A strong -1 (Minus 1)

Malls / Multiplexes / Movie halls are NOT weekend getaways:-) Lot of people have a notion that CBE doesn't have a good outdoor weekend getaway place which I strongly object to. If we strictly limit this thread to Forest preserves, Parks, Museums, Dams, Waterfalls and Historical sites we don't have to dig thru between Restaurants and Malls to find valuable information.

Just my 2 cents

kongutamizhan
August 6th, 2010, 06:15 PM
Also instead of just posting photos, I would suggest to to append information like "How to get there?", "Facilities available on the outdoor location" etc.,

As I mentioned in the Coimbatore infrastructure thread, I am still in the priliminary stages of putting together a powerpoint presentation to improve Western Ghats, Forest preserves etc., at CBE. Those info will be valuable for me too while coming up with that.

Last weekend i went to munnar with my friends in bike... we took Cbe-Pollachi-Udumalai-Chinnar-Munnar route..

The drive was nice till Tamilnadu checkpost after Udumalai...after that the road got worse...through forest on both sides(could see sign boards as animals crossing zone)... but the scenic was nice... reached Munnar at 170 kms from cbe..

Munnar does not have many tourist spots...but the mountains, forest, tea estates makes it a worth place.. and good place to hangout from cbe... and we were lucky to see wild elephants very close to the road on our return...

and i recommend Munnar for weekend hangouts after ooty and valparai...

Ananth,
you can try a drive in bike/car to Valparai also. From there you can again take Valparai-Sholayar-Athirapalli. Sceneries will be superb also, travel inside the forest will be good. Since it is raining heavily, don't try it now. You can have a try after September.

Any growing city will have resorts or places to unwind in the weekend. Mega cities like Mumbai have its beautiful beach and hill getaways and Chennai has its places on ECR. Bengaluru and Hyderabad has its clubs and resorts scattered all around.

I was thinking on Coimbatore and sat down to identify places. Had some data and upon googling got some beautiful properties for the Coimbatoreans to unwind their weekends. I didn’t go through the cluster of hotels and resorts in popular hill getaways around our city like Ooty, Kodai and Munnar. Instead I have compiled a collection of exotic but less known properties scattered in various hamlets. These include hill getaways, wild havens, plantation hideouts, heritage properties and campsites in Coimbatore and neighboring districts and states.

I have tried to include the phone numbers also. But please search google for latest details or any changes.

Ooty to Masinagudi(via bison valley)-Mudumalai-Gudalur-Pykara-Ooty

From Ooty there are two routes to Mudumalai.

(1) The long route through Gudalur. Great road. National highway. 60 km to Ooty. Most buses and heavy traffic take this route – and hence a very busy road. (2) The short route through Masinagudi – only 28 km – through desnse jungle. The road is pretty steep, and relatively narrow (one and half lane at most places). The hairpin bends are wide, so no issues there. There is almost no traffic in this road. The highlight of this road is the set of 36 hair pin bends in 18 km.The road from Ooty to Masinagudi is very steep. You need to go in second gear to reduce the speed. Many vehicles fails when climbing up from Masinagudi-Ooty.

last weekend i went to Amaravathi Dam near udumalai.... nothing was there in the Amaravathi dam to attract tourist, except the Crocodile park (Mudalai pannai)...

it was good as i can see lot of Crocodiles very close... i think the park area is not enough to that many number of Crocodiles.... and another notable thing here is, entrance ticket for the Crocodile park is just 50 paise per person...

Maintenance is worst in this park. You will not have proper connectivity/No sign boards. Heard that forest dept didnt have proper funds to maintain this crocodile park. I went there during childhood days. you can see crocodiles in different stages in those days. That is missing now. :(

Hi Friends, Today I enquired the KFC(Yum Foods) in Chennai about getting a Franchisee to start an Outlet in Madurai.

They told Yum Foods has stopped giving Franchisees in Tamilnadu. And they are shortly opening 2 new outlets - One in Coimbatore and another one in Madurai. They told both these outlets are opened directly by KFC equity shares...Though they had recieved so many applications for Franchisees at Madurai and Coimbatore, the company is not intersted in giving franchisees now. They may look at it once the business in these cities run successfully.

