I made this for me.. and anyone else who finds a cool picture and wants to post it. No need to make a whole thread for 1 pic..

So that is what i propose!

i will start it off with this massive aerial:

I love aerials like this.

It's a pity there is a little bit of distortion in the middle, but still it's a great view.

It is interesting to see the Valley area, and also part of the Ekka grounds from above.

Also following the train lines from Roma Street through the city and to the Valley and beyond. Are there new tunnels between Roma st and Central?

The Brisbane Square site is huge, and this above view also lets you see just what a big wasted ugly space there has been on Roma Street for so many years.

Blend, I think one issue about all encompassing picture threads is that for people still on 56 kbps, they can be murder to download after a while. I had made quite a few in the past, but generally now I start a new thread with 10 or so pictures in it.

i also noticed the blurry center...

It also lets you see how many potential sites there are in the city.. there are so many small buildings which could be demolished for bigger towers.

i recently put up a thread with a whole bunch of pics, but i also noticed i keep coming across random pics and wanting to post them. i dont wanna create a whole thread for 1 pic, so i thought this was the answer. thanks for explaining it aussie_bhoy. much better way to get the message to me, better than "im sick of these bloody threads"

I also think that they should put an observation tower in the city botanic gardens.. right where that grey circle is. That would be a very good place for it.

Brisbane 2000. As with a lot of developer’s pictures, the river is a bit un-natural. Good view of the area behind Southbank though, with my old school State High prominent.

Edit- have noticed that for some reason the top picture doesn't alwasy show. Try right clicking, copying the properties and pasting it into the address bar on a new browser window.

Blend's image also shows how much of an impact Northbank, if treated intelligently, could have on the CBD. Effectively we could gain another block, stretching the whole length of the CBD. I think that the city would actually feel bigger. As long ast Northbank is habitable urban space, and is not just another southbank oddity.

The CBD looks so small and fragile, in the context of larger Brisbane. I can see why Brisbanites, especially those on this forum, are so precious about the CBD. Its so vulnerable, neither here nor there, neither good or bad, open for love and for heavy criticism. The CBD is at a point where it could still be anything. Unlike Melbourne, Sydney or even Adelaide, its a place in severe flux, a place whose character remains unresolved. However I must also say that Blend's image shows how much potential the city has to be a fantastic place.

Wow, the most remakable thing about that first aerial pic is how much the city has changed.

Northbank would be good, but southbank is an exceptional success, it's quite busy all days of the week. It would be great to see a mirror of it on the waterfront of northbank (*insert mangrove conservationists scream*). Of course with a more CBD feel - some larger office / residential towers included.

Just something else to make walking along the river there a pleasure rather than the bit of a hole it is atm under the expressway.

I never quite realised how much land QUT really does take up in comparison to the CBD before I saw that shot.

is north bank the kangaroo point area?

i must say it definitly needs something. I really didnt enjoy walking all the way up to the story bridge, getting a bit lost on the way... so quite, nearly no other pedestrians. then i got over there and its dead. no one around at all.

It definitily needs some life pumped into it!

No Northbank would be opposite Southbank - ie. Where the Riverside Expressway is. Northbank was several proposals to cover the express way and open up that side of the river. The Kangaroo point area IMO is quite nice with BBQ's and picnic areas etc. It gets busy on the weekend. Northbank would be part of the CBD and so obviously themed as such.

i have absolutely no idea how they could ever fix 'northbank' then. those roads inhibit so much. Unless they made the river smaller.. but who wants to have those damn roads above them while theyre relaxing by the river!?

i think that more bridges are needed in these places.

Its too hard to get from the CBD to places like kangaroo point, and its along way between the bridge that comes off queen st, and the one under the captain cook bridge.

The Botanic Bridge would work, if it was a tunnel. Environmentalists etc would be fuming that a road would be planned for this area. Personally I am all for it.

The state government released the Northbank scheme, quite out of the blue, in late 2002 or maybe early 2003. They published 4 options, with each option having an increasing amount of proposed development. All options invloved covering the city expressway to some degree.

Option 4 - the ultimate option - had a lot of pedestrian plaza and built space positioned over the expressway. Basically when you arrived on North Quay from Turbot, Herschel, Ann, Adelaide, or Queen Sts you would be able to access the riverbank.

