Lalibela is a town mostly know for it's "rocky churches", which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lalibela is a town in northern Ethiopia. Lalibela is one of Ethiopia's holiest cities, second only to Aksum, and is a center of pilgrimage for much of the country. Unlike Aksum, the population of Lalibela is almost completely Ethiopian Orthodox Christian. Lalibela was intended to be a New Jerusalem in response to the capture of Jerusalem by Muslims, and many of its historic buildings take their name and layout from buildings in Jerusalem.

I can't believe I have been to Ethiopia twice without visiting the historic north (Lalibela, Gondar, Yeha ect...). I'll fix this injustice in my next visit inshallah.

Actually, I went to Kenya. I thought I was going to have had the chance to visit Ethiopia by now, but this new career is keeping me quite busy. I will certainly go within the next few weeks though. Thanks for asking.

I paid 10Birr (ethio ID) foreigners pay 50Birr. I didn't enter all of the churches just the ones in the pictures so I don't know if there would have been an additional cost to the other churches.. I doubt it.

Damn... just like that? and this is for foreigners/visitors rate? If so, it should include a guide with that price.
The guide I had was great that we took him out to dinner with us to the "Ben Ababa" restaurant and tipped him an additional 100birr for 500birr total.

The prices I mentioned were as of December 2012

You hearted me Abnet. Backpackers have interest for culture and history than any other tourists. It is their style of travelling to get in touch with local People, to feel the way of life the locals and to learn more from that. Believe me these are a group of toursists, who advocate about the positive side of poor countries they visited. Their budget is of course limited because they have to travel for several weeks. But they can contribute to the income of many local people than other tourists. I wish that many backpackers come to visit Ethiopia.