In Coimbatore, KFC is coming up in a Mall and in Madurai, it's coming up in a seperate building near Big Cinemas Jass-Arsh & APOLLO Orient Hospitals. Works on these projects had been started a year ago but the Outlets will be opened by March of 2011 in both these cities, they said.

cross-posting from Madurai thread...

KFC is coming up in Brookfield Mall (i think so) .... and will be opened by March 2011:banana:

http://expressbuzz.com/states/tamilnadu/tree-top-guest-houses-a-hit-with-kovai-tourists/207193.html

COIMBATORE: All roads now lead to Kovai Courtallam as tourists get a different experience altogether enjoying nature from treetops amidst forest environment. Thanks to forest department’s eco-tourism initiative.
Interestingly, Kovai Courtallam got a facelift at a time when developmental work was going on in full swing for the World Classical Tamil conference. And the forest department as part of a drive to attract tourists launched the ‘Treetop guest houses’.
“This has received immense response from the tourists even from far off places as they are exposed to nature’s bounty in the forest surroundings,” District Forest Officer I Anwaruddin said. The project is aimed at making the people experience the forest environment thereby helping the department in its conservation exercise.
Shedding more light on it, Anwaruddin said this innovative project is being implemented with the active participation of tribal population living in the vicinity. To be precise, the idea behind the eco-tourism project is to reduce tribals dependency on forest wealth.
LCS Srikanth, Range Forest Officer, Social Forestry, who takes care of eco-tourism said that two houses on tree-tops besides two guest houses constructed at ground level is now turning as a tourist attraction as houses are booked well in advance.
He said the 10x10 sq.ft single room atop the tree-top with 6x5 sq.ft cot having an attached toilet is being offered at a charge of `2000 for 24 hours. And the guest houses have been provided with air-condition facility.
Canteens are run by tribals near the tree-top houses for the convenience of the tourists.
The guest houses are let on rent only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Anwaruddin said the entire proceeds from ‘Tree-top houses’ goes to the kitty of tribal welfare fund.
Tourists can book ‘Treetop houses’ over phone at 0422-2456911.

Is Karunanidhi reading skyscraper city? A good news, a mean amount but might be a good start

http://www.hindu.com/2010/09/30/stories/2010093060240700.htm

Tirupur: In an attempt to attract more holidaymakers to Tirupur district, the Department of Tourism has come out a tourism promotion action plan at an estimated outlay of Rs. 81 lakh under the Western Ghat Development Programme (WGDP).

Under this, four recreational parks and landscape improvement were planned at Amaravathi area and Thirmoorthy foothills.

Official sources told The Hindu that the detailed blueprint of the project had already been submitted to the State Government and the works on the projects would commence shortly after the necessary approvals were received.

The Public Works Department would be entrusted with the construction of the parks.

Of the four parks planned, three would be set up at Thirumoorthy region at Rs. 45 lakh with one to come up near Dhali channel, another near the surplus course and the other one along the downstream of Thirumoorthy dam.

These parks would be having play materials for children, walking tracks and seating arrangements for the tourists to relax.

Infrastructure

The park conceptualised at Amaravathy would be constructed at Rs. 26 lakh with the project cost to be spent on creation of infrastructure like ball fountains, statues of wild animals like tiger and lion, signage boards, landscaping and for making water supply arrangements.

These projects would serve as an added attraction to the tourists who otherwise had to come and return visiting the Thirumoorthy and Amaravathi dams without having much space to relax with their children.

Another project planned is the one conceptualised by the Forest department to improve the crocodile park situated near Amaravathi for attracting more sightseers to the area.

The requisite funds for this scheme would be obtained from the corpus created under the Natural Resources Management Programme, tourism department sources added.

The park, at present, houses 97 crocodiles.

I visited this crocodile park during my school days. It was so gud during that time. It had crocodiles of almost all ages. Now it is in worst condition(visited again before 4-5 months). They should improve this at any cost. Also the ticket price can be increased. Still they are collecting ticket price Less that a rupee. :)

The approach road to this croco park should be gud. They can put this in the tourism map also. A separate package can be created with these places including places around pollachi.

Beautiful pictures and many spots around Coimbatore for a week-end get away.

