People responsible for this works often have no taste and care only about how to cut the heating costs with thermomodernisation. MasonicStage™ August 7th, 2010, 08:54 PM ^^ Luckily commieblocks in Yugoslavia were built with normal quality so only facade reconstruction is needed, without any isolation works. yeah, that's true  I heard that in Poland interior isolation is done very bad, everyone can practically hear you taking a bath or any other action  Iluminat August 7th, 2010, 09:24 PM ^^It's supposed to be related with prefab technology but it's not that bad really, my commie is prefab-brick mix and it's quite ok as long as someone above me doesn't start working with drill so f*ng annoying:bash: ^^ Luckily commieblocks in Yugoslavia were built with normal quality so only facade reconstruction is needed, without any isolation works. I don't think you really need thermoisolation in your climate:dunno: Buildings are covered in polystyrene to cut heating costs during winters, it wasn't a problem in the communist times when energy was much cheaper so I don't think it's related with quality. Brutalist style buildings so popular in former Yugoslavia wouldn't work well in our climate (they have no isolation at all unlike panels- it just wasn't enough after '89) so we almost didn't use this style which is sad because I like it very much. harekrsna August 24th, 2010, 12:12 AM does anyone have pictures whit renovated blocks from Rahova Bucharest? harekrsna September 4th, 2010, 02:17 AM Here a quick renovation by the mayor just before the election in Bucharest Romania,Rahova. http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=63114845&postcount=481 http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=63114513&postcount=479 Iluminat September 6th, 2010, 02:25 AM ^^colors seem ok but they still look somehow dirty... harekrsna September 6th, 2010, 09:12 PM ^^colors seem ok but they still look somehow dirty... yes ,the mayor just painted them diluted just before the elections to show that he did something during his mandate.:ohno: Iluminat September 7th, 2010, 01:47 PM Warsaw again http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/5849/zdjcie010n.jpg harekrsna September 7th, 2010, 04:57 PM this warsaw colors have a sad feeling Iluminat September 7th, 2010, 05:17 PM I like the colors but what I don't like is that they flattened the facade. 3 one on the left is not renovated yet. Iluminat September 7th, 2010, 08:13 PM they have polystyrene isolation? Yes, thats the main reason for commieblock renovations I guess also some mineral wool for fire-safety issues. if so, is explicable as no firm today make polystyrene whit decorations molds on it. Well they did on the yellow one but his white neighbhor is flat for some reason and it was even the same company (afaik) that renovated it so I don't really understand this. This one looks like Belgrade and it's among the best renovations with re-created facade etc. I also really like this two: http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/original/25180505.jpg http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/7916/blok8yb.jpg Stettin: Szczecin, ul. I will try and send a few pics from Glasgow when I get a chance as a lot of towerblocks/housing estates are getting re-rendered here and are looking a lot better. Urbangrit September 11th, 2010, 06:04 PM Here are some photos I took earlier today of some large renovated blocks form the south of Glasgow. It's kinda weird that they don't have any balconies but afaik it's not a standard in the UK. It's kinda weird that they don't have any balconies but afaik it's not a standard in the UK. Yes I think so. Heat insulation and damp-proofing membrain. These blocks along with many others in Glasgow have been renovated within the last 2 - 3 years. There are many other small / medium blocks in Glasgow with balconies. I will photograph some of them also and post them on this thread soon. thanks. Hello. I like some of these large slab blocks in Poznan, I think they look really well renovated. Very clean lookiing and soem nice use of neutral colours. Some nice large high rise blocks in there as well. I did not realise there was so many tall tower blocks in Poznan. Urbangrit September 24th, 2010, 11:52 PM I like the shape of this block , Nice archietechture Very interesting and quite tall http://www.wiezowce.katowice.pl/images/gwiazdy5.jpg http://www.wiezowce.katowice.pl/images/gwiazdy10.jpg[/QUOTE] Iluminat September 25th, 2010, 12:51 AM ^^Indeed, even people who dislike commieblocks tend to like them. There are similar towers also in Katowice, based on the same technology but with different balconies called "popcorns (http://mechanofaktura.blogspot.com/2008/11/osiedle-tysiclecia-w-katowicach-cz-4.html)". Iluminat September 25th, 2010, 01:08 AM I think this would be the best renovation in Poznań. It looks like Salmon pink. I think this block would have been better maybe white / light grey with blue balconies as already used. Fron October 19th, 2010, 09:05 PM ^^ I don't know I must admit that we have nothing special here in terms of commie blocks from the time of communism. These 10 stories prefab boring boxes are the dominant ones. Singidunum October 20th, 2010, 12:12 AM What makes them bad imo is that they are too tall for that length so they look like some massive walls. Some have even 15 floors and that should have meant separation into several thinner buildings. I don't think that this type of building exceeds 9 floors in Belgrade, so they are not so noticeable because they are behind the