Can't find much of a skyline

Maybe this is closer to being a skyline photo?

http://i22.tinypic.com/257k3dv.jpg

<There's only one modern tall building, and that's the "Boekentoren" (Book Tower), built in the 1930s - it's the one the most to the right. Most modern talls have been constructed/are planned well outside the city centre - to preserve the historic skyline.>

I'm not rating. I live there :|

From a certain distance. Shows that the skyline isn't very tall. The only structure that exceeds the 100+ limit is a smokestack that belongs to a power plant (in the city centre!).

^^ "Extremely flat"??

Indeed, there are no modern highrises/skyscrapers in this skyline, but that doesn't mean the skyline is flat, or does it? Just take a look at the first pic on this page. The world is a bit older than the Empire State Building, you know. I mean, since when does "skyline" equal "20th/21st century"... and nothing else?

Beautiful city. High rises would mar the skyline of this lovely place. The definition of skyline does not include glass towers. It is defied as an outline of land or buildings defined aganist the sky. 9.5/10

nice architectures, Ghent should try to preserve these rather than building modern buildings, or build them in another district of Ghent.
9/10

And guess what, they are :) The city's main railway station lies a couple of kilometers southwest of the old center, where that gothic skyline is. There's a masterplan that provides in 5 towers between 70 and 90 meters, which is pretty tall to local standards. And even more to the south, the former airfield is slowly being developed into a new business district. The same concept as Paris' La Défense, but obviously on a much smaller scale... One of the first realizations on the spot was a 119m tall office building.

I made this panorama in june 2011:

http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Puinkabouter/2011/06/panorama-2011-06-18-klein.jpg (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Puinkabouter/2011/06/panorama-2011-06-18-groot.jpg)

^^ You can click on it to see a much larger version. You'll see the old skyline and some social housing blocks that lie in the west of the city on the left side of the picture. In the middle there's the station. At that time construction on a 90m office tower still had to start, but in the meantime the core is already halfway up. On the far right of the picture you'll see the 119m office building U/C. That one's finished, by the way.

You can find threads (in dutch) about these buildings here:

GENT : de Link | 90m | 22fl | U/C (2) (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1496871)
SINT-DENIJS : KBC-Arteveldetoren | 119m | 24fl | T/O (3) (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1378687)

Neither of them will impact the old skyline. It's pretty likely that in a couple of years' time, Ghent will have 3 small skylines (old town, station area, old airfield), that will only seem like a complete skyline when seen from a considerable distance.
