Black Cat October 13th, 2010, 02:46 AM This has always been an amazing pilgrimage church, I believe the central section between the lower and upper chapels where people light candles and where the tomb of Brother Andre is located was designed by Ernest Cormier, though someone please correct me if I am mistaken.

Montreal's Brother Andre becomes a saint
The Roman Catholic Church has, for the first time, made a Canadian-born man a saint.
Brother André Bessette and four others were canonized by Pope Benedict XVI during a ceremony at St. Peter's Square on Sunday. Thousands of believers have credited him with working miracles, and the campaign to make him a saint has continued since his death in 1937 at age 91.
The other new saints include Mother Mary MacKillop, the founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Australia's outback, Stanislaw Soltys, a 15th-century Polish priest, Italian nuns Giulia Salzano and Battista Varano and Spanish nun Candida Maria de Jesus Cipitria y Barriola.
In Montreal, the faithful crowded around a big-screen television at St. Joseph's Oratory to watch the ceremony.
Pope Benedict noted that Brother Andre was poorly educated but understood what was essential to his faith.
"Doorman at the Notre Dame College in Montreal, he showed boundless charity and did everything possible to soothe the despair of those who confided in him," Benedict said.
Brother André, who was once called the Miracle Man of Montreal, founded St. Joseph's Oratory, tucked into the slope of Mount Royal, overlooking the city.
He was declared venerable in 1978 and beatified in 1982 after a case of healing in 1956 was recognized officially by the Vatican as a miracle.
Over the years, millions of people have signed petitions asking for his sainthood.

Funny, coz the same news broadcaster kept pegging the saint as a --uhm-- mere immigrant just days ago...
VelesHomais October 20th, 2010, 12:00 AM I visited it at night, it's a great place to just sit on the stairs directly under it. Quite beautiful.
