Hi Everyone :)

I thought I should create a thread here for us to share travel experiences and interesting stories.

I love to know where you've been? and what trips are you planning for the future? :)

What's your favorite place you've ever been to? Do you wish that you were there right now, if so, why aren't you LOL?

Nice thread idea BigDreamer,

I have been to quite a few European countries, Sweden, Germany and France. Sweden is okay i went to see family, same with Germany. France was an actual holiday for me (i have no family there! lol). As for the Middle East, i have only been to Iran and Syria but really wish to see Petra in Jordan and the pyramids in Egypt.

Well the most bizarre story was when me and my cousin (we were babies at the time) nearly fell off the roof of my aunts house in Damascus. My mum and aunt caught us both at the right time.

Finally, (unfortunantly) for me, the one place i would love to see but have not is Iraq!! This forum has urged me to go even more especially when i see the updates in the photography section lol. I hope to plan a trip there in the near future. After that i want to take a pit stop to Syria and see some family, i have to say i enjoy myself the most when i am there it is really beautiful, i love everything about that place. And to answer your final question, im not there because of my studies in England lol

What about you? You have to answer your own questions too  :)

I think November is a good month to see Paris, I went to Paris in July this year.. It was soooooo hot! you can't even walk outside.. I rather go in winter (if I ever go there again.. i think Paris was a let down)

I really enjoyed east asia, it was this summer when i was in China, it was a whole new experience since i just was in Europe/NA and ME before, but if Paris was too hot for you in summer you shouldn't go to east asia in summer, best time to travel there is otcober/november, why didn't you like Paris?

@ Sheytan: I had to laugh when i saw that you did write east and west germany  It suprises me that from your long list you did like hungary the most, i was just in Budapest, it's a nice city but imho nothing special, what do you like so much about Hungary?

sheytanElKebir
September 1st, 2010, 09:21 PM
It depends on your taste, but Hungary has always been my favourite place (culture, food, drink, architecture, laid back and not too crowded as well as lots of free events and festivals which are not dull like the german/scandinavian ones)... I know there are people with plenty of other (more famous) preferences... but after Buda, my next choices would be Lyon and Istanbul.

Most Iraqis I know don't like Budapest too much, but its probably because it needs time to understand it.. and also because all the food is non-halal! (well most of it).

I haven't been to alot of places, just Iraq and UAE. I'm planning for a trip to Canada next year (and maybe settle there).

A very funny things happened to me last year when we decided (me and my dad) to travel from Baghdad to Erbil by car.

As we're on our way to Erbil we're stopped by a policeman at checkpoint in Diala and he started to look at me in a weird way! After few questions he said to my dad "do you know how many terrorists we catch everyday that look like your son?" (referring to my beard and my long hair) :shifty: I started laughing, I was terrified from inside though. :ohno:

The second time we're stopped by Kurdish officer and we were asked to step out of the car! The officer rummaged the car and told us to wait, After a very stressful 10 minutes he said "everything is OK you can continue your trip".

After we had a snake at a famous Kurdish restaurant in Tozkhormato (the food was soooo good ) the driver said "do you know that this restaurant was boomed many times?!" :runaway: I told my dad "lets pay and get the hell out of here". I didn't even have my tea

It was a crazy trip, But I had a lot of fun. :)

I have visited Beograd, and I always drive the entire length of serbia several times a year when going between Budapest and Skopje... you know E75 subotica down to vranje! I love southern serbia though. The nature is amazing and full of historical monasteries and small towns. we always stop between leskovac and vranje in the valleys and have lunches in the mountain restaurants...

And yes there are plenty of Feyli Kurds predominantly located in kermanshah ilam, but also a few in khuzestan (particularly in ahwaz). Yes we are Shia along with most Persians but i guess that is where the idealogy behind Saddams actions; which was to deport all Feyli's to Iran because they are "Iranian".! :ohno:

You'll find Assyrians all over Kurdistan! quite a few in duhok also, I don't know about sulemanya though.. and if you know kurdish you won't have any problem communicating with the turkmen or assyrians.

No i don't :ohno: but yes both my parents know Kurdish, Farsi and Arabic. I guess because they were living in Baghdad (i don't like to use the term Arabized) ...anyway they raised me to speak Arabic because it is a more widely spoken and recognised language than Kurdish. All my extended family that lived in "Arab" Iraq all speak Arabic, only the Kurds from the north speak Kurdish.

Interesting, aren't you worried that in 1-2 generations your Kurdish identity will be lost? I mean that's how it starts, your parents acknowledge the fact that they are Kurdish and speak it, you acknowledge the fact you are Kurdish but don't speak it, the next generation will do none in my opinion. No offence. Not liking the word will not change the fact its true :( the same has happend with tukmen in kurdistan they are in the process of being "kurdified" after all they are anti-turkish politics

baghdad_sara
September 5th, 2010, 07:54 PM
Well i suppose its all a matter of how and where you have been raised, the next generation may not even speak Arabic since i am not fluent. So its not so much about preference to what language you will teach your children but rather yur surroundings that affect that. Well yes im not denying that Arabization has not taken place, i just dont like the term since i dont think that's the only reason for opting to teach someone Arabic over another language. My family are very deep rooted with Kurdish culture but Baghdad is their home, and so we celebrate Newroz speaking Arabic  .. lol

I suppose, I mean my granddad was Jewish (Aramaic speaking), my grandmother from my other side is assyrian also Aramaic speaking, so Im only 50% Kurd by blood (possibly less), my family are all hardcore nationalist kurds, everyone from my grandfather to my older cousins have been peshmerga so I guess that's why I've been brought up as a kurd only. Haha :D

Blood does not define kurds, as barzani said "he who speaks kurdish, celebrates its culture and proud is a kurd" it makes more sense in kurdish, but he is absolutely right, becuase physically you can not define a Kurd, we have all from blonds to dark skinned.

diako_ber: Yea but in summer they have trouble with the garbage in CPH as people don't care about their garbage when they go to the beach for instance. They hire extra garbage men in the summer to handle the problem..

Makaay: Do you visit them often? Yea a lot of football tourneys for the youngsters are held in DK..

Shaytan: Haha that's funny. They changed their name to DTU(Denmark's Technical University) now. Did you learn a little bit Danish? :D

and that was before the post 2003 influx! can't imagine what its like now.
