View Full Version : How can I post photos?

I'd love to start a photo thread, but I don't know how to attach photos.
The FAQ at the top of Skyscrapercity says I should use the 'manage attachments' button when posting photos: but I can't find this button anywhere.
A poster kindly gave me some advice which involves downloading the photos to some other site, wrapping them up in something, and God knows what else. I'm not very computer literate (preferring to read real books, and listen to the wireless, whenever possible), so I immediately felt discouraged.
Is there a simple way? And where is that 'manage attachments' button?
Thanks.

Are they your photos you have on your computer? If they are you have to upload them to a file sharing site. Photobucket and Imageshack are 2 free ones that are basic. Flickr is also free but it's more suited to high quality photos.

If you upload a photo to one of these sites it will give you a code. Ideally you want a IMG code, with them you can just paste it into this forum and the photo will apear. It might give you a HTML code though, they look like this:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4122/4849532594_1f3f4817d9_z.jpg

To get that to work properly you need to press a button in the reply box. It's the yellow one to the right of world. Paste the HTML code into the box and press OK. And when you post the message the image will appear in the thread. I did this to get the picture below.

Thanks citybus. This will take at least 2 weeks of experimenting with your instructions - and probably failing miserably. But I will try! It's just the language in your instructions really frightens me!
You will know if I manage to post anything!

PS, citybus. The photos I would like to post are in flickr, but they are not mine. Obviously, I would post a link to the photos to ensure copyright and not make out the photos are mine. My limited expertise, at least extends that far!

From flickr, you need to obtain the static ip address of the photo. When you rightclick on the photo, you get the list of options- there's always "copy image", but what you need is "copy image location". I don't know about other internet browsers, but that appears on the firefox rightclick menu anyway.

From flickr, if you simply copy the address at the top of the screen, when you paste it here, you get nothing.

However, if you select "copy image location", the address looks like the one citybus posted.

Once you have it, simply paste it between "", for example:

However, you don't put <> around the address - i put that in the example above so that the quote would be shown. Once you remove that, you get this:

Thanks Hypnotoad24.
Oh dear, I'm sure I followed citybus's instructions but all I get are little red boxes!
This is just hopeless!

lol. it is a tricky thing to explain- i'd never heard of static addresses until trying to post a photo here. what browser are you using?

I'm using Internet Explorer.
At least that's what I think it's called!

excellent. what you need to do then is, right click on the image, and choose "properties" from the menu. a pop up box will appear. copy the address you see beside Address (URL). Then, paste that between . Hopefully that should do it!

Really, I feel doing a PhD in Sanskrit would be far easier than posting a photo on skyscrapercity!

I would suggest http://imageshack.us

Once you upload an image it will give you a nice array of options and advice on linking to the image.

I dunno if you're trying to post your own photos or what but what i do is goodle the building i'm talking about then click on FULL SIZE IMAGE, then you copy the URL which is the address at the top of the page.
Come back to skyscrapercity and in the box for writing your comment there's a yellow icon. It's got a picture of a mountain in it and it's between the world icon and the speech bubble icon.
A box will appear, if there's anything written in it, delete it, and then paste the URL that you've copied already.
cick ok.. then post that bad boy

That i think should be idiot proof.
try it again

Hotlinking is generally frowned upon - especially when posting images to a board as popular as skyscrapercity.com. Are there any rules here about hotlinking? Many websites will actually have measures to prevent it.

I've made some imageshack instructions, which you can find here: http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/4576/filek.jpg

This is for uploading images already stored on your computer. If you want to use images you find on the internet you will need to save them somewhere on your computer first.

The two images below are the result of pasting the "Forum Code" and "Forum Thumbnail" into the reply box respectively.

The forum thumbnail is automatically resized (click to see full sized image).

Hey Alkareem, here's some more advice if it helps...
Upload the pic you want onto tinypic.com. After you've uploaded the picture you'll see a tag, which says direct link for websites; copy and paste this info.

Then, come to this site and click on the little icon, above post reply, with the little mountain on it and then paste the info.

Voila, you should have your photo uploaded...

Thanks Nordisk, I'll try that over the weekend.
I'm giving it a rest for the moment as I got a headache trying to understand and follow all the advice!

I'm not sure how to take pictures off flickr using Internet Explorer, it's easily done with Mozilla Firefox. I know it seems daunting downloading more software even if it is free but it might speed up your internet like it did for my computer. I'll tell you how it's done on Firefox anyway.

http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr65/citybusrenegade/abc1.jpg

This works with any photo on the internet. Get the one you want and right click your mouse just outside the picture on a blank part of the screen. At the bottom of the box there is the 'View Page Info' option. Click on it. A new box will appear that looks like this:

http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr65/citybusrenegade/abc2.jpg

On the top you will see a button called media, click on it. IN the box below there will be several sentences. Click on one of them and you will see an image appear below. You have to click on these sentences until the photo you want will appear below. In Flickr the one you want is usually 1/3 or half the way down. Once you find the one you want you can highlight the code and copy it, like it is in the picture above. This is the internet location of that image. To display that image in Skyscrapercity you have to post a message, and in that message click on the yellow image button that is to the right of the globe. Paste the code that you highlighted earlier into it and choose OK.

http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr65/citybusrenegade/abc3.jpg

When you post the message the picture will be in your message, like so:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4003/4635155847_82a3188b49_z.jpg

When posting photos it's good to say where the images come from. For example: Photo by Citybus Renegade
http://www.flickr.com/photos/50522729@N06/

That way you are promoting their work, even though you havent asked for their permission.

Well, you never know with religious fundementalists: they have very peculiar tastes!
And of course all is forgiven at the end!