However at this point in time, (it was in the days before Soorley's tunnel), relations between city hall and Parliament House were not good. The council attacked the proposals, saying that they were mere facades attached to an ugly eyesore. They said that the northabnk proposal should go the extra mile and attempt to solve some of the transport problems in the inner city.

After some heat in the media, Beattie pulled the northbank proposal back, so that the state government could undertake more planning. As far as I remember, they had promised to report back to the public last November, with a revised series of options. But we are still waiting for the new options to be released.

The idea would be to dampen the noise from the express way and hide it (like a covered burial), so that you don't notice it. It's a challenging project though. But it has some promise because land in that area is reasonably valuable, especially to government departments. And the success of southbank makes private investment likely. The hardest bit of course is figuring out how to make a major peice of infrastructure like the express way invisible without ruining its vital functionality.

It's really quite a difference from the current situation:

But of course it's still in the very early stages of anoyone actually beginning to think about actually doing something tangible. If it gets done I wouldn't expect it for another 5-10 years.

i think that more bridges are needed in these places.

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v280/Blend/bridgesbris.jpg

Its too hard to get from the CBD to places like kangaroo point, and its along way between the bridge that comes off queen st, and the one under the captain cook bridge.

If those are traffic bridges you're proposing the result would be an absolute disaster. There are already sufficient pedestrian bridges for 2 of those locations, another at Mary St wouldn't be too much to ask though. You don't want to build a traffic bridge there and draw cars through the CBD. That end of the CBD is currently 'just bearable', and since you can't widen the roads any bridge would push it over the top.

Three will however be a tunnel built from Wollongabba to meet up with the other end of the ICB to divert traffic around the CBD. If you're driving it's already very easy to get from the CBD to kangaroo PT or southbank.

The bridge you pointed out from the gardens would actually be about here:
http://www.shadodotnet.net/photos/brisbane/20040625/images/DSC08364.JPG (http://www.shadodotnet.net/photos/brisbane/20040625/images/DSC08364.htm)

Going from essentially nowhere to nowhere through some environmental areas. It would never go though, especially since the goodwill bridge is just around the corner. Which isn't show in the map / or on the picture because both are obviously quite old.

Ok, well that's a little more sensible. It just threw me off being as one of the proposed ones is virtually right next to the goodwill bridge. I just guess there isn't much in the way of commercial activity at kangaroo point, so they're not going to build a bridge or two there for use of the residents only. There's already the city cat for them to get to work, and being an upmarket area, the belief of most residents in such an area is that a bridge from the city will make thier homes more accessible to theives / vandals etc.

Very interesting proposals, toning down the colour of the expressway from bright white might also be a good start, and redoing the lights away from the glarey gulag look might help as well. That side of the river certainly needs civilising. The cliff top along south bank - Kangaroo Pt could do with a face lift, it must have the most butt ugly bunch of blocks on it.

Good pictures JayT. New Farm has a couple of old, ugly 70's high rises, Glenfalloch is probably one of the better ones. It seems amazing now that they could have been so short sided to not take advantage of the views.

Myer centre sure is a big chunky building.

Blend
July 26th, 2004, 11:29 AM
i think myer center needs to have something built on top of it. or knock it down and build a big scraper there, and have the bottom 12-15 levels as 'the myer center' still, and the tops as office space.

Aussie Bhoy
July 26th, 2004, 12:00 PM
I think you are asking a lot, knock it down? It is one of the most important buildings in town, the rents it must make would be huge. Besides Myer, there are many shops, a huge food court, a multi-cinema centre and an underground bus station.

I do agree it would have been nice to have topped it with a scraper, or even a tower like Sydney's centrepoint.

Blend
July 26th, 2004, 12:13 PM
i am aware of the large difficulty that they would have doing it, and theyd have to do it in parts. It isnt going to last forever, because it WILL get too old, and it DOES take up valuable space. (it itself is obviously valuable, but as we know it isnt taking up the space UPWARDS that is not being used)

maybe a gradual renovation of the bottom, slowly taking it all down and puttting it back as a podium? and then construction could go on with the tower while the centre was run as normal.

Blend
July 26th, 2004, 12:51 PM
btw jayt. whered you get your infomration about myer centre and the '40,000,000' people a year?

I would personally estimate it at more like 15-20 million a year. but if you have credible source i will have no choice but to believe you

Brizbane2
July 26th, 2004, 02:02 PM
My biggest gripe with the Myer centre is the Elizabeth St Facade. If I wanted anything done, it would be to create 2 arcades through from Elizabeth to Queen, rip out all the crap ramps and blank walls on the Elizabeth st facade, and reline it with shops, and cheap food joints. Its a shockingly bad building really. Its not even urban, id describe it more as a suburban shopping centre design that has been squeezed into an urban site.

