I am alarmed to see that us Vics are...gulp....very close to being passed by QLD for Olympic representation in Athens. Why haven't we got more athletes coming from VIC ??? Here are the numbers by state ( counted by state of origin, not current residing state for training) from smallest to biggest. To me VIC and SA are lagging behind badly. Look at NSW !!!

State..Athletes..%
Tas........7.......2%
SA........22.......5%
ACT......35.......9%
WA.......42.....10%
QLD......81......20%
VIC.......85.....21%
NSW.....139....34%
TOTAL..411

But how many Gold medals will each State win will be more to the point.

My point is why do we have bugger all Olympic standard athletes vs the rest in the first place. I assume that the BIG V strike rate for winning medals isn't any better. Are we too busy drinking lattes? ;) Sporting captial of Aust ?

The stats you posted say bugger all by itself.

Lets look at the population of each state (the last collumn, 2002 population from ABS).

Tas........7.......2%.....2.4%
SA........22.......5%.....7.7%
ACT......35.......9%.....1.6%
WA.......42.....10%.....9.8%
QLD......81......20%.....18.9%
VIC.......85.....21%.....24.8%
NSW.....139....34%.....33.8%

Now you can see that that the only statistic worth going gaga about is that if you are born in the ACT you are more than 5.5 times more likely to be an Olympian than your avarage Australian. All other states are about average, except for NT, where I imagine all sportpeople end up eaten by crocodiles.

Are the colonies representing themselves at this year's Olympics, or will we be going under that bloody stupid "Australia" name? (who the hell thought of that one)

And the ACT only has high representation because that's where the AIS is.

True, Dynamoultraclean, however, I'm not sure when Christarrant mentioned 'state of origin' he meant birth, or place where they first played their sport competitively. If the former, then it is quite a surprising statistic, if the latter, not so surprising at all.

Or where they live at the moment.

Well, christarrant said "not current residing state for training".

I take that part of the quote to mean not where they live at the moment.

Victorians who've run out of Lipton or Twinings.

I dont think it will matter much where our athletes? (drugs induced) come from by the way things are going we wont win many medals anyway.
