Erran August 27th, 2010, 03:21 AM Jakarta looking very beautiful in those pictures!!
very clean city! :D
To be honest bout cleanliness . . .
Downtown : Yes
Suburb : Big NOO!!
Anyway, bout Jakarta
I like the buildings, designed so well. And another big plus is having many glassy buildings.
But, still lot of empty space to fill.
mkors August 27th, 2010, 03:29 AM Actually Jakarta's suburb is pretty clean like BSD, Lippo Karawaci, Sentul City and I would say they are cleaner than some parts of Jakarta itself...since they are smaller cities and modeled after North American suburbia.

Yes, those area are pretty well developed.
Hope in the future they will be much much better, esp Lippo .
D3Y August 27th, 2010, 04:38 AM I liked jakarta with glassy skyscrapers and modern looking, though perhaps less dense and tall
wino August 27th, 2010, 05:07 AM ^^^ AGREE!!

Manila-X August 31st, 2010, 09:36 AM I would like to see more of Jakarta outside the high-rise areas. I've seen too much of its skyline/skyscrapers I would like to see other parts of the city.
Does Jakarta have any distinctive neighbourhoods say Chinatown (I know there's one in Bogor), an artist/bohemian district, etc?

Yup, Jakarta has its own Chinatown, it's just a stone's throw away from the Old Town (Kota Tua).
Jakarta's Chinatown area is called Glodok, filled with Buddhist temples, traditional Chinese arts, delicacies and shopping centers.

Close to Chinatown is Jakarta's Old Town where many of the buildings predominantly have a flair of the old European style of architecture. The old city (Kota) offer an interesting insight into the capital’s long history, and there are a handful of good museums.

spector August 31st, 2010, 09:13 PM Jakarta also has a vibrant arts district, particularly in the Kemang and Menteng area.
In the posh Menteng subdivision, Central Jakarta, where President Obama grew up as a child, the arts enclave is located at Jalan Surabaya. The street and canal are lined for half a mile with traditional Indonesian arts, glittering brass, jewelry, lamps, fabric and handicrafts. The open-air market winds its way along Jalan Surabaya in the elite residential neighborhood of Menteng.

H&M September 1st, 2010, 07:35 AM Distro avenue and Dining Out distributions, Tebet Utara District
In the quest to relieve young and upwardly mobile teens and young adults of their disposable income, Tebet district Jakarta are lined with distros (independent clothing stores), live music venues and cheap eateries.
And while many other distro-filled areas have become increasingly popular as gathering spaces — including the Cempaka Putih district in Central Jakarta and Jalan Setiabudi in Bandung, West Java — none in the last few years have reached the level of success of the Tebet district, Jakarta. It has become the area for teenagers and young adults to congregate on the weekends, and sometimes even on weekdays.
On weekends, vehicles cruise Jalan Tebet Utara Raya, which is filled with neon signs and music. At the side of the road, hundreds of motorcycles are parked — most of them owned by teens in trendy clothing. Some of the young males wear jackets and suits, obviously preferring style over comfort. The Jakarta heat doesn’t make it easy to hang out with style at open-air food joints but the young women here also make an attempt — and even on cooler nights, they can be found wearing what could be the sexiest clothes this side of a “Sex and the City” episode. Many of the fashion choices are reminiscent of so-called “hipsters” in New York and other major world cities.
By 2003, distros were everywhere and had reached beyond the independent art-scene crowd. Young kids, teens and even adults substituted shopping at traditional boutiques for the hip designs of the distros. Along the way, band merchandise became secondary to the stores’ own clothing lines. Fewer band-related T-shirts were being sold, and more fashionable items took their place.

H&M September 1st, 2010, 07:42 PM Kemang District, South Jakarta
A glimpse of Kemang area might remind you of Kuta street in Bali. Rows of unique art galleries, stylish houses in traditional designs, designer's boutique, fancy restaurant, expatriate communities and a laid-back atmosphere, it all adds up to making Kemang an out-of-the-metropolis experience.
In Kemang, you can easily find dozens of trendy nightspots, offering a myriad of international and traditional cuisines, live music and at amazingly low prices. One of the landmarks is Hotel Grand Kemang, this newly renovated hotel also provides convenient lounges and bars for dining, drinking coffee or even crazy clubbing ‘til the early dawn.
Cooking your home recipes should not be a problem in Kemang. You can find any ingredients you need in the nearby Kemchicks Supermarket, provides almost every imported food and beverage products from all corners of the world.
Should you feel a bit homesick in Indonesia , you could join one of the associations in the neighborhood, among others, American Women’s Association (AWA), Australian & New Zealand Association (ANZA) and Jakarta International Community Center (JICC) where you can obtain practical assistance, find new friends and learn more about the exciting lifestyle of Jakarta.

