15 bid for STC‘s relocation
Job valued at RM500-RM600 mil, new turf club to be in the north along North-South Highway

By Yap Lih Huey, 10.57am

Some 15 major property players are eyeing a RM500 million to RM600 million contract to relocate and build the new Selangor Turf Club (STC) premises outside of Kuala Lumpur.

STC deputy chairman Datuk Richard Cham says the developers have submitted their proposals for the relocation, design and construction of the new premises since tenders were called in November.

Among the developers are Hong Leong Properties Bhd, Lion Land Bhd, SP Setia Bhd, Gamuda Bhd, Talam Corporation Bhd and MK Land Holdings Bhd.

The others include Arab-Malaysian Property Trust Management Bhd, Mah Sing Group Bhd, Berjaya Land Bhd and Tan & Tan Developments Bhd.

The turf club, which is currently located in Sungai Besi, will be relocated because of traffic congestion in the area and unsuitability of the land.

Cham tells FinancialDaily that the new site for the STC premises should ideally be located in the northern region along the North-South Highway.

It is learnt that there are three prominent developers that own large land banks in the northern area — Talam, Berjaya and Land & General Bhd with 4,000 acres, 16,400 acres and 2,700 acres respectively.

STC has been located on a tin mining land with a 90-year lease in Sungai Besi since 1993 when it moved from Jalan Ampang. Cham says STC wants to relocate to a freehold land.

The previous location at Jalan Ampang is now occupied by the Petronas Twin Towers, a hotel, retail and residential, recreational and entertainment facilities.

The Jalan Ampang land was bought by businessman T Ananda Krishnan.

“We will only appoint one developer to undertake STC’s relocation plan.

“It is practical to let one developer do it rather than appoint too many players for this project,” Cham says.

“The new STC would need a minimum of 600 acres of land, which would come from the appointed developer’s land bank,” he added.

“If there’s excess of land after developing the new STC, the developer can build a golf course or a sports complex around the new STC.

“It’s totally up to the developer to decide what they want to do with the excess land,” says Cham.

Cham cites traffic congestion and the sunken land in its current premises to be major factors to relocate.

“We received a lot of complaints from the jockeys. During the rainy seasons, the tin mining land is dangerous for the jockeys,” he says.

“The current premise is too small for us to develop world-class facilities. We want STC to be a racing resort.

“We want to convert horse racing into a tourism sport. This is in line with the government policy to promote equestrian sports,” Cham says.

On Nov 24, STC placed an advertisement in a local newspaper calling for tenders on the proposed relocation from its current premises.

The closing date for developers to submit tenders has since been extended from Dec 23, 2003 to Jan 31, 2004.

Once the tender closes, STC would appoint a consulting company to look into the proposals for the new turf club.

“It would take us a few months to decide. We will also have to call for an extraordinary general meeting by March or April 2004 to get majority approval (on the relocation plans) from our club members,” Cham says.

“So far, feedback from our members have been positive,” he adds.
Under its club constitution, each member would get a 10,000 sq ft plot of land in the new STC site. STC has about 600 members.

Membership into STC is by invitation from its committee members.
In 2003, STC recorded RM800 million in total bets. Cham forecasts bets for next year will see a 10% increase to RM880 million due to a more favourable economic condition.

In 2002, total bets stood at RM500 million. STC takes 9.2% from the total bets.

It is learnt that based on total bets, STC contributed RM55 million and RM88 million in 2002 and 2003 to the government's revenue.

Sungai Besi? Is it visible from NS-highway? The only things I seem to notice at Sg Besi are that old airstrip and of course the Mines and Palace of the Golden Horses. ;)

Anyway, I'm more interested to know what's gonna spring up once the the Turf Club's moved out. Its predecessor at Jln Ampang indeed has an illustrious successor in the KLCC! :D

Berjaya Land Bhd subsidiary Selat Makmur Sdn Bhd has been selected for a RM640 million job to relocate and build the new Selangor Turf Club (STC) premises, says an STC official.

The official, who declined to be named, tells FinancialDaily that Selat Makmur beat seven other major property developers to the job in a tender exercise. It proposes to relocate the club to Rawang, along the North-South Expressway.

STC has put up advertisement notices in newspapers on an impending EGM on March 31 to consider and approve Selat Makmur’s selection.

Pursuant to the advertisement, the club proposes to sell the existing land in Sungai Besi to Selat Makmur for RM640 million to be paid for in land, buildings and cash.

STC will get a 300ha land in Sungai Tinggi, Ulu Sungai district near Bukit Beruntung in Rawang, together with a “modern leading-edge racecourse of international standards with ancillary buildings” to be built by Selat Makmur at a cost of RM605 million.

In addition, STC will receive RM35 million cash, while each club member whose name appears on its register as at March 31 will get sub-divided vacant lots of about 10,000 sq ft of land in the new site.

“It seems that the members are in favour of the deal. The new location is ideal for traffic dispersal,” said an STC ordinary member when contacted yesterday. Furthermore, the vacant lot of 10,000 sq ft is seen as a great offer.

On Jan 2, FinancialDaily, quoting STC’s deputy chairman Datuk Richard Cham, reported on STC’s planned relocation to an area north of Kuala Lumpur, along the North-South Expressway.

About 15 major property players were said to be eyeing the contract. Among them are Hong Leong Properties Bhd, Talam Corporation Bhd, MK Land Holdings Bhd and Berjaya Land.

The existing site has to be relocated because of traffic congestion in the area and unsuitability of the land for horse racing.

STC has been located on a tin mining land with a 90-year lease in Sungai Besi since 1993 when it moved from its previous Jalan Ampang site.

The previous location at Jalan Ampang is now occupied by the Petronas Twin Towers, a hotel, retail and residential, recreational and entertainment facilities. The Jalan Ampang land was bought by businessman T Ananda Krishnan.

Sultan of Selangor quizzes club over move

KLANG: The Sultan of Selangor has expressed displeasure over the reported plan to relocate the Selangor Turf Club (SLTC) from Sungai Besi, according to sources.

A palace official confirmed that three SLTC committee members were summoned to the palace for an explanation on the club?s move to Sungai Tinggi in Hulu Selangor.

The SLTC recently announced that among the reasons for shifting the racecourse was the traffic congestion in the vicinity on race days and the poor condition of the track, which sits on former mining land, during bad weather. .

At the club?s EGM in March, the ordinary members of the SLTC gave the go-ahead to move the club.

However, 27 members later signed a petition against the move and sought a court injunction to stop the relocation.

The injunction was dismissed and they have filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal.

The SLTC had announced that the Berjaya Land Bhd (BLand) had won the tender to build the new club in Sungai Tinggi.

