A warm and friendly greeting derived from the Dabawenyo word "dayaw" that means good, valuable, superior or beautiful. Such is "Kadayawan," a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living.
Today, Kadayawan has metamorphosed into a festival of festivals, the mother of many other fesivals in the region as it honors Davao's heritage, its past personified by the ancestral "lumads", its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as they parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings bestowed on the city.
The festival began from a government-initiated program called “Unlad Proyekto Davao” in 1986, planned to unite the Davaoeños after the chaotic martial law years and to showcase the city as a peaceful and colorful place to visit and do business in. At the time, it was called “Apo Duwaling,”a name created from the icons Davao was famous for: Mt. Apo, the country's highest peak; durian, the king of fruits; and waling-waling. The queen of orchids. Davao is also home of the majestic Philippine eagle, the national bird. In 1988, the festival was renamed “Kadayawan sa Dabaw” by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to celebrate the city's unique wealth in flowers, fruits, and ethnic culture.
Today, Kadayawan has transformed into a festival of festivals, the mother of may other festivals in the region as it honors Davao’s artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral “lumads”, its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as they parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings granted on the city.
“Kadayawan sa Dabaw” is an enriching experience with a difference as its explores the past, present and future of the Davaoeños, the Mindanaoans, the Filipinos. Its sights and sounds remain supreme. Be part of the experience.

Surigaonons' way of thanksgiving for the bountiful blessings, this is event is marked by Mardi Gras-like celebrations. Dances are offerred in honor of the city's patron saint, Señor San Nicolas de Tolentino.
History of Bonok-Bonok
Surigao is home to the Mamanwa ethnic tribe. Their dances are showcased in a local festival called "Bonok-Bonok, held at the feast of San Nicolas de Toletino which is held annually on September 10. The Bonok-Bonok depicts the native folks' merry-making to show gratitude to pagan gods for bountiful harvest and good health.
Bonok-bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw is a Mardi gras-like celebration of dances, colors, bargains, and food.
One of the oldest and still existing tribes in the Philippines are the Mamanwas, who are quite similar to the Negritoes in physical profile. Although forced to settle in the hinterislands because of the advent of development, they still practiced, however, their customs and traditions. Among these is the belief about “KAHIMUNAN”, a tribal festivity, where music and graceful dancing are distinctive features. They chant and play accompanied with their instruments, such as: the gimbar (drum), the gong and the bamboo called the “kalatong” and “katik”. A “baylan” or priest officiates the celebration as a tribute to their God, “MAGBABAYA” and ancestors for good health and bountiful harvest intercessions.
During the “kahimunan” or tribal festivity, wild pigs, chicken and different fruits are offered to the ancestors. A thanksgiving dance called “BONOK-BONOK” is performed by the different village chieftains and babaeyons. Happiness and friendship are expressed through dancing, shouting and singing. They wave scarves of “BANAY” as signs of good will, prosperity and blessings for the entire tribal village.
Thus, Bonok-Bonok is a ritual dance which originated from these early settlers. The rhythm usually starts with a slow beat and gradually gets faster, causing the dancers to work at pace with the music. Adding to the attraction of the dance, is the colorful raiment, which includes beaded headdresses or tubaw, bracelets and anklets of the women. The ceremonial dress of the men and women are likewise ornate in design, and of various colors.
The dance ritual has been brought down through the generations and still being practiced today. In reverence to the Patron Saint San Nicolas de Tolentino, the people have already adopted the “Bonok –bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw” Festival which is a reflection of Surigao’s rich cultural heritage.

yeah but lets not look too much of commercialization side, lets focus on promoting the whole island as a tourist destination rather than a battle ground which is believed by many but fortunately not true naman. thus, to divert the attention of all those dirty minded people it's high time that we should have this kind of tourists attraction. let them experience our other side, let them hear our sounds, the beat and our colors.

oo nga, this will be totally a very big event. imagine a city hosting such number of contingents...... and each group will be composed of not less than 200 participants and just multiply that numbers to the number of cities that will participate... just imagine the impact of such event to the economy of the host city. gosh! i really hope somebody could make a better plan on this. this is really a big pogi points for the whole island. remember tourism industry is now one of the three biggest industry in the world. the other two is mining and agriculture.

Private sector wants bigger role in Kadayawan festival
By Rizalene P. Acac
THE Davao City Tourism Council is lobbying to the city government for the private sector to once again handle the Kadayawan Festival which will be staged four months from now.
Art Boncato, sales and marketing manager of the Marco Polo Hotel and a member of the council, said they have already met with Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to discuss the proposed transition from the government to the private sector.
The preparations of the festival, usually handled by the private sector, was transferred to the city government last year. The city government spearheaded the festival after Mayor Rodrigo Duterte noted that it has become highly-commercialized with telecommunication companies and television networks wrestling for exclusive sponsorship and coverage. Duterte said the organizers forgot that the indigenous roots of the city should be the highlight of the celebration.
The mayor also asked for the resignation of then City Tourism Officer Id Acaylar for including male contestants to the Hiyas ng Kadayawan which he said was deviation to the old concept. Last year, the contestants were representatives of various indigenous tribes, the first in the history of the city.
The budget of the festival was also reduced.
Boncato said they want the festival to be a more extravagant this year by making it at par with the Sinulog festival of Cebu. To do this, he said the tourism council recommended a strategy that would marry the cultural and business aspects of the festival.
He said Sinulog festival has not only been successful not only because it has a religious component but because the tourism sector and the government have been vigorous in promoting it abroad attracting foreign and domestic tourists.
Boncato said Kadayawan has more to offer than Sinulog because of the rich culture of Davao City so the gap is in the dissemination of information.
The statistics of the Department of Tourism XI revealed that the tourists to the city are still mostly local travelers. In 2006, a total of 569,235 visitors came to the city which grew to 641,161 or 13 percent last year.

