Do you see Mantaz there? No? That's because he's stuck in the elevator..

Considering that the zoom levels are the same, let's compare with Moscow :D

Come on now, sOmeOne! :poke: Mantaz isn't stuck in an elevator in Vilnius! Unless of course he's stuck in an elevator in Atlanta, but that's not too likely considering the lowrise sprawl there. :D Yet thank you for the show, although we all know that Moscow is several times larger than Vilnius. Big country, huge capital; small country, smaller capital, that's quite obvious and perfectly normal. :)

Boogy, you can find your house? I thought I had a least a basic handle on Vilnius, but now I'm all confused again. :dunno:

Looking over these pictures I find that coastal cities are particularly fascinating to look at. So I ask that you maybe also come up with Riga and Tallinn? for that Norwegian commieblock, NorthStar! :)

Now that we're on the subject, I can't help sharing a commieblock picture with you that Vaidas took during his recent vacation, a commieblock cluster in Bern, Switzerland:

http://img50.photobucket.com/albums/v152/v4idas/swiss/PICT3761.jpg

Of course Switzerland isn't exactly known for its flourishing commieblock culture--quite the contrary! In fact, beautiful examples of the indigenous Swiss architecture, both in small and large places, can be found in Vaidas' lavushly illustrated travelogue in the foreign architecture section of the Lithuanian forum (http://tinkle.miestai.net/viewtopic.php?t=336&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0). :okay:

And thank you for Riga, Tallinn, Stockholm and Copenhagen as well, sOmeOne! :) Interesting shorelines make for great pictures!

Thanks also for posting SF and Berkeley in the meantime, sOmeOne! I must admit I have a hard time figuring out where exactly Berkeley is myself ... :dunno: We do have a bit of waterfront, and that's the part of orientation that I lack. Could you push your satellite a tiny bit west? Berkeley is "just opposite the Golden Gate [Bridge]. :)

This is surprising!!! Thanks, sOmeOne!!!! Very interesting and quite detailed pictures. Was surprised that you can see the bridges over Daugava on Riga picture - these bridges are not that wide after all.
It seems also that North Europe is taken a bit from angle while Californian pics are straight from above.

LA suburbs look... confusing to say the least. If somebody would drop me there with parachute, I would get lost for many weeks for sure. In forest it is easier to orientate...

I'm rather surprised at the amount of urban sprawl in Stockholm and Helsinki compared to other capitals in the region.

True. And Oslo is also incredible sprawled. Perhaps more so than any other city in Europe (Well, we gotta be "best" in something :D ). To illustrate this, and to show that I am a geek inside, thanks to the link provided here, i've made a map showing the continous urban area of Oslo.

With this original one posted by sOmeOne fresh in mind...
http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v251/b94280904/Sattelite%20Images/Oslo_space.jpg

For me to show the entire urban area, this organic growth that has happened, we need to zoom out alittle. I've tried to illustrate it with this red line. Green box shows the extent of the original image, and blue shows city-borders.
http://img51.photobucket.com/albums/v157/northstar77/diverse/oslo_space4.jpg

Why has Oslo become this way? Well, we have to go back in history to find the explanation for that. The reason is a well established local train network already beeing effective early in the last century. This made Oslo very accessible to the surrounding areas already then, so people started moving to the areas near a station. So sprawl is no new phenomenon. My grandmother comes from one of these "station-towns" outside the image I posted above, and when she is talking about the "good old days", she says "going down to the city", referring to Oslo. Furthermore, the local citizens here consider the areas inside the city, but outside the red line, that is the forests, to be holy ground. I think 90% of the "native" population here would have prefered tons of skyscrapers instead of the forests near the city beeing touched. And frankly, so would I :D
