending is the largest. “It is five times greater than the spending of Cote d’Ivoire and almost 15 times the size of Ghana’s spending,” he said. They've built some smaller boats already; it's discussed somewhere in this thread. Nigeria can seek out collaborations with large shipbuilders (I like the Koreans) to jump-start the building of larger vessels in Nigeria. I'm sure that within the next 10-20 years Nigeria could be building corvettes and frigates (whether or not they will is another question). Speaking at the decoration of serving and retired senior air force officers with the Distinguished Flying Star, today at in Abuja, Mr Jonathan said that the federal government will continue to make substantial investment in equipping the armed forces sufficiently because "no nation can rightly boast of greatness in the absence of a vibrant armed forces". The president said that since the great task of nation building could only be accomplished if the safety and territorial integrity of the country is assured, there could be no doubt that building and maintaining a virile and motivated air force is essential to ensuring Nigeria's security and national development. "It is for this reason that the federal government has continued to make substantial investment in the provision of new platforms and the reactivation of older ones. This is in addition to our commitment to ensure better training and improved welfare packages for the brave men and women of our noble armed forces," he said. Mr Jonathan commended the Nigerian Air Force, and the armed forces as a whole, for their immense contributions to the maintenance of national security and the defence of democracy in Nigeria. "I must also note with pride your contributions towards ensuring stability across our great continent and beyond," he said. He congratulated the five recipients of the Distinguished Flying Star - Air Chief Marshall Paul Dike (rtd.), Air Marshall Isaac Alfa (rtd.), Air Vice Marshall Femi John Femi (rtd.), the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Mohammed Dikko Umar and the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshall Oluseyi Petinrin - noting that the award was in recognition of their contributions to the advancement of the Air Force and the security of Nigeria. The vessel, designed as a “high endurance” cutter with a crossing range of 9,600 miles at 20 knots, was donated to Nigeria by the U.S. on May 13. The ship also has an 80-foot flight deck, capable of handling navy helicopters, and can undertake extended patrol missions. Its capabilities are enhanced by advanced air search and surface search radars, including the AN/SPS-73 digital surface radar system that incorporates a state-of-the-art computerised collision avoidance system. A ceremony for the departure has been scheduled to take place at the Coast Guard Island in Alameda, where it is docked. The ship was donated to the Nigerian Navy in recognition of the good relationship between Nigeria and the U.S. The warship is expected to enhance the seaworthiness of the Nigerian Navy and make it well prepared to effectively police, not only Nigerian territorial waters but the entire West African coast. The warship was commissioned to the U.S. Navy in 1968 but was later de-commissioned on March 29 after it had participated in some UN missions in enforcing maritime treaties. NAN learnt that the ship had not departed for Nigeria because the Nigerian crew was undertaking training on it, while rehabilitation work was being carried out. NAN also learnt that the U.S. Coast Guard ship had been renamed after Nigeria Navy Thunder F90 (NNS Thunder or Aradu). http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2011/11/20/u-s-warship-departs-for-nigeria-on-monday/ Naijaborn November 20th, 2011, 10:15 PM Africa Partnership Station (APS) West http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5309/5612670630_c1f9849ef9_b.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5310/5612670696_de0ceb2ef2_b.jpg http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6153/6178632766_2246207639_b.jpg Naijaborn November 20th, 2011, 10:19 PM ^^ http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6180/6178107669_5aa7a4aa5a_b.jpg http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6139/5929946846_ccae53d162_b.jpg GAR3TH November 21st, 2011, 08:19 PM THE NEW F90 NNS THUNDER Courtesy of David Foote http://i42.tinypic.com/2a0l1lz.jpg GAR3TH November 21st, 2011, 08:21 PM The US coast guard will upload some pics later today so be on the look out. GAR3TH June 5th, 2012, 11:32 AM edit Tbite June 7th, 2012, 04:10 PM Nigeria celebrates first home-made warship By Will Ross Nigeria correspondent http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/60652000/jpg/_60652085_shipwsailors.jpg "Proudly Nigerian" does not just apply to the people of this vast land - the West African giant is now building its own warships. After nearly five years in the making, the Nigerian navy ship or NNS Andoni was launched with a colourful event. At 31m (100ft) long, this is no giant of the seas, but the fact that it was designed and built in Nigeria, by Nigerian engineers, is a great source of pride. "We are all happy and elated," said Commodore SI Alade, one of Nigeria's senior naval officers. "This is the first time this kind of thing is happening in Nigeria and even in the sub region." “With a speed of up to 25 knots (46km/h), this can quickly go to intercept the pirates ” http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/60755000/jpg/_60755693_60719448.jpg Commanding Officer Adepegba Moments after stepping on board NNS Andoni, sailor FL Badmus said: "I feel on top of the world. "I'm proud to have been picked by the naval authorities to serve on this ship. "We hope this is the beginning of very good things to come and we thank God for it." The warship was named after the Andoni people of south-eastern Nigeria - and several chiefs travelled to Lagos to witness the launch - including his Royal Highness NL Ayuwu Iraron Ede-Obolo II, wearing a top hat, a sequin-adorned velvet gown and a brightly coloured necklace. The ceremony also featured multi-faith prayers, with an imam asking God to "protect and preserve this ship from the dangers of the day and the violence of the enemy", and a Christian praying: "May she sail with success like the Ark of Noah." The event had an interesting twist of symbolism for the guest of honour, Nigeria's leader, Goodluck Jonathan. Anti-pirate ship http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/60752000/jpg/_60752510_chief.jpg Named after the Andoni, their