MIAballinboi July 23rd, 2004, 07:30 PM sorry this news deserves its own thread, looks like metmiami is back on its original plan of 3 towers, maybe due to no office tower demands,
well we might have lost a futuer denser block but we got the tallest back

Sunstorm July 23rd, 2004, 07:55 PM Terrific news, IMO! I'm sure many of you Miami people don't mind sacrificing a little density in exchange for a nice tall tower! Besides, with all of the new buildings being constructed in that complex, it'll provide enough density. I just hope they'll go through with building Met 3 as is in a few years (or sooner, hopefully) w/o tweeking the scale of it anymore (unless they want to make it even taller). I'll admit, I was a little dumbfounded when they added that office component and scaled down the condo part. Glad to see the developers wised up.
Pablo63090 July 23rd, 2004, 08:57 PM Great News. Hopefully It Can Reach 300m.

MIAballinboi July 23rd, 2004, 10:17 PM sorry rx, lol
every friday the miami herald home guide has these updates,
www.miami.com
if u check the properties of the picture u can get the link
Rx727sfl2002 July 23rd, 2004, 10:50 PM hi ballinboi
i saw the picture in the paper yesterday and actually had a discussion with a friend of mines who works in the miami herald and showed hime the newer rendering. it seems that the people that put the pictures in for the stories do a quick search in the database and then insert the first pic they see...
this is a reprint of an article that was printed out about 2 months ago if im correct... but nowhere does it say that metropolitan miami has gone back to its original plans after all you should be seeing alot more density if they can pack it in being that it will mean more profit.
so unless its in type dont go by the picture/rendering shown....
ps miami herald has cutt back on crew lately so they are running off a skeleton crew mostly untrained individuals.
Dale July 24th, 2004, 06:12 AM Yeah, much as I wanted to believe Met3 was back, I had to assume it was a mistake. Hasn't MDM already gotten approval for their amended plan ?
streetscapeer July 24th, 2004, 06:16 AM I hope Met1 breaks ground with in the next few months..does anyone have some info or is it up in the air at the moment?
Dale July 24th, 2004, 07:14 AM It was supposed to have broken ground July / August, and I haven't heard anything to suggest otherwise.
burnzybaby60 July 24th, 2004, 08:15 AM i actually like the denisty more than the hieght anyway. :)
trickykid July 24th, 2004, 10:29 AM I hope this it true, though i have my doubts. I liked the tall tower version a lot better. I dont think it would have been Miami's tallest though, looks only slightly taller than wachovia in this model. Nice and slim and tall nonetheless. http://img45.photobucket.com/albums/v139/legoboy/metmiamimodel.jpg
Dale August 18th, 2004, 10:50 PM The website still advertizes the original configuration.

mianight69 November 14th, 2004, 02:41 AM Newbie here.
Awesome site.
Great to know that there's a group of people out here that love Miami, urbanization, and architecture!
Exciting news about Met but somewhat confusing to me: what's the story, which one is going to be going up first and how tall are each of the towers?
ChuckScraperMiami#1 November 14th, 2004, 04:43 AM I hope this it true, though i have my doubts. I liked the tall tower version a lot better. TRUE and WELCOME :) MiaNight69 :) , THIS IS WHAT The WHOLE MET PROJECT will Look LIKE when ALL is DONE, COMPLETED and OPENED in the YEAR 2010.
There ARE NO Changes to THIS Display, ITS Just LIKe it IS, ALL CONDOS, and a 4 Story MOVIE Theater and Entertainment CENTER, with a WHOLE FOODS MARKET are the GROUND FLOOR of the TALLEST TOWER in the SOUTHEAST ,. South Of ATLANTA, NO MATTER if ITS MET 1, MET 2, or MET 3, ITS GOING to be THE TALLEST MET EVER at 72 Storys , OVER 800 FOOT TALL !!! AND IT WILL BE DONE, no matter WHat Anybody in here says, I Guarantee IT WILL BE DONE, on my Own Words. :)
Dale November 14th, 2004, 06:03 AM But in the model, MET 2 looks pathetic, and MET 3 is not an 800 footer.