Can we expand the scope of this thread to include the entire state and may be even adjoining states since world has become smaller and people even fly out of the country for a week-end trip?

Growing preference among tourists for cottages

http://www.hindu.com/pp/2010/10/16/images/2010101650300101.jpg

Having for long been ideal getaway places for the rich and famous Ooty and other hill stations such as Kotagiri and Coonoor in the Nilgiris district have over the years evolved into vacation destinations suitable for different categories of tourists.

In tune with the changing trend, preferences in accommodation have also changed. While until recently only hotels belonging to various categories catered to the requirements of different classes of tourists, of late there is a marked preference for independent cottages.

Unlike earlier when only those staying for weeks together preferred cottages, now even those spending a night or a weekend choose to look for suitable cottages. As a result, there is a growing tendency among people constructing houses to design their property in such a manner that it would suit the taste of different types of tourists.

While official sources say that the number of such cottages in various parts of the district is around 350, the owners point out that they serve a dual purpose. In addition to being a house of their own it augments their income particularly during the Summer when the demand for accommodation shoots up.

Those preferring such accommodation say that they ensure a great deal of privacy and also enable them to have the food of their choice. Many of the cottages are located in scenic spots.

However, a grievance of those in the organised hospitality sector is that the cottages are being rented out without proper authorisation. They don't pay taxes like the regular hotels and lodges. From the police point of view it is said that it is very difficult to keep track of the people who use such cottages because registers are not maintained.

http://www.fashionunited.in/news/apparel/max-now-in-coimbatore-071220101433

Value fashion brand Max is no stranger to consumers in Coimbatore as a large number of expatriates from this commercial hub live and work in the Gulf states where Max is indeed a popular brand. Present in 11 countries in the Middle East including United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey, Max is already present in nine cities in India.

Max recently extended its footprint in Tamil Nadu with the opening of its outlet at the Brookfield Plaza in Coimbatore. It’s fourth in the southern state with three other outlets being in Chennai. Max is definitely on a growth surge in India, with its existing 35 outlets and another 15 in the making by the end of the financial year, bringing the total to a robust 50.

According to executive director, Vasanth Kumar they intend to have a pan-India presence in three years and take the store network to 100. The Coimbatore outlet is spread across 17,500 sq. ft. offering apparel for women, men and children besides footwear and fashion accessories. Further, he added that Max was soon opening its fourth outlet in Chennai and its first in the temple city of Madurai. He also described the company’s sourcing strategy as it sources merchandise from over 200 suppliers based across 10 cities in India, with 15 from Tirupur, adjacent to Coimbatore.

Talking about the turnover, according to Kumar, the total global retail business sales stood at Rs 22,000 crores.

I visited the Coimbatore central library last week. It is in a pathetic condition. The reading area for children is abused by everyone. Old and broken chairs are staked in a corner. It is not at all conducive for a learning area. There is dust everywhere. The books are torn and not well kept. The government has budgeted a lot of money for libraries. I wonder who is wasting them. The only good thing about the library is the Tamil books section. It is huge, well maintained with lots of books.

Do not know where else to post this -

The parking cost for corporation parking lot in Cross Cut road is 10 Rs. The attendant is charging 20 and people are blindly paying it. A board has been displayed prominently at the entrance with the correct prices. Hope everyone who visits this thread will be aware of it.
The railway parking cost is 15 Rs. A place to consolidate all parking rates across the city would be useful. Any suggestions?

Outskirts looks stunning, but there should be some posts on City hangouts as well. Like commercial streets, Eateries, Music World, Shopping, Malls, Bowling alleys, Good Bars, Clubs etc.

For example: there is one good Chatt place behind Ganga-yamuna theater where we get chilly mushroom..! and one street side famous idly-dosa place around Archana-Darshna theater. a Nice bar in CAG pride. I think RSPuram should have some sort of clubs..?

I think cbe is getting its entertainment avenues in the city steadily, with Brooke fields plaza, one place called psycadel in RS prm, one place in peelamedu whr you find all games like paint ball, fuss ball, n all the high funda games.
Coffee bars are not an issue in the city with 7-CCD's , one food mall in RS prm.

UDHAGAMANDALAM: Mukurthi National Park in the Nilgiris will soon be declared a UNESCO heritage site.

"We are expecting the declaration from UNESCO any time, saying that Mukurthi National Park is a heritage site," said state forest minister N Selvaraj said on the sidelines of a function in Ooty.

Situated about 40km from Ooty, Muk-urthi National Park, located in the south-eastern corner of the Nilgiris plateau, is part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the country's first international biosphere reserve (IBR). The park has grasslands and shrublands interspersed with tropical evergreen shola forests, about 1500m above sea level. The Nilgiri Peak and Kollaribetta are the major peaks, and it also has the Mukurthi lake.

"Three months ago, representatives from UNESCO inspected the park. We are expecting the heritage status any time," said A Ameer Haja, deputy director, Mudumalai tiger reserve and Mukurthi national park. "The unique terrain and eco-system, the endemic species of flora and fauna, many of which are endangered, makes the park eligible for heritage status," he said.

Apart from Eravikulam national park in Kerala, a large population of the Nilgiri tahr (Hemitragus hylocrius) is in the park. According to a 2007 census, there are 2,000 tahr in the country. Last year, the forest department counted 353 tahr in the Mukurthi national park, spread over 78.46 sqkm. In the 2009 census, the number of the mountain goats was about 270.The park is also home to tigers and elephants.

Previously known as the Nilgiri tahr national park, it was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1986 and a national park in 2001 to protect the tahr, which is also known locally as the Nilgiri ibex.

"A number of anti-poaching measures are in place to protect the endangered wild animals," Haja said.

COIMBATORE: Rolling green carpet beneath misty mountains, balmy air blended with scent of tea leaves and cardamom, gurgling lakes, massive reservoirs and a tantalising chance of spotting a big cat lurking in the bushes. Tranquil Valparai plateau, hailed as Tamil Nadu's Cherrapunji, beckons tourists again this summer.

The Coimbatore district administration is planning to hold a summer festival in the tea plantation town by May end or the first week of June to attract tourists from across Tamil Nadu and other parts of the country. "We cannot conduct the festival in the first two weeks of May because of the model code of conduct. After the election results are announced, we will consider holding the summer festival in Valparai by May end or first week of June," the Coimbatore district Collector P Umanath told TOI.

A three-day summer festival was first held in Valparai in 2008 with a flower show, vegetable exhibition and a tableau of the forest department. But for the last two years because of the labour unrest over wages, the mela was called off. However, this year, the traders have urged the district administration to hold the festival and promote tourism in Valparai.

Perched amid the rolling Anamalai hills, Valparai is a tea plantation retreat, with 25,300 acres of private tea estates dotted with 4,500 acres of coffee plantations and 3,000 acres of cardamom estates.

The Valparai town is already besieged by tourists from various parts of Tamil Nadu and other southern states especially neighbouring Kerala. Almost all the cottages of the private tea estates and a few hotels in the town are full.

With soft drizzles in the evenings and a pleasant cool clime during the daytime, picturesque Valparai is turning out to be an ideal retreat to beat the summer heat. However, lack of infrastructure and hotel facilities are sore points. As corporate tea estates from Tatas to Parrys Agro occupy most part of Valparai, there is not much private land for developing hotels, say district officials. Also, as Valparai is part of the Anamalai tiger reserve, tourism has to be regulated, say environmentalists.

The Maharaja Theme Parks and Resorts Limited, which will be inaugurated on February 26, is to provide to some extent the much-needed entertainment facilities to Coimbatore and its neighbours.

Though Coimbatore has a number of theatres and a couple of theme parks, not much has developed on the entertainment front for quite some time now.

It is nearly two decades since the city got a new cinema theatre, say sources.

The industrial boom has resulted in more employment.

And, this translates to more people coming here for jobs. They need more avenues to spend their leisure time with family and friends and the city thus has a huge gap to be filled in its quality entertainment needs.

Maharaja Group's theme park at Neelambur is one effort towards this Called the Maharaja World, the facility will have an amusement park, a food court and theatres.

Its Managing Director, P. Sathiyamoorthy, says that the amusement park would have adventure games (12 rides), water games (14), a kids area with 15 games and a lot of smaller games too.

