@ Sathya.. I was also in Team BHP for sometime, it was a good forum, but now I think it has become more commercial and has just become a status symbol to be a member in it. I also lost interest in it since I feel forum's are places where passion for the subject is shared. A auto forum looks good when automobile lovers are there. But unfortunately in Team-BHP everyone are just joining and spoiling the forum. many of my friends in Team-BHP who were also auto freaks have moved out..

And more funny is in my office there are cars with Team-BHP stickers but when I checked out, they have just put the stickers for style. They didn't know what was Team-BHP all about.. Really a sad state.

Do contribute towards this new thread... Lets continue our automobile passion..

Cool thread!

I like the new trucks since modernisation & competition is needed.

The older Tata trucks are unique & have character with their own individualism.

Tata is getting better all the time with their new designs.

^^
The old TATA trucks are Horrendous. They're inefficient, filth/pollution belching beasts, which have lousy mileage, no aesthetics, and are extremely prone to break down.
On any swanky new highway, the mere appearance of these ugly monstrosities takes the beauty away - and the sooner they're phased out, the better it is for the country and the environment.

Reiterate. Nothing Mars the beauty of place more than the mere appearance of these ugly trucks. Hope they're quickly phased out and thus ending one of the last socialist bastions of India - alongside the premier padmini and the ambassador.

(Please don't throw nostalgic feverish comments at me for this. I HATED the fact that you had to wait for years and years just to book one of the two ridiculous cars in India. The old Tata Trucks are reminiscent of that era)

While these may be "new" they are based on ancient Mercedes-Benz designs.

Yes the new ones using Daewoo technology are nice but they seem to be more for specialized purposes.

They need to design a new truck series from the ground up to replace those old 1210s, 1613s, etc.

Agreed. But the problem is infrastructure. Volvo wanted to enter the Indian truck market(powerful trucks) more than a decade ago. But it had to switch to niche segment because of lack of proper roads(article below). For the past few years roads are improving hence more and more Indian truck makers are upgrading their models. Here's an interesting article in Forbes India (http://business.in.com/article/work-in-progress/more-truck-for-the-road/12112/1).

Hopefully with more and more quality roads coming up we'll see better and powerful trucks.

Hope, we will see the pics soon

Have seen the Tatra tippers once in Bangalore few months back. L&T is having these trucks, but didnt had my camera along that time so missed it.

Ural trucks are there in the mining belt of Jharkand, Orissa, etc. Have not see the trucks in south here. Hope any SSCI member from Eastern region gets to capture the pics.

Mercedes Benz is in Bellary area and Andhra mining belt. These are more of Offroad trucks used in Mining and large Road construction hence these are not visible always.

Hope one day will be able to catch all these and share it with you all here.

Now even Mahindra Navistar trucks have started coming. I have seen their dealership opening in the outskirts of Bangalore near Nelmangala.

True, but I am talking about a like for like replacement of the old Tata & Leyland designs of the regular Class 4 and 5 trucks (not sure what the classes are in India). I know the Japanese tried to get into this market but seems Tata was too strong for them. That's why I think Tata & Leyland should bite the bullet and completly revamp their bread and butter lines. Unfortunately they really have no incentive to do so.

@ Sammyk, we have another thread on Auto Industry, where there is discussions and posting of news. So thought of keeping this thread for CV pics and road transport only.

There is no hard and fast rule that only pics can be posted. But lets not duplicate the Auto Industry thread. We can have mini discussions and lets have lot of road transportation pics.

Will be posting some more pics soon. :)

Well, yes, there is that thread. Unfortunately it is buried in another sub-forum and doesn't get much attention. I thought this thread could be for pictures and discussion of only commercial vehicles. The "Pictures Only" tag probably discourages any discussion for fear of being off-topic.

Probably means the truck always operates with its lights on. Message is likely there to tell people this so they don't think the driver has them on by mistake during daylight hours.

please consider it a rule then.

surely you do not want any garbage pic in place of no pic ...

Why? If you want detailed photos of such vehicles you can always go to the manufacturers website. A garbage pic to you is not necessarily garbage to another. These photos show the autos in their environment. Some may want to see them like this.

Anyways, this is not meant to be some professional photographer's gallery. I think we should welcome all photos. If you don't like them then simply keep scrolling to the ones you do like. :)

This truck is a Liquid Oxygen carrier, its highly inflammable and dangerous.

Hence if you observe, its a rule by transport authorities for any highly explosive carriers to have this written in front of the truck. You can find it written in Chemical carriers and Explosive carriers as well.