trees. http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/11680757.jpg When they were made taller they were separated into several buildings which makes it look a bit more acceptable http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/28734415.jpg Or they would make them in several steps which is less acceptable but still better than a rectangle shape http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/41278478.jpg And those massive tall and lengthy buildings from Budapest remind me of Moscow http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/37639731.jpg http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/static.panoramio.com/photos/original/37639731.jpg Iluminat October 20th, 2010, 06:29 PM What makes them bad imo is that they are too tall for that length so they look like some massive walls. Some have even 15 floors and that should have meant separation into several thinner buildings. Most of them seem to have about 10 floors which is quite typical, there are similar buildings in Slovakia, Czech rep, Poland etc. those in Moscow are indeed sometimes 16 storey. But I agree they are too wide we sometimes call them meblościanki (http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meblo%C5%9Bcianka) on the Polish forum  Ivanski October 20th, 2010, 07:18 PM I notice that CE commies has very few or rather small balconies, or no balconies at all, why is that? Although having them is a residential advantage, that method of self 'repairing' we have here for instance often messes up the whole design. Btw Glasgow commies on the last page look really good(except for the blue cladding). Iluminat October 20th, 2010, 07:54 PM ^^Balconies are common and they differ in size, sometimes it's basicaly just a balcony door that leads to nowhere but it was considered modern at the time: http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae339/filosss2010/DSCF1351.jpg small balcony type: http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae339/filosss2010/DSCF2877.jpg?1287482928 medium http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae339/filosss2010/cscf4640.jpg?1286909749 big http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/cf/Goc%C5%82aw_-_zesp%C3%B3%C5%82_osiedli_Pragi_Po%C5%82udnie.jpg/800px-Goc%C5%82aw_-_zesp%C3%B3%C5%82_osiedli_Pragi_Po%C5%82udnie.jpg etc. It seems older ones from the '60 tend to have smaller balconies but I think "medium" type is the most common. Singidunum October 20th, 2010, 08:07 PM I guess it's a climate thing. In Southern Europe it's normal for the whole floor to be encompassed with balconies. pets October 20th, 2010, 10:08 PM OMG, warsaw is soo beautiful city, I tottaly enjoy that view: http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae339/filosss2010/DSCF1351.jpg ^^ Ivanski October 20th, 2010, 10:33 PM True , actually commies , especially if they aren't chipper ones fit great along side with the modern business highrises. A lot better comparing to the typical US skyline for example where all the talls are situated in the downtown and the surroundings have only low rise structures. Warsaw now sends out very urban atmosphere. It's great that they are taking good care of the commies in CE, unfortunately people here are more fascinated by the newly postcommie housing buildings that often lack any architecture value and look like poo, although being fancy and expensive. Good news is that there a few undergoing programs for mass refurbishment of commieblocks here , so in a few years local residential could finally dust off their desperate looks and get a fresh face. So I hope there will be plenty of material for that thread soon. Iluminat October 20th, 2010, 11:27 PM Good news is that there a few undergoing programs for mass refurbishment of commieblocks here Government programs like in Germany? I think it's actually a stroke of luck that they don't have terraces, because they're usually small, and people tend to want to add the terrace to the apartment. At least in Bulgaria, they tend to have terraces, and would look better if they had flowerpots, but instead people put windows on them and they look pretty bad. Norsko November 8th, 2010, 06:38 PM Or they would make them in several steps which is less acceptable but still better than a rectangle shape (Singidunum) http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/41278478.jpg That´s what make X Yugo blocks the coolest ones I think. You are a rare species in Poland to care enough and even live in commieblocks. You know, Germans love everything what is nonuniform and in some special way unique. But I like the white color on commies, looks very elegant and subtle. Iluminat October 21st, 2011, 07:28 PM You are a rare species in Poland to care enough and even live in commieblocks. Well living in commieblock is not something special in Poland but few people care where they live, I mean things like architecture etc. for most it's enough if the building is clean and only practical things like location matters. BTW most people in Germany hate the white color on buildings because they are used to associate it with some stuff of modernist architecture and argue that it might stand for some kind of arbitrariness. Really? But for some reason you use a lot of white and other "serious" colors in your renovations. In Poland new housing is mostly white and grey + sometimes some stone (at least in bigger cities) but when it comes to renovations we have a lot of ugly "rainbows", white is usually replaced with yellow, original painting scheme ignored etc. :( You know, Germans love everything what is nonuniform and in some special way unique.