spector September 5th, 2010, 08:35 PM Senayan District, Jakarta
The Senayan area or sub-district is another shopping heaven in Kebayoran Baru. There are plenty of choices for you here, such as the cozy Plaza Senayan, the stylish Senayan City and the Senayan Sport and Trading Center or STC. The district soon grew to be one of the areas with the most facilities and landmarks. One of its distinguishing traits is the number of shopping facilities, from traditional markets to luxurious shopping centers.
The Senayan Golf Club, inside the Senayan Sport Complex, is located comfortably near the Jakarta Stock Exchange Building and the Plaza Senayan. A great way to relieve your mind from working pressures without having to go far from the office! If you are more interested in other sports, there are other sports offerings located inside the complex that will excellently satisfy your interest in various kinds of sports, ranging from basketball, tennis, and even softball.
The Senayan district is also generous with its nightspots. The hip place to be, especially for the youth, is certainly the Embassy Club in Taman Ria Senayan Amusement Park. Still inside the park, don’t miss the Bugils café, a café-bar owned by an expat who is so in touch with his experiences running the bar that he even wrote a book about it. The dutch-style bar is famous for its laid back and cozy ambience, making it a perfect place for expats to relax and feel at home. The Red Square Bar, probably the only Vodka bar in Jakarta , resides comfortably inside the Plaza Senayan. And of course don’t forget the fun and sloppy scene in Jl Falatehan.

Senayan district offers many upscale outdoor dining venues which cater to the city's escalating discerning market with a fine taste. The restaurant-cum-lounge, Portico Terrace Bistro at Senayan City, for instance, overlooks the luxurious Plaza Senayan shopping mall as well as the metropolis' sprawling skyline dotted with cranes. It's a great outdoor spot to hang out amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life in the city. The extremely high floor-to-ceiling glass, minimalist design, gives the place breezy atmosphere. Jakarta's ultra chic and modern outdoor establishments are the latest trend that has been mushrooming due to the society's increasingly discriminating taste in refined and stylish lifestyle.

mkors September 16th, 2010, 06:23 PM Mega Kuningan
Mega Kuningan, the fastest growing district of Jakarta’s Golden Triangle, is an elite commercial area arrayed with embassies, exclusive office buildings, luxury residential towers and shopping malls.
One of the favorites is the Plaza Setiabudi complex. Consisting of Setiabudi Atrium, Setiabudi One and Setiabudi Two buildings, the office complex mixes business and pleasure. Located next to Wisma Bakrie, these buildings contain major oil and gas companies, reputable banks, tours and travel agents, law agencies, and many others, along with a stretch of cozy cafés, Italian restaurants and pizzerias, Japanese sushi bars, beauty parlors, a fitness center and a cinema.
If you’re trapped at the traffic congestion after work, just drop by one of the cafés and clubs in the area to hang out. At the Aphrodite of Klub Rasuna (Taman Rasuna Apartment Building), you will find pool tables, live music and sports channels on large screen TVs. Or lounge with friends at the food court of Pasar Festival, where you can enjoy Jazz music played by Ireng Maulana ( Indonesia ’s jazz maestro) on Friday nights. You could also stop by Planet Hollywood on Jalan Gatot Subroto to try Sylvester Stallone’s mom’s recipe for dinner!

eurico October 16th, 2010, 01:06 AM Jakarta has so many cbd unlike KL or Singapore, from Sudirman Thamrin, Gatot Subroto, Kuningan, Kemayoran, Grogol, Kelapa Gading etc that's make building in Jakarta looks scattered if only they all built in one specific area Jakarta could have one of the best skyline in Asia. In term of building's design Jakarta has a lot of beautiful building and I believe with good economic, good government Jakarta will be more developed in the next upcoming years.
party_animals October 16th, 2010, 01:47 AM ^^
similar to Bangkok in some ways...it looks really scattered, but honestly...scattered skyline isn't that bad :) nice looking Jakarta skyline...looking better everyday
mkors October 16th, 2010, 02:59 AM The thing is each of Jakarta's CBDs by itself is not scattered, it's just that, the existence of so many CBDs makes it seem scattered. If you think about it, you can pick one of Jakarta's CBDs and equate it to KL's or Singapore's CBDs, for example Mega Kuningan CBD = KL's CBD and Sudirman CBD = Singapore's CBD. Essentially, you can fit all of these cities' CBDs into Jakarta. That's how massive Jakarta is.
Don't forget Rasuna Epicentrum (pictures above), just a stone's throw away from Mega Kuningan and Kuningan CBDs, that's going to be a CBD on its own too.
D3Y October 16th, 2010, 07:58 AM ^^so large, Jakarta has a governor and five mayors themselves specifically for this megapolitan city.