It is a message to vehicles coming from opposite direction to drive carefully and not to come near the truck.

It also means the truck would not give side. And if the truck is coming in a narrow road the other vehicle needs to give way.

Headlights are on during day time to denote emergency also.

A TVS Arjun autorickshaw, among its bajaj counterparts

I am glad that you posted some pics. Its a good try. First time I also know you don't get perfect pics. Once you get a idea you will click better for sure.

I think you have taken the pics from mobile cam. I too take pics from mobile when there is no camera around.

Here are some tips when you take from mobile.

1. Pics will come clear when there is good brightness around. So try taking pics directly, pics taken from inside the bus with a glass window will still reduce the clarity.

2. You need to go near the object. In Camera there are zoom. But mobile cam zooms are less, hence you need to judge the object. Click 2 or 3 times see the Image quality and keep changing the angel. You will learn it by experience.

3. For pictures on the move, you need to keep your hand still and must click few seconds earlier, else you will miss the object on the move.

4. Avoid taking pics in late evenings or night when its cloudy.

Hope to see some good pics soon from your end.

C'mon, there's no rule like that. A picture from a distance is better than none at all.

Yes, we need to give a chance to all.

please consider it a rule then.

surely you do not want any garbage pic in place of no pic ...

Don't get offended Nirax, 'studdmanster' has taken the pics from mobile hence the images look small. It cant be compared with Camera pics. But he made an effort which we must appreciate.

And yes, we are able to see some different vehicles from different places. Lets enjoy the vehicles and the background.

One more thing is most of the manufacturers website in India do not have good pics of their products barring a few. Some don't even showcase what all products are being offered. Its only when we see it on the roads we come to know about it. And some dont even update their sites for years

Taking a perfect picture is really difficult, And I am also not a professional photographer, I didn't go to any class, but came to know How to take good pics from experience.

So guys lets focus on hunting for more unique and amazing pics. :)

MAN and Volvo trucks at Monorail site

^^ BTW Does anyone know what is the rear engine section called. I know its a additional engine added to give more horse power for carrying huge construction materials like 100 to 200 tonnes.

These trucks are known as 'Heavy Haulage' trucks.

This MAN looks like a imported one. Its different from that of its Indian version.

@ ashwa ... here are some more similar trucks... don't get scared :)

But I am always surprised how they balance the extra length at the rear. These trucks originally should have been around 12 feet. I think they have re-modified it to 16 to 18 feet.

I wonder if there is some sort of counterweight placed in the area above the cab. Also, with proper loading i'm sure they can be balanced or we'd be seeing these trucks sitting on their asses all the time.

Nice - they look like Rosenbauer (Austria) Panther 6x6 fire trucks that all the Indian airports seem to be queuing for. I think BIAL/HIAL were first off the block followed by DIAL. Now many of the major airports under AAI too seem to be going in for them.

is tata prima from the daewoo stable ?

er...it is from the Tata stable. Tata bought out Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Co. (trucks only - buses were/are a separate biz) a few years back and the model 'brought over' was the Tata Novus (2005).

Here is a Tata Novus plying in South Africa:
http://www.sa-transport.co.za/trucks/tata/tata_novus_ra06.JPG
Source: TRANSPORT IN SOUTH and SOUTHERN AFRICA website.

The Prima range is the result of the Tata World Truck program which has been going on for a few years now. It is the end result of several years worth of hard work on part of employees and partners of Tata Motors - and I am sure it involves input from TDCV (as the erstwhile Daewoo truck ops are now called) as well, but this one is all Tata as far as development goes.

Nice - they look like Rosenbauer (Austria) Panther 6x6 fire trucks that all the Indian airports seem to be queuing for. I think BIAL/HIAL were first off the block followed by DIAL. Now many of the major airports under AAI too seem to be going in for them.

Thanks for posting.

them austrian, not sure if they drive cars or what not but they sure know how to make some good fire trucks.

They are airing the same episode again on Sunday at 5. Hopefully I will be able to catch the first 30 mins. The guy with the Mohawk is Rick Yemm. I have never seen him in the regular IRTs. I don't feel bad for Alex. Many on message boards are saying he made the right choice and they would be right there with him, blah blah. I say nonsense. The other two made it just fine. This guy has some 30 plus years of experience and he chickens out without even leaving the city. Guess he was just too old to adjust.

He got in to an accident (sideswiping a car) before he left Delhi. That unnerved him I think. He clearly didnt know how to drive in India. He was following lane rules/right of way like we would in the US.

