This one looks really awkward. 5.5/10

Liz L

6/10 - The glass cylinder rising from the square stone of the lower part of the tower is effective, and the glass contrasts nicely with the stone. The strips of glass running down the entire facade are also a good touch. But the tower is too broad and boxy, and the stone needs, IMO more detailing.
The base seems to be fairly well done, though it's hard to tell, and there's more good contrast between glass and stone. But its different colors mean that it doesn't seem to go with the tower, so the overall effect is cluttered and fussy.
And the top doesn't seem to fit in too well, either, since it doesn't have anything much in common with the building underneath it.

Its cool. I don't care for those type spires. The structure is good and I really like the idea of it on top of that market thing or whatever it is.

this is a building in search of an identity!!..it can't decide what it wants to be..between the stone exterior and the cylinder tower and the top it looks like 3 buildings in one..i've seen designs like this in grade school....yuck!....4/10

Too wide and fat. The dome at the top makes it stand out a bit, but the dome does not really fit with the rest of the building.

I know this comes across as juvenile to many, but I cant help but feel that it is a cheerful design and at least its highly symmetrical.

Muse
November 20th, 2002, 07:37 PM
...and yes, at the very least it is symmetrical.

Another scraper with a combination of forms and materials.

Although i do like the curved green glass, what intarnation is that multi-colored, multi-storey base :? .

A "tryhard" tall.

BTW Where is this "dome" that adelaideglenelg refers to? More like a spire or pinnacle me finks.

6 I kinda guess.

Complete and utter crap. This is exactly the sort of building that is giving Asian highrise architecture a very bad name around the World. Perhaps the Asian culture prefers this sort of chintz, but in my culture, buildings like this are ridiculed and derided.

sorry, but the base is terrible, and the crown, and the rest is only very slightly better...and none of the seperate styles fit togther at all.

And how exactly do you get a 5 year old building to look so dirty?

3.5/10 - I only give 3 or less to complete crap but this one comes very close.

Whoah! That nastiness is on the pedestal permanantly? I thought that these were construction pics, and that the cladding hadn't been put on the pedestal of the building yet... Yikes, that really is nasty and very cheap/chintzy looking...

Man, I think this is a real bonafide case of a building being more of an eyesore/embarrassment to the city, instead of showing us how "great" they are.

Several things are quite unfortunate about Jiala Plaza, I'm afraid, although it also has redeeming features. It rises quite awkwardly out of a bases that seems hardly related to the tower. Almost the entire top third is a patchwork of different elements that don't relate to each other. Yet I like the color combination of the tan stone and the green glass, as well as parts of the design of the lower portion of the building. A 5.5.

ok here is my attempted to be objective here. what really makes this bldg not attactive is the base. without the mall there it would look at look taller and detract away from the busy top. Also they should have done something better with the roof cone. The flat sides make it look like a shiny cell tower. All in all this one is just too busy for its own good. Hopefully other taller bldgs will crowd it out or surround it for its own good.

It does look good at night though....... 6.5/10

Its not a bad building, but its not that great either. It is a unique use of space, and the design is somewhat unusual (although not by any means unique). I like the general shape (minus exteraneous and juvenile architectural details) of the tower. Still the WHOLE thing feels like a mall (not just the mall part), a lot like a "plastic/commercial" feeling mall in the US, or like a toy for a toddler. Like the color, and the mix of glass and masonry, and from a business standpoint its interesting, but thats it.

I gave it a 6.5/10 because, hey, at least they tried. The podium and the silly "hat" don't fit the main body of the building, but at least it's not a box. Lose the podium and hat, and it would be pretty darn good. But as it is, it's just too busy and random to be appealing.

I like the bottom and middle with the green glass and the white stone. They look great together. But once the stone ends and all thats left is the green cylinder, all hell breaks loose. the four squares are atrocious and the crown isn't much better. ruins the whole project.

The interior looks extravagant, but the exterior seems a mismatched patchwork of differnt styles - pathetically patched together. Agree with Pablo that it looks better at night - maybe the darkness hides some of the patchwork? =D

What a mess! A clear pattern has emerged for highrises in mainland China - in a totally misguided effort to look "modern", incompetent Chinese architects (and equally incompetent and meddlesome bureaucrats) try to cramp all kinds of shapes and styles into a highrise project regardless of their architectural merits.

The result - a bunch of ugly, garbage-like eyesores far worse than simple cubes.

It's not just inexperience or bad taste anymore; it's a sheer lack of common sense.

(Common sense is in spite of, not the result of, education.)

The architects of this building are obviously unqualified. My guess is that they got the job through "back door" - the way of life in mainland China.

Most mainland Chinese architects are incompetent. We all know that through their atrocious designs. But one thing you probably didn't know is their huge ego. They readily consider themselves among the best, if not the best, in the world. The rabid attacks on French architect Paul Andrew over the design of Beijing's National Grand Theatre were more than enough to demonstrate their arrogance.

As for the building ...

It doesn't matter how new a building is in China. Most of the time it looks dirty before the construction is complete and stays dirty afterwards. I theorize that it's an extention of the bad personal hygiene of mainland Chinese ... the spitting, the public toilets, the smoking etc etc.

It is not carried down to the base but is flat surfaced.....not sure i like that too much. at least they carried the glass down. the material they used to construct the base looks super filthy...that's that good chinese air.....a 7