The artificial hillock and interactive water games are some new concepts. Many games have been imported from China and Malaysia. The food court has seven counters with a variety of vegetarian, non-vegetarian, Western and confectionary items to choose from. The two theatres have a seating capacity of 120 each.

The focus is on safety and hygiene, says Mr. Sathiyamoorthy. The park can accommodate even 2,000 people at a time.

"We have taken care to come up to international standards in every aspect from sewage treatment plant to drinking water. The aim is to get people coming to the park repeatedly," he said.
Quality entertainment is what Coimbatoreans need and hence focus has been on ensuring that they get it. This includes a dormitory to accommodate 100 people, a dispensary within the premises for emergency, safety gadgets for all rides, shuttle service from the main road, and even a proposal to tie up with a local hospital. The park also has banquet hall, seminar halls and other facilities for corporate customers. A mini golf course is an additional attraction. The works were started three years ago and the park, at a total investment of Rs. 25 crores, is ready for inauguration now.

Its architect, G. Janardanan, says the theme for the park was fun. "The visit should be a memorable experience for the customers," he said. Hence, every building has a different colour. The layout is compact and it is designed in such a way that a visitor will cover all the rides.

In most of the amusement parks, maintenance of cleanliness and hygiene is a challenge due to the large number of visitors. Hence, sensors are placed in washing areas and toilets. In a move to avoid dust, the entire area (where there are no games) is covered by landscaping or tiles.

"It is a compact park," Mr. Sathiyamoorthy says.

Thus, as the city grows it hopes to see many more entertainment facilities on par with international standards.

Farewell to old cinema halls

COIMBATORE: Matinee idol MGR celebrated the-250 day historic run of his Nadodi Mannan' at this old building. Tamil cinema's evergreen pair, Kamal Haasan and Sridevi, visited this now run-down building to see their fans go berserk over 16 Vayadhinele'.

Even chief minister M Karunanidhi came here to promote his Vandikara Magan,' in 1978. But, the glory days are over. The 72-year-old Raja theatre was closed in January and partially razed. It is now being used as a godown and parking bay for a major textile outlet on the nearby Oppanakara street.

In the last 10 years, curtains have come down on at least 10 theatres. Only 23 theatres are functioning now. Of the 400 theatres spread across Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur, 200 have been closed down over the last decade.

"We closed down and demolished the building as the property had been partitioned,"says R Vinod, co-owner of Raja Theatre. "Neither the locals nor my family can forget Raja theatre and the golden run we had, especially with MGR. Nadodi Mannan' ran for 250 days and MGR himself had come down to Coimbatore for the 250th-day celebrations. Some of my greatest memories have been created in this theatre," Vinod says.

The real estate boom in Coimbatore, poor maintenance and failure to modernise are some of the reasons for the plight of closure of many old cinema halls. Many of the old movie houses were family owned and feuds hindered success and survival. "Most of these were owned by joint families. Family disputes and conflicting business interests within the family also resulted in their closure," says a theatre employee working at a major single screen movie hall in the city.

Next to Raja theatre is south India's oldest cinema hall, Variety Hall later renamed Delite. The theatre is empty, struggling to survive by screening black-and-white Tamil hits. Old timers still remember the long queues and mad rush at the theatre, for a ticket to watch one of the biggest Bollywood hits, Sholay'. "The collections are abysmal, but the theatre is still running just to safeguard the property and also to maintain the livelihood of old staff members employed here," says Venkata Subramaniam, a staff at Delite theatre.

According to local historian CR Elangovan, Variety Hall played a vital role in the history of south Indian cinema, as Paul Vincent, son of Swami Kannu Vincent, a maverick entrepreneur, installed two German diesel generators at the theatre. Later, these generators were utilised to meet the power needs of Coimbatore city.

A few months ago, the majestic Hrudaya theatre on Vincent Road was shut down and the Velan theatre in Ganapathy too was closed in 2009. The Geethalaya theatre near the crowded Gandhipuram bus terminal is now being transformed into a shopping complex. Another popular theatre near Jail Road, Arul cinema, has also shut down. Kennedy theatre in RS Puram has been converted into a parking lot, while Rainbow theatre has become Rainbow Manor apartments on Tiruchi Road.