Caracoles Samal Festival 2008
By Rogelio P. Antalan
Dateline Igacos
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/3832/16ba9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
ALL roads will lead to the Island Garden City of Samal this Saturday, April 26.
On this day, we will be celebrating Caracoles Samal Festival. Now on its fourth year, the event is beginning to be institutionalized as one of the most joyous and colorful celebrations in the Island City.
Caracoles, meaning "seashells," was first staged in Babak in 2005.
Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 11 Director Sonia Garcia wanted to come up with an a-la-mardi gras event to cap Dive the Gulf, a week-long diving event (mostly in Davao Gulf) that showcases Davao Gulf as the top diving destination in the country.
So, after brainstorming with some employees of the local government and the Igacos Tourism Council, Caracoles was conceptualized.
The name of the festival is appropriate since we have a lot of seashells in Samal. It symbolizes Samal's treasure trove of marine resources.
It is Igacos's vision to be a world-class tourist destination with more than the usual island sun, sand, and sea. Caracoles Samal brings out the pride of place of the community with its bedrock of social and cultural heritage converging.
The first Caracoles Samal was really phenomenal! With a whopping P1.7 million budget, mostly from sponsors, a capacious stage was built with high-tech lights and sounds system.
Video walls were put up all over the area and selling booths with marine-life motifs lined the roadside. There were a lot of participants to the various contests and scores of people, locales and tourists alike, filled the streets for the sundown to sunrise festivity. It was party all night.
All benefited from the event. Most if not all resorts and lodging inns were fully-booked. Habal-habal drivers said that with just a day's hard work of ferrying passengers from far-flung barangays to the poblacion (the event site) they took home a week's earnings. The bakeries that usually open 24 hours had to close by midnight because they ran out of bread to sell. Barbeque grillers tripled their income. Even the itinerant vendors amassed a fortune. Bars and the roadside booths were filled to the brim.
The next Caracoles Samal festivals were not as grandiose as the first, understandably because of lesser budgets. That's what's difficult when the first one is very successful, there will always be comparison.
This year, true to its original concept as a roving festival, Caracoles Samal 2008 will be staged in Peñaplata, Samal district. Even with a meager budget from the local government, DOT, and the private sector, Igacos Tourism Council chairperson Araceli Ayuste hopes that the celebration will be as successful as the first.
Caracoles Samal 2008 kicks off today, April 25, with open beach volleyball at the Samal Freedom Park and exhibits of tourist destinations and display of Island products at the Peñaplata Central Elementary School grounds.
The main event will be in April 26 with a parade of boats (Regatta) from Sta. Ana to Peñaplata wharf at 5:00 p.m. Upon arrival, countdown begins with yell breaks and street dancing to the festival site. This will be followed with a dance demonstration dubbed as Baile del Año where all group participants (numbering at least 30) will come dressed as marine creatures.
Creative minds will also be expressed through a costume contest (Estrella del Mar) where participants don a costume depicting a sea creature, even executing its appropriate gestures and movements. Added to that, there will also be a fashion show (Gloria Maris) on island wear.
A band concert simultaneous with street party will take center stage during Musicaracoles and this will be until sunrise. True Faith will be the guest band for this event.
All these activities simply show the world how grateful Samaleños are for the Igacos's bountiful, breathtaking, and spectacular resources.

Bansalan As Tourist Destination Kicks Off
by Henrylito D. Tacio
Bansalan -- the home town of broadcaster Jay Sonza, singer Jojo Adlawan (of London's "Miss Saigon" fame), Serapion Metilla (the country's foresmost expert on bonsai) -- has finally taken off as one of the country's tourist destination.
Last September 16, Wow Bansalan was launched by the municipal government to make the town as one of the areas to be visited by tourists -- both local and international -- in the province.
"Today is just the beginning," said Mayor Edwin G. Reyes during the launching of Wow Bansalan, the town's ambitious program of making Bansalan as part of Davao's del Sur tourist attractions.
To fully support the program, Mayor Reyes appointed Geraldine E. Batal, as the town tourism officer. She made the record as the very first person to hold the office since no one has been given such distinction since Bansalan became a town of its own fifty-five years ago.
The launching was part of the 55th Anniversary of Bansalan. The town was used to be a barangay of Santa Cruz. When Digos became a town, Bansalan was one of those areas included. Then in 1952, Bansalan was separated from Digos.
"Fifty-five years ago, we won our independence as municipal corporate community," Mayor Reyes said. "We cut our umbilical cord from our mother town, signifying a dream come. Out deep aspiration to be free from ignoble state of dependency was realized."
As part of the 55th Anniversary Celebration -- called Bansaulog (from the words Bansalan and "saulog," the local term for celebration) -- two back-to-back parades and contests were held.
On September 16, a parade was done, which culminated at the municipal hall. During the program, Salinta Monon -- touted to be the "last Bagobo weaver" and a National Manlilikha awardee -- was honored by the municipal government. "She's known in other parts of the country and even in other nations, but most of us don't know her," said Loreto A.
Valdez, who headed the municipal socio-cultural and historical council.

The life and culture of the indigenous peoples have always been linked to the land. Since time immemorial, Davao has been the homeland of the Indigenous Peoples and land has become the core of their existence. If their land is lost, so is their culture and traditions. Thus, there is a need to defend the indigenous peoples’ ancestral lands for them to continually live and practice their way of life- consulting the spirits, working with nature and sharing with others. This is the main reason of celebrating the Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2008.
The Indigenous Peoples of Davao and Mindanao have become a very important mix of the island’s cultural panorama. Without them, a part of what makes sense to the island’s identity and pride is lost. Thus, the Kadayawan sa Dabaw pays tribute to Davao and Mindanao’s indigenous communities by making them as the main focus of the celebration. Kadayawan sa Dabaw is indeed the indigenous peoples thanksgiving of their harvests and an affirmation of their tribal sense as a self-determined people. Migrant settlers who have made Davao and Mindanao their home celebrate with them.
This year’s celebration has two main components:
Lumadnong Kasaulogan (Indigenous Peoples Festival) -- that is the core of the Kadayawan Festival showcasing our indigenous peoples’ culture and arts; and
Subay sa Lumadnong Kagikan (Contemporary Indigenous-motivated Celebrations) -- showcasing the impact of the indigenous culture and traditions to contemporary artists and communities.
Our theme for this year is: "Musanay Lumadnong Kagikan, Yutang Kabilin Panalipdan!" (“Flourishing Indigenous Heritage, Protecting Ancestral Nations”)