Hi ChuckScraperMiami#1,
Thanks for the clarification; that's great news.
I really like the design of The Met. In fact, I like it so much that I've been tempted to just wish that the dupont parcel wouldn't be built on and instead be turned into a park from where The Met, One Miami, Brickel Key could all be admired.
Then again, I also like density. Either way it'll be cool.
I'm just glad that the dupont hotel/condo is being torned down; any plans to do the same to the herald building? (nothing against The Herald; just the architecture of that building-which happens to be in one of the most prominent places in the city).
Again, thanks.
MIAballinboi November 14th, 2004, 02:44 PM ya met3 doesnt even look to have a higher roof than wachovia in that pic,
ChuckScraperMiami#1 November 14th, 2004, 06:52 PM But in the model, MET 2 looks pathetic, and MET 3 is not an 800 footer.
TRUE DALE :) in that Design, ITS CLOSE to 800 FEET :) , BUT it Counts ON HOW HIGH the WHOLE FOODS MARKET at Ground FLOOR IS, That Height Could GO HIGHER :) , because the Higher the GROUND FLOOR is, the Higher THE TOWER. It Could BE 840 FEET , Maybe 850 FEET, We'll know Soon, Because ITS Going to be BUILT, Believe Me :) , THE TALLEST !!!
BHK24 November 14th, 2004, 07:01 PM Hopefully they make it taller, but anyway It will dominate the skyline just like the Wachovia and the Four Seasons.
JR79 November 15th, 2004, 04:53 PM That's good news about Met 3. But what's going on with this 80 story tower I've read about being proposed for Watson Island? Is this still possible? Has it been changed? Is it approved? Can this be the next tallest for Miami?
nimbyhater November 17th, 2004, 05:10 AM JR, i believe that the one on watson was approved for 56 stories, but i mite b wrong...
i thought met 2 was upgraded to being like 70 stories wasnt it?
jzquince69 November 17th, 2004, 06:16 PM Hey guys. i'm new. my into in on "when will miami get a 1,000 footer". Anyway, according to these threads, the Island Gardens Hotel was approved at 56 stories, and the condo tower slated for 80 stories was to go before the city a week or so ago.
Personally, I hope the 80 story tower gets approved. It will be the most uniquely located skyscraper in the US and world, aside from that new tallest for Hong Kong (i think it is on an island in kowloon harbor or something)
jzquince69 November 17th, 2004, 06:17 PM my bad. island garden hotel was approved at 53 stories...
The Mad Hatter!! November 18th, 2004, 12:51 AM 53 lil stories thats b.s. and JZ the hotel in dubai is pretty nice .
ChuckScraperMiami#1 December 20th, 2004, 06:37 AM my bad. island garden hotel was approved at 53 stories...

MIAballinboi December 20th, 2004, 08:06 PM now that this topics back up from the dead,
chucks right met3s back, theyre advertising it all over, i have a pic in my photo thread, its back miamis tallest!!
Dale December 20th, 2004, 08:12 PM Yep, it's front-and-center in a very handsome spread in the latest OCEAN DRIVE.
Perhaps we can reconcile new tallest with 750 ft. in that, based on the pic, the actual roofline of the building could be 750 ft. with the crest bringing it well over 800 ft. ?
streetscapeer December 20th, 2004, 08:14 PM Can someone scan in the ocean drive rendering pleeez!!:)
Dale December 20th, 2004, 08:58 PM Oh, and the pic shows a redesigned Met 2 as well. Looks much better. Same height but "L" shaped with a vertical cylindrical element.
Sorry, Street, ain't got no scanner. :(
MIAballinboi December 20th, 2004, 10:17 PM shit, i cant beleive i missed it on the big rendering i passed by yesterday, u can see in my photo thread, cuz the car was moving and my camera was loading and warming up i couldnt get it !!!!!!!

