Klerksdorp will soon benefit from a new regional mall being developed by the same team that developed the highly successful Mooiriver Mall (Mall of the year 2010) in Potchefstroom.

Located conveniently at the eastern entrance to the town, the mall will cater not only for Klerksdorp, but for surrounding towns, as well. Construction is planned to start early 2011 and the project value is estimated at R1 billion. The 60 000 m2 will consist of three major food anchors, fashion, lifestyle, entertainment, sport and restaurant offerings. A modern design, great tenants and ample parking all add up to a new an exciting shopping experience for the people of Klerksdorp.

This Abacus group seem intent on developing alot of potentially unsustainable malls...

They do not want to get into the same issues as the Villa in pretoria

I am sure they have put a lot of research into it before they propose to build it..

It'll be servicing a population of around 350 000. That could be enough to sustain it.

yes and no. look at the number of malls across the country that put in alot of research and are litterally drains on the pension funds that support them. Alot of figures these companies bandy about about "research indicates..." are not telling the full story

I'm not sure how sustainable is this. Klerksdorp already has two malls, City Mall in the city centre which was recently renovated, and Flamwood, which services the richer north-western suburbs. Another mall would see the flight of the few remaining stores in the CBD. Klerksdorp still has a double storey Edgars and Truworths on one street. Plus lots of furniture stores in other parts of the CBD.

Construction of the Mooirivier Mall causes major vacancies in the neighbouring RiverWalk Shopping Centre. I forsee the same with this one. Plus neighbouring towns like Stilfontein are not doing so well, with Pamodzi Gold going belly up.

I really wish some sort of laws would be brought in existence that would force developers to develop town/city centres instead of contributing to urban sprawl and decay.

The rate at which we're building malls is alarming. Many large cites overseas survive with a couple of malls around this size, but we're building them in small towns.

The City Council of Bloemfontein came up with an idea similar to that but the developers were totally against it.
