I'm sorry, but the harour centre is the worst building in Vancouver, IMO.

The space needle is a classic and the first of its kind. I'm going w/ the needle.

I've always hated Harbour Centre, even when I was a little kid and didn't know any better. The Space Needle is a great focal point and a much better looking structure.

If Vancouver didnt have the harbour center, i dont know what we would do because its always shown in the skyline and it fits in with the downtown, not saying that the space needle doesnt but i like the harbour tower, I like the way it has the hotel underneath and the observation deck and restaraunt uptop and it has such a great view of the downtown area and the ocean and the coastmountains and it is one of the best things in Vancouver, IMO.

This is ridiculous... the space needle is far cooler than the harbour centre. The HC is a joke and a rip off. Vancouver has a better tower with better views and if free, unlike the HC.

I didn't know Harbour Centre was attached to a building! I thought it was always just blocked by another building behind it or in front of it. Uggly! Space Needle's much better!

HC is pretty friggin ugly even if it does have a great view. I don't really like the Space Needle either but it's pretty cool looking compared to some other observation towers I've seen...

Bottom line: observation towers look ugly and out of place in most cities.

i like boxes (if they are not totally monotoned), i like module-style observation towers, but i don't like boxes with observation towers attached to them!!!

dood, they should've at least build the hotel separately and build the observation deck separately close to the water. that'd be good. in its current state the observation deck looks like a later addition to the building.

the space needle is cooler than the harbor center observation deck, but they need to make its elevator shaft look more attractive.

I agree the Harbour Center cannot even compete with Seattle's space needle, but if you take both buildings out of their urban context they both look pretty damn ugly, with the HC taking the cake.I think if the harbour center werent where it is that part of Vancouver would look extremely homogenous, like any other North American city.Same goes for Seattle

What's the free observation deck?

Nevertheless, Harbour Centre's revolving restaurant gives it a distinctive purpose. (well, not too distinct, as revolving restaurants are pretty commonplace anyways. Even the Ryugyong Hotel in North Korea supposedly has 5 different revolvers...)

And yeah I agree, the Space Needle definitely wins.

Hell.. every old Holiday Inn hotel had a revolving restraunt on the top floor.. big whoop!.... the Space needle views are unequalled.. being set away from the central core.

The Space Needle... although not the first observation tower built.. has got to be one of the coolest buildings of its time... the space age theme of the Century 21 Fair worked well with the tower... and gave Seattle a landmark.

I love it when they put large blow up things on the needle. I remember one year a giant crab hanging down the needle... anyway.. SPACE NEEDLE...YOU ROCK!

straight up i never liked the harbour center, space needle is better, but its still not too great itself. the worst is the calgary tower, it looks so in bad condition.

I don't think they are good examples of tower architecture~

I live in Vancouver and I know the Space needle kicks both the CN Tower and the harbour centres ass. They dont compare good though, the Habour Tower is just an observation deck ontop of an office tower.

The Harbour Centre looks like a UFO ship landing on top of the building.

As much as I love Vancouver the Space Needle definetly kicks the HC's ass and the CN towers ass for that matter.

yeah, what the hell is up with those buildings? And it seems like every canadian city has one of them. I can't say I like either of them.

I would say the HC is ulgy as hell. The Space Needle is 1000 times better than that Harbor Centre. I was in Vancouver on Sunday April 17, 2005. I had lots of fun up there, I have pictures and will share with SSC forumers later on.

I think Vancouver at least needs a better observation tower that towers about 1,000 ft with better looking design than that HC. :P It would make Vancouver 1000 times better with that beautiful gleaming observation tower sticking out of the short skyline.

I like the space needle. It's not perfect, but then again nothing really is, but it seems classier IMO.

???

I like the space needle over the harbour centre, especially the new year's fireworks... I wish we did that. I don't mind the harbour centre though, it is a Vancouver landmark and has a good view. I hope they don't build another observation tower, two round observation decks in one skyline looks really bad!

There is a proposed observation tower for Vancouver. Its not an ugly UFO like object. For renderings go to http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?postid=1208618#post1208618 And Vancouver Rocks, space needle is not better than CN.

there's a topic for that tower in the Western Provinces (Canada section) forum as well. unfortunately, this skyscraper was cancelled because it didn't meet the extreme and absurdly high environmental standards in the city and the building density was not justified according to the urban panel as there wasn't enough public amenities to deserve so much density in the building.

does anybody know if Simon Lim is redesigning this tower?

Are we talking about the one that was going to be down the street from Shangri-La? Or the Fringe Tower?

jer4893
April 20th, 2005, 01:51 AM
The one right next to Shangri-La. I didn't know there was oone proposed for the downtown east side.

The down the street from Shangri-La isn't an observation tower though, it is a regular building!