Forget Chuck for the moment. Check the ads. And the fact that, just as Chuck said, Met 3 is indeed the next phase.
And yes, the one with Shaq on the cover.
The Mad Hatter!! December 21st, 2004, 12:02 AM oh no i don't have the mag,but i was checking there website, but you can't see adds
Dale December 21st, 2004, 12:04 AM oh no i don't have the mag,but i was checking there website,but you can't see adds
The new adds indicate changes to Met 2, with Met 3 being the current phase. And to give Chuck credit, he did say that the saleslady told him that Met 3 would begin selling in December.
south florida dave December 21st, 2004, 12:07 AM so met3 is actually gonna be the next tower going up? & it's gonna be in the 750-800ft range? is that right, guys?
i haven't seen the ocean drive magazine yet, so i have no idea what the tower looks like.

It is the next phase, and according to the pic in the latest add, appears taller than Wachovia.
The Mad Hatter!! December 21st, 2004, 12:25 AM dale can i ask you a question does met 3 look like the original or has it changed
Dale December 21st, 2004, 12:27 AM dale can i ask you a question does met 3 look like the original or has it changed
It looks the same to me, but the base is more detailed.
And come to think of it, Met 2 is pretty much a mirror image of Met 1. Maybe slight differences.
The Mad Hatter!! December 21st, 2004, 12:34 AM ok i'm really getting annoyed by mdm,its seems to me that they aren't sure what to do

ok, cool. that's what i wanted to know.
let's hope it happens. i'd like to think that the excavation work (i assume that's what that is) they've done on the site is a good sign that met3 will be built. i'm a little afraid, though, cause they found the old flagler train tracks on the site. it's pretty cool cause you can actually see them as you drive by. i just hope that's not the sort of thing that would derail (pun intended) this project.
Dale December 21st, 2004, 12:36 AM ok i'm really getting annoyed by mdm,its seems to me that they aren't sure what to do
Here's my sense: (1) They're terrible about updating their website (2) the Herald article was right but got the height wrong.

The Mad Hatter!! December 21st, 2004, 12:40 AM yea this could quite possibly by another miami circle, keep your fingers crossed that they don't find something.who knows they might find flager buried there.
yea there pretty bad at updating the site ,i just checked
Dale December 21st, 2004, 12:44 AM It would be cool if they integrated the old train tracks with the project.
I guess they pretty much have to ?
MIAballinboi December 21st, 2004, 12:55 AM lool uptown, theres train tracks @ the met site i gotta spot this,
chuck was right

Dale December 21st, 2004, 12:59 AM When you drove past the sign, did it look to be about 812 ft. tall ? :)
It looks to be about 812 ft. in OCEAN DRIVE.
The Mad Hatter!! December 21st, 2004, 01:00 AM well maybe the can make atrain that travels around or sumthing,or they'll just remove it
MIAballinboi December 21st, 2004, 01:05 AM man to me it looked like the old design, BUT i didnt notice some differences it didnt look 100 percent like it, but it looks to be taller than wachovia even to the roof, and with the design @ top over 800 and 812 it is!
Dale December 21st, 2004, 01:07 AM man to me it looked like the old design, BUT i didnt notice some differences it didnt look 100 percent like it, but it looks to be taller than wachovia even to the roof, and with the design @ top over 800 and 812 it is!

