Just heard it folks. The big rumor doing the rounds is that the US postal team, along with multi Tour De France winner Lance Armstrong are in negotiations to come to Adelaide in January next year to compete for the fist time in the tour down under. If you have been watching the news at all you would have seen the stories about the French public spitting on and abusing Armstrong. Evidently, him and his team have had enough. My cycle coach, who has links with the TDU, can confirm that the TDU management has been in talks with the US postal management.
Even if you're not interested in cycling, having the world's best, if not one of the all time greatest tour riders coming to Australia, and inparticular Adelaide, is a massive boost for the event. He should be a massive draw card for the event, which has now added extra stages and is getting rave international reviews as one of the best tour races in the world. (obviously not of the calibre of the Tour de France or the tour of Italy - yet ;) )
Still, I thought it is good news, worth reporting all the same!

The sad thing is, as we lift the profile of the event higher and higher, it becomes more likely that Melbourne will steal it.

it would be a great event anywhere i.e through the Dandenongs and Yarra valley in VIC, around the southern highlands and Blue Mtns in NSW or around the Glasshouse mtns in QLD.
What contract length does SA have for this event ????? Is there good sponsorship and crowds ??

You're right - it's getting more appealing all the time. You can be sure someone over here is thinking about it...

I have to say, though, road cycling does not strike me as a good sport to watch live. These guys travel large distances at quite some speed, and so you find yourself staking out a prime spot for hours to see the competitors for a few seconds. I had the opportunity to watch the opening race around Adelaide streets of the TDU a few years ago, and even though they did lots of laps, it was really hard to get into it. Conversely on television it is a wonderful thing to watch. Tour de France regularly causes me to stay up late, especially for live stages, when you get to see so much of the countryside and admire the efforts of these super-fit riders.

You Adelaide people, where do you go to watch the TDU live, and what do you enjoy about it?