BLand, through wholly-owned subsidiary Selat Makmur, beat 18 other developers in the open tender.

Selat Makmur will build a racecourse and ancillary buildings on the land at a cost of RM605mil and buy the Sungai Besi land for RM640mil.

The SLTC committee members could not be reached for comment.

Shah Alam stadium
What's great! the first that I can see for overviews. Not yet to start for Bukit jalil national stadium.

The Shah Alam main stadium is built of pre-cast post-tensioned concrete in which the seating bleachers double as structural spans. The maximum structural span is 80 meters. The stadium meets all Olympic standards and provides 80,000 seats and another 5,000 standing spaces. Three quarters of the seats are protected from weather by the space frame supported polymer roof. The roof is opaque to minimise the lighting contrasts for daytime television transmission.

The highest safety and security standards for crowd control were followed, with huge ramps for quick evacuation and a moat between the crowd and the playing field. Athletes, officials and VIPs have separate access and facilities at the lower levels. The latest intelligent facilities for the mass media and telecommunications made the stadium the most technically sophisticated in South East Asia.

Adjacent to the Main Stadium, the Olympic standard Indoor Stadium accommodates sports such as badminton and gymnastics. A seating capacity of 12,000 in four galleries overlooks the square arena. Towers for media coverage at each corner also anchor the roof. The green copper dome relates to the arcs of staircase/ramps outside the building, and the curves of the larger outdoor stadium.

No More Mega Sports Complexes, Says Azalina

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- The government will stop building mega sports complexes and instead focus on providing small and cheap community sports complexes to encourage mass participation said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman.

According to Azalina, there are enough mega sports complexes in the country to cater for the needs of the sporting entity.

The government does not want to be burdened with the huge expenditure's incurred for maintaining such complexes as the money can be used for other deserving purposes, she said.

"The public will certainly be angry with the government for spending large sums of tax payers money on such expensive complexes which are not utilised regularly compared to infrastructure for health services or hospitals.

"Furthermore, costs of maintaining these big complexes is very high while replacing the track, grass, repairing toilets could also incur huge costs," she said after a dialogue session with 300 sports leaders in Sabah.

She said in contrary to an earlier statement that community sports complexes would be built in every Parliamentary constituency, the government has now decided that each state constituency should have one.

"For a start, the government has decided that the first of such complexes be built in constituencies of Chief Ministers and Menteris Besar as they will become exemplary structures for the others," she said.

19-07-2004: BLand signs STC's RM650m deal

Berjaya Land Bhd (BLand) unit Selat Makmur Sdn Bhd (SMSB) has entered into a conditional sale and purchase agreement with Selangor Turf Club (STC) to acquire buildings and three parcels of leasehold land measuring 98.7 ha in Sungai Besi for RM640 million.

In a statement on July 19, BLand said SMSB would pay RM35 million in cash and transfer 302.4ha of freehold land together with a new racecourse and other amenities in Sungai Tinggi worth RM605 million within 33 months to STC.

For that purpose, SMSB is acquiring the 302.4ha land from Berjaya Group Bhd's (BGroup) wholly-owned subsidiary BerjayaCity Sdn Bhd (BCSB) for RM605 million cash. It also proposed to appoint BCSB as the turnkey contractor for the new turf club facility.

BGroup expected to earn a gross gain of at least RM140 million from the transaction. It will use the RM605 million proceeds to partly reduce borrowings, which totalled RM3.69 billion as at April 30, 2004.

For a country with 20 million ppl, Malaysia has got some of the best-looking stadiums in Asia! Very impressive.

Does Malaysia also have any football-specific stadiums?

Yup......there are two good examples:

1) Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium

2) Shah Alam Stadium (home to the Red Giants - Selangor State Team) - capacity 80,000

Although our all our outdoor stadiums have held important football matches, these two are specific examples of football being central to their creation ;)

Revive Shah Alam Stadium to its former glory

By BEN TAN

EVERY great football team has a turf to call their own. Popular English teams like Manchester United have Old Trafford and Liverpool have Anfield as their home grounds. For the Selangor team, the Shah Alam Stadium is the heart and soul of the Red Giants.

However, these days hardly anything happens at the stadium anymore and its impressive building is more often than not quiet.

The stadium, which is also a central component of the Shah Alam Sports Complex, looks dilapidated, as not much has been done over the years to enhance its façade.

This is a far cry from the days when the stadium was billed as the best in the country and even the region.

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2004/9/p3stadium.jpg

The Shah Alam Stadium was opened in 1994.

The facility, which opened in 1994, was once touted as the best stadium in the world. It houses a massive six-level semi-enclosed space spanning an area of 155,000 sq metres with a seating capacity of 80,000. The pitch measures 105 metres by 68 metres.

Ten years ago, the stadium was an impressive facility boasting state-of-the-art security, medical facilities and even a giant electronic scoreboard which was reputed to be the second biggest in the world at that time.

It also boasted the longest free-standing arc-shaped roof in the world. In addition to that it has an eight-lane Regupol track for track and field events.

The stadium was an expensive investment for the Selangor Government which spent RM460mil to build the structure.

Azhar ... ‘the stadium’s potential is still the same after 10 years’

Since its launch, it has successfully played host to a diverse range of events, including international and local sports events, major concerts, cultural shows, large outdoor displays and tournaments.

The Shah Alam Stadium is prominently positioned as the premier soccer venue in the country, being the “pride turf” for the Selangor football team and the venue for most FAM-organised (international standard) matches. It was even awarded the 1996 Asian Best Sports Facility.

In 1997, it played host to the World Youth Championship matches, which rank second after the World Cup in competitive soccer. This was followed by the stadium being one of the venues for the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

After that the stadium became the venue for various concerts, athletics competitions and Malaysia Cup matches.

Now, the stadium and its surrounding car park bays are used as a Sunday flea market and advanced driving course.

Local karting venue, City Karting, have their premises and full kart track in the car park bays.

The stadium is also used as exposition centres and some small motorsports companies even have their offices there.

Former journalist, Azhar Ghazali, who covered the opening of the Shah Alam Stadium about 10 years ago said it was sad that the facility had not turned out as promised.

“At that time, the management saw a lot of potential for the stadium, more so since it was also the home ground for the Selangor football team,” he said, adding that he was last at the stadium in 1994 for a Singapore versus Pahang match.

http://metro.thestar.com.my/news/2004/9/p3selangor.jpg

The Shah Alam Stadium is the heart and soul of the Selangor team, the Red Giants.

Azhar believed that the Shah Alam Stadium’s popularity began to tumble following the opening, in 1998, of the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex which became a popular choice for Klang Valley folk.