The stately Veera towers is now perched on the land which a long time ago housed the once-crowded Sreenivas theatre. Sri Lakshmi theatre has been converted into a showroom for Maruti cars. And two popular department stores have replaced Sivasakthi theatre in Saibaba Colony and Sripathy theatre on Tiruchi Road.

"Though Coimbatore has become synonymous with industrialisation the city has always maintained a rich and vibrant cinema culture, mainly due to these old single screen cinema halls which were grand and opulent in every way at one point in time," says Rajesh Govindarajalu, a film historian.

Another old theatre in the city, Royal cinema, started in 1946, has weathered the vagaries of time. Royal theatre's owner, G Ratinavel, says nostalgically, "The first generation theatre owners were cinema enthusiasts first and then businessmen. But these second generation owners don't seem to have any sentimental value, so they don't think twice about shutting down their movie halls if there is a lucrative option."

It has the just-out-of-the-oven feel. A lovely warm shade of brown with a perfect crust, you can make a meal of it with or without the ice cream.

Why have you started with dessert, you may ask. Quite simply because it is the sweet department that you first meet as you enter the wonderfully-named ‘Latest Recipe' restaurant. A splendid canopy draws your eyes. Under an elaborate chandelier, there is a circular counter that you circumvent before you get to the other food. If you are harbouring foolish thoughts of skipping dessert, you are in trouble. It is seduction on a grand scale. Panna cotta, gateaux, mousse, soufflι, ice cream, tarts and the aforementioned banana walnut affair will do you in.

Latest Recipe is sprawling. The long counters laden with food add to the expansiveness. Oriental, Italian, Continental, South Indian and North Indian — it is unlikely that you will go hungry here.

Cheery

Gaily coloured casseroles in yellows, reds, blues and greens tempt you to lift their lids and peek inside. Friendly chefs urge you try this or that.

Everything is cooked fresh. So, from rotis and pasta to meats, vegetables and dosas, the food comes straight from the sizzling griddles to your plate, piping hot. Sanjay Gupta, general manager, Le Meridien, says that there will soon be a live counter where diners can pick and choose the cut of their choice and have it grilled right before their eyes.

Platter flatter At Latest Recipe in Le Meridien

While you wait for your pizza to be baked or your pasta to be cooked or your meat to be grilled, try the chats. Or, have fruit and cheese (there is some really ripe cheese out there). Cold meats, salads and plenty of bread and rolls baked in-house keep you occupied as you wait for your main course.

Latest Recipe will soon be a 24-hour restaurant. For now, it is open only for a dinner buffet.

“We want to get everything streamlined and perfect before we open 24 hours,” says Sanjay Gupta.

The restaurant boasts a wine list that includes wines from France, Italy, Chile, Australia and California. “We are also promoting Indian wines that have come of age,” says Sanjay.

You are free to mix, match and create your own combo of flavours at this restaurant. Nicest of all, you could eat in any order you want. Your desserts could be your starters and you could end your meal with the hors d'oeuvre and no eyebrows will be raised. That is Latest Recipe for you.

Scenes from Coimbatore

Maruthamalai Films brings “Siruvani” back into the city in the form of a film

At a recent gathering film enthusiasts recalled A. P. Nagarajan's “Makkalai Petra Magarasi” (starring Sivaji Ganesan and P. Banumathi) and Sathyaraj, Prabhu and Nadia starrer “China Thambi Periya Thambi” — films that highlighted the beauty of the Kongu region and its language. While the cultures of Thanjavur and Madurai are often portrayed in films and their dialects too, why has Coimbatore, a city with an illustrious history of cinema, been ignored? They asked.

But, not anymore. “Siruvani”, a film produced by Ragunath, on Coimbatore seeks to redress that grievance. “It's time to bring back the magic of movies to Coimbatore,” he says. His production company Maruthamalai Films is set to make “Siruvani”, that revolves around Coimbatore. He recalls the late 1930s when film production flourished around Central Studios and Pakshiraja Studios set up by Sriramulu Naidu. “Personalities such as MGR, Kalaignar Karunanidhi and N.T. Rama Rao have all gone from here,” he reminds you. All three of them were part of Sriramulu Naidu's “Azaad” which was shot in six languages, including Sinhalese. All of them became blockbusters.

