Mike____ August 19th, 2010, 11:18 PM ^^ gardens? hmm so where are the trees, flowers, plants, natural stuff ?
Cyrus August 20th, 2010, 12:49 AM This is "Architecture" forum, not a "Nature" forum, of course you can see some trees in the pics too.
About a garden: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden
Constructed elements of a Garden:
Garden beds
Paths
Pool, water garden, or other water elements such as drainage system
Terrace, patio, deck
Lighting
Sculpture,
Buildings such as gazebos, pergolas and follies
For example about gazebos, you can read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gazebo
A gazebo is a pavilion structure, sometimes octagonal, in parks, gardens, and spacious public areas. Gazebos are freestanding or attached to a garden wall, roofed, and open on all sides; they provide shade, shelter, ornamental features in a landscape, and a place to rest. Some gazebos in public parks are large enough to serve as bandstands or rain shelters.
Gazebos include pagodas, pavilions, kiosks, belvederes, follies, alambras, pergolas, and rotundas. Such structures are popular in warm and sunny climates. They are in the literature of China, Persia, and many other classical civilizations, going back to several millennia. Examples of such structures are the garden houses at Montacute House.
Diego N August 20th, 2010, 01:11 AM Amazing pictures, but, you should post more images about the *gardens* itselves. 8P
Think, would be cool.
Cyrus August 20th, 2010, 01:15 PM Ok, this round garden was built by the governor of Yasuj about two hundreds years ago:

tpe August 21st, 2010, 05:07 AM Such lists are meaningless. For example, Ryoanji is magnificent, but I think that the gardens at Katsura are much more beautiful. The gardens of Persia are also magnificent, but who is to say that they are better than the gardens of Versailles and Italy?
Not a true scholar's garden, and not really classical, but Yuan Ming Yuan is certainly noteworthy.

AnOldBlackMarble September 12th, 2010, 10:28 PM The biggest and most famous park in Craiova Romania is "Nicolae Romanescu" Park, located in the southern part of the town. Unique in Romania, this valuable architectural monument is also one of the most interesting accomplishments of its kind in Europe. Through the initiative of Nicolae P. Romanescu, the mayor of Craiova at that time, the park was designed by French architect Émile Rendont. In 1900, the designs for the park won the gold medal at the Paris World Fair. Construction of the park began in 1901 and was completed in 1903. "Nicolae Romanescu" Park is considered to be the third great natural park in Europe. The bridge found in the park was the first cable suspension bridge built in Europe.

ChrisDVD September 16th, 2010, 07:00 PM The Montreal Botanical Garden is one of the biggest and best in the World (the second after London's Kew Royal garden). It covers 185 acres on the Island of Montréal, Québec, Canada. It has the worlds largest chinese garden outside of China. There are 22 000 species of plants, 10 exposition greenghouses, an insect museum (Insectarium) and soon to open, an biodeversity center (research and exposition and conservatory area). Construction began in 1932, and the main garden was finished in 1956.

stevensp September 24th, 2010, 01:07 PM Nice thread, that Historical Shazdeh Garden is a weird thing, never heard of it before, but its quite impressive!:D
And as Elsevillliano already said... the Real Alcazar gardens are really wonderful ones, not too big, not extremely organised, but just wonderful.
Some more extra pictures by me

swerveut December 29th, 2010, 08:22 PM Great thread. The Chinese / Japanese and Iranian gardens are the most beautiful / spectacular IMHO.
European gardens of Versailles, Chatsworth, Vaux-le-Vicomte, Palace of Caserta etc. are more grand than beautiful. And a maze made of hedges does not a beautiful garden make.
capslock December 30th, 2010, 12:33 PM Some beautiful gardens here. I've never really gone for the formal French tradition of Versaille though. I prefer gardens that are based on interpretted nature as opposed to supposing control over nature - if that makes sense. I find the Japanese examples particularly beautiful for that reason.
I'm surprised no-one's brought up the English Landscape Tradition of Gardens, particularly Stourhead - so I'll do the honours. Where does garden end and natural landscape begin?...

Carot February 29th, 2012, 05:39 PM Wörlitz Gardens, Germany
A late 18th century "garden-realm" in the English style, it contains many follies/fabriques in typical romantic fashion, as well as several larger palaces.
The grounds also encompass several lakes and streams. The nearest important cities are Wittenberg and Dessau, however the gardens themselves lie outside of city limits. The Wörlitz Park is considered to be Germany's best example of the art of the garden.

kristienece2 August 23rd, 2012, 03:16 AM I agree that the gardens at Katsura are much more beautiful. The gardens of Persia are also magnificent, but who is to say that they are better than the gardens of Versailles and Italy? They are very beautiful. I wonder why you can collect them. I like them so much. Hope to have time and money to visit one of them.

desertpunk March 21st, 2013, 08:02 AM Clingendael Japanese Garden
The Japanese Garden was created in the beginning of the 20th century by the former owner of the country estate of Clingendael, Marguérite M. Baroness van Brienen (1871-1939), also called Lady Daisy. Lady Daisy sailed off a number of times by ship to Japan and brought back to the Netherlands a number of lanterns, a water cask, sculptures, the pavilion, the little bridges and several plants. The original design with the serene pond, meandering brook and the winding pathways has remained intact all these years.
The Municipality of The Hague has always taken great care of the Japanese Garden because of its uniqueness and tremendous historical value. The garden was placed on the list of national historical monuments in 2001. Due to its fragility, the garden can be visited only during a short period of the year.
