The Dhammakaya Cetiya is a symbol of mankind's peacefulness arising from the helping hands of people around the world creating world peace through inner peace.
The Dhammakaya Foundation, under the leadership of Ven. Phrarajabavanavisudh or Ven Dhammajayo Bhikkhu, president of the foundation, has set the goal to establish the Dhammakaya Cetiya in order to create world peace for all mankind by developing a peaceful mind in every individual. In fact, world peace will be a result of everyone having a peaceful mind. Therefore, we need a center for mindpower development for everyone so that people will be spiritually happy and find true happiness within themselves. Besides developing the mind's power through meditation, we also cultivate moral conduct for interested people. Therefore, we will organize many activities beneficial to all mankind.
http://www.dhammakaya.or.th/tour/images/cetiya-people.JPG
The Dhammakaya Cetiya must last at least 1,000 years.
The President of the Dhammakaya Foundation, Ven. Dhammajayo Bhikkhu, desires our world to have lasting peace through meditation. The Dhammakaya Cetiya is the symbol of world peace through inner peace; thus, people in succeeding generations will still have the building designed to manifest world peace by their ancestors. During 1998-2000, the world economy was in a recession, especially Thailand, where most donors who were living here confronted an economic crisis. However, there were some who realized the importance of mind and spiritual development for world peace, and those people donated money from their savings to help establish the Dhammakaya Cetiya. Meanwhile, Ven. Dhammajayo Bhikkhu and his disciples have built the Dhammakaya Cetiya with the utmost purity of intention to help people around the world attain true happiness and insight. Thus, there isn't any part of the Dhammakaya Cetiya that is a profit-generated business.
The Dhammakaya Cetiya must have 1,000,000 personal Buddha images.
The outer shell of the Dhammakaya Cetiya will be decorated with 300,000 Buddha images, on the hemispherical dome and the surrounding terrace.
http://www.dhammakaya.or.th/tour/images/buddha-b-2.jpg
The inside will be decorated with 700,000 Buddha images.
The size of the individual personal Buddha image is 15 centimeters by 15 centimeters widening to a base of 18 centimeters. Anyone donating a particular amount of money for building a personal Buddha image may have his/her name or the name of a beloved inscribed on the base of a personal Buddha image. In fact, world peace is one of everyone's life duties. It can't be created by one person alone; world peace needs everyone's hands to join together and make it happen. As such, the personal Buddha images on the Dhammakaya Cetiya are a symbol of mankind's happiness that everyone has lent his/her hand to establish world peace. Dhammakaya Cetiya will be the place to create inner peace for the individual, then expand inner peace to the community, society, country, nation, continent, world.
The architects and engineers of the Dhammakaya Cetiya project have done extensive research and have compared the results with historical evidence. Based on this research, the final conclusion is that the structural material to use in the project would be concrete and iron. Why? From the ancient Pyramid of Egypt, the Egyptians at that time used white lime to seal between the stones of Pyramids. At present, the white lime still exists as a substance sealing the stones together in the Pyramid. Therefore, the structural engineers of the Dhammakaya Cetiya project conducted research to find the most enduring concrete to support the goal of lasting 1000 years. Finally, he discovered a special concrete formula that has a low humidity formula which will allow the building to remain viable as long as 1000 years. The special concrete formula was sent to Denmark in 1995 and proved to be one of the most enduring concrete formulas. The CEPAC company in America also tested and verified the endurance of the concrete formula for the Dhammakaya Cetiya.

Size :
The Dhammakaya Cetiya covers 1 square kilometer and is divided into 4 zones :
Zone 1 : "Buddha-Ratana" or the zone with all the personal Buddha images. This zone has 300,000 Buddha images 15 x 15 cm with a 18 cm base width.
Zone 2 : "Dhamma-Ratana" This zone is connected to zone 1. It symbolizes the peacefulness and happiness that Dhamma (the teaching of the Buddha) brings to every sentient being. It also represents the continuous teaching from the Buddha to the Sangha (monks).
Zone 3 : "Sangha-Ratana" is used as seating for the monks who participate in or organize the sacred ceremonies.
Zone 4 : is the ground that encircles the Sangha-Ratana. It is big enough to assemble approximately one million participants for a ceremony.
The Dhammakaya Cetiya has a total weight of 250,000 tons.
There are 3,333 0.40 x 0.40 meter piles with the structural concrete having a 1000 year lifetime.

As the number of temple attendants in major ceremonies increased from several thousand to over one hundred thousand, the former assembly hall designed to accommodate 20,000 could not handle the ever-increasing numbers of people attending/participating in temple activities.
In 1997 The Dhammakaya Foundation decided to build a larger assembly hall that would be able to serve a much larger body of people. The new building is called the Dhammakaya Hall.
Dhammakaya Hall is located in front of the Dhammakaya Cetiya. It was designed to be a multi-functional, two-story building suitable for meditation, various activities, and Dhamma instruction. The upper level was designed to accommodate 100,000 with the lower level used for parking. If the number of attendants exceeds 100,000, the lower level can be converted to a gathering place for another 100,000 people. Parking is then moved to the surrounding open space.
Dhammakaya Hall, covering an area over forty acres, is believed to be the largest public building in the world.

After two years of detailed retouching, the Golden Image of Luang Pu Wat Paknam is now completed and is being prepared for enshrining in a secure shrine hall at the World Dhammakaya Centre where it can be subject to pay homage by the general public.
The precious and sacred image is worthy of a elegant and secure shrine. For this purpose, it has been agreed to build Phramongkolthepmuni Memorial Hall, which also accommodate a museum and a theatre.

The Ubosatha (or chapel) is the place where important religious activities are held. Traditional ceremonies that take place inside the Ubosatha include the ordination ceremony, the recitation of monk's codes of conduct (held on the days of full moon and new moon), Dhamma sermons, etc.
Inside the Ubosatha, there is a Buddha image in the meditation posture situated right in front of the back wall. The calmness expressed on the Buddha’s face effectively causes visitors to experience peace within themselves. The image also reminds visitors of the Buddha as if he were present at the Ubosatha.
The Ubosatha of Wat Phra Dhammakaya was built following the Buddhist philosophy of peacefulness, cleanliness and tranquility. Construction of this building begun in 1977 and was completed in 1981. The size of the building is exactly the same as the Ubosatha of Wat Benjamabopitra, commonly known as the "Marble Temple", which is 246 square meters. The Ubosatha’s roof style was derived from the roof style of Northern Thai traditional architecture. There is a corridor around the building which has a total area of 1,145 square meters. To build within the concepts of Buddhist philosophy, the building materials had to be strong, easily obtained, and inexpensive. This building can serve 200 monks participating in Buddhist ceremonies.
In order to permit easier maintenance, the establishment of the Ubosatha of Wat Phra Dhammakaya was considered avoiding the use of woodcraft which is traditionally Thai.
The success of Ubosatha of Wat Phra Dhammakaya came from wise and judicious planning, and from the work of all the laypeople who lent their hands in the construction and completion of the building.

I'm just curious why 100,000 baht donation exactly. May be the money is going to buy one of these buddhas to put on the steps of the temple?

BTW the architecture is interesting and I've never heard of anyone going to all the efforts trying to make their buildings last a thousand year.