State rejects Miami plan to build park to host X Games
By Suzy Valentine
The Florida Department of Transportation has vetoed a proposal by Miami city officials to build an extreme-sports park at Interstate 95 and State Road 836, saying it might need the land for highway expansion and activities there could distract motorists.
The 11-acre site between southbound I-95 and the 836, also known as the Dolphin Expressway, had been considered a possible site to host ESPN's X Games.
"We have had a preliminary response which could not allow construction of anything permanent in the event that (the department) needs to expand its expressways," said David Rosemond, chief of staff for City Manager Joe Arriola. "The department also had some concerns that any construction or use would distract drivers - for example, if they saw kids jumping up and down."
Mr. Rosemond said the city hasn't ruled out building an extreme-sports park elsewhere.
"We were very excited about the idea in an area that would present a very attractive venue for kids to perform and watch. We had envisioned a cool place for kids to hang out. It would be a wonderful thing to offer young people who are fanatical about extreme sports," he said. "The challenge is to find another site with the same opportunities but not the same difficulties."
City officials had proposed a structure that could be dismantled if the department needed to expand the highways, but that was rejected, Mr. Rosemond said. "We suggested a temporary structure, but the department was just as concerned that drivers would get distracted and that it would ultimately become liable for any accidents arising from that distraction. We agree that it's a very legitimate concern."
Mr. Rosemond said the city is weighing other options but has more pressing considerations.
"The initiative has been spearheaded by the Neighborhood Enhancement Team, which is now looking at alternative sites. But obviously, the city has major projects of a higher priority."
It's unclear whether the setback could jeopardize Miami's bid to host the X Games for the next two years. The city is competing against Boston and Los Angeles, and although a decision is imminent, there is no firm deadline for the selection.
"The summer games are set to take place in May 2005," said ESPN spokeswoman Maria Elles Scott. "We should learn the venue any time soon, but there's no set date for the announcement."
The games move every two years. Los Angeles hosted the X Games in August for the second year after Miami made an unsuccessful bid for the event. Other host cities in the event's 10 years have been Providence, RI; San Diego; San Francisco and Philadelphia.
the_1_and_only_cuban December 21st, 2004, 01:26 AM So what other titles will met 3 claim?
I know it will be Tallest in Miami, and it will steal the Tallest Residential Tower South of New York away from the Four Seasons. Will it be Tallest of the South? What building is the tallest in the South? I'm pretty sure it is in Atlanta. oh, Who cares, I'm just babbling!!! I can't believe it!! 80 Stories!! Santa has been good to the Miami forumers
the_1_and_only_cuban December 21st, 2004, 01:32 AM Re; X-Games.
Ahh screw the X-games. We got the 2007 Super Bowl AND we had a bunch of award shows this year.. Plus, we might have some of the NBA Championship Series here if all goes well!! Go Shaq, go!!

The Mad Hatter!! December 21st, 2004, 02:21 AM yea i noticed, mia, you left me like a novela,at a cliffhanger wanting more.
MIAballinboi December 21st, 2004, 03:06 AM darn.... cuz i have it on best setting, and i cant take a billion photos in a second, its not a machine gun lool, so when i started to take the pic, it said "focusing", then the car was moving so i had to move the camera to try to capture the sign, but i guess it wasnt perfect!
south florida dave December 21st, 2004, 03:43 AM dave, I was thinking, "He's gonna do it. He's gonna say 'derailed'." :)
it was just too obvious. had to be said. :tongue2:
i picked up the newest ocean drive tonight, which, i gotta say, pains me to spend money on. if not for all the condo ads that piece of shite mag wouldn't be worthy enough to wipe my ass with. anyway, the rendering of met3 looks just like the original rendering released from the very beginning. & met2 is a spitting image of met1 (minor differences aside).
there's also an updated rendering of 1390 brickell in there. looks almost exactly like the original rendering, but a little taller with some of the top units having a silghtly different balcony layout since they're lofts.
Dale December 21st, 2004, 03:44 AM I have a witness !
MIAballinboi December 21st, 2004, 04:12 AM scan em dave!!! you can even email me to host them
wrestlechamp316@bellsouth.net
south florida dave December 21st, 2004, 05:34 AM well, i don't have a scanner, but i might be willing to run by kinko's to scan 'em. not sure if it's really worth it, though, cause both projects look almost exactly like the original renderings. seriously, there's very little difference.
if i can scan 'em tomorrow, i'll do it. but i wouldn't lose any sleep over these.
Dale December 21st, 2004, 05:53 AM dave, just to eyeball the pic, given that Wachovia's in the pic, how tall would you guess Met 3 is ?
south florida dave December 21st, 2004, 06:19 AM man, that's hard to say from that rendering. at least as tall as wachovia. maybe as high as 800ft. or just above that including the decorative top? i agree with your #'s from earlier.
it's a nice looking tower, but i think it would really benefit from some setbacks. it look just a little awkward to me in that rendering. hard to say, though til we see the real thing.
magic-city December 21st, 2004, 09:18 AM http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v506/miami17/Royalpalmdigsite.jpg
Here is a very rare image showing the train tracks that came into the Royal Palm Hotel. This track was used for Private cars and deliveries. The Royal Palm hotel was massive for its time extending more that 600 feet, in fact the western end was on what is now 2nd Ave leading to Brickell Avenue. In this image you can see the sea wall being built around what now is Brickell Key and Wm. Brickell's home next to the Miami Circle site. This image is from about 1928, that last season for the Royal Palm. You can still see evidence of the Big Hurricane of 1926, as the Australian Pines are just starting to grow back. My friend is the lead archeologist at the site hired by the developer as required by law. The train tracks are fantastic and remnants should be preserved. I just spoke to a Railroad historian and he confirmed that this was the southern spur into the Royal Palm Hotel. The Royal Palm hotel was demolished around 1930.
The passenger depot was located at what is now the Freedom Tower from 1896 to 1912 when a larger one was built close to today’s Government Center Metrorail Station. I hope to post some images of these depots soon. History is great, but we are making history NOW!
Hope you enjoy this image and story.