The Hindi version starred Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari. They stayed at Pakshiraja Studios which is now Vignesh Mahal. “Some portions of ‘Siruvani' will be shot at Vignesh Mahal in memory of the famed studio,” he says. An all-new team of directors and actors feature in the love story that is slated for a release by the end of the year.

Hoary past

Many directors, actors, and technicians from this region such as Jaishankar, R. Sundarrajan, Manivannan, Sivakumar, Bhagyaraj, P.V.Chinnapppa and Krishnan Panju have contributed to the growth of cinema. Coimbatore itself has had a big role to play in the cinema movement. But, is the city still conducive for movie makers? Is it lagging behind in resources for film-making?

“No,” says Ragunath. “We want to break the myth with ‘Siruvani' and set a trend.” Coimbatore is full of water bodies and streams and scenic locations near Anaikatty, Kovai Courtallam and Sriuvani. These provide a perfect backdrop for films. The film will be shot at various other locations in the city as well including Gandhipuram, Cross cut Road, Oppanakkara Street, Selvapuram, D.B. Road, Ramanthapuram and Singanallur. The landmark locations of the city will be highlighted too. A major part of the story will be shot at Siruvani. Ragunath is quick to clarify, “We won't pollute the water bodies or disturb the animals by erecting sets. We want to shoot in the natural surroundings adjacent to the Siruvani area.”

It's a sweet love story and that's one of the reasons he has called it Siruvani. “Sweetness of Siruvani water is world famous,” he explains with a smile. Music director Deva has composed four songs for the movie. The number Aaenada aenada is sung by Vijay Yesudas and Chinmayi. There is also a peppy number about prime locations of the city, whose lyrics include names of places in Coimbatore. “Siruvani” showcases the rich culture of Coimbatore, the innocence of the people and the courtesy and respect that is a trademark of the Kongu land. When ‘Azaad' was made, the studios buzzed with action. “Sound recording, editing, and dubbing happened at the full-fledged studios. We want to bring back those times when actors stayed here and worked in films.”

Says Ragunath, “We want to bring the magic back.”

Mudra Max gets a thumbs-up for 7UP Lemon Pattalam campaign
http://www.bestmediainfo.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/7up-lemon-chennai.jpg
With the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League reaching a crescendo, the cricket-loving youth of Tamil Nadu had another reason to cheer, not for Chennai Super Kings but for their local 7UP Lemon Pattalam team that played against CSK on their own turf. 16th May 2011 was a big day for 7UP as they saw the seven-member 7UP Lemon Pattalam team from Coimbatore after a rigorous and highly-competitive league stage winning against mighty Chennai Super kings.:banana::banana:

The two month long tournament had participation of numerous teams across Tamil Nadu and was activated in nine cities – Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Salem, Tirupur, Tirunelvelli, Pondichary, and Vellore. The participation criteria for 7UP Lemon Pattalam required the teams to collect 7 PET labels/RGB Crowns of 7UP and register themselves in a team of 7 players at selected venues in the cities where the tournament was activated. The 10 city champions then competed for the coveted title of “7UP Lemon Pattalam” so as to bag the opportunity to play against their heroes – Chennai Super Kings. The third season of 7UP Lemon Pattalam witnessed about 1450 teams from nine cities of Tamil Nadu.

Mudra Max gave 7UP Lemon Pattalam an innovative start with a larger than life size Sand-art of the 7UP Style Cricket Stadium made by Sudarshan Patnaik at Marina Beach, Chennai. This was followed by an interactive Press conference at Taj Connemara, Chennai on 17 March 2011 for the launch of the Special Edition 7UP Slim Can. To mark the occasion three CSK Players namely Sudeep Tyagi, S Badrinath and M Vijay made an appearance and posed with the new 7UP Champions Can – a limited edition can.

This event was supported by 360-degree initiatives utilizing electronic media, outdoor, radio, floats, point of sale merchandise, and youth hangout initiatives. The campaign received an overwhelming response executed through mall activation at Chennai, Canter Activity and Residential Welfare Association in various cities. The consumer engagement capsule across the nine cities included interesting consumer engagement games/interactive sessions along with the registrations greeted by exciting gift hampers with the 7UP Lemon Patallam branding like LED Shades, Caps, Clappers and Radio-cum-Chiller Boxes as gratification for the participants. The highlight for the activation was the special Activity Zones at Malls/RWA that included WII 7UP Cricket games, special electronic walkthrough arch/gates in 7UP bottle shapes for Public Poll.