Actually KL skyline also scattered from KLCC, KL Sentral, Mid Valley City, Pantai Dalam (where Menara Telekom was located), Mon't Kiara, Bangsar and soon at Sungai Besi is going to be a CBD on its own too..
Mega Kuningan CBD = KL's CBD and Sudirman CBD = Singapore's CBD
KL' CBD is just KLCC only

Yeah, may be we can not compare single Jakarta's CBD with whole KL's CBD. But when we look at the location of whole Jakarta's buildings and CBDs, we will find it covers very huge area, larger than KL

so Bangkok is the biggest city in ASEAN???
eurico October 17th, 2010, 02:13 AM Well maybe our mindset are always looking at western cbd where they have one specific particular area that called cbd, while asian cities I believe different from them. Just compare it Los Angles with Jakarta or KL or Bangkok, LA's building looks centered in one area while Jakarta, KL, Bangkok massively scattered all over the city.
Erran October 17th, 2010, 08:44 AM ^^
so Bangkok is the biggest city in ASEAN???
Yes, the biggest capital city in term of Total area
Bangkok : 1,568.737 km2
Jakarta : 740.28 km2
I don't know about the biggest city in ASEAN. But I'm sure Bangkok is not the biggest one, since I've found that total area of Davao, The Philippines, is 2,444 km2.
In term of population, Jakarta is bigger (might be the biggest in ASEAN) with +/- 9.5 million people (plus about 2 million commuters = 11.5 million ).
party_animals October 17th, 2010, 09:34 AM ^^
no...i mean in terms of everything, not the land area...like in EU..when u talked about the largest city..people think of London or Paris

A lot of those impressive super tall proposals are now resurrected such as the Signature tower in the SCBD area which will be accompanied by Pacific Place second phase. That one is going to be major! Then there is the BUMN tower and the Khatulistiwa tower, all around Bundaran HI. The Kebon Melati Development which will cover 10 hectares of land behind Grand Indonesia is probably going to be one of the most anticipated projects in Central Jakarta.
Not to mention Kuningan City, Ciputra World Jakarta and Rasuna Epicentrum mega developments all in the same vicinity of Kuningan area. I've only mentioned a few examples which is like a blip on the radar screen. There is just so much, it's so exciting!
I reckon there are more awesome projects now than back in the 90's.

Manila-X January 17th, 2011, 04:08 AM so,Jabodetabek is bigger than Metro Manila,rite?
Yes but compared to Greater Manila Area which includes its surrounding provinces?
Anyway it doesn't matter which is bigger. Both Jakarta and Manila are the largest cities in South East Asia.
David-80 January 17th, 2011, 05:39 AM melvinIndonesia, you dont compare Greater Jakarta with Metro Manila, because those two are different, the comparison should be Metro Manila and DKI jakarta.
Like WANCH said, greater manila including other province is the rite comparison with Jabodetabek. because tangerang is a different province alongside bekasi and bogor (west java province). they even have different law and governor with DKI jakarta
anyway, let just post jakarta pictures :okay:
cheers
Manila-X January 17th, 2011, 06:26 AM As for pics, Does Jakarta have any ethnic communities other than Chinatown? I heard there is a Korea town there.
Erran January 17th, 2011, 11:49 AM DKI Jakarta is a single city, same as Manila, or Taguig, or Mandaluyong, etc. The 5 municipalities are not real independent cities. Each doesn't have local congress, the mayor is directly chosen by the Governor, not by direct election - that's why we can not say each "municipalities" as an independent city. We have law bout what city is and its requirements.
They divide it to be 5 just to make easier in controling and managing the development in each area. DKI Jakarta is a single city, as well as an independent province. That's why we put "DKI" or Special Capital Region in front of "Jakarta".