$100 buys you a brick of hotel built by Flagler
History buffs can buy a piece of the famed Royal Palm Hotel, demolished 74 years ago. Archaeologists exploring a downtown Miami site will sell Royal Palm bricks for $100.
BY MARTIN MERZER
mmerzer@herald.com
Take home a piece of the Royal Palm Hotel, a chunk of 19th century South Florida grandeur. The cost -- about $100.
Archaeologists working in the skyscraper shadows of downtown Miami are discovering, dusting and displaying ever-larger foundational sections of the once-magnificent hotel, opened by railroad magnate Henry Flagler in 1897 and razed in 1930.
Now, they plan to sell -- one by one -- 1,500 yellow and red bricks gently pried from the hotel's lower walls, newly unearthed from below the asphalt of a parking lot north of the Dupont Plaza hotel.
Through tax-deductible donations of $100 per brick, project managers hope to raise at least $150,000 for analysis and exhibition of the thousands of much older artifacts recovered from the sprawling site. Some of the discoveries reach back thousands of years, when Tequesta Indians ranged through what is now Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
''It's important for a community to understand its history,'' said Greg Saldaan architectural historian who was working on the site Tuesday. ``This, right here, is a record of our past.''
Each brick can be kept by the buyer and will include a commemorative plaque. Sales should start by June. Proceeds will go to the nonprofit, Davie-based Archaeological and Historical Conservancy, which is running the six-acre dig.
The area, consisting of three adjacent parking lots, will be developed into stores, offices and luxury condominiums. But for now . . . .
''This is the largest archaeological project ever conducted in South Florida -- by far,'' said archaeologist Bob Carr, director of the conservancy, who briefed Miami's Historic and Environmental Preservation Board about the scope of the project Tuesday. ``Every day, we're finding pieces of the area's history.''
That includes slivers of Tequesta pottery, shards of primitive tools and about 15 rusted room keys from the Royal Palm.
In September, Carr and his team reported that they also are finding human remains.
They now have recovered bone fragments from at least five members of the Tequesta tribe that flourished in South Florida for 2,500 years but disappeared by 1763, ravaged by European expansion and the germs carried by explorers.
A CREEK
The remains were found in various corners of the site but mostly in natural sinkholes and along the banks of a creek that trickled through the area 10,000 years ago -- another startling discovery.
''It's pretty hard to imagine a creek here,'' Carr said, surrounded by hotels and high-rise office buildings. The Metromover swooshed overhead, cars rolled along Southwest Third Street and jetliners roared away from the airport.
The human bones were ''highly disturbed,'' said Carr, who helped discover the Miami Circle stone carving on the south bank of the Miami River in 1998.
That means the bones had been scattered over the centuries by previous builders. In addition to the Royal Palm, the area served as the site of early Spanish forts, the 19th century Fort Dallas and a nearby Tequesta cemetery.
''We now know that the cemetery extended well into this site,'' Carr said.
The bones were reported to state officials, Carr said. In general, state law and policy require that human remains are treated with respect and reinterred as closely as possible to the place of discovery. ''That is what we will do,'' he said.
USE OF RADAR
At the moment, much of the effort is dedicated to uncovering the foundation of the Royal Palm and matching the discoveries with archival photos and building plans, often with the help of ground-penetrating radar operated by Mnemotrix Systems Inc. of Coral Springs.
The radar helps archaeologists and other specialists ''see'' underground structures and other promising targets.
The hotel, which stretched 600 feet along the Miami River's north bank, fueled the area's tourism industry. Five stories tall with a sixth-floor salon, it featured the city's first electric lights, elevators and swimming pool.

