Benni July 25th, 2004, 03:12 PM Nice pics! Specially the night-shots of the old-town...The surpeme-court looks nice!
However - sacred or not - , I don't really like Jeursalem...The old-town is too old and kinda sandy, the new-town too new...It looks like in East-Berlin/-Germany...
BulldozerGirl July 25th, 2004, 04:13 PM Jerusalem as Israel's capital is still a controversial issue. For now, no matter what Israel says, Tel Aviv will continue to be regarded as the capital by many people.
RoM July 25th, 2004, 07:49 PM It doesnt matter how its considered by "many people" it functions as Israels capital and is such in Israelis eyes...
Benni July 25th, 2004, 10:11 PM I agree with you, RoM! But isn't it the case, that the UNO (or who ever is responsible for such affairs) has not accepted J as the capital yet? As far as I know, most ambassies still are in T.A....
Anyway, this is about th Photos, and not about politics!
intervention July 25th, 2004, 11:29 PM Well, what's the issue re: Jerusalem not being accepted as capital?
Wonderful pics of a wonderful city. Israel is definately on my to visit list.
lumpia July 26th, 2004, 12:57 AM Nice pics :) but Jerusalem is too dangerous, too tense and has too many problems for me to want to visit tho...

Not sure but it looks like "Hezekiah's Tunnel" - part of Jerusalem's ancient water works, this one carved in the 8th Century B.C.

I thought it could be the mikvah in Silwan, below Har HaBiyas. There are stairs at the end of the mikvah pool that lead up under the Har HaBiyas. I haven't been there in the mikvah there for many years.

everythingisone February 2nd, 2005, 04:21 PM Jerusalem as Israel's capital is still a controversial issue. For now, no matter what Israel says, Tel Aviv will continue to be regarded as the capital by many people.
Seeing that you deny Israel the right of defining its own capital, even when it is located in the undisputed part of the city, I am surprised you even accept Tel Aviv as its capital. After all, in your eyes, all of Israel is disputed territory.
Nice pictures. If you have any more of snow covered side strets, please post them.
RoM February 2nd, 2005, 06:01 PM Okay Zohar... Ill stick this thread and put it under the Cities Of Israel Project :)
Monkey February 2nd, 2005, 07:03 PM well done rom:)))))
theKD80 February 5th, 2005, 09:18 AM Jerusalem is not recognized as Israel's capital much in the same way that Israel is not recognized by many Arab and Muslim countries. That is to say it is a question of legitamacy not reality. Foriegn governments don't want to recognize the legitimacy of Israel's claim to Jerusalem for fear of antogonizing the arabs.
Israel exists yet many arab and Muslim countries don't have it on their maps. The fact that some list doesn't site Jerusalem as Israel's capital is irrelevant. All of the aspects of government are carried out in Jerusalem.
Some Arab media even go so far as to say the Israeli government in Tel Aviv made such and such decision. This is ridiculous because the government makes all its decisions in Jerusalem. But hey that's politics.

fandango February 23rd, 2005, 06:30 PM Foreign governments don't recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital because they don't consider half of it to even be in Israel. I could call the West Bank and Gaza Strip the nation of Palestine, but most Israelis would say it doesn't exist because no one acknowledges it.

Hebrewtext March 23rd, 2005, 11:07 AM Jerusalem's unique position among cities of the world derives from its crucial role in religious history as a holy city for three great monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. For thousands of years Jerusalem has been the temporal and spiritual center of the Holy Land, for which more tears and blood have been shed and more prayers offered than for any other region of the world. Jerusalem's powerful emotional appeal has inspired a prodigious outpouring of prose and poetry, artistic renderings, and, of course, maps.

Rivkin April 22nd, 2005, 07:57 AM TEL AVIV AND JERUSALEM it's like sky and land!!!
tel avivi population it's like european secular people!
Jerusalem it's religious city!
u know in Israel says:"When Tel Aviv dancing,Haifa working Jerusalem praying"!
I prefer definitely Jerusalem. I think that secularity doesn't fit to Jews beacause
Jews are made Jews by their religion and when they loose it, they aren't Jews any more and secular ones have lost their religious and very important heritage-their God Adonay. I think that secularity puts Jewish nation into the suffering that comes from restless neighbours in west bank( or shoud I say Judea and Samaria) and Gaza. It is my personal opinion. I love you Israel :grouphug:

Sorry, but you couldn't be more wrong . the most extreme settlers and the greatest supporters of the occupation are very religious Jews , while most of Israel's left wing is totally secular .
Believe me, religion is mainly a destructive fore in this conflict, a great part of the violence from both sides is done in the name of god .
As for the definition of "who is a Jew?" that's been debated for ages with no final conclusion . I'm not a religious person, yet I still feel Jewish .
You should come over to visit Israel if you like it so much, you are more then welcomed . Happy Passover .