“However, I still think that there is potential for the stadium to be popular.

“What it needs is a good business team to organise and manage more events there,” he added.

Football fan Aznan Sharel said that he too was sad with the current state of the stadium as the place held sentimental value for him in 1994 and 1995 when the Red Giants were at their peak.

“Being a Red Giants supporter, I have not missed a Selangor match during that period. It was one of the most memorable times for Selangor football fans.

“When I pass by the stadium now, all I see is a greyish big wave that has gone silent,” said the 24-year-old who was sad that the stadium had become a white elephant.

Aznan believes that the state of the stadium now has something to do with the Selangor football fans.

“Where are the supporters of the Red Giants now? The stadium doesn't even have a banner proclaiming it to be the home of the Red Giants,” he said, adding that if Selangor staged a comeback, the stadium stood a chance of becoming a popular venue.

Shah Alam City councillor (Zone C) Datuk Seri Indah di-Raja Abu Bakar Abdul Hamid said the state government understood the potential of the stadium but was awaiting a full handover of the facility from a previous management company.

“The day-to-day running and management of the stadium is still under the control of this company and we (MBSA) are awaiting a full handover from them even though their lease has expired.

“Once the handover is complete, MBSA will hopefully develop the stadium as we still see potential in the facility for world-class events,” he said,

i think the "sails" at bukit jalil is a great idea - efficient and effective! should be used much more often in urban areas in m'sia! and shah alam stadium is really nice, but it's such a shame that it's always been underutilised and after only 10 years, it's already deteriorating.

1. many people say bukit jalil (another beautiful stadium) has become a "white elephant" but clearly it has played a role in making shah alam stadium a "white elephant" - what do people think of this? stadium australia which hosted the sydney 2000 olympics also has a similar problem now - become a "white (at least grey) elephant". a stadium that was built to be the world's largest stadium in the 1960s in melbourne's outer east, Waverley Park, was recently demolished for housing recently without ever being completed (its maximum capacity was i think about 90,000 but not sure).

2. brings me to my next issue - stadium merdeka - an important part of m'sia's heritage/modern history. what happened to the plans for its demolition and redevelopment? clearly it is in a bad shape - what can or should be done about the situation, or do you favour demolition? in fact, many foreign websites and travel books say that TAR declared merdeka in dataran merdeka - which is not correct, in fact, only the british flag was lowered in dataran merdeka and replaced with the m'sian flag (does anyone remember how did the name "jalur gemilang" come up, which was quite recent?)

3. maintenance of public and even private buildings (like many hotels that are beautiful when they open but no maintenance) seems to be a problem in m'sia - is that a fair comment, what do people think?

I just want to hear opinions and stimulate some debate - please don't be offended! :D

I think you're referring to the 'stretch membrane' which is prominently used at the National Sports Complex. These stretch membrane are very expensive and usually they involve precision engineering to have em stretched to cover whatever they need to cover. That is the reason why its adaptation had been slow although it is very practical in the hot climate of ours. Furthermore, stretch membrane need very little maintenance which is great for lazy bum owners! :D

Nevertheless ....more and more such stretch membrane structures are erected city-wide recently and even one 'mamak' has it! :D

As for Shah Alam Stadium......it could be blamed to the authorities and the company which manages it for its neglect. No matter how great a structure is - once neglected......it would deteriorate fast. So I just hope that the Selangor govt would live up to their words of keeping the stadium in top shape in the near future ;)

Well.....many people don't realised that the fact the stadium hasn't been a white elephant after the Commonwealth Games. It had held numerous events since then and regularly, it host many school sports and concerts as it isn't expensive to rent it. ;)

It may not be fully booked every day and night but it is being used by numerous event and some of these events managed to fill up all 100,000 seats like the Evangelical Gathering organised by the Council Of Churches of Malaysia a few years back. :)

I am not too sure about Stadium Australia (Telstra Stadium now) take-up but when I last visited there a few years back, the tour guide said that it had only held like a few major events so far and nothing even in smaller scale. Maybe that had changed I dunno :?

On to Stadium Merdeka.....well......there is a thread in our forums not too long ago which many forumers had stated their opinion on wether it should be demolished for Plaza Merdeka but unfortunately the thread could have been deleted after remaining dormant. :(

ANyway many here in the forums would like to see the stadiums be preserved - both Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara. There's even a public outcry a couple of years back when Renong wanted to demolish the stadiums to built Renong City (later renamed Plaza Merdeka). The govt stepped in and assure that these historical jewels wouldn't be demolished. Judging from my last visit there not too long ago, Stadium Merdeka needed a new coat of paint and a little sprucing up...nothing major - it is nevertheless is still a busy venue. Recently we've seen Mariah Carey and Linkin Park performing there ;)

Yea....you're right that Tunku Abdul Rahman did declare and proclaim our independence at Stadium Merdeka and not Dataran Merdeka. Dataran Merdeka as you've pointed out is just a symbolic lowering of the Union Jack and the raise of the Malaysian Flag (now named the Jalur Gemilang).

Jalur Gemilang came if I am not mistaken back in 1996 ....or izzit around the time Datuk Mansor Azhar did the solo circumnavigation .......I forgot but not too long ago there is an article in the papers on the origin of the name. All I know is that it is known as Jalur Gemilang only in the late 90s :D

I would blame it on the authorities regarding this issue. Yea.....the law and enforcement played a big role in regular maintenance and the mindset is just secondary (although it did played a mojor role).

Buildings and anything man-made (even some natural surfaces) tend to deteriote faster in the harsh tropical climate of Malaysia. They are battled with heavy rainfall and much exposure to humidity and sunshine which makes even the best and most durable coat of paint wore off in a couple of years. Even my ex-secondary school had been repainted 5 times in 10 years! :D

This is in contrast to buildings in temperate countries which is generally easier and need less maintenance. So that brings us to focus on the only Equatorial tropical city in this world which had good maintenance culture - Singapore ;)

Singapore is a very good example of good maintenance. But one just can't force Malaysian to emulate Singapore as we are not as wealthy to begin with. A sizeable city-state are much easier to maintain compared to the many cities that are found throughout Malaysia. But of course law and enforcement in wealthier cities like George Town or Kuala Lumpur could be stepped up to ensure building owners to renovate or to repaint in some cases. IMO Malaysians just can't be subjected to the draconian way the Singaporean authorities did to shophouse owners there. So I think it would be sometime before we see some really good maintenance culture here - we need to prosper first :D

Anyway most big companies are usually good at maintaining buildings......hmmm......which are the hotels you're referring to as most hotels I know of are properly maintained.......of course I supposed you're referring to well-established hotels rather than some dingy and sleazy ones ;)

With the Selangor stadium built in 1994, why did they build the Commonwealth stadium? Excuse my ignornace I'm not from Malaysia. I've always admired the Commonwealth stadium, but had no idea there was another giant stadium in the region. Where does the Malaysian national football team play? What about cup finals and league games? What are the crowds like? It's amazing that Kuala Lumpur has two such impressive stadiums (as well as the Merdeka).