PREVIOUS SALE
Grievously damaged by the 1926 hurricane, it was demolished four years later. Back then, an ad in The Herald also offered Royal Palm bricks for sale. The price: $14. For each 1,000 bricks.
On Tuesday, Saldathe architectural historian, stood on the terra cotta floor of what was once a corridor through the basement of the Royal Palm.
He made measurements and drew sketches and marveled at what he was seeing and doing.
This was it, right here, right where he stood. The Royal Palm Hotel.
And why was this important?
''This is really about managing cultural resources,'' Saldaaid. ``We are getting to examine an artifact in site, in its context. It's important to record it before the site is developed.''

The Mad Hatter!! December 22nd, 2004, 03:43 PM whoa its going to take a while to finish this
Dale December 22nd, 2004, 04:58 PM Given that Miami Today reported that the project would brek ground early 2004, seems that the project has been delayed a year.
The Mad Hatter!! December 22nd, 2004, 05:42 PM well thats not fair to say because every project in miami is delayed about 3 months thanks to the hurricanes.
Dale December 22nd, 2004, 05:48 PM Well, it's accurate to say the project has been delayed a year, provided that MDM planned to break ground early 2004. It's simply an accurate statement.
The Mad Hatter!! December 22nd, 2004, 06:03 PM yea but im just saying that every project in miami is behind schedule.
Lee December 22nd, 2004, 07:48 PM How come on skyscrapers.com it says this building will only be 720ft?
ISG December 22nd, 2004, 07:50 PM actually blue is ahead of schedule. originally i was told it would be finished by sept. or so and now schedule says july or so.
fyi... i'm told the constructor bought all materials upfront ahead of time so they didd't have to grapple with higher pricies of raw materials and spend time waiting for inventory or to re-run the financials.
MIAballinboi December 22nd, 2004, 10:47 PM lee, cuz emporis is wrong thats why..
and the herald mustav mixed up the heights and towers, so it was a wrong source
Dale December 22nd, 2004, 11:36 PM Never trust newspapers for building heights anyway.

Other host cities in the event's 10 years have been Providence, RI; San Diego; San Francisco and Philadelphia.
i no im a little behind, but i was readin this thread for about a month bak, and i saw this article that i guess i had just missed, this sux, its prob not gonna get done now, miami is notorious for being behind in its skateboarding scene compared to other major cities, i mean tampas considered a million times better than us for christ's sake, and after the games this woulda been a great resource and place for the youth of miami to have a great venue for skateboarding and such, this sux, i hope they find another site... cause i was reallly lukin forward to this, not to mention the exposure the x-games would get miami

Same as the original, only a better detailed rendering, and Met 2 is now essentially a mirror image of Met 1 (w/ minor differences).

AM Magic-City
Jason :) , please save this or Move this very important Thread to the " Miami " Forum, thanks, its a piece of art and history. It has to be saved .