chiefs were some of the guests of honour at the ship's launch He is from a family of canoe makers - and that he is now the president launching a warship is a sign of how far he has risen. "This is the beginning of the transformation... and I believe in another 10 to 15 years, we can be thinking about starting a project to take Nigerians into the air," President Jonathan said. The NNS Andoni could be key in the fight against militants operating near Nigeria's oil fields as well as the growing threat of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. Piracy in Nigerian waters is on the increase and incidents are happening over a wider area, according to the International Maritime Bureau. There were 10 piracy attacks off the 780km (485 miles) of Nigeria's coastline during the first quarter this year - the same number reported for the whole of 2011. "While the number of reported incidents in Nigeria is still less than Somalia… the level of violence against crew is dangerously high," according to a recent IMB report. The NNS Andoni is equipped with an advanced radar system and firepower. "With a speed of up to 25 knots (46km/h), this can quickly go to intercept the pirates," said Commanding Officer Adepegba standing on the bridge pointing out the ship's three machine guns and the automatic grenade launcher. Foreign orders The Nigerian navy reportedly wants to acquire 49 more vessels over the next 10 years. But how many will be home built? Orders are already in - for three from a French shipbuilder, and six from Singapore. http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/60724000/jpg/_60724322_thunder.jpg The NNS Thunder was donated by the US - but its monthly fuel bill is huge President Jonathan recently approved the acquisition of two large patrol vessels from China Shipbuilding and Offshore International, a mainly state-owned company. In an effort to boost local industry, one of the Chinese vessels is meant to be 70% built in Nigeria. NNS Andoni was dwarfed when a 105m-long frigate steamed past during the ceremony - with all the officers cheering on deck. NNS Thunder, a veteran of the Vietnam War, arrived at the beginning of the year, a gift from the US. “We came up with the design, the expertise and about 60% of the materials were locally sourced” Engineer Kelechi Eyebrows were raised when it was announced that the monthly fuel bill of the 45-year-old ship would be $1m (£650,000). When this year's navy's $450m budget was discussed at the House of Assembly in January, one senator described the donated ships as hand-outs that could become liabilities rather than assets. There were also calls for corruption to be plugged. "Corruption has sucked the blood out of our system. So we have to depend on hand-outs," one senator lamented. NSS Andoni's fuel bill will certainly be lower than NNS Thunder. 'No indigenous touch' After parading on the deck, the naval officers took photos of each other with mobile phones - clearly delighted with the new ship. "It's a great day. It's taken over five years but it's worth it," said a smiling Kelechi, one of the engineers. "We came up with the design, the expertise and about 60% of the materials were locally sourced. The engines, generators and navigation equipment came from outside." Nigeria is one of Africa's biggest oil producers, but this has not so much helped as hampered the development of local industries because the country has relied so heavily on imported goods. http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/60723000/jpg/_60723214_sailor.jpg Sailors hope NNS Andoni will mark a bright new future for Nigeria's navy As he launched NNS Andoni, President Jonathan lamented the decline of industries that had been strong not long after independence in 1960. "We had Nigerian Airways, the Nigerian shipping line and a number of investments that were doing well. But because there was no indigenous touch, all these died," the president said. "We are told that some countries that were on par with us are now building aircraft, choppers and other things," he said, adding that Nigeria had for a long time not embraced technology. The president suggested sending the brightest students of engineering to the best universities in the world. "Then let them come back and work in Nigeria because we cannot continue to be importing. We have a very large market and even what we consume alone is enough to support an industry." "We have this market, we must use it," President Jonathan said - before laying the keel to mark the start of work on the second "Made in Nigeria" warship. The airport was closed for some time after the incident, but is now back open. http://nigerianaviation.wordpress.com/ Naijaborn August 20th, 2012, 11:38 PM http://beegeagle.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/nigerian-navy-sbs-participate-in-a-joint-sea-exercise-with-american-seamen1.jpg http://beegeagle.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/shaldag.jpg.http://beegeagle.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/manta-asd-littoral-interceptors.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7109/7826616544_347a386f88_c.jpg Naijaborn August 21st, 2012, 12:05 AM http://beegeagle.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/rbs-defender1.jpg http://securityscholar.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/nigerian-navy-counter-piracy-demonstration-warboats-org.jpg?w=584&h=389&h=389 http://beegeagle.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/2n8zgqa.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8294/7826797714_0ef3c91097_c.jpg http://beegeagle.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/dsc0013811.jpg?w=640&h=480 http://beegeagle.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/sea-eagle-opc.jpg http://ootp.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/senegalese-nigerians-special-forces-show-marines-small-boat-amphibious-tactics-during-aps-11_110423-m-ix266-017.png http://beegeagle.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/ocea-p176.jpg?w=640 Their new, Made in Naija a.cars http://beegeagle.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/apcs-for-ogun-police-command-nan.jpg http://crossedcrocodiles.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/seabasegofgboard.jpg http://beegeagle.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/ocea-boat.jpg?w=640 http://beegeagle.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/dsc00030.jpg?w=640&h=480 http://i53.tinypic.com/1aqgm.jpg http://beegeagle.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/vickers-mbtnan.jpg.