That is what I dislike about Metro Manila where instead of having wards, boroughs, etc., you have independent cities with its own mayor, own traffic enforcement, etc. And this leads to CHAOS. Metro Manila is better off like Tokyo when it comes to government.
D3Y January 18th, 2011, 08:14 AM @ Erran.., u forget kepulauan seribu as part of DKI :)
tollfreak January 18th, 2011, 11:29 AM As for pics, Does Jakarta have any ethnic communities other than Chinatown? I heard there is a Korea town there.
Jakarta has a Little Tokyo (concentrated in the Melawai-Blok M area) and a Koreatown which is rather spread out on different streets also near the Little Tokyo area in the Kebayoran Baru neighborhood in South Jakarta. I heard a small Indian community can be found in Pasar Baru,Central Jakarta.
Anyone can help me with pics? I found a recent article though regarding Little Tokyo

Hmm, I'd say Jakarta's suburbs malls are reminiscent of US' malls, but the malls in downtown Jakarta themselves are unrivaled by the plain US' malls, except maybe Bergdorf Goodman New York or the City Center Crystal in Las Vegas.
I mean, have you seen the size of Jakarta's Louis Vuitton in Pacific Place and Plaza Indonesia alone in the links I've posted above? Plus we don't have JC Penney.
If you want some comparison to know what Jakarta malls are like, look at IFC Mall in Shanghai or ION Orchard. Jakarta has 5 of those luxurious malls, and it will be 6 this year with Ciputra World Jakarta slated to finish this June 2011 with its Galeries Lafayette.
Erran January 30th, 2011, 02:50 AM ^^
Yeah, it proves that we are so consumptive, in positive way, so that our economy could run smoothly every year.:lol:
We do not need the extra big malls tho', mid-sized but sophisticated ones r better.

sc4 January 30th, 2011, 11:10 AM ^^ Can you imagine how Jakarta would look like if all those highrises were clustered around the waterfront, facing the open sea?? I bet it would've been one of the best waterfront cities skyline
mkors January 30th, 2011, 05:21 PM True that sc4, currently though there has been several massive developments to gentrify Jakarta's waterfront such as Regatta, Green Bay Pluit, Ancol Mansion, just to name a few. The Regatta is on the cusp of developing its second phase, and alongside Regatta is Green Bay Pluit, a mega waterfront superblock containing rows of luxury condos.
Green Bay Pluit

sc4 January 30th, 2011, 06:20 PM ^^ Ah...ok nice to know that. I was just wondering how come those existing highrises was not developed earlier at the seashore? Most cities would've taken advantage of it for the sea view........
tollfreak January 30th, 2011, 06:30 PM ^^ I think a reason this area's development is/was somewhat hindered is due to Flooding (espcially flash ones) still becoming a problem (although on a less intense scale compared to the past) on some low lying areas near the Jakarta Waterfront, such as Pluit and Ancol. Even when its sunny, the water level on the creek beside the main road in Ancol/Mangga Dua is practically on the same level as the surface of the road.
On the other hand, The Dutch did actually take advantage of the waterfront though...establishing their downtown and government center very close to the sea
mkors January 30th, 2011, 06:34 PM Jakarta's waterfront is a bit far up north and the city has always been developed centrally where most of administrative and political center are located.
On the other hand, North Jakarta was originally developed for tourism industry, with big amusement parks, which still exist and currently undergoing massive expansion as well. As more and more people enjoy living in the waterfront, property developers start building all these fancy condos.
Some cities were just developed as inland cities, such as Paris, London, Milan, for reasons due to centrally located thus being able to serve more purpose to encompass more regions around it.
eurico January 31st, 2011, 01:16 AM and due the fact that 40% of Jakarta's land is below sea level

Personally I love scattered skylines that spread out forever, they look futuristic or sci-fi, like something out of Star Wars or Blade Runner.
Jakarta looks very cool in most of these pics, thanks everyone for posting :okay:

party_animals March 14th, 2011, 08:17 AM Bangkok is lacking of nice design buildings (more and more has been addeed but it's not enough though) while Jakarta is lacking of density and height (but in some angles, the city seems to be really dense)...the two cities should be combined :p don't u think :)
unity March 14th, 2011, 03:57 PM I will be so glad if we can...:D
Bangkok with it's density and all of the uniqueness mix with Jakarta's classy design skyscrapers and all of it's chaos...
Maybe we can call it Jangkok or Bangkarta??
The fact that our main business district are concentrated along main street and road, not in a cluster making it really look too scattered. The only business center that concentrate in a cluster is only SCBD (Sudirman Central Business District) but the it's only account very small percentage for the whole skyline of Jakarta...
The rest is like what you can see here... Scattered everywhere, mixed up with slums, low rises, residential houses, shops, market... everything!! :ohno:
Moncichi March 15th, 2011, 02:25 AM Bangkok is lacking of nice design buildings (more and more has been addeed but it's not enough though) while Jakarta is lacking of density and height (but in some angles, the city seems to be really dense)...the two cities should be combined :p don't u think :)
The reason why from some angles Jakarta looks really dense is because there are indeed clusters of high density CBDs such as Kuningan, Mega Kuningan, Sudirman, Senayan, just to name a few. It only looks scattered because these districts are not connected with one another although separated by only a few miles, thus creating an illusion of sparsely placed buildings.