By E.O. Fuentes
In August every year Dabawenyos and tourists from other parts of the world take time to visit Davao to join their festival of thanksgiving for the land's bountiful harvest of fruits and flowers. This festival is called "Kadayawan," an expression in Dabawnon tongue which stands for anything excellent that brings good fortune. (Tesorero, Bert 1996).
This year the "Kadayawan" celebration is scheduled from August 17 to 24, but its agro-industrial trade fair will open earlier. Among the Dabanons, Kadayawan signifies thanksgiving for the bountiful gifts from Davao's fertile land, forests, rivers and seas. "The significance of the Kadayawan festival is that it is a cultural community festival of thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest of fruits and flowers which features the customs and traditions of the Bagobo tribe of davao," according to Datu Max Gabao.
The precursor of the present festival is the "Apo Duwaling" organized in 1986, until it was change to "Kadaywan" in 1988. The festival is on its 17th year, although in the 70's then Mayor Elias B. Lopez organized similar tribal festivals at the PTA grounds. Blessed by a well-balanced climate and vast fertile valleys fringed by high mountains shielding the land against the ravages of destructive typhoons, Davao is best for agriculture, enriched by evenly distributed rainfall. The land grows a variety of trees, many of them yielding exotic fruits and exquisite orchids of rare beauty the whole year round.
Davao blooms as glowingly as ever these days, summoning all its good spirits to assist in the celebration of its "Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival." The thanksgiving is not only for the bounty of its land but also pays tribute to the Dabawenyos ways, talents and zest of living. Since the first celebration in 1986, the city has become a generous host to tourists and friends who come to Davao to witness not only this ethnic influenced celebration but also come close to Davao icons which before their coming were merely figments in their imagination. Today, many come to Davao to see for themselves the exquisite beauty of Davao orchids, or try the hellish smelling but heavenly tasting durian. Despite the fact that durian is found elsewhere in Mindanao the fruit is closely identified with Davao. Waling waling is also linked with Davao and rightly so. This orchid is endemic to Davao's Mt. Apo foothills. And this legendary mountain, now the source of geothermal energy that proliferates Mt. Apo, the highest peak in the country (10,311 feet) is also a Davao symbol which we see in post-cards and T-shirt designs. In the still remaining rainforests of Mt. Apo inhabits the Philippine Eagle, our national bird, which is also identified with Davao. This icon of Davao is now a captive of man's rapacity.
The rainforest of Mt. Apo, considered the last bulwark of the eagles are almost gone and so the remaining birds tale flight to remaining thicker and wider forests of Mindanao. Some 14 birds live in captivity at the Malagos Eagle Center, in Baguio district, a 40 minutes ride west of Davao City proper.Today, whenever the Philippine eagle is mentioned, subconsciously we associate the bird with Davao.
Mt. Apo, the Philippine Eagle, the Durian, the Waling Waling (Vanda Sanderana): these are icons that have been identified with Davao. And the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival will once again project these icons to the public.

tj_brewed May 24th, 2008, 03:01 AM HISTORY OF THE KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL
Piles of various farming instruments, from knives to bolos to sticks used to till the soil, harvest fruits and gather flowers. Baskets of fruits, trays of colorful native orchids, rice and corn grains, fruits and vegetables were religiously displayed on mats. A familiar scene on the village squares of old Dabaw, all these in thanksgiving to the Almighty for the year's bountiful harvest.
This ritual of Pahinongod is still practiced by modern Davaoeños. Thus, the Kadayawan.
In the seventies, Mayor Elias B. Lopez, a Bagobo, initiated tribal festivals in the Poblacion. Representatives of the Bagobos (Tagabawa, Guiangan, Clata, and Ata), the Manobos, Mansakas and the Mandayas, the Muslims and others, gather to the lowland to perform dances and rituals of thanksgiving. The performances take the city folks and tourists to the richness and deeply ingrained cultural rituals of the natives.
Come early eighties, with the national peace and order unrest, this tribal festival was restrained only to be revived in 1986 as the "Apo Duwaling" festival. The institutionalized festival aims to promote Davao City as a peaceful and orderly city despite the unrest.
"Apo Duwaling", is a word coined from Mt. Apo, durian and waling-waling, all icons of Davao's natural wealth. The first Apo Duwaling organized the Agro-Industrial Trade Fair, showcasing Davao orchids, flowers, fruits and other local agricultural products.
In 1988, "Apo Duwaling” was renamed "Kadayawan", a Dabawnon expression for anything that is excellent and that brings great fortune. It is derived from the aboriginal word "dayao" which means good or "madayaw", things that are of great value or is profitable, superior or beneficial.
Today, Kadayawan best describes the festival that reflects the ethnicity and nativeness of the celebration. The Kadayawan also recognized the Dabawenyo's artistry in visual and literary arts.
In 1995, the Mindanao Federation of Cutflowers and Plant growers, Inc, (MINFED) spearheaded the 10th Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival. MINFED envisioned the growth of the flower and fruit industry. It has evolved the countryside to generate an improved livelihood.
The 11th Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival focused on promoting the city as a tourist destination. Also, as the front door and gateway to the Philippines - Indonesia - Malaysia and Brunei Darusallam - East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).
Introduced in 1995 as a major Kadayawan event is the Floral Float parade. Now a tourist attraction, it parades intricately designed floats, decked with orchids, flowers and ornamentals, also loaded with Davao fruits - durian, bananas, pomelos, mangoes, papaya and other vegetables.
The Floral Float parade has developed into a signature of Kadayawan festival showcasing the city as a "City in Bloom", Davao's official tag line since 1996.
Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan or street dancing is one of the attractions of the festival. Performers in ethnic costumes graces the streets in an uproar of body movement and ethnic music, enticing spectators to join the dancing in the streets.
Such thanksgiving is symbolized by the rigorously prepared Floral Float Parade, Indak-indak sa kadalanan and more… These are not just show-offs but the preparation are done with delicacy, sacrifice with joy, All just to show how proud we are of the many blessings we receive and would like to share not only to Filipinos but foreigners as well.

by Ian Ray Garcia
The Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2008 is now inviting dance groups of students, out-of-school youth and community-based performers in Mindanao for this year’s Sayaw Mindanaw, the Mindanao indigenous-based dance festival. Sayaw Mindanaw is a Mindanao dance competition of theatrical tribal suites of dance and music depicting Mindanao Indigenous epics, folklores and traditions
There are two (2) categories in the competition: Open Category (for adults and youth dance groups with performers who are above twelve years old or if in school are first year high school and above), and Children Category (exclusively for children aged 7 to 12 years old or if in school the equivalent of Grade 1 to Grade 6). The minimum number of performers per entry including musicians is ten (10) while the maximum is thirty (30).