^^ Alex is a very stand up guy. He is old plus he has some heart problem that could be the reason why he left. I missed the actual fender bender scene but saw it at the end of the episode when they were talking about each of them. Last season on regular IRT, even with his heart condition and age he helped some other rookie driver dig the big rig out of the snow when the rookie driver swerved off the road. Not to mention in freezing temperature.

Driving the Indian Trucks itself is a big Challenge for Foreigners. Good to see they took on the challenge. A expert driver has to take on all challenges, I feel Alex failed in this. A good driver has to have a good presence of mind and a good road judgment. A driver who can take a truck to its final destination without a scratch is a real hero. And hundreds of Indian drivers do this daily in the Himalayan terrain. Hats off to them as well. The roads to Leh, Ladhak are still extreme wish they try these roads also.

If you look at it like that than yeah he "failed" in his task but I won't say that he chickened out. The fender bender could have happened to Lisa or Rick. In the last five mins of the episode, I think he mentioned about mob or something. I think he got scared when the crowd gathered around him because of the accident, which could be really intimidating in a foreign county. Did it happen twice? I didn't get to see the first 30 mins.

Well, then he was over-hyped.

Did what happen twice? An accident? Yah he tore a door off of a car but that wasn't his fault. The guy in the car opened the door as the truck passed. There was no mob for that one.

Auto OEM's put restrictions on their models being used as Taxi's for a period of 1 to 1.5 yrs from the time of launch of the models as it spoils the image of the model. So this Polo getting a yello board is very strange....

And you see what image Logan has after it was extensively deployed as Cab by Meru and Easy cabs.....people start having a feel of owning a car fit for a cab .....same as what happened to Indica becoz of Indicab. I am telling this confidently as Ford did not allow Fiesta's to be registered as Cabs for one year when i was there.

i don't get that logic. out here, I have seen Camry, Chevy and even merc has cabs. In germany, BMW is used extensively in the taxi fleet. Why would people not buy a car model that is also used as a cab? In my mind, if a car can undergo the abuse that comes with being used as a taxi, it should be a prime candidate for your own personal use as well.

It's because people are stupid and have "status" issues. No one really gives a damn what you drive but some people need to feel important.

Not to be mean to India but when I came there a year ago I noticed how much they care about "status." In India if some owns a freakin Honda or Toyota car they are "rich." In the US, most people own Hondas and Toyotas.
because they are pretty cheap.Forget about seeing a Merc or BMW on Indian Roads as taxi, u bearly see a personly owned merc or BMW once in a blue moon. Mercs and BMWs dont deserve current Indian roads, especially in the city where there is too much traffic and scrapes and damages will happen daily but maybe by 2030, who knows? Maybe if Public Transport starts to operate BMW and Merc city buses!

First up, the ubiquitous Tata 2518c with its Merc-derived cabin:

Over the weekend I checked out the Hino Trucks.. They have a authorized sales and service dealer called Cavery Hino in Bangalore near Innovative Film City in Bidadi.

The truck is just awesome... its quality is too good and also has a air condition cabin.

Hino has both On Road and Off road trucks for various applications.. the friendly sales executive explained in detail on the truck features and even showed me the truck.. Was really impressed with the truck and its cabin. The cabin has many comfortable features just like what you have in your car.

And guess what's its has started selling well in Karnataka, there are a lot of them in Bellary.

These are not regular trucks like MAN or AMW, these are special off road heavy duty trucks which can perform in rough terrains and extreeme weather conditions.

These trucks are designed for high performance in mines, snow and sand. They are not into regular applications, hence they do not have fancy looks like On road trucks.

Most of these trucks are with mining companies or large construction companies who build dams, etc.

And Indian Army uses these trucks in remote area's.

ohk...but the off roaders made by Tata and AL for army, still seems better, but at the end of the day if it could serve the purpose for which it is made and it turns out to be a VFM, then it could have a good market base, because now the commercial vehicle owners also go by looks, afterall, 'jo dikhta hai, wahi bikta hai!'

Yes the situation seems very pathetic for sales figure of tata nano. The sales figure across India for tata nano for the month of November is just 506 cars!!!!....Very poor in sales point of view!
Reasons could be, being so low cost, people are thinking that why buy tata nano, when one have the option of so many hatchbacks, and another concern is its security, cuz there's only the front boot space, to save you in case of an head on collision!!

