Audi A9 Concept Starts The Competition In The New Created Luxury Sedan Segment

The Audi A9 is a futuristic proposal for a luxury sport sedan which, in Audi’s car fleet, will be positioned higher than the Audi A8 flagship and will be aimed at the luxury sedan segment which includes models such as Porsche Panamera and the Lamborghini Estoque Concept. The designer, Daniel Garcia, found his inspiration in the architectural designs of Santiago Calatrava’s buildings in “La Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias” meaning The City Of Arts And Sciences which can be found in Valencia, the designers hometown. This strong influence can be seen in the clean flowing lines of the vehicle and futuristic styling features. Calatrava’s buildings look like they come from 100 years in the future.

The A9 concept has amazing features and yet to be discovered revolutionary materials. The windscreen and roof are integrated into a single piece, created using an advanced nano-technology material, which features a self-repairing system and allows for adjustments in color and opacity. The bodywork adapts an electronic painting system which allows the owner to change the color at the touch of a button. Another interesting feature of this structure is that is deformable, meaning it provides greater protection for the passengers than a glass windscreen, in a collision. The proposed drive train is a hybrid setup which uses an internal combustion engine working in conjunction with 4 in-wheel electric motors. This concept is the key to future car design, manufacturing technology, safety standards and user experience.

L'initiative française

Si nous sommes nombreux à rêver d'une voiture à pile à combustible (PAC) de conception et fabrication française, les constructeurs de l'hexagone ne montrent pas grand enthousiasme à nous satisfaire. Renault semble avoir renoncé à donner toute suite à son prototype de Laguna à PAC de 1999, et c'est l'allié Nissan qui serait maintenant en charge. Cela laisse PSA seul en piste. Alors certes, le groupe Peugeot-Citroën ne reste pas inactif. Ils avaient présenté un quad à PAC au salon de Paris, le Quark. Mais un quad, ce n'est qu'un amuse-gueule alors qu'on meurt de faim ! Heureusement qu'un outsider vient apporter un copieux plat de résistance : Michelin.

Michelin n'a jamais produit de voitures, et n'a certainement pas envie de se lancer dans une activité qui le mettrait en concurrence avec ses clients. Néanmoins, en relation avec tous les constructeurs du monde, et organisateur du Challenge Bidendum, la seule compétition automobile internationale dédiée aux automobiles écologiques (reportage sur l'édition 2003), Michelin peut donner une impulsion qui pourrait faire étincelle auprès d'un de ces clients. C'est à peu près le but de ce prototype HY-LIGHT, qui est une sorte des catalogues des meilleures techniques disponibles pour faire une auto propre, et qui donc fonctionne avec une PAC alimentée à l'hydrogène.

Seul défaut de ce HY-LIGHT, mais ce n'est un défaut que pour les chauvins, il n'est pas totalement français, puisque sa PAC, et l'atelier où il a été construit sont suisses (quand on dit que la France est en retard...). Ce choix a probablement été dicté par la volonté de disposer d'un prototype roulant le plus rapidement possible, il fallait alors trouver un fournisseur de PAC ayant déjà, ou pouvant fournir vite, une PAC de la puissance voulue. L'Institut Paul Scherrer (PSI, déjà connu pour avoir collaboré avec Volkswagen) pouvait, il a travaillé en collaboration avec le centre de recherches de Michelin de Givisiez (près de Fribourg).

Mais faire une voiture à PAC n'a pas suffit à Michelin, le groupe en a profité pour y montrer la première application concrète d'une de ses dernières inventions, le Michelin Active Wheel. Ce système, qui est prévu pour la traction électrique est une sorte de moteur-roue, dans lequel on a également intégré tous les éléments de suspension (photo ci-contre). C'est le fruit de nombreuses années de recherche pour optimiser les liaisons au sol (donc le travail des pneumatiques), et il a encore besoin de plusieurs années de développement, mais une majorité d'ingénieurs s'accordent pour dire que les suspensions actives sont l'avenir. Et poids et encombrement réduits ne sont pas les moindres de ces atouts.