Gentlemen, the question of who is a Jew is not open for debate. It is, and always was, defined completely by halachah. As a matter of fact, the very question of 'who is a Jew' is only asked in the context of halachah. One needs not practice Judaism to be Jewish. And by the same token, the mere adherence to Jewish practices and association with Jewish-life does not make one Jewish.
Regarding the mistaken concept of 'occupation' TeLaVivi uses, it is an incorrect phrase and concept. In 1948 the Jews of Israel settled for the land that became the State of Israel. The subsequent wars, when Israel was attacked by the Arab neighbors, created a situation where additional land was brought under the control and security of the State of Israel. It was the State of Israel, not secular Jews and not religous Jews, that maintained and populated those lands in the name of security and whatever else. The fact that years later there is a left-wing group of Israelis that have changed their attitude about lands controlled after Israel was attacked is not a reason to declare that those lands are mostly favored by religous Jews. The leftists of today were the controlling government in the past that captured those very lands from the hands of the attackers. The left should not now cast blame on others that are merely following the precedent set by the left wing many years ago. Today there is a difference of opinion and different set of circumstances. Israel has to deal with its situation in the context of all its people and all its history. I guarantee you that the same group of people today who call this an 'occupation' did not do so years ago when Israel was attacked all the time and people died simply because they were Jewish and lived in Israel. We need to be careful of the rhetoric we use.
Chag Sameach to all of you.

Ok, ok but halachah is completely judaistic value, not secular or so. If one can find answer to the question "who is a jew" from halacha, then one can only have a religious answer, am I right? If we're speking of Jerushalaim, there is no chance to jump over the religious matters-It is a Holy city. So I'm ready to finish that "closed debate" with this kind of an answer. :runaway:

The question of 'Who is a Jew' is only a question with regards to halachah. If you want to ask a similar question from a secular perspective, you need to ask something like, 'what does it take to associate yourself with Judaism?', or something like that. In a secular sense, there can be no definitive response to BEING Jewish or not since there is no definitive source for definitions. There may be a broad range of responses for the secular question. But the responses cannot address who IS a Jew unless the response deals with halachah.
Rivkin May 3rd, 2005, 05:11 PM I agree with you in general but my subjective opinion prefers religious answers, coz I'm a religious person. For me- case closed. :lock:

gilad500 September 11th, 2005, 07:55 PM Wow I just saw on the news that they are starting to build what is called "The Strings Bridge" in the entrance of Jerusalem!!!!here is how it will look like:
http://www.jerusalem.muni.il//imagedb/892515727.jpg
Shohad September 11th, 2005, 08:02 PM yeah i saw that. looks great!
source26 September 11th, 2005, 08:19 PM another calatrava copy of himself..
*yawn*
its boring even before its constructed, he could find
a more creative sculpture shape for jerusalem..
sorry, dont like it because, weve seen it a few times before!
:bash:
oops this is meant for the new bridge thread!
ZOHAR September 11th, 2005, 08:43 PM wow they didn't built it in Tel Aviv (i know we have it in Petah Tikwa)
gilad500 September 11th, 2005, 09:11 PM No, the shape is not new, there is a similar bridge like this one in Rotterdam, and the design is too modern for Jerusalem but generaly it looks good!
Shohad September 11th, 2005, 09:18 PM It's not too modern. Jerusalem needs to work for it's 'new and old' niche thing.
gilad500 September 11th, 2005, 09:53 PM Oh, talking about 'new and old' the bridge is a part of the upcoming Jerusalem "Light Rail" project!!
Saif September 24th, 2005, 04:59 AM I went to the old city of Jerusalem 2 weeks ago after a few years that I wasn't there, and there's simply no place like it on earth ... seriously, this city is one of a kind, no other place has so much history, religions and cultural richness crumbed into one small area . who ever thinks differently simply hasn't been to Jerusalem yet .
Dome of the Rock on temple mount . that's the closest Israeli Jews are allowed to go near .
http://img297.echo.cx/img297/5089/j48wi.jpg
why cant you get closer?
i thought you guys can go everywhere unlike the palistinins

the temple mount has been closed to jews for a while, only recently did the government allow very small groups of jews to visit again,
i think this says something about the nature of the conflict, when Israel restricts the movement of palestinian arabs in the territories it does so for purely security related reasons
however, jews weren't allowed on the temple mount, the most sacred ground to jews, because their mere pressence would be considered offensive to some muslims,
everythingisone September 30th, 2005, 03:27 PM the temple mount has been closed to jews for a while, only recently did the government allow very small groups of jews to visit again,

There are other issues at play here as well. The Temple Mount itself is a place where religous Jewish people would not go because of the Torah precepts of Tumah and Taharah. Another reason is that it is not definatively marked out the areas that are permitted and those not permitted, based on Jewish Torah law. In other words, the Temple Mount retains its status as the 'place' of the Temple, and all the Torah principles regarding the levels of its sanctity still apply today. Therefore, although the site of the Temple is the most revered place for Judaism, it is also the place that religous Jews would not go because of that very sanctity and the applicapable Torah precepts.

goodmood10 October 26th, 2005, 06:58 PM awesome pics! the big problem is that nobody can upload to the site , the spirit of that city , i've been in many cities around the world none of them have that special spirit , you can feel the holiness of this city you can touch it .
source26 October 28th, 2005, 08:19 AM the "problem" a lot of people find with jerusalem taht it makes you feel very heavy, maybe its the history in every corner, the stones, context, climate, the hills, being on the edge of the desert, or whatever but its a special feeling you dont get in any other city.
TalB October 31st, 2005, 10:15 PM A recent ariel of this city.

