Djibouti, officially the Republic of Djibouti, is a country in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Eritrea in the north, Ethiopia in the west and south, and Somalia in the southeast. The remainder of the border is formed by the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Djibouti-City is the nation's capital.

Assal Lake is the most saline body of water in the world outside of Antarctica (saltier than the Dead Sea). It is Africa's lowest point (153 meters below sea level) and the 3rd lowest ponit in the world. It also is the world's 2nd largest salt reserve (after Bolivia). Enjoy pictures of Assal Lake.

Djibouti is a stable country, politically, despite the fact of having the same party in power since independence, the country is stable as well. You are right, there isn't a lack of investment, actually the country attracted billions USD during the last 10 years, numerous projects have been achieved (Doraleh port complex, Kempinski 5 star hotel, 2 new free zones, 7 new banks, other hotels ect...) and there are more daring project planned (high rise buildings in the capital, bridge linking us with Yemen, a new city in the north, a new 4 billions airport ect...). But for this year the FDI were reduced I guess because of the financial crisis.

Yes Qatar is currently mediating to resolve this issue diplomatically, 2 years after Eritrean troops invaded the northern tip of Djibouti. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djiboutian%E2%80%93Eritrean_border_conflict

The 2008 Eritrean aggression was the only armed clash Djibouti had with another country, and it was clear that Eritreans were responsible (the UN, Arab League, African Union, IGAD all blamed Eritrea) and they accepted the Qatari mediation only after the UN adopted a series of sanctions on Eritrea (they've been refusing to withdraw and even to recognize the existence of the conflict!).

Anyway Djibouti was the only neighbor of Eritrea they haven't had a war with, so I guess they had to do it:). But now that it is about to be resolved and that they withdrew their troops, we can say peace is upon us again.

Nop, Arabic is just official on papers (it was a condition to enter the Arab League) and Arabs represent less than 10% of the population. French is the de facto only official language while Afar and Somali, the national languages, are widely spoen, used in media ect...

+1. I agree with you, tho I argue that we get rid of Arabic altogether, it's just symbolic anyway. As for Afar and Somali (indeed sister Cushitic languages, tho not mutually intelligible) make them official with French as working language while progressively replacing French with English on the long term.

They just started teaching Afar and Somali in schools as national languages few years back, so making them official won't happen anytime soon.

Some people argue for the creation of a new Djiboutian language made equally of Afar and Somali (40%-40%) plus Arabic (20%) to create a distinct identity. I oppose tho, I'm too attached to my Somali mother tongue personally.

Nop, Arabic is just official on papers (it was a condition to enter the Arab League) and Arabs represent less than 10% of the population. French is the de facto only official language while Afar and Somali, the national languages, are widely spoen, used in media ect...