Entries should be any legend, folk story, cultural practice or a documentary of important socio-cultural and even political event of an indigenous community utilizing the tribe’s in-focus indigenous movement and music in its purest form or reinterpreted version provided its reinterpretation do not lose the essence of the particularity of the tribe being represented.
Musical accompaniment should be live by performers who will form part of the required number of performers. For Children category, only two (2) adult performers will be allowed to accompany the music pool. The use of synthesizers and other electronic instruments is not allowed. Solo performances will be allowed provided these shall be interspersed in the dance medley and will not exceed one third (1/3) of the time of the entire presentation. Maximum time limit of each presentation is eight (8) minutes. All participating groups are required to submit to the committee the specific dimensions of the props and sets that they will use.
The use of fire, fire crackers, smoke grenade, party poppers, live animals and killing of live animals are not allowed. Groups who will use these for special effects or for any other reason will be automatically disqualified.

by Prix D Banzon
PIA
Davao City (30 May) -- The Kadayawan Festival of Davao City this August will be a celebration of abundance.
Art Boncato, chair of the committee on publicity and media of the Kadayawan festivities this year during the Club 888 Forum of the Marco Polo Hotel on Wednesday stressed that as Davao celebrates its bounty there is a need to value the earth, the land, the natural resources and harvest.
He said it will be a grand celebration but will not commercialize the event saying that it is quite challenging but the tourism sector expresses interest in the Kadayawan Festival.
He explained that their objective is to bring in more guests and the event is open to everyone and to tourists both domestic and international.
The festival is a celebration for the Dabawenyos but holding it will not also block people people from other places to celebrate with us, he said.
According to Boncato, the tourism players especially the airline and hotel industries already made some offerings by reducing the rates and many already had availed of the zero ticket offered by airline companies.
He said the celebration is also to promote Davao City all over and direct flights are already open to other countries like HongKong and Singapore of which we have to take advantage of this.
"Many are looking at the market and still they do not know what to do about the access," he said.
He said now that the access is offered to us then we have to support it.
Boncato also said that during the festivities, the airport will be among their concern where collaterals will be supplied at the terminals.
He further said that they plan to put up billboards in 13 airports nationwide in key cities of the Philippines about Kadayawan Festival where Mayor Rodrigo Duterte endorses the festivities and invite tourists to celebrate with the Dabawenyos in a city that is a must see destination of the country.
"The plans are being finalized and if they get the approval then the billboards will speak of Davao City and the Kadayawan Festival," he said. (PIA)

henji May 31st, 2008, 02:43 AM Kadayawan Fest organizers aim to raise P20-M in sponsorships
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (31 May) -- The organizers of the 2008 Kadayawan Festival of Davao City is aiming a fund sponsorship of P20 million to finance series of events for the weeklong festivities.
But committee chair Art Boncato of media and publicity committee of the festival said they are also aiming for a surplus so the remaining funds could help the City Tourism Office in financing events and activities that they could participate to promote Davao City at the national and international gatherings.
He said the Davao City government regularly allocates P700,000 for the conduct of the celebration but getting companies to sponsor the event will tremendously help in the putting up of a more festive, exciting and colorful celebration.
He said they are holding a dinner in Manila with 50 chief executive officers of mostly multi-national companies doing good business in Davao City.
Boncato said they will also be briefed about the importance of Kadayawan Festival of which these companies get attracted to sponsor.
"We bring in the CEOs and other officers of major companies doing business in Davao City in a dinner where Mayor Duterte is attending," he said.
He said there will also be entertainment with leading artists like Joey Ayala as well as show of designers exhibiting various clothes from Mindanao.
"We need to appeal to their senses and let them understand the importance of the Festival which is full of excitement," he said.
Boncato meanwhile said there will be several events and this will be highlighted with the participation of the ten tribes of the city.
Along with that he said the Rizal Park will be the site of mini tribal villages where they will showcase the unique culture of indigenous people.
He said tribal cuisine will also be presented but the presentation will be done in such a way that it will be appealing to our guests.
"Showing out guests the culture and tradition of our IPs will give them and even the Dabawenyos a deeper understanding of our indigenous people," he said.
Boncato who is also the sales and marketing manager of Marco Polo Hotel Davao said that they will also create events that would depict the celebration of Kadayawan Festival.
He said their guests will have a good vintage view because the dance showdown and other cultural presentation will be held at the park just across the hotel. (PIA) [top]

Kadayawan 75-day countdown starts
Sunstar Davao
THE start of the 75-day countdown to Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2008 kicked off Wednesday night at Casino Filipino's Lantawan Hall.
Angel Puentespina, Davao Tourism Association (Data) president and Kadayawan co-chair for the private sector, led the launch hosted by Davao City Tourism officer Giovanni "Bong" Aportadera.
Members of the Kadayawan executive committee and deputy mayors of Davao City's indigenous and Muslim tribes were also present.
The new Kadayawan sa Dabaw logo and the accompanying promotional video that will be played in the airport, terminals, and hubs were presented.
The Kadayawan committee also revamped and invigorated the Kadayawan website, www.kadayawan.com, for this year.
Themed "Musanay Lumadnong Kagikan, Yutang Kabilin Panalipdan!" (Flourishing Indigenous Heritage, Protecting Ancestral Nations), this year's celebration has two main components: Lumadnong Kasaulogan (Indigenous Peoples Festival) -- showcasing indigenous peoples' culture and arts; and Subay sa Lumadnong Kagikan (Contemporary Indigenous-motivated Celebrations) -- showcasing the impact of indigenous culture and traditions on contemporary artists and communities.
Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2008 will run from August 18 to August 24. (GLP)