Would Nanos be a good replacement for auto rickshaws?

barrykul
December 13th, 2010, 04:20 AM
Yes, replacing the wretched 3-wheeler Piaggio/Bajaj auto rickshaw would be ideal. India's image in the rest of the world is spoiled by this archaic contraption called the 3 wheeler, when most of the world has moved on to modern 4 wheelers. 3 wheels are dangerous and it is a safety issue. Previously the Bajaj Auto engine was 2 stroke monster spewing toxic fumes, they changed it to 4 stroke engines.

Nano should concentrate on the global export market. Many African countries would love a cheap 4 wheeler. If they upgrade the Nano with more amenities (radio/ac/airbags)/euro standards, electric motor etc they can sell them in India like hot cakes.

A semi isn't specific to carrying shipping containers. A semi is any articulated truck whose trailer partially sits on the tractor and isn't pulled completely behind the tractor.

The "front hump" is just a design. There are cabovers in the US too though not very popular anymore.

Pictured above is not a semi. This is (Kadri posted it earlier):

Yes Manhindra Navistar is being manufactured in India from around a year. They are based out of Pune.

Thier sales has been a bit slow compared to MAN.

This may not be fesiable , since there are a hell lot of old and outdated trucks. Government may even become bankrupt.

Instead the government should have a well designed transport policy for truck operators. The current policy is based on number of years and fitness certificate. But there are various loopholes so still you can find old tucks still running.

And in Bangalore if you see there are lot of Government trucks which are in miserable conditions. First they need to replace these.

Mrutyunjaya Senapati, director of corporate planning and development at BMM, said: “We chose the Grove because the high-quality image of the brand fits with our own brand. We are both leaders in our fields. In addition, we had excellent discussions with Tractors India and are happy the company can give us the support we need.”

Prem Nathani, Manitowoc’s national sales manager for mobile cranes added: “The delivery of this crane clearly demonstrates the market potential India has. This is the first 300 tonne Grove All-Terrain crane in India, and we believe there is demand for bigger cranes than this.”

BMM is a leading supplier of iron ore and a pioneer in sponge iron production, which is an alternative and more efficient method of producing iron from ore. The company is expanding its plant to allow it to reach an annual output of 2 million tonnes of iron ore. This will make the company not only a national leader, but also one of the world’s largest companies in the field.

Acid Tanks are round in shape, unlike petroleum tankers which are a bit flat. Also if you observe the top, the black colour is a protective layer on the tank. Also most of the chemical tankers have single chamber made of thick metal and would have a single lid at the rear side of the tank.

If you observe the side and the back of a Chemical carrier the chemical descriptions are displayed. Its a mandatory thing to display as per motor vehicle act.

Normally cement has this segregation tendency when under agitation,Say if the truck bumps due to speed breakers the V shaped container will have less sloshing effect and hence less segregation.:) my funda!

Hi!

Studdmanster,I have actually no idea as to why the containers are y shaped.I just put up some funda which I learnt long time back :hammer:There are experts here to answer your question

If you like to hear more from me-Here you go :D Dry cement can be transported in Bags there is no need for containers.Concrete mixers are for slow -agitation to keep the concrete matrix in perfect form(so as to not set) and maintain consistency during its transit to the site from the cement mixing site.Concrete mixers are used if the Concrete mixing plant and the site are far off from each other.

The above is a pic of a container which is meant for wet cement and it is put in use to just transport wet concrete to the site given that site is not far off(or there are no traffic jams)

Again these are my observations.:)You may add more points, things will only get more interesting. It is fun to discuss before arriving t the right answer:D

I guess Y shaped containers reduce sloshing effect :)

^^Akash, I read your post several times to understand what you meant by it. And what is the need for this much smileys?

Yes, those Y or V shaped containers are for transporting cement. And it is for transporting 'dry' cement only. But there is one question asked by Akash that dry cement are normally transported in bags from factories then why this way? There are some reasons;

1) For big construction projects:

In such projects, cement would be collected in a sylo before transferred to the 'batching plant' (where it is mixed in the correct proportion). In such cases it is always better get the sylo filled with cement directly from such a bulk carrier than procured through the puny 50kg bags.

2) Remote packing centres:

Some cases, the packing of cement would be done in a different location. Such a situation also, these bulk carriers are used.

Concrete

In big batching plants, wet concrete is pumped to the site where it is required, if the batching plant happens to be at the site itself. All big sites will have their own batching plants.

When the site doesn't have space for a batching plant, RMC comes handy. Wet concrete is transported in the Mixer trucks to keep the concrete in agitation and then pumping it to the required place at the site.