Quickdraw December 27th, 2005, 01:34 AM the "problem" a lot of people find with jerusalem taht it makes you feel very heavy, maybe its the history in every corner, the stones, context, climate, the hills, being on the edge of the desert, or whatever but its a special feeling you dont get in any other city.
I disagree. Jerusalem has the mystic you speak of because commercial religion has promoted and flooded human culture with a certain image of the city. But it is no more historical than any other ancient city in the old world. And if Judaism/Islam/Christianity was not popular nobody would care about Jerusalem so dont get full of yourselves. You have to be a realist and think for yourselves. And I cant believe one of the members here actually said Israel is the cradle of civilization. But you ignore the thousands of years of life in Africa before humans ever stood a toe in Canaan. Dome of the Rock>>>>>>any thing else in Jerusalem. There should be more pictures of it in this thread.
Gorgon December 27th, 2005, 02:04 AM I agree with source26 in that Jerusalem is a city like no other in its mystic sense. There's no other city like it, Baghdad is supposed to be a super historical city (isn't Iraq supposed to be the cradle of civilization?) but then what's Baghdad famous for nowadays? Not for its fantastic museums, that's for sure. Now it is really too bad that 60 or 70% of the world is divided between Islam and Christianity, but there you go.
Dor. IL December 27th, 2005, 09:27 AM And if Judaism/Islam/Christianity was not popular nobody would care about Jerusalem so dont get full of yourselves.
i dont think so... Jersualem have to much holy for 3 relgions... so if the Jusaism/Islam/Christianity was NOT so popluer many people still take care about it...
But it is no more historical than any other ancient city in the old world
believe ne that yes... she is the only city that ALL the city survive 5,000 years ...
And source26, buetiful pics!! they are from Yemin-Moshe?

nope if you can say that it shows you havent been to jerusalem, even people who are aetheist or who dont come from any religion that sees jerusalem as holy say that the feeling in the city is very special. I dont think Israel is the craddle of civilization but a lot of the rules of conduct and codes of law are based on judaism, but that is for another post. I dont think that anyone that has been to Jerusalem can describe it as "just another city", its not something you can explain, it just feels different.
I was once there with a group of Japanese tourists who had no image of what the city should look like, and they all said that the city has very special feeling about it - "something heavy". and they couldnt explain it either.
you cant feel it from the pictures, you have to feel it when you are there..

urbane June 5th, 2006, 03:35 AM On a Jerusalem map I noticed an area designated as "City Center" just noth of Independece Park and east of the Knesset. I suppose that is considered the modern downtown of Jerusalem. Is that the area in thep picture below ?Are many offices (government and non-government) located there. Is there a cluster of highrises there as well ? Is there a dichotomy in Jerusalem where office and administrative functions take place in the new downtown and the old city takes on tourism and religious functions ?......too many questions ;)

source26 June 9th, 2006, 08:56 AM answers:
the city center is not a "modern" part, it was modern because it was the new city center when jerusalem stopped being a village-city inside the walls in the late 1800's
when the first jewish neighborhoods were built outside, and jaffa street area became their new center (meaning the old city was not the center anymore) but jaffa street and its area are not new, they have scattered hotels, office and residential towers
in the city center alongside "old" buildings of the past 200 years and international style buildings to postmodern towers. the edges of this "city center" are 5: 1) the old city 2) the first jewish outside-the-walls neighborhoods (yemin moshe etc) 3) the government quarter (kiryat ram / ben gurion) 4) the commercial strip in the entance to the city (hotels , public buildings, convention center) 5) new residential neighborhoods - rommema etc.
easier to see it on the map:

goodmood10 January 10th, 2007, 04:08 PM i think that this is a general hospital, it only cooperates with the hebrew university for research, this is the only thing that specilizes it.
shawarma January 10th, 2007, 06:27 PM hadassah is two hospitals.
the bigger one is hadassah ein kerem, which has 22 buildings and will get a 14 floor new hospital tower and new biotech zone which are u.c. I think it has 1000 beds. its the newer one but it looks old, this is where ariel sharon was taken.
hadassah har tzofim was opened in 1939, until 13 april 1948 when a convoy of 77 doctors was all murdered by palestinian gunmen, and the hospital was closed down. it only reopened in 1977. it has 350 beds.

The year 1995 marked the first time we had participants from the Arab world, including Morocco, Egypt and Jordan, and they have continued to attend the JIBF in ensuing years. At the February 2005 JIBF, Palestinians, Arab and Israeli writers participated in a unique literary enounter attendedby numerous publishers, editors and writer from around the world.
One of the JIBF's important events is the awarding of the prestigious Jerusalem Prize to a writer whose work best expresses and promotes the idea of the "freedom of the individual in society".