CTO hails private sector support to Kadayawan '08
THE officer of the Davao City Tourism Office commended the private sector in Davao City for stepping up its effort in supporting the celebration of the Kadayawan Festival in August this year.
In Wednesday's edition of the Club 888 press forum at the Marco Polo Davao, Bong Aportadera, CTO officer-in-charge, said the private sector is giving its full support for a more extravagant Kadayawan celebration this year.
Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo
"We claim that last year's Kadayawan was successful, data from the Department of Tourism (DOT) showed half a million of tourists visited the city during the period. We can give you the assurance that we can deliver the same intensity this year," he said.
He added: "When tough times come, we can really see who are those we can depend on, and we are glad that we have the private sector who is equally enthusiastic to deliver a better festival this year."
Aportadera said this year's staging of Kadayawan has a total budget of P15.7 million, as proposed by various committees of the festival.
He said P700,000 of the amount will be appropriated by the City Government.
Aportadera further said that this year, the private sector is more enthusiastic compared the previous year.
"They give what they feel is needed for Kadayawan," he said adding, that among the office's partners for Kadayawan are the big telecommunication companies in the city, and those which are engaged in consumers production.
Aportadera said the five major highlights of the festival are the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan, Floral Float Parade, Hiyas ng Kadayawan, Kaan Dawet, which will showcase the different flavors of Davao, and the Kaan Mindanao, which will highlight the indigenous people of Davao. (JGRS)

2008 Kadayawan Festival focuses on IPs
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (28 June) -- The indigenous people of Davao City will be the focus of the 2008 Kadayawan Festival but their participation will not just end in the parade because the city government is working on a sustaining various program for them.
Davao City Tourism Operations Office officer-in-charge Giovanni Aportadera said the the IPs play an important role in promoting the festivities as the ten deputy mayors represented by the 10 tribes here were the focus of the first marketing ads regarding the Kadayawan Festival.
But Aportadera said that before they were involved in the promo campaign these leaders were first consulted and it was explained to them the importance of their participation. He said they are the ideal persons to talk about the culture of Davao and promote the diverse tradition that the IPs has been practicing up to this time.
The first cut of the promo campaign already got the nod of the airline industry namely Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines. The video ads will be shown inside the aircraft and their outlets and in airport terminals.
Aportadera said PAL will show the video materials in all their flights both domestic and international. He said Filipino travel agents that are based abroad also agreed to show the material in their respective outlets in their offices particularly in Europe.
During the festival there will be a "Kaan Mindanao" where different tribal groups will showcase their food and how it is being prepared. But this also needs careful coordination because these groups are used to environment in natural setting that is why they had to select the appropriate place for them to execute their respective food preparation and exposition, he said.
The earlier plan to hold it at the Rizal Park will no longer be carried, he said. Aportadera meanwhile said that as far as the tourism programs of their office is concerned, a big chunk of it will go to the IPs.
"We are conceptualizing sustainable programs and engage them in activities that would help them and their community through tourism base services," he said.
He said they want to emphasize that tourism is also about natural resources and the environment and their office is trying to come up with activities that would promote what is basic. During the holding of the Kadayawan Festival here he said major activities will still be held like the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan (street dancing), Pamulak (floral float parade), World Music Festival, the Kaan Mindanao, Kaan Dawit, Pasasalamat ni Mayor. (PIA) [top]
Peng Hok July 10th, 2008, 08:10 AM I was able to attend a media forum this morning sponsored by the City Information Office where the plans for Kadayawan 2008 were partly discussed.
Perhaps aware of the not-so-good turn out of last year's festivities, the organizers decided to re-admit indak-indak participants who are not from Davao (Ms. Patmei Ruivivar even mentioned that a contingent from Iloilo that will represent the Dinagyang Festival has signed up to participate). However, in order not to divert the center of the theme from Davao's indegenous peoples, the indak-indak entries have been divided into two categories, to wit: Davao Category and Open Category. Participants under the Davao Category are those who are based in Davao and who depict the indegenous peoples of the Davao Region, while participants other than those who should be included in the Davao Category are placed under the Open Category. The top three placers under the Davao Category shall then compete with the other contingents under the Open Category. Thus, participants under the Davao Category have the opportunity to win twice.
During the Kadayawan Week (August 16-24, 2008), the Osmena Park will be converted into an Indegenous Village where indegenous peoples will set up houses and depict their day to day lives. (I would have wanted to suggest to make this a permanent attraction in the City :D). Meanwhile, the Rizal Park will be converted into a Food and Trade Pavilion where various indegenous delicacies and handicraft will be displayed and sold.
All these the City Government of Davao is doing to gradually showcase Davao as the Culture Capital of the Philippines. Rightfully so. :)

A friend of mine (Davaoeña) who is now based in Bangkok told me in our last conversation that the drive about making Davao THE Cultural Centre of the Country has been given much impetus both by the private and public sectors. That was the info she got in her visit to the city a couple of months back. :)
Peng Hok July 10th, 2008, 09:08 AM ^^
That is actually the direction right now. Both the public and private sectors are upbeat about the idea. And rightfully so. Davao would not have been known as the melting pot of cultures for nothing. :)
davaoeagle July 10th, 2008, 09:41 AM ^^
I completely concur with the idea Darry. To tell you the truth, I was so excited when both sectors built the cultural villages around the city because for me, this act would redound to a strengthened campaign of making Davao a real cultural centre of the country.

