when there is no security, do you think you could get into the site and take some shots of the actual future footprint of the tower?

you are very lucky, at least you didnt waste your or your father money

If you want to waste you can buy something from the Nakheel on the Palm Jebel Ali ,Waterfront or Jumeirah Heights ..

Or maybe try to buy something from the ACI , Niki Lauda Tower,Becker Tower etc.. and what abour the Pavarotti Tower (PJA) ?:)

it's going to be 1.2 kilometers high and they could actually build it at 1.4 kilometers but they won't =P

Personally I dont see much of the point of building the NT.The Burj is a magnificent structure and Dubai now has the tallest building in the world.Thats how it will be for the next 10/15 years minimum you would think.By then Dubai should hopefully be well and truly established on the world stage and would not need to have the tallest building to make the world aware of the city.Right now its just getting established and known by the world so this tower is important.By the time another city goes taller it wont matter like it doesnt matter for New York or Rome.
A NT at 1000m/1200m or whatever would be so much taller and wider than anything in Dubai it just wouldnt look right. The arcs of the Burj have got the size just about right.

I would much prefer to see an emphasis on building iconic and beautiful structures like the Burj Al Arab.I think more of these type of structures would do more to enhance the reputation of Dubai rather than another tallest building to massage the egos of the Dubai leaders.

^^ Yup. not only that, but the country most likely to knock the Burj off top spot is Saudi, which will make no difference to anything as the place will still be a festering shithole. The CTBUH or whatever it's called will then have to create a new category called "tallest building in a country that's not a festering shithole"

PG what a doll you are so full of optimism. How sweet.
The only Nakheel Tower you're ever going to see is the Cityscape model which is in some storeroom collecting dust !
:colgate:

One Tiara too many collecting dust is a terrible thing I know.....:D

It's a complete joke now of course! The way things are, there's no way on earth this tower will see the light of day. If Nakheel really want to do something for the people of Dubai then they should start by completing Palm Jumeirah....if that's not too much to ask for!? Then again, I suppose when you are actually completely broke-ass and incompetent it doesn't help much either does it!? <:|>

But you know what? I love this tower! That's far from being a good enough reason to build this, of course, but I'd really love to see this tower go up!
http://i45.tinypic.com/s112qb.jpg
I mean, look at it! It's incredible! It would easily blow BK away no problem! It's not just taller - but so much bigger in every way than BK! I've always loved the design of NHT even though we'd have a better chance of a manned space flight to the sun right now than seeing them break ground on this one........maybe in a few years things will be different?? This is Dubai..

But anyway, Dubai now has Burj Khalifa, tallest skyscraper on earth, ever, and it's fast becoming a true icon (not a word I use lightly) not just for the city itself....but the world over....just as Tour Eiffel is for Paris/world. It's a great story in the end...:)

On the other hand beautiful doesnt also have to mean big.

Absolutely, Wanna! More original projects such as this in Dubai can only be a good thing. Burj Al Arab is a masterpiece IMO. So beautiful...

In-situ testing key to firm foundations

by Matt Warnock on Feb 2, 2010

http://i45.tinypic.com/95u3ac.jpg
Haberfield designed the footing system for Nakheel's kilometre-high tower which is currently on hold.

One geotechnical and environmental expert has urged others in the field to commit to more in-situ testing rather than allowing all tests to take place in the lab.

Dr Chris Haberfield, principal at Golder Associates – the firm charged with designing the foundations and footing system for Nakheel’s shelved kilometre-high tower – made the appeal while speaking at the Piling & Deep Foundations Middle East Summit, being held in Dubai.

“Originally, the location for the tower was near the Palm Jebel Ali; however, that changed to a second site near Ibn Battuta,” explained Haberfield, whose firm not only needed to examine the geotechnical effects of a two-million-tonne dead load, but also needed to overcome the challenges caused by significant bearing pressures coupled with soft rock.

”Geologically, the sites were very similar, so we were able to use the information we had from site one and improve our data for the second site.

“We used triple tube coring, as this provides a continuous long length, rather than the broken samples you receive from double tube.”

The samples were then wrapped, packaged and sent for testing in laboratories in Dubai, Australia and the UK.

However, the team also made significant breakthroughs in on-site testing, explained Haberfield, with elastic stiffness, bond yield strength, displacement and variability yield tested in-situ.

“We developed a scratch hardness test that could be done straight away on-site.”

The results helped Golder, along with contractors such as WSP and Fugro ME, formulate a foundation and piling approach to anchor the world’s tallest and biggest tower – with a 100m diameter.

And, added Haberfield, while Dubai has a simple geology, there are differentials that need to be considered for such a project.

“Surface sand goes down to about six metres; variable cemented sand runs from six metres to 20 metres; while calcareous mudstone takes us down to a depth of around 77 metres. Mudstone with gypsum then goes down to around 200 metres and beyond that lies very big, strong gypsum layers of between three and five metres thickness.

“In this region, there’s a high stiffness and elasticity prior to the breaking of the cementitious bonds but, after that, it compresses easily. You have to make sure you don’t break the bonds.”

^^ Unfortunately, no chance at all. Impossible to say right now how long we'll have to wait for NHT to break ground . . . but I do hope to see this built one day. As MEGA-tall skyscrapers go, this is just too good to throw away and be forgotten about IMO.

I agree. Better go slow and complete it than not building it at all. Let's hope that someday we will see this monster T/O. :)
