The stadium will be closed immediately after the Shah Alam Mayor Soccer Cup 2011.
SHAH ALAM: The 17-year-old Shah Alam Stadium will be closed for refurbishment works soon.
Shah Alam Mayor Datuk Mohd Jaafar Mohd Atan said the stadium will be closed immediately after the Shah Alam Mayor Soccer Cup 2011 final, which is expected to be held in the middle of this month.
The stadium will be closed for about three months.
Jaafar said the refurbishment which costs about RM3 million will involve repair works on the roof, toilets and improving the field landscape.
The stadium will be given a new coat of paint as well as better lighting systems.
"We're going to improve the lighting system so that the floodlights will be at least 1,000 LUX at all four sections of the field," said Jaafar.
The 155,000 sq m stadium can seat up to 80,000 people at a time. It was once the largest stadium in the country, before the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil was built.
Other than football matches, the stadium also hosted other events such as concerts. It also has a go-kart circuit.
The first leg of the The Amazing Race Asia Season 1 which involved riding go-karts was held here.
The stadium, built in 1990, was designed by renowned Malaysian architect Hijjas Kasturi.
It was officially opened in July 1994 and has never undergone major refurbishment works.
Shortly after its official opening ceremony, a friendly football match was held between the Selangor FA team and Dundee United.
There were also friendlies between Bayern Munich, Leeds United and Flamengo at the time.
Last Saturday, the Malaysia Cup final between Negri Sembilan and Terengganu was held at the stadium.

AFTER months of rectification works, the Shah Alam Stadium in Section 13 will be ready to host its first activity — a football match — in April.
Shah Alam mayor Datuk Mohd Jaafar Mohd Atan who visited the stadium yesterday was pleased with the on-going works which began late last year.
He said the council took a loan of RM3.4mil from the state government to rectify problems at the stadium.
They focused on areas such as quality of grass, lighting, roofing, sitting area and players’ changing rooms.
“We are taking good care of the turf which is the ‘Seashore Paspalum’, a type of soft and manageable grass.Everything will be completed and ready for the first football match in April where the stadium plays host to the match between Selangor and Terengganu,” he said.

Getting down to it: Mohd Jaafar and some others checking the condition of the grass at the Shah Alam Stadium recently.
Plastic chairs which were damaged by frustrated fans after explosive matches have been replaced while at the players room, new flooring and benches were installed.
At present Mohd Jaafar said only the lighting and sound system of the stadium was 70% completed.
He also advised his officers to look into purchasing better quality paints for the many pillars around the stadium area.
When asked if the pitch would be flooded after a downpour, Mohd Jaafar said he was confident that with proper drainage it would not be affected.

KOTA BAHARU, March 12 (Bernama) -- The PAS-led Kelantan government will go ahead on its proposal to build a new stadium although the Kelantan Football Association (Kafa) has planned a RM300 million stadium in Bandar Baharu Tunjong here.
State Human Development, Youth, Sports and NGOs Committee chairman, Datuk Abdul Fatah Mahmood said the decision by Kafa did not affect the original proposal by the state to build its own stadium.
"The more stadiums the better for the government's efforts to develop football in the state," he told reporters here, Monday.
Previously, Chairman of Kelantan economic planning, finance and welfare committee, Datuk Husam Musa had announced that the state government would build its own stadium through the privatisation of an integrated project in Bukit Merbau, Pasir Puteh.
