Located in the parish of San Antonio in the canton of Quito, north of downtown Quito.
This monument pyramid, with each side pointing to a cardinal direction, is topped by a balloon of 4.5 m in diameter and 5 tons.
Inside the monument is a small museum that displays items from the indigenous culture of Ecuador, such as clothing, descriptions of the various ethnic groups, and samples of their activities.
Middle of the World has other attractions as a planetarium, and the Central Plaza performs several musical and cultural performances for tourists.
A small town that surrounds the monument on the Ethnographic Museum acts as a tourist center, featuring a replica of a Spanish colonial town called "Ciudad Mitad del Mundo."

I hope everythings alright with yesterdays 6.5M Earthquake, Definatly a beautiful part of our world central America is often overlooked compared to countries like India and China but I think Brazil and the surrounding South American Nations (like Ecuador) will have a big part in the 21st century and beyond.

Magnitude-6.9 earthquake rocks Ecuador

Quito/Washington - A 6.9-magnitude earthquake rocked Ecuador Thursday, the US Geological Survey reported, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.

The earthquake occurred at 0654 (1154 GMT) at a depth of 189 kilometres, with an epicentre about 171 kilometres southeast of capital Quito, the USGS said.

Ecuador's Geophysical Institute said there were no reports of damage and that there were three aftershocks in a 40-second period.

Brief Description
Quito, the capital of Ecuador, was founded in the 16th century on the ruins of an Inca city and stands at an altitude of 2,850 m. Despite the 1917 earthquake, the city has the best-preserved, least altered historic centre in Latin America. The monasteries of San Francisco and Santo Domingo, and the Church and Jesuit College of La Compañía, with their rich interiors, are pure examples of the 'Baroque school of Quito', which is a fusion of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish and indigenous art.

Church of the Society of Jesus

La Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús (The Church of the Society of Jesus, known colloquially as La Compañía) is a Jesuit church in the historic center of Quito, Ecuador. It is one of the most well-known churches in Quito because of its central nave, which is covered in seven tons of gold leaf. It was modeled after the Church of the Gesù and Sant'Ignazio in Rome.

Styled in Latin American Baroque, it took Jesuit priests 160 years to finish construction. Design elements include a near symmetrical facade, Moorish influence in the nave, and artwork by artists of the Quito School of Art. The bell tower was the tallest structure in colonial Quito, but was toppled by two earthquakes in 1859 & 1868. In the past twenty-years, the church has gone under heavy restoration, especially after a fire damaged the interior nave.

The remains of Ecuador's patron saint, Mariana de Jesús, are in a sarcophagus that is part of the main altar.

LA COMPAÑIA DE JESUS

One of the best examples of latinamerican baroque is the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús in Quito, Ecuador. It was started in 1605 and it take it 160 years for the ecuadorian amerindians to complete the building. First designed by Durán Mastrilli but modified later by brother Marcos Guerra in 1636. All the inside of this church is covered in GOLD. Now it's one of the most beautiful and ancients representations of latinamerican baroque.

Green Airport for the Galapagos

The government of Ecuador has just announced that it has green-lighted plans to build the world’s first “ecological airport”… in the Galapagos Islands.

According to spokesman Guillermo Bernal, the project will feature wind and solar power, a retractable roof, and ocean breezes in the place of AC.

The islands are one of the world’s most popular travel destinations, especially for nature enthusiasts, and the biodiversity of the islands was just one of the reasons why the Galapagos were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

Some of the species that call the Galapagos home aren’t found anywhere else in the world.