Climate affects durian production
By Mai Gevera
Davao City (12 July) -- Davao Durian growers are all surprised with the early growing and harvest season of the durian fruit.
Before, the region is flooded with durian starting August until October. But now, growers need to harvest as early as July and they estimated that the fruit supply would dwindle and run out by August.
This has pushed the Regional Tourism Council head by its chairperson Alma Uy to move the Durian Festival initiated by the City of Tagum on a much earlier date.
"Instead of August, we will celebrate the festival on July 18 when the production of the durian fruit is at its highest," she said during the Kapihan sa Kapitolyo, Thursday.
Uy came up with the decision after checking the durian plantations in Davao del Norte and most of the growers suggested to move the festival earlier so the public can see and eat more durian fruits.
The growers also attributed the sudden change of the Durian harvest season to climate change.
"We can no longer understand the climate. Sometimes we get too much heat and then suddenly we experience consecutive rains," said Uy.
This has also made the growers to mark up the price of the durian fruit. Instead of P50 per kilo, most growers are now selling it at P60.
Uy, who is a grower herself, admitted that durian growers deserve to hike the durian price since their production has significantly decreased due to various factors.
One factor mentioned is the climate change and the other one is the increasing price of fertilizers. (PIA) [top]

dinabaw July 15th, 2008, 03:16 AM Crisis won’t keep Kadayawan
from being grand: Aportadera
The economic crisis will not keep the city government from making the upcoming Kadayawan celebration grand and memorable.
In an interview, city tourism operations officer Rizal Giovanni Aportadera said the expenses will be shouldered hand-in-hand with the private sector which committed to raise more than P14 million.
He said the latest update showed that a total of P6 million has already been raised.
Aportadera said the regular appropriation of the city government has always been P700,000 which will mostly go to the big events like the Indak-indak sa Kadalanan and the Floral Float Parade. He said the celebration has an over-all budget of P15 million.
Aportadera said despite the crunch, the Kadayawan finance committee has refused to grant exclusive sponsorships even if it would amount to millions of pesos.
He said this is because exclusive sponsorships have created chaos in previous celebrations.
He said telecommunications companies Globe and Smart have decided to agree on which particular events they will each be supporting.
Aportadera said there is a separate committee that will be monitoring the collaterals and ensure that the celebration will not become too commercialized. Overly commercialized concepts of the celebration prompted Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to make drastic changes two years ago.
Festival chair Ricky Vilar said cost-cutting measures will be imposed on some events and even in the committee level so that the prizes will not be affected.
He said the Davao River Festival, for example, will only have a non-motorized banca competition He said this will entice more people to join since it will not entail too much cost.
Vilar said expenses for decorations will be lessened by using indigenous materials.
“According to the ways and means committee, the prizes will not be lowered because this will serve as a come-on. The adjustments will be on the working committee,” he said.
The Indak-indak sa Kadalanan, which has the biggest budget in the festival, will give P300,000 as first prize in the Open Category and P100,000 each for the top-three winners in the Davao City-based Category.

Davao City — The Kadayawan Festival of Davao City this August will be a celebration of abundance.
“Many are looking at the market and still they do not know what to do about the access,” he said.
“The plans are being finalized and if they get the approval then the billboards will speak of Davao City and the Kadayawan Festival,” he said.

for Kadayawan festival
BY MAYA M. PADILLO
In an effort to strengthen the hype for Kadayawan 2008 Festival, members of the media as well as information agencies in both local and national levels committed themselves to get involved in promoting the celebration.
The commitment was given during a consultation meeting initiated by Art Boncato of the Kadayawan Executive Committee at The Marco Polo, Davao yesterday.
Media representatives pledged to continue the support they have been giving to the festival for many years now by providing space and airtime for Kadayawan events.
According to Boncato, building up the publicity is one of the committee’s devices to ensure the success of the festivity.
This year’s festivity will features many innovations, including having two major festivals: the Indigenous Peoples Festival and the Contemporary Indigenous-Motivated celebration.
There will also be a new concept for the floral float parade competition, and this year’s celebration will feature Moda Mindanao which aims to promote fresh and new designers.
Also in the lineup are the launching of the first photo book in full color by the Davao Camera Club (DCC) and the first-ever walking tour in which locals and tourists will walk around the city visiting some of the festivity attractions, from Museo Dabawenyo to Osmeña Park to People’s Park.

Feature: Most competitive city hosts most competitive festival
by Romy Sabaldan
Davao City (18 July) -- Kadayawan the most competitive festival and Davao the most competitive city is the next celebrated "lethal combination" since Manny Pacquaio and David Diaz.
Fresh from a jubilant celebration last month from the sensational win of its most popular adopted Dabawenyo and new WBC Lightweight boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, Davao City goes on to celebrate one of its most festive celebrations barely a month from now.
This momentous month of August 2008 comes at a time after the city got another feather in its cap as the country's most competitive city this year, according to a study conducted by the prestigious Asian Institute of Management (AIM).
Davao City, again took the honors of being the most competitive city getting the highest marks in such domain as sea and air travel infrastructures and the low cost of doing business.
The comprehensive study accorded Davao City top spots in terms of its readiness as a major business and tourist destinations owning two major ports of entry, the Sasa seaport and the Davao International Airport.
Both international and national port of entries are easily accessible in a short travel time from the major commercial and trading hub of downtown Davao and the adjoining cities and provinces.
According to major business and tourism players in Davao and the adjoining regions, this is all about competition after all.
Competition in business statistics and services for all the participating cities to learn from the "Best Practices" of their neighbors, said Christine Omar of the Ateneo de Davao Center for business Research and Extension, official Academic Partner of the AIM comprehensive studies.
In another area of competition, Davao City is again host of this year's Kadayawan 2008 which had already sounded the invitation for participation and see for yourselves the greatness of the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan, Floral Float Parade, the equally colorful Fluvial Float Parade and a dozen other major attractions of the August 17 - 24, 2008 festivities.
Already, the 23rd Kadayawan Festival offers close to P1-M pesos in cash prizes this year for a total of 15 contingents from Davao City and 17 out-of-town participants from as far as the indigenous Parang and Sharif Aguak of Maguindanao and other provinces and cities vying for the coveted prizes in the street Indak-Indak (stomp-your-feet) colorful native dances. oradude23 July 22nd, 2008, 12:24 AM SM City to mark 50th year during Kadayawan Festival
SM CITY Davao is all set for a grand Kadayawan participation this August.
"We will have a greater participation as this year is also our 50th year anniversary, and it is our way of showing our appreciation for the support of Dabawenyos," Debby Go, mall manager of SM City Davao, said in Monday's Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao's Cafe Rysus.
SM City Davao is a diamond sponsor of the Kadayawan Festival.
Amid the present economic situation being experienced in the country, Go said they are still confident that the festival this year will be successful as SM City Davao brings in trade fairs, fashion shows, exhibits, and mall-wide sales.
For the whole month of August, according to John Maynard Gan, the new brand manager of Tuesday, July 22, 2008the mall has been fully booked with various events that will compliment the month-long festival. .
Kicking off the celebration will be the Agro-Industrial Trade Fair, which will be at the back portion of SM City Davao, together with an ikebana exhibit at the events center of the mall.
This will be followed by the Kaniyogan Festival, in coordination with the Philippine Coconut Authority, which will start on August 13.
The whole week of August 18 to 24 is the much-anticipated mall-wide sale.
During the same period, SM City Davao will also be providing their customers a glimpse of the festival by bringing in their own version of Indak-Indak within the mall compound.
Other events at SM City Davao include the Mindanao Culinary Demo, Sayaw Mindanao, Moda Mindanao, a concert of Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Fashion Edge. (CPM)