Well......the Selangor State Govt had plans in the early 90s to create a sports hub at Shah Alam. So they had Stadium Shah Alam and Stadium Malawati built for that purpose.

Our National Stadium are built by the federal govt within the official boundary of Kuala Lumpur and it is part of the National Sport Complex......a far larger and more comprehensive complex of stadiums and arenas dedicated to most sports.

The reason why building another sports complex or another huge stadium so close to another is because Shah Alam is the capital for the state of Selangor. Officially it is also another city in another state. It is just so happen that Kuala Lumpur's expansion had sort of like 'swallowed' up Shah Alam thus making it part of Greater KL or as most Malaysians prefer to call - Klang Valley.

Thus.....having a huge sports complex and a huge stadium at the disposal of the federal govt is so much better than using a stadium owned by the Selangor State Govt which had all the exclusive rights to the Shah Alam Stadium. The Shah Alam stadium is the home ground / home stadium of the Selangor Football Team. Pardon my ignorance on football but I am not too sure which team calls our National Stadium 'home' :D But most of the football leagues and cups are held at any of these large stadiums. Mostly nowadays have their finals at the National Stadium as it is the best equipped stadium in all of Malaysia ;)

Batu Kawan stadium safe

NIBONG TEBAL: The RM110mil Batu Kawan stadium is not sinking and is not in any danger of collapsing.

State Youth and Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Datuk Jahara Hamid refuted claims that the stadium had suffered structural defects due to massive soil settlement since its completion in 2000.

She also refuted claims that the stadium, built for the Sukma Games 2000 when Penang played host, was a white elephant because it was under-utilised.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2005/1/19/nation/p28gap.jpg

A gap between railings in the stadium caused by soil settlement at the Batu Kawan stadium in Penang seen Tuesday.

“There are no structural defects although the soil is settling in some parts of the stadium premises. However, the main structure is intact although there are some hairline cracks.

“The Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP), which is managing the building, will do some repair work soon.

“We will spend about RM1.5mil in repair work which includes plugging leaks in the building,” she said after inspecting the stadium with MPSP president Md Aris Ariffin yesterday.

Jahara said the stadium was built on a strong foundation and the only affected areas were the pavements where concrete piling was not done during construction.

She said MPSP would re-compact the topsoil in areas where there was soil settlement before relaying the interlocking slabs.

“Repair works will be carried out as soon as possible and the scheduled Premier League next month will go ahead,” she added.

On why the stadium with a 40,000 seating capacity was under-utilised, Jahara said the structure was built for the future because Batu Kawan would be a massive township with about 20,000 houses within 10 years.

She said the state government would discuss with MPSP to encourage schools and organisations to use the stadium.

Md Aris said the council spent RM1.2mil annually to maintain the stadium since it took over the management of the place in April 2003.

Malaysia To Host 2006 FEI World Cup Final Jumping
June 02, 2005 16:52 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will join the international ranks in the world of equestrian sports when it becomes the first country outside Europe and the United States to stage the 2006 International Equestrian Federation (FEI) World Cup Final Jumping next year.

Asiapromote Ventures co-principal Wan Zaleha Radzi said this is an honour for the country, after 26 editions of the World Cup since its inauguration in 1978.

She said the event will give riders in this region an opportunity to compete at the world level.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our young riders and national riders not just to watch the ultimate event live but to compete in special classes in the world's most important equestrian event.

"This event will also be a catalyst for our riders to pursue excellence," she said at a press conference after the official launch of the 2006 FEI World Cup Final Jumping by Tourism Minister Datuk Dr Leo Michael Toyad in Seri Kembangan near here Thursday.

Wan Zaleha said the event will also change the landscape for equestrian sports in the region as more riders will enter the sport in the hope of qualifying for a place in the World Cup Final.

As the host country, she said, Malaysia will be able to nominate two riders in the World Cup Final, paving the way for Malaysians to compete at the international level in the equestrian sporting arena.

"As this is a skill-based sport it is not impossible for our riders especially the young riders to aim for an Olympic medal," she added.

The 2006 FEI World Cup Final Jumping will be held at the Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur from April 26 to 30 next year.

This event will feature the best 51 riders and over 100 horses from 71 countries.

Malaysia to host World Cup Final

A SUCCESSFUL OUTING: Wan Zaleha Radzi (front left), Peter Imran Winton (right)
and other members of the team who made a successful bid for the final in Las Vegas.

MALAYSIA continues to be the preferred venue for staging world-class sports events. The latest sport to choose Malaysia is equestrian.

Malaysia will also be the first Asian country to host the FEI World Cup Final Jumping, the world’s most prestigious individual show-jumping competition.

The 2006 FEI World Cup Final Jumping is scheduled to be held at the Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur from April 26-30 next year.

Malaysia’s hosting of this milestone in equestrian sports successfully breaks the monopoly of Europe and the United States on the event over the past 27 years.
The selection of Kuala Lumpur as the 2006 World Cup Final venue fulfils one of the FEI’s (world equestrian federation) objectives in widening the appeal of equestrian sports outside Western Europe and the U.S.
Asiapromote Ventures, organiser for the FEI and the Equestrian Association of Malaysia of the World Cup Final, attributes the international body’s confidence in Malaysia to the huge international impact of the CSI 5 Star KL Grand Prix.

Peter Imran Winton, Asiapromote Ventures’ co-principal, says the experience gained from organising the CSI 5-Star KL Grand Prix in 2003 and 2004 - rated as one of the top five equestrian shows in the world - was a decisive factor in FEI awarding the 2006 KL World Cup Final Jumping to the firm.

Although Winton accepts that the balmy Las Vegas desert setting for this year’s event will be a hard act to follow, he is confident that visitors will be wowed with KL’s “Jungle in the City” concept. “We have promised the FEI the best final ever, and we know that Malaysia can deliver.

“This is an incredible opportunity for the development of equestrian sports in Asia, and the ideal platform to make it a popular sporting activity for everyone,” believes Wan Zaleha Radzi, Asiapromote Ventures’ other co-principal.
“The KL 2006 World Cup Final Jumping will spur equestrian sports in the region as more riders vie for a placing in next year’s event,” she explained.

