View Full Version : News for San Francisco
texasboy July 21st, 2004, 07:41 AM You know your city is doing something right when this happens. Las Vegas has a new hotel that is proposed called City By The Bay Resort and Casino. The hotel will have San Francisco landmarks such as Coit Tower, Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street, Chinatown, and many others.
Post your thoughts on this hotel.
Here are some renderings

texasboy July 21st, 2004, 07:44 AM I put this in the United States forum because the West Coast forum moves too slow, and it might take hours to get a response.
SJM July 21st, 2004, 09:27 AM Wow now thats going to be an awesome resort and casino. Maybe they should do a Seattle? :)
texasboy July 21st, 2004, 09:46 AM Also in the hotel will be Fisherman's Wharf, the Castro Theatre, the Embarcadero Clock Tower, and Napa vineyards.
streetscapeer July 21st, 2004, 05:04 PM Castro theatre....great, now gay people don't have to go All the way to SF...citybythebay will become the new gay mecca...lol!!
teshadoh July 21st, 2004, 08:10 PM Maybe Las Vegas could develop a hotel influenced by Houston, Phoenix or Atlanta? Oh... that would be the rest of Las Vegas ;)
SILVERLAKE July 21st, 2004, 11:24 PM This also reinforces my idea that Chicago isn't the second city. LA is with SF popping up like this once in awhile like this. Las Vegas has done NY and now they are doing SF, will they ever do Chicago in Vegas? Hell no. Will they do LA, maybe not, especially since LA is just a short drive away anyway.
It is just like how RealWorld did NY, LA then SF and didn't bother to do Chicago until 8th.

Sorry, but I believe none of those cases warrents any real validity of either city being 'second city'. You're talking about a tacky tourist trap & a tv show.

I agree with you except for the tacky tourist trap. Las Vegas has done a tremendous job on their theme hotels. Just look at Paris and the Venetian. I would say New York New York, but the Empire State Building and the Chrysler building looks so fake.

It is tacky, but it still shows the allure of cities like SF over supposedly larger cities.

How about Bourgeoisie Tacky? ;)

So, is this your life's work, Silverlake? Debunking the "myth" that Chicago is America's Second City? It's getting kinda old, and I'm sure you have more interesting things to say than this.
Encinal July 23rd, 2004, 10:41 AM I notice that the shopping complex seems to be modeled on pier 39. A tacky tourist trap imitating a tacky tourist trap. Ridiculous.
Will they have those fake "cable car" tour buses that drive around SF, or will they have real cable cars with bus wheels sticking out the sides?
Gladys8it July 1st, 2005, 12:41 AM Does anyone have any updates on this project? Just curious.
Cheers!!
Phoenix Ashes July 1st, 2005, 01:18 AM Ideally, the entire hotel could be put on springs and jolted every few hours. Then those fake fire socks could rise up and "burn" the city down. Also, the Summer of Love could be reenacted by paid escorts.

I heard it's cancelled.
SDfan July 1st, 2005, 01:30 AM Wow this is starting to get sad. They should have made it for all of California at least, I mean NY is one thing but SF? Well they already have one based on New Orleans so I guess this is fair...
And San Diego is bigger then SF but Im not going to complain about it. Chicago doesn't need to be copied and pasted, its fine being real.
squeemu July 1st, 2005, 01:40 AM I don't understand patterning a casino after a real city, especially one that is less than 500 miles away. It seems that the ones that are patterned after some sort of fantasy are much better ideas.

What's that suppose to mean. :gunz:
SDfan July 1st, 2005, 04:54 AM What's that suppose to mean. :gunz:
It means I don't think SF should be a casino/resort/whatever all by itself. :guns1:

only Silverlake is astute and intellectual enough to realize that Las Vegas's construction of a San Francisco-themed hotel further proves the point that Chicago is in deep decline.
I say this with great respect, as Silverlake has always been one of the greatest minds and most articulate posters on the board. He is, no doubt, correct in his observations about the eminent demise of the Windy City. Silverlake has gone on to further his compelling argument about Chicago's race to irrelevancy by observing that:
• flowers come in an asortment of colors
• birds fly south for the winter
• you can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time
• beans cause gas
• crotch itch isn't painful, but it can be embarassing
Gladys8it July 2nd, 2005, 02:22 AM edsg25,
That is a brilliant assessment of the "Charm" of Silverlake. :hilarious
I've read quite a few of his threads and he's an entertaining chap, no doubt about that.
Ahh, this forum woudn't be the same if it didn't have members like Silverlake. :naughty:
Cheers!!
jiggawhat? July 2nd, 2005, 04:01 AM very cool idea...they should do a seattle!
dewback July 2nd, 2005, 06:20 AM The cancelled the San Francisco based casino? *gasp* I guess Vegas will have to survive with such new projects like:
London Hotel and Casino

Playboy Las Vegas

Harley Davidson Hotel Casino

SDfan July 2nd, 2005, 06:53 AM ^^Are all of those real??
612bv3 July 2nd, 2005, 05:40 PM Aren't all of those cancelled also or are you being sarcastic?
VansTripp July 2nd, 2005, 08:25 PM Las Vegas need have Little Los Angeles, Little Angeleno or Little Hollywood that including with mountain, Hollywood sign, US Bank tower (all skyscraper from Downtown LA), Hollywood bowl, fake highway (cuz LA is car city) and something other.
yoyoniner July 2nd, 2005, 11:49 PM It is tacky, but it still shows the allure of cities like SF over supposedly larger cities.
"Supposedly" larger cities?
queetz@home July 2nd, 2005, 11:53 PM San Francisco isn't that far away from Las Vegas so I don't see why they have to built a resort based on it. Given that the city by the bay is worth an experience itself, people should just experience the real thing instead of a tacky hotel. I'm not a big fan of New York New York either, as well as that London hotel. Its okay to base a hotel on a theme like Treasure Island or Excalibur but on a city? C'mon!
SDfan July 3rd, 2005, 12:37 AM I think they should have a Vegas themed hotel on Vegas.
dewback July 3rd, 2005, 01:31 AM Aren't all of those cancelled also or are you being sarcastic?
I am being sarcastic, but those projects are for real. I am not sure if any of those will become reality thou.
uberalles July 3rd, 2005, 02:48 AM Too bad Silverlake, Chicago will continue to be the architectural capital of the world.
Best we just stick to enjoying our favorite cities and not waste time demeaning others.
For me, Chicago provides endless hours of enjoyment from the earliest buildings to the latest developments. (Trump Tower u/c)
MrMetropolitan July 3rd, 2005, 03:16 AM Personally, I don't like it. I am not a huge fan of Vegas though. I agree with the statement that hotels like Excalibur and Aladdin are OK, but why try to turn a city into a hotel? One honestly cannot say that they have been to New York City by staying a night at New York New York...
Can they?
dewback July 4th, 2005, 12:12 AM No, I don't think so. And of all those "city casinos", New York New York is probably the worst. Its a given that those casinos will play with the monuments of each of the cities for their own good, but the New York casino just ridiculizes the city to a new level. And the interior of the casino isn't that better!
djm19 July 4th, 2005, 12:53 AM I wanna see an LA restort. Even though much of the people who go to las vegas are from LA...and its so close you might as well go to LA...but whatever. Build it!
SDfan July 5th, 2005, 04:02 AM I see like going to Japan and visiting 'America Town'.
And for anyone who watches the Simpsons they know what Im talking about. :)