Kadayawan Festival a boon to business establishments
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (23 July) -- Many business establishments in Davao City are looking forward to the holding of Kadayawan Festival as an event that draws more traffic to the city thus renewing their support to the holding of the festivities.
During the Kapehan sa Dabaw held Monday at Café Rysus of SM City, Debby A. Go, mall manager of SM City Davao acknowledged that the Kadayawan really made the city atmosphere very festive and noticed that more provincial visitors and those from other neighboring areas timed their shopping during this kind of event.
Go said that they maintain their Diamond Sponsorship with the Kadayawan Festival and they support the Davao City government and private sector that runs the festival even as she said that they are also supporting programs and projects that benefits the people of Davao.
She said even if their traffic is heaviest during December, they consider other events in Davao City as equally important especially the Kadayawan Festival.
SM group brand manager Russel D. Alaba on the other hand said they are happy to report that SM Davao is among the top performers of the SM malls in the country and that the Davao City mall is doing well.
"We are bullish about the happenings in Davao," he said.
Go meanwhile said that they remain optimistic that they could meet their target despite the economic crunch and knowing that they are still into the first six months of operation although she said that their performance from January to June this year is higher compared to the same period in 2007.
Go said there is slow movement for items considered by shoppers as luxurious and remain strong on basic items and food making their Supermarket as a strong anchor. The RTWs also is performing well, she said.
With the entry of new malls in Davao City, Go said SM maintains and strengthens its affiliates even as she said that they will bring in stronger brands and stronger labels.
Alaba on the other hand said their efforts are focus in coming up with specific marketing plan that has global appeal just like in the Supermarket where they dedicated an area for Asian products because of the increase in the number of foreign shoppers like the Koreans.
Meanwhile, he said other than the lined up events for Kadayawan, SM Davao will run the Kadayawan Fashion Edge which is inspired by the recent season of fashion week at SMX where three Davao designers participated in the event highlighting their creation.
He vowed that they will make the Kadayawan Festival event at SM City Davao a notch higher as they will run a month-long activities in support for the August festival. (PIA) [top]

i wish this will be aired in abs or gma
BYAHILO July 29th, 2008, 02:56 AM ^^normally abs cbn has its own tv ad being shown here in manila. they have been airing festival ads here kahit walang national coverage. they did that do kalilangan, dinagyang, sinulog, pamulinawen, panagbenga. so i wont be surprised if ill be seeing this kind of ad soon.
davaob4now July 29th, 2008, 10:53 AM talaga? i thought sa abs cbn davao or mindanao wide lang ito ma e air if ma e air....thanks by the way @biyahilo.
BYAHILO July 29th, 2008, 03:41 PM so far ala pa ako nakikitang new festival ad. but very likely theyll do it again. usually mga 15-30sec ad spots lang. last time nga may isang festival silang naka ad na.. kahit ako nagulat kasi di ko familiar ang event.
davaob4now July 29th, 2008, 04:31 PM is kadayawan festival very familiar there in manila?
BYAHILO July 30th, 2008, 04:18 AM i guess so. many have already heard about it. peo not as familiar as sinulog or masskara maybe.
though when you say "kadayawan" here, people can easily connect it with dvo.
davaob4now July 30th, 2008, 08:30 AM ^^
yeah...ilang beses kasing napalitan ang name ng festival dito sa davao, before naging kadayawan festival talaga ang name...pero i tell you, for me this festival is the most colourful festival of all...at grabe ang saya...kaya nga tinatawag itong "Festival of Festivals"...
madami din ang nagkakamali, kahit taga davao, kasi dalawa ang malaking festival sa davao, Araw ng Davao at Kadayawan...minsan ang kadayawan npagkamalang Araw ng Davao minsa naman the other way around...
dinabaw July 30th, 2008, 08:34 AM ^^ only onced it was Apo Duwaling before btw pertaining the ABS-CBN Kadayawan coverage it was the first to show lived nationwide & TFC( The Filipino Channel) .AFAIK
davaob4now July 30th, 2008, 08:43 AM ^^
teka nalelebog na pud ko...i thought naging durian festival siya tapos naging waling waling tapos kadayawan na...
yes, i still remember it, full coverage ang ginawa ng studio 23 tapos yung jingle na feature pa sa opening ng ASAP...it was also aired sa TFC through Pinoy Central TV...sana more tourists ngayon...