The FEI World Cup Final Jumping is the highest level of all equestrian competitions with participants contesting to qualify in 13 world leagues comprising more than 50 nations and attracting thousands of spectators from around the globe.

Part of our history
Monday August 29, 2005
By NG WEI LOON, Photos by CHUA KOK HWA

PERMODALAN Nasional Berhad (PNB) chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid was not at the stadium to witness Tunku Abdul Rahman's cries of “Merdeka!” But, the moment struck deep in his heart. To this day, it still does.

“As a 19-year-old, I heard Tunku's declaration over Radio Malaya in Tapah, my hometown,'' he said.

“Three days later, I made it a point to visit Stadium Merdeka when I arrived in Kuala Lumpur to study at Universiti Malaya.''

Stadium Merdeka, said Ahmad Sarji, was one three independence declaration sites.

“The other two were Bandar Hilir in Malacca (where Tunku announced a date to declare Malaysia's independence) and Dataran Merdeka where the Union Jack flag was lowered at midnight and the Malaysian flag was raised,'' he said.

“As a symbol of our independence, Stadium Merdeka has to be conserved and preserved to its original design,'' said Ahmad Sarji, adding that his greatest fear was a lack of patriotic values among the younger generation.

“Stadium Merdeka is part of our history,'' he said. “The soul of the nation lies in our heritage and legacy. Without the past, we have no present. Without the present, we have no future.

“The disrespect and disregard for the stadium is frightening. The dignity of the site has to be protected.

Tunku cried 'Merdeka' in 1957 (below).

“We do not want our future generation to be dispirited.

“We want them to fight to preserve the stadium. That will be the least that they can accord to our Father of Independence.”

In 2001, PNB acquired 13.08ha of Kuala Lumpur's prime land, comprising Stadium Merdeka, Stadium Negara and Changkat Pavillion, from United Engineers Malaysia Berhad through Pengurusan Danaharta Nasional Berhad.

Now, PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd manages the stadium.

“I was outraged when I heard that the stadium was to be demolished for development. If it did, it would have been a national tragedy.''

Ahmad Sarji, who is also Badan Warisan Malaysia (Heritage Trust of Malaysia) president, said plans were being made to build an interpretive centre-cum-museum to commemorate Tunku's memorable declaration, besides other significant events that took place in the stadium.

“The stadium should be utilised for sports and cultural activities,'' said the former sportsman who is currently Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation president and Malaysian Malay Cricket Association deputy president.

Ahmad Sarji treasures the nostalgic sports moments. “The Merdeka Football Tournament, initiated by Tunku to commemorate Malaysia's independence, was Asia's important sports event then,'' he recalled.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2005/8/29/central/m_03p_cauldron.jpg

The fire cauldron was built
for the 1989 SEA Games.

“I would even have my dinner and supper at the stadium when the games were played until midnight under the floodlights.''

Ahmad Sarji has fond memories of seeing Datuk Abdul Ghani Minhat, Edwin Dutton and Mokhtar Dahari in action at Stadium Merdeka. The others were international stars Kevin Keegan, Tom Finney and Diego Maradona.

He also remembers events that made history at the stadium. One in particular was the 1975 World Hockey World Cup semi-final match between Malaysia and India. “The stadium was packed to the brim in the pulsating match,'' he said.

“Though we lost, the fans loved the national players who played their hearts out,'' said Ahmad Sarji whose birthday falls on Sept 16 – the same date as Malaysia Day's birth.

Penang to host world c’ship
Saturday November 12, 2005

PENANG will be hosting the biennial World Club Crew Championship 2008 that features dragon boat races.

The championship, which is expected to last for four days, will see the participation of some 50 to 100 foreign teams involving more than 2,000 people.

Penang International Dra-gon Boat Festival (PIDBF) chairman Lai Chiew Hock, who led a delegation for the bid in Berlin, Germany in August, said a seminar for dragon boat technical officials would be held in March next year to ensure that Penang had sufficient trained personnel.

“There will be an examination for these officials and those who passed it will obtain a certificate.

“The certificate will enable them to sit for an international examination by the Dragon Boat International Federation in June next year.

“They have to pass the examination before they can be allowed to act as officials, “ said Lai.

Last year, the championship was held in Cape Town, South Africa, while the next one will be in Canada.

Promoting rugby in KL
Wednesday December 7, 2005

Players from Serdang Ex-Angels celebrating after winning
the recent Datuk Bandar Cup Rugby Sevens.

THE Kuala Lumpur Rugby Union (KLRU) have embarked on a programme to promote rugby in the city.

KLRU president Mohamed Amin Nordin Aziz said they would be organising an inter-parliament constituency Rugby Sevens for youngsters in Kuala Lumpur.

“We are hoping to work with KL City Hall to organise this competition in conjunction with the Federal Territory Day celebrations,” Mohamed Amin disclosed during the recent Datuk Bandar Cup Rugby Sevens held at Padang Merbok.

“KL City Hall has organised a similar competition for football supported by the MPs.

“Likewise, we expect the MPs to support rugby sevens as well.''

He said it was important to promote rugby among residents in the city and to recruit local talents for development programmes and national competitions.

In the past, KL did not have enough players to field in the KLRU League and had to recruit from other states. For national competitions like the Agong's Cup, these players have to return to their home states.

Mohamed Amin commended the Serdang Ex-Angels for winning this year's Datuk Bandar Cup Rugby Sevens. In the final, Serdang Ex-Angels, comprising former students of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), whipped the Kuala Lumpur Dragons 22-0.

The Serdang Ex-Angels, led by Syed Saifuddin Syed Mohamed Zin, scored two tries in the first half through Mohamed Saiful Mohamed Nor.

In the second half, Mohamed Faizal Zainal Abidin and Khairul Azhar Mohamed Nor each scored a try while Mohamed Faiz Samsu Khidir made the conversion for a 22-0 score.

Serdang Ex-Angels' Mohamed Faiz was voted Best Player of the competition.

As champions, Serdang Ex-Angels collected RM2,000 while KL Dragons received RM1,000.

In the Under-21 category, KL became the champions after a convincing 31-10 win over Atma. Sahoca KL won the Division One title following a 14-7 win over Pulapol.

Malaysian Rugby Union (MRU) president Datuk Seri Syed Razlan Jamaluillal gave away the prizes to the winners.

The Perak Turf Club is the custodian of a Perak racing tradition dating back to 1886 when the first meeting was held at Taiping, then the state capital.

Ten years later, according to available records, the Kinta Gymkhana Club held its first meeting at Batu Gajah with the running of the Perak Derby.