You know that those some of that houses is expensive one, don't you?? among them are Menteng area close with Bundaran HI area, Sunter area close with Kemayoran Area, not to mention Widya Chandra area which is close with SCBD area is our ministers residences and there's a lot more of that. Maybe from skyline they look small and dense but when we look on street level they're expensive houses.
party_animals March 15th, 2011, 09:15 AM emmm...I prefer bangkatar...not Jangkok please :p hahaha

Yes, I know...
That's why I said 'mixed up'...
We got residentials, slums, shophouses, etc...

Erran March 18th, 2011, 10:08 AM ^^ Jakarta is really scattered
I even can not see real CBD.
But yes, thumbs up for those quality glassy buildings.
eurico March 18th, 2011, 05:25 PM ^^ for me the real cbd of Jakarta is from Jenderal Sudirman street up to MH. Thamrin street  but you are right we can not see whole of Jenderal Sudirman street from that picture
Erran March 19th, 2011, 01:21 AM ^^
Yeah, Thamrin - Sudirman is the heart of Jakarta, IMO, relatively cleaner and better organized. But if I were questioned which one was my fave, I would answer Mega Kuningan.
eurico March 19th, 2011, 02:45 AM ^^ I prefer SCBD, more promising IMO hehehe
dochan March 19th, 2011, 05:10 AM I prefer the 'real' downtown feel, not an area organized by a company (CBDs), so I like Thamrin :) I can feel the real Jakarta there.
eurico March 20th, 2011, 01:47 PM ^^ what I like about Thamrin street is the pedestrian and the building at this street is not seperated by fence from the pedestrian walk, but some buildings in this street is too old
Erran March 21st, 2011, 07:23 AM ^^
And minus the height of the buildings.
Just imagine if all the buildings in that street have at least 200m in height, it would be very perfectly amazing. just my day dream.
eurico March 22nd, 2011, 03:01 AM ^^ IMO only Plaza Indonesia Complex and Departemen Agama Tower that worth to see in Thamrin street, while the others is too old that they should demolish it and build something higher

Manila-X April 7th, 2011, 06:21 AM If there is one thing I like about Jakarta's skyline is you have clusters of high-rises surrounded by low-rise structures. Most structures in this city are like 1 to 3 story high. While those in business districts are either medium or high-rise.

Manila-X May 20th, 2011, 06:15 AM If there is one thing I noticed about Jakarta that is development especially high-rise buildings are mostly linear. Most are around the main boulevard.
crossboneka May 20th, 2011, 08:27 AM looking great! we don't often see aerials of jakarta.

Jakarta still lacks in density. It's clearly seen from those aerial photos.

icracked May 23rd, 2011, 06:23 AM ^^Jakarta has too much open space between the buildings, its one of the least dense Asian capitals.
Erran May 23rd, 2011, 07:21 AM ^^
Yup, agree with you.
I hope with the rise of construction sector, it will be filled with many glassy 200++m buildings soon.:lol::lol:
Manila-X May 23rd, 2011, 08:18 AM Like I said earlier, Jakarta's density seems to be in a linear manner. Its like these high-rises are creating a wall-like pattern.

Nice pic, I love SCBD for those glassy buildings :okay:

There are also concentrated CBDs in Jakarta such as the Sudirman CBD, Mega Kuningan CBD and Senayan CBD. Thamrin Boulevard's densely developed corridor is reminiscent of Los Angeles' linear business district on Wilshire Boulevard, which is how it was modeled.

Despite these CBDs being concentrated, there are still spaces between buildings for the meantime.

I agree with your opinion with Tharmin and Wilshire. I actually have a friend who was an expat in Jakarta and is now living in LA. Mentioned that both cities have something in common.
mkors May 24th, 2011, 05:15 AM ^^ That aerial view is actually still Thamrin district and the plot of land with the landed houses across the river from the BNI 46 building will be developed into a more concentrated CBD like Sudirman CBD/Mega Kuningan CBD.