Le HY-LIGHT ne pèse en effet que 850 kg, ce qui est ridicule pour une 4 places répondant aux normes de sécurité en vigueur (la voiture est immatriculée). Bien sûr, s'agissant d'un prototype, inutile de chercher à son bord quelque accessoire de confort. Le HY-LIGHT a des portes coulissantes, mais les vitres sont fixes, collées à fleur de carrosserie pour offrir le meilleur aérodynamisme. Cette légereté et cette finesse, c'est ce qui permet au HY-LIGHT d'accélérer de 0 à 100 km/h en 12 s, de monter à 130 km/h en pointe, avec une autonomie de 400 km à la vitesse moyenne de 80 km/h. Tout cela avec des moteurs d'une puissance de 30 kW (41 ch), éventuellement aidés par une paire de supercondensateurs, qui pendant quelques secondes peuvent porter la puissance disponible à 75 kW (102 ch).

Ces supercondensateurs qui ont été améliorés par le PSI, servent à stocker l'énergie récupérée au freinage, avec l'avantage, par rapport à une batterie, de pouvoir ensuite la retransmettre très rapidement. C'est un choix technique inhabituel qui n'est pas unique, car la pile à combustible aussi se distingue. Certes, c'est une PEM (membrane échangeuse de protons) comme toutes les PAC de toutes les voitures à PAC, et elle fonctionne à l'hydrogène et à l'oxygène (également comme toutes les PAC de toutes les voitures à PAC), mais elle ne prend pas son oxygène dans l'air ambiant comme le font toutes les autres voitures à PAC. Non, le HY-LIGHT prend son oxygène dans un réservoir d'oxygène. Ce qui veut dire que pour faire le plein, il y a 2 pleins à faire.

En l'absence de stations d'hydrogène et d'oxygène, cela se fait à 2, un pour tenir la bouteille, un autre pour tenir le tuyau (qui a dit que c'était compliqué les voitures à PAC ?), il suffit de le faire 2 fois. Le grand avantage de cette solution, c'est le rendement. Air pollué, risque de dilution de l'hydrogène par l'azote, risque de présence d'oxyde de carbone qui viendrait bloquer les électrodes, le choix d'utiliser de l'oxygène pur est incontestablement un bon choix pour le fonctionnement d'une PAC, sa durabilité et son rendement. Une PAC plus petite devient possible, mais devoir faire 2 pleins, ce peut-être rhédibitoire pour l'automobiliste moyen...

On sait pourtant déjà que cela marche, puisque la voiture a passé avec succès le test du Challenge Bibendum 2004 (compte-rendu à venir), et surtout, c'est le nec-plus-ultra de l'écologie. Car que sort-il de la PAC ? De l'eau, sous forme de vapeur. Et avec quoi fabrique t-on l'hydrogène et l'oxygène ? Avec de l'eau grâce à un électrolyseur. On peut donc envisager de récupérer la vapeur d'eau émise par le HY-LIGHT (ils le font dans les navettes spatiales), et cette eau, aller la mettre dans l'installation prototype que mettent au point les Entreprises Electriques Fribourgeoises. Cette installation se compose d'un électrolyseur alimenté en électricité par des cellules photovoltaïques.

C'est le cycle de l'hydrogène. Bien sûr, le rendement n'est pas de 100 %, il y a des pertes, mais comment ne pas être conquis ? Ceux qui ne le sont pas peuvent toujours tenter de récupérer les gazs d'échappements des voitures à moteur thermique pour les transformer en essence. Avec l'hydrogène, c'est possible !

The Hydrogen Bus!

This interesting concept of eco bus "Credo E-Bone" was designed by Hungarian designer Peter Simon. This zero-emission bus runs on hydrogen fuel cells and lithium batteries to add sustainability to the public transportation. Powered by four in-wheel electric motors "Credo E-Bone" carries its power sources on its roof. The shell of the bus has been made from lightweight composite plastic that resembles a skeleton structure. Such lightweight construction makes the concept energy-efficient. Hope soon such eco bus will be significant part in eco travel.