Ipoh was a fast-growing at the turn of the century and the Ipoh Gymkhana Club was started in February, 1913. In due time meetings at Batu Gajah faded out and Ipoh became the main centre of racing, although the Perak Gymkhana Club and Taiping Turf Club were to carry on racing at Taiping for many years until the Japanese invasion.

Racing in Ipoh gained immense popularity and in 1926 the Perak Turf Club (PRTC) came into existence. Although the PRTC carried on racing throughout the Japanese Occupation, it has the same rehabilitation problems as other clubs after the war. But facilities were back to pre-war standards by 1951.

The late Dato Yeoh Cheang Lee became the first non-european chairman of the club in 1960 and it was largely due to his vision and leadership, and subsequently his successor (in 1982) Tan Sri V. Jeyaratnam, the present chairman, that the PRTC flourished and achieved many 'firsts' in the annals of local racing.

Today, the PRTC races on a fine racecourse, the backdrop of which is the Gunong Korbu, one of the highest peaks in the main range of Peninsula Malaysia.

The main classic race in Ipoh is the Coronation Cup run over 1,600 metres.

The other two main attactions are the Perak Derby, at 2,400 metres the longest race in the Malaysia-Singapore circuit, and the Sultan Gold Vase, the only event run over 1,100 metres on the straight course.

Malaysia readies for World Cup
By YIP YOKE TENG
Tuesday March 28, 2006

WHILE the F1 heat lingers on, a massive effort to organise another international event is going on and is set to make Kuala Lumpur erupt with vibrancy again in April.

More than 100 of the world's best performing horses, 52 top riders chosen from 61 participating countries and a 40,000-strong audience including royalty and dignitaries will be in town for the FEI World Cup Jumping Final 2006.

Malaysia is proudly the first Asian host. The event, which is the most important and prestigious in the FEI calendar, has never been held outside Western Europe and the United States in its 28 years of history.

It is scheduled for April 26 to 30 at Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil. Patron Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said are expected to be present.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2006/3/28/central/m_pg07horseshow.jpg

A file photograph showing Putra Stadium laid out with the Malaysian-made
footing mix during the KL Grand Prix international horse show.

“The success of Malaysia in organising one of the top five shows in the world, KL Grand Prix international horse show, in 2003 and 2004 has given FEI the confidence to award us the rights,” explained the organiser, Asiapromote Ventures managing director Wan Zaleha Radzi at the company's premises in Damansara Heights.

Riders and horses participating in the world cup final will double the number seen in the grand prix. Among the members of royalty attending the event are The Infanta Dona Pilar de Borbon from Spain, who is also FEI president, Princess Benedikte from Denmark and Princess Haya Al Hussein from Jordan.

It will be televised worldwide through 20 channels, including BBC and CCTV.

Over 200 international equestrian and general sports magazines, as well as 300 websites on related fields will be covering the event.

Besides receiving thousands of visitors from local and overseas and ensuring a flawless flow as the world watches on, organising the World Cup also means transforming the entire Putra Stadium into a world-class show jumping arena and an enormous quarantine centre with more than 100 stables.

The stadium has to be emptied two weeks before the event to set that up.

And at the same time, they have to transport 100-odd horses, each worth millions of ringgit, from Europe and the United States.

“The logistic of transporting the horses is one of the biggest challenges. Even though they compete every week at different places, this must be one of the furthest, requiring them to be on the plane for at least 24 hours. They will also double the number of horses from South East Asia which came for the grand prix,” said Wan Zaleha.

The organiser needs to follow strict quarantine procedures. Horses from different countries cannot be mixed together. Cleanliness has to be ensured at all times. Ventilation and temperature must be perfect to make the horses comfortable in our hot and humid weather.

That is only for horses competing in the world cup final. Another 60 to 70 horses are expected to come from Malaysia and other Asian countries for the KL Grand Prix Series.

The KL Grand Prix Series, which includes Young Riders Series, Asian Classics and KL Grand Prix Tour, is held concurrently to give riders from the east the chance to be with the world's best.

With stables up, the organiser has to look at the footing.

“Footing is a big issue. In the past, some riders had refused to compete because the footing wasn't satisfactory. Bad footing can hurt their horses, and riders will lose a lot of money if their steeds can’t compete in the next game,” she explained.

A combination of sand, fibre and gel will be laid as the footing. The organiser is recycling the material weighing 500 tonnes used at the previous grand prix.

“Perfect. That was the word used by some riders to describe our footing mix proudly made in Malaysia. It attracted a lot of attention, many countries showed interest in the recipe,” she said.

On top of all this, FEI has decided to hold its general assembly here since it is the first time the world cup final is held in Asia.

An organising committee headed by former Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Musa Hitam has been set up, but more are expected to be involved.

“The beauty of Malaysians is that everyone comes forward to help make an international event a success,” Wan Zaleha said, adding that several associations will expose the lesser-known horse heritage in the country while the police and army will take charge of security.

It was earlier revealed that Asiapromote budgeted about RM2mil for advertising and promotion. Overseas road shows started in April last year to disseminate the fact that the event is going to be held in an exotic country for the first time.

A finely made promotional video depicting Malaysia’s rustic splendour and urban vibrancy has been aired in many countries, too.

In fact, promoting the event overseas is easier than doing it here.

“We are not promoting football and badminton, but equestrian sports, something the general Malaysians think is only meant for the elite,” she said.

“We hope to expose Malaysians to the world of horses. It is not just about riding, it is also associated to a lucrative industry with lots of job opportunities,'' Wan Zaleha said.

About the FEI World Cup
Tuesday March 28, 2006

THE FEI World Cup Series was founded in 1978 as an indoor circuit by well-known Swiss journalist Max Ammann. It gave professional riders the chance of competing all year round.

The first edition began with only two leagues – from Europe and North America, where show jumping was well established.

Currently, the World Cup circuit has 13 leagues with 115 qualifiers and 2,000 riders from around the globe.

Only 50 top riders and 100 horses from around the world qualify for the World Cup final.

In 2006, the World Cup final in Kuala Lumpur will be the first ever to be held outside Europe and the USA.

The South-East Asian league was created in 1997. Only one representative from this league can be selected for the World Cup final each year. As the host in 2006, Malaysia has the right to field two extra competitors and they are Syed Omar Almohdzar and Qabil Ambak from Kuala Lumpur.

For Malaysians, tickets are priced from RM10 to RM60. Those interested can contact Asiapromote at www.klworldcupfinal.com or Ticket Axcess at 03-7711 5000 or log on to www.axcess.com.my.

Renovations aim to restore Merdeka Stadium to what it was in 1957.

The stadium is undergoing massive renovations at a cost of RM2million and will sport the 1957 look. PNB have undertaken the task to restore, preserve and conserve the stadium where independence was proclaimed by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the country first prime minister.