pero id be very glad kung makita nako na may ads ang kadayawan sa tv. para daghan magka interes mu-adto sa davao sa aug.
dinabaw July 30th, 2008, 03:34 PM ^^ bakit september? :D i think Tourism director Sonya Garcia gave a clip to ABS-CBN and i heard from Bong Aportadera( City Tourism head) they will put ads on airports around the country dunno if it's already installed .
yup Tagum currently running the Durian Festival right now , mas maaga kasi maaga ding nag si bungahan ang mga durian .
henji July 30th, 2008, 04:12 PM diba we own the monicker "home of the King of Philippine Fruits"? bakit napunta sa Tagum ang Durian Festival? No offense sa atong lil bro city Tagum pero Ive heard from ABS news, na Tagum is still looking for a nice moniker which will represent Tagum.. diba "Music Capital of Mindanao", then later they coined "palm capital of mindanao" pero i dunno what they retained.
and Durian is synonymous to Davao, alongside mangosteen and sweet pomelo.
dinabaw July 30th, 2008, 04:14 PM ^^ di kasi natin pinatuloy hehe bitw i guess they also deserved to have a Durian Festival ,well i guess we can have 2 Durian Festivals ,wadda ya think :D

Ive heard of a Durian Festival in Davao before too....kaso, we didnt fully support it. And in Tagum, todo ang suporta nila sa Durian Festival i guess. Kaya ayun, naghit sya!
Tagum is trying to be the Durian Capital of Davao Region.

BYAHILO July 31st, 2008, 01:45 PM AKAIK inasal is a ilonggo/visayan term for grilled, sugba, or barbecque... and since time immemorial, the term inasal has always been associated with the ilonggos especially bacolod and the process of grilling chicken.
though, it is an undeniable fact that there are also other varieties of food that can be asalled. ie, pork, or fish,

34 schools, firms set to join culinary fest
TWENTY-two schools and 12 establishments from all over Mindanao have already confirmed their participation in this year's Kadayawan Mindanao Culinary Festival (MCF).
Slated on August 18 to 21, the event is the biggest and the most prestigious culinary event in Mindanao.
Ruby Ochoa, of the Konkordans, the organizer of the event, said in Wednesday's edition of the Club 888 press forum at the Marco Polo Davao that the school participants came from General Santos City, Midsayap, Panabo City, Davao City and other areas in Mindanao.
"There are also at least 12 establishments that have already registered," Ochoa said, adding that the number of participants is only for the Kadayawan MCF.
"We expect that the number of school participants will reach to 30 and more than 20 for the establishments," Ochoa said.
Mary Ann Montemayor, managing director of the Konkordans also said the MFC this year will have two parts.
The first part, she said, will be the eliminations during the Kadayawan Festival, while the second part will be the summit.
The MCF Summit will highlight seminars, demos, valuable learning sessions and trainings to be conducted by experts from Manila.
"This year's MCF theme is 'Indigenous Flavors, Global Tastes'. The bigger challenge to the theme is learning on how to position our indigenous foods in the global market," she added.
Montemayor said Mindanao has so much to brag about in terms of culinary. Last year, she said they were able to elevate durian not just an ordinary fruit, but they were able to introduce it as main course, salad, and soup.
"We cannot promote destination without promoting our food. MCF is also a venue where we can encourage our SMEs to really continue to go into food business," Montemayor said.
MCF is initiated by the Davao Tourism Association (Data). (JGRS)

In my view grilled food is Sinugba in cebuano as sugba in "sutukil" and not inasal... the latter generally means lechon IMHO lang pero in other dialects di ko na alam. Pero any third opinion is welcome... help!

strides in search for native menus
By Manuel T. Cayon
Reporter
DAVAO CITY— Culinary enthusiasts would display anew the strides they made in the search for the Davao, even Mindanao, brand of culinary preparations timed with the celebration of the Kadayawan fruit-harvest festival here late this month.
Organizers of the 7th Mindanao Culinary Festival (MCF) 2008 Summit said the culinary festival would “allow us a peek of what has resulted so far in the researches and the experimentations in local culinary.”
The summit is the biggest and most prestigious culinary event in Mindanao.
The MCF has become a search for the use of local and native spices to come up with food and culinary preparations that would become truly Davao- or Mindanao-trademarked menus.
Only a few years earlier, the festival also turned into a showcase of different styles and presentations of menus and preparations with durian and tuna as the base ingredients.
Durian has become an emblem of Davao City, although the fruit’s various varieties were being grown in some Asian countries such as Thailand.
The yellow-fin tuna, on the other hand, has been associated also with the cities of Davao and General Santos, which both maintain fishport complexes to accommodate mainly the tuna landings caught in Mindanao’s southern seas down to the borders of the Indonesian waters.
“We would witness in this festival the inputting of native spices as our chefs continue to discover what we have here in Mindanao,” said Mary Ann Montemayor, one of the organizers of the Kadayawan Festival and the chairman of the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga) Tourism Council.
The Kadayawan would be held from August 18 to 24.
She said the short number of years that the Kadayawan Festival has instituted the MCF as one of the minicelebrations, “our chefs and cooks have already wrote or formulated their own cookbooks of ingredients that are also being used in many establishments in and around Mindanao.”
“It’s usually the timpla-timpla lang until the right mix is found,” she said.
“It’s just the search and the promotion of preparations and packaging them as the Davao brand,” said Art Boncato, former president of the Davao Tourism Association.
This year the MCF Summit would be conducted in two main courses. The first would be the eliminations for selected competitions during the Kadayawan Festival and participated in by several schools and establishments.
The second course would be held outside of the Kadayawan festivities, from September 25 to 27, at the MCF’s new home, at The Venue, “with a grand buffet of valuable lectures, seminars, workshops, demonstrations and competitions.”
The Kadayawan MCF eleminations would be as follows: August 18—Table-setting (professional and student category) and Table Skirting (Student category) at the SM Event Center; August 19—Nestlé Market Basket for Students at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies; August 20—Centerpiece Arrangement (Professional/Student) and Fruit/Vegetable Carving (Professional/Student) at the House of Indonesia; and August 21—UFS 35 (soup/salad/sandwich—both professional/student) at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies.
Finalists would be selected to compete during the MCF Summit proper in September.
Other competitions that would be held in September include Nestea cocktails, bartending, Nescafé coffee cold concoctions, napkin folding, tuna platter, cold dessert platter, three-plated cold appetizer, banana delights, waiters’ relay, URC artistic bread display, URC artisan sweet dough basket, URC Tropical Fruit medley, bake off and URC Pasta.