I read on their website about 3 years ago that they had 36 million people a year pass through and it was the busiest underground bus station in the world. I just rounded it off to 40 million because 3 years has lapsed and the city is much busier now. It could be more.

I agree with Brizbane2 about the facade of the Elizabeth St side, especially given that they were able to keep the Queen St side. Even if the arches were panelled glass it would make a bit of a difference, and they could do with opening it up at street level, but then they would have to remove shops which means less rent. Having said that, they could just open that wall up so the shops went all the way through. As far as building a tower on top of it, I think there are too many height limitations around the mall to allow for this, which is stupid really given that this is the southern side of the mall so over shadowing isnt an issue.

Shado
July 27th, 2004, 08:47 AM
I think for the amount of rent they would lose in closing even parts of it at a time, you could probably buy another block of land with a different set of buildings on it, and knock those down to build a tower instead. Blocks will have to be really really scarce before they consider replacing the Myer Centre.

That is City Plaza blend, it isn't actually paint, the building had it's cement covered over last year with panels - that's the colour scheme they chose - it's not going to change any time soon (unless it is demolished when the council move to Brisbane Square ... after all it is more then 30 years old now).

it manages to hide in alot of photos and is hard to find a good angle to take a photo of it. have u noticed that as well? usually you only get the tip or the top bit of the building.

Grantus
March 7th, 2005, 09:41 AM
yup, maybe perhaps where it was built, and when it was built, they wernt expecting enything higher to evolve around the water front, and that the city wasnt expected to grow as mutch as it has. It's just a guess but maybe it will help.

We go out on the boat there all the time, yep u sure can hop off and walk around the whole island if u wish to. there is a ranger with a 4WD that patrols the island.

Those huts in the centre of the island belonged to an old leprosy community. this was back on the 50's when ppl thought leprosy was contagious. kinda spooky seeing how its such a nice island. u walk into the bush and it goes all quiet all u can hear is the birds and the rustling of the leaves under your feet and u think ppl died here on the island, what happens if they all didnt die and were left abandoned when the shelter closed, theres only 1 man left alive and he has lost 1 arm and 5 toes and an eye ball and the walk across the interoior of the island screaming for help as he staggers past in pain. arhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! slow and deep screaming "heeeeeelp me, heeeeeeeelp me"

This is a pic of the beach taken around early jan this year. the place is called horse shoe bay for obvious reasons and this is where ppl park the boats, my god some ppl are rich u should see how big some of them are......this guys boat was like 2 storeys and had a jet ski hanging off the back in the air by a crane, so they just lower it in when they want to..... awesome.

I used Neat Image to smooth out that pic. Demo version is at http://www.neatimage.com/download.html. Works best if you do that last, after editing e.g. resizing, brightening, sharpening etc.

Often noise reduction isn't worth it because it destroys some fine detail. To be really fussy you can create a mask in Photoshop (covering just the sky for instance) and smooth that bit more than the rest.

Great Pics JayT! Cant wait till the south side of the river in the second shot is dis-industrialised, it will not only make a difference to the appearance of that side of the river but will strengthen West End as a funky side of town which I think will get a little bit more yuppie but definitely keep its grungy side.

Bloody brilliant. I think I'm a bit unco though, since I can never get my night photos to turn out that sharp, even when I put it on 10sec delay so I'm not touching the camera. Any tips?

defec8R
September 14th, 2005, 04:06 PM
^ My photos aren't razor sharp either at full size. That picture is reduced a lot.

As for tips - you've got a tripod? Make sure it's perfectly still and the camera is tight and not slowly sagging. Focus might be an issue. My camera's autofocus can't be trusted so I lock it manually before shooting.

I thought when I saw that photo that it was great foresight to put in 6 lanes back in the 1930s. How many lanes are there on the Sydney Harbour Bridge which was also built in the "Thirties" ? There are railway lines as well isn't there ??

I love Brisbane at night, the heat, the people, the atmosphere - it has a vibe that no other city in Australia has.

LOVE IT!!

Couple of shots taken this morning from Mt Coot-tha. Was a bit of rain out there, and unfortunately the shots I took where I actually didn't bump the camera were underexposed...