Special diet for zoo inmates to beat the heat
http://www.hindu.com/2011/05/19/images/2011051950310201.jpg

Cool effect:Even as the little one keenly watches, a monkey tastes ice candy at the Corporation Zoo in VOC Park in Coimbatore on Wednesday. —

COIMBATORE: The inmates of the Coimbatore Corporation Zoo at VOC Park on Wednesday had a special diet to help them beat the summer heat. The diet included spinach, greens, ice cream, citrus fruits and water melons.

Talking to The Hindu, Zoo Director R. Perumalsamy said that in addition to the normal diet, the special items were fed to the animals in order to maintain their biological thermo regulatory mechanism and to ensure early and easy digestion for the species.

As part of the initiatives to help the animals brave the soaring mercury levels, using long hose pipes the zoo workers splashed cold water into the enclosures and fed them with various greens besides water melons and ice creams. The feeding also included fruits with high water content, including pineapple and grapes, for increasing vitamin C and iron content in the food.

The objective of the exercise was to ensure normal Basal Metabolic Rate and to prevent them from altering. This would result in digestion problems and changes in behavioural pattern among the animals.

There had not been a single case of death due to heat strokes and breeding patterns had not been affected because of such efforts, Mr. Perumalsamy said.

The zoo, at present, has 93 animals belonging to the nine species of mammals such as spotted deer, sambar deer, bonnet macaque, rhesus macaque, civet cat, jackal and camel besides 338 birds belonging to 26 species of birds and 27 reptiles belonging to seven species.

Minerals

The diet plan was aimed at increasing the carbohydrate, minerals and vitamins and bring down the fat content so as to ensure easy digestion and higher water content to prevent dehydration.

Mr. Perumalsamy said that there was no additional expenditure involved and the fruits would cost only around Rs. 150 to Rs. 250 and the greens do not cost much. Even the special diet is only for a specific period of Agni Nakshatiram.

Pantaloon Retail plans to double the total number of stores it has across the country in three years.

Its Chief Operating Officer Pankaj Tibrewal told presspersons here on Friday, after opening a 43,911 sq.ft. Pantaloon store at Brookefields Plaza here, that currently the company had 57 Pantaloon outlets across the country. This would be increased to 60 by the end of June this year.

Nitesh Gawri, Business Manager – South of Pantaloon Retail, said the store opened here on Friday was the 12th in the South and this was the biggest store for Pantaloon in this zone.

Mr. Tibrewal said South was an important market for the company and it planned to expand more in the Southern States. Currently, 20 per cent of the sales came from the Southern markets.

Now, the company was registering an overall 35 per cent growth. Pantaloon stores would be opened in Kochi, Mysore, and Vishakhapatnam soon. It was also looking at places such as Madurai, Salem and Vijayawada.

The company had about 2,000 vendors and the South was one of the important bases for the company for vendors too.

The prices of its ready made garments would be increased by 15 to 18 per cent from August because of the excise duty and increase in input costs.

However, this was not likely to affect sales.

^^ 100+ feet for 10 months.. Thats great... One more record broken. Earlier it had 100Ft water for more than 200+ days. It will create more record, because we will get the monsoon starting in POY areassoon.. One prob with azhiyar is, We TN people cant use the full capacity of azhiyar for irrigation purpose.. We got 2 irrigation canals Pollachi and Vettaikaranpudhur canal which starts from Azhiyar dam. TN can use this dam for drinking water purpose to the extent.

Just above this dam, we have contour canal which takes water to Thirumoorthi dam from Parambikulam. Contour canal idea was actually proposed by Kamaraj.

Azhiyar dam plays an important role in fulfilling the drinking water needs of CBE dist. Mainly for Pollachi town and it covers almost all the village panchayats in Pollachi taluk. It also provides drinking water for Kuniamuthur and Kurichi municipal areas(Sub Urbs of CBE city).

Loams view present in Pollachi-Valparai road is the best place to get the complete view of Azhiyar dam.