PNB chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid said the organisers of the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup had requested for the use of the stadium to host this year’s competition.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/6/8/central/02paint.jpg

No simple task: Even the paintwork is being tailored to match the original.

“They also want to celebrate the country’s 50th Merdeka anniversary by having the competition at the historic Merdeka Stadium. We are pleased to give them the honour,” said Ahmad Sarji.

Merdeka Stadium was also the venue where Malaysia was proclaimed in 1963. It was also the venue for many sporting events including the Merdeka Tournament, the 1975 World Cup hockey final and the 1989 SEA Games.

Ahmad Sarji said PNB had acquired Merdeka Stadium, Stadium Negara and the surrounding area for residential and commercial buildings.

“But we were flooded with enquiries from the public. The interest from all quarters was a big surprise. The 1957 independence proclamation is a subject of interest to many. PNB wants to preserve both the Merdeka Stadium and Stadium Negara as heritage buildings.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/6/8/central/03merdekastad.jpg

Almost done: A photographic progress report showing the
original grandstand (top) and the conditions at the stadium now.

“Secondly, both Merdeka Stadium and Stadium Negara were venues for many historical sporting and cultural events,” said Ahmad Sarji.

Work on the restructuring of the Merdeka Stadium was initiated after Kuala Lumpur City Hall approved the development plans. The Merdeka Heritage Trust Foundation, headed by Ahmad Sarji himself, will be responsible for the restoration project.

Ahmad Sarji said they were lucky as they managed to get the original plans and drawings of Merdeka Stadium, which was built in 1956.

The then Public Works Department deputy director Stanley Edwards Jewkes headed the Merdeka Stadium project. Jewkes was not an architect but a civil engineer but the Englishman was personally asked by the Tunku to design the stadium.

Ahmad Sarji said they were able to get in touch with Jewkes, who was helpful in many ways.

“Jewkes provided us with a lot of photographs and details pertaining to the original stadium. We also had the original drawings of the stadium,” said Ahmad Sarji.

As per the original stadium, the track would be removed, the podium where the Tunku proclaimed “Merdeka” seven times will be restored at the exact spot.

“The actual seating arrangements for the Rulers, the Queen’s representative and other officials would be restored. We are taking all steps to have the paintwork similar to that in 1957. We also have found a time capsule but there was nothing magical in it.

“The grand stand will be similar to that in 1957. We have also demolished all other structures like the seating area opposite the grand stand and both sides. However, the stadium will be subject to a stress test to determine that it will be safe.

“Another reason why we are restoring the original venue was to rekindle loyalty and patriotism in the heart of the younger generation. The younger generation will have the opportunity to enjoy the Aug 31, 1957 atmosphere.

“The youngsters must value and appreciate Merdeka Stadium. Historical buildings are easy to destroy but difficult to preserve.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2007/6/8/central/02vistand.jpg

Clear view: Victoria Institution can now be
seen from within the stadium grounds.

“Merdeka Stadium has a soul and it must not be destroyed or forgotten,” said Ahmad Sarji.

However, Ahmad Sarji admitted that it would be difficult to restore Merdeka Stadium fully.

“It will not be easy for us to get the PA System used in 1957. In the process of restoration, some features like the kiosks were destroyed but we can build it. The main pavilion, two VIP rooms and changing rooms will be back to their original state,” said Ahmad Sarji.

The Merdeka Stadium will be handed over the Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry in mid-July. The contractors are working round the clock to ensure that work is completed by then.

Architect: Nothing Beats Restoring Nation's Icon -- Stadium Merdeka

By Alan Ting

KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Bernama) -- No other building is more important than Stadium Merdeka where the proclamation of the country's independence took place on Aug 31, 1957, Lawrence Loh, a conservation architect, says emphatically.

That is the measure of his passion when it comes to describing his current RM2 million conservation work undertaken together with Badan Warisan Malaysia (BWM) or the Heritage Trust of Malaysia.

His primary objective is to put Stadium Merdeka, which he regards as a national icon, back to its former splendour.

Loh, who is also BWM deputy president, whose motto is "Giving our past a future", is a leader in the field of building conservation in Malaysia. His expertise is often sought by private clients, government agencies as well as international organisations.

One of the highpoints of his work has been the recognition given by UNESCO for a conservation project led by him on the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion in Penang.

Also known as the "Blue Mansion", it was acknowledged as the "Most Excellent Project" in the inaugural UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards in 2000 when the more than a century-old building was restored to its former glory and it later turned into a boutique hotel.

Three years later, Loh was involved in the restoration of the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple in Melaka, the oldest temple in Malaysia. He won the "Award of Merit" at the UNESCO Asia Pacific Awards that year.

On top of that, UNESCO has included Loh on its panel of conservation experts in Asia to enable him to act as a resource person for the body's comprehensive list of activities and programmes.

"Stadium Merdeka is the benchmark of the nation's architecture," he told Bernama.

Describing it as "Building No 1", Loh said this was where the nation's birth took place and this naturally made it a heritage landmark.

"It cannot be another place," he stressed, describing the efforts of Tunku Abdul Rahman, the country's founding father and first prime minister to have Stadium Merdeka built on a slope of a hill as akin to planting a seed on the ground for the nation.

"He could have built a 20-storey building but why a stadium? It's because it's all about sports and recreation.

"It's the place where Malaysians from all walks of life, especially the poor and marginalised, can come to enjoy themselves and have recreation," he said.

Loh continued: "Sport is the common denominator which brings everybody down to the same level. And what Tunku did was a form of a statement in terms of modesty and humanity rather than grandeur or self-promotion.

"Everybody always wants to find a reason to have memorial for their legacy. However, Tunku's legacy was just a hole in the ground. Architecturally, it was a humble way of expression and at the same time it was one of the biggest projects in Malaya at that time."

Loh said Stadium Merdeka took 18 months to complete and it was a "very good engineering feat" as far as he was concerned.

Explaining the rationale for restoring Stadium Merdeka back to its original form, he explained that in terms of heritage expression, one has to look for the most culturally and historically significant building.

"To me, the most historically significant is Stadium Merdeka because the Declaration of Independence of Malaya (later Malaysia) was held here."

"Basically, Malaysia attained its nationhood from here. In order for it to be an icon in our national heritage, we have to bring it back to what it looked like originally. So when people come, they still can look at it like it was at that time (in 1957)," he added.

This, he believed, would evoke memories of the country's first Independence Day, particularly with Malaysia celebrating its 50 years of nationhood this year.

"We need a very strong symbol and icon to promote the idea of conservation. What would be the strongest icon other than Stadium Merdeka itself?" he asked.

For example, he said if one were to ask Americans if the Statue of Liberty, an American icon, could be replaced with a high rise building, the public there would surely object and would even describe such a suggestion as insane.

"I want the people (of this country) to start understanding the iconic power of Stadium Merdeka," said Loh.

He revealed that what got him working on the Stadium Merdeka restoration project going was a poll he undertook himself among the younger generation.

He was shocked to learn that many young people did not have the faintest idea as to what Stadium Merdeka stood for, why was it built and who had built it.

"That moved me a lot. That means that we have now lost a sense of history, of where we had come from, how Malaya was born and how it (eventually) became Malaysia," he said with a tinge of sadness.

He believed that every school child, should once in their lifetime, get on a bus, train or plane and come to Stadium Merdeka and "be told about the history of Merdeka."

The Stadium Merdeka restoration project was scheduled for last November but got delayed until March this year as many people initially did not understand the need for its restoration.

Undeterred, Loh plodded on eventhough many had asked him to leave the stadium alone as it was built half a century ago and even questioned why was there a need to bring it back to its former glory.

"The battle of conservation is the battle of the hearts and minds. It's our job to convince people what our objectives are and why we have to conserve," Loh stressed.

Plans for new turf at PJ stadium
Thursday November 29, 2007

Bad state: Subramaniam showing a part of the
damaged turf at the Petaling Jaya Hockey Stadium.

THE Petaling Jaya Hockey Stadium is in bad shape and in need of a new turf.

Built about 15 years ago, the stadium has not been used for hockey competitions for the past two years as the turf has worn out. The Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) had inspected the turf and had not given their approval for the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to register the stadium as their home venue for the MHF Junior League two years ago.

MBPJ councillor P. Subramaniam said it was sad that the stadium was in such a state and that it was time for the council to lay a new turf.

“I have been receiving calls from hockey enthusiasts regarding the hockey stadium. They want to know why a new turf is not laid. Schools in the Petaling District have to travel to Klang for their training sessions,'' said Subramaniam after a visit to the stadium.

The hockey stadium is located opposite the Assunta Hospital. Since it was built, the stadium had been the training centre for the Petaling District Schools Sports Council (MSSDP) programmes as well as competitions.

The Selangor Hockey Association (SHA) had also utilised the stadium for their league.

Early last year, the MBPJ had listed the stadium as the home venue for the MHF League and MHF Junior League. But the MHF technical committee, after inspecting the turf conditions, refused to sanction the stadium as a venue for the league.

Subramaniam said he had raised the matter during the MBPJ finance committee meeting last month.

“We were informed that it would cost about RM2mil to lay the new turf as well as repair the stadium. Although the amount quoted is big, we cannot afford to let the stadium lie unused. Hockey has been classified as a core sport and it is important that we have a hockey stadium with proper facilities in Petaling Jaya,'' said Subramaniam.

SHA secretary G. Tamilselvam said they were prepared to manage the stadium.

“In fact, we offered to share the cost of laying the turf. The SHA is prepared to seek financial assistance from the state government. Students and hockey enthusiasts in Petaling are deprived of the facilities at the stadium as the turf is worn out and not suitable to play on,'' said Tamilselvam.

Subramaniam said the MBPJ could also request for funds from the Sports Ministry.

“But more importantly, the stadium must be maintained well. One reason for the deterioration is poor maintenance,'' he said.

Round-the-clock work on stadium
Wednesday January 30, 2008
By BAVANI M. and FAZLEENA AZIZ
TheStar

The Federal Territories Day is on Friday, and in Kuala Lumpur, a big celebration is planned for what KL residents still fondly refer to as City Day. Workers and contractors are now working round the clock to spruce up the Cheras football stadium in Bandar Tun Razak for the big day.

WORK to spruce up the Cheras football stadium for the Federal Territories Day celebration on Friday is going full steam.

Contractors and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) workers are now busy cleaning and sprucing up the stadium and the surrounding area.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is scheduled to launch the celebration at 8pm on Friday.

When StarMetro visited the site early this week, a DBKL truck was spotted unloading fresh marigolds and red celosia plumosia plants, and green shrubs to be used for the decoration for the celebration.

Facelift: A worker giving the Cheras football stadium a fresh coat of paint

According to Zakaria Radzi, 38, from the local authority’s landscape department, hundreds of the marigolds and celosia plumosia flowers and greens are being used to decorate the stadium, both indoors and outdoors.

“The combination of red, yellow and green will certainly perk up the entire place,” Zakaria said as he sprayed water on the plants.

Over at the stadium’s main stage area, workers were busy building a makeshift wooden platform to be used for the VIP seating.

About 20 workers from Naza Entertainment were spotted installing equipment for operating the giant LCD screen and several smaller screens at strategic areas inside stadium.

A Naza spokesman said that they were also preparing to set up the fireworks for the event, which would be one of the highlights for the celebration.

A team of 15 workers from a company called Soundimension were seen busy setting up speakers, mixers and amplifiers around the stage area.

Outside the stadium, workers were seen putting up banners and buntings. The main road leading up to the stadium, meanwhile, has been decorated with multi-coloured lights.

According to Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ab Hakim Borhan the 34th Federal Territory (FT) Day celebration will be a grand affair in Kuala Lumpur.

“Much effort has gone into preparing a series of colourful events for this year's celebration, the theme of which is Wilayah Persekutuanku Gemilang (My Glorious Federal Territory). This will the fourth year that all three FTs – KL, Putrajaya and Labuan – will be celebrating the event together.

“There will be 21 events happening in KL including eight new programmes. The ‘Love Kuala Lumpur' events will be held from Jan 31 until March 30,” he said.

Hakim added that RM1.3mil had been allocated for the celebration in KL alone.

“The main objectives of the events are to instil love, togetherness and integration, allow the people to meet with their local leaders as well as to give an opportunity for the public to participate in sports, cultural, arts, civic and spiritual activities.

“We hope that everyone will come and participate in the programmes arranged throughout the celebration,” said Hakim.

He also said that prior notice would be given on road closures involving the event.

The celebration will begin with a thanksgiving (kesyukuran) ceremony on Jan 31 at all the KL local mosques from 6pm.

This will be followed by the FT Day launching ceremony on Feb 1 at the Cheras Football Stadium from 8pm to 11.30pm and the launch of the FT Day Festival 2008 on Feb 2 at Titiwangsa Lake Gardens from 8am to 6pm.

About 20,000 people are expected to attend the launch on Friday night.

Throughout the festival, sports carnival, fishing competition, golf tournament, musicalvanganza, kickboxing, musical theatre, netball, treasure hunt, tennis, KL X Games, cycling, futsal and the AmBank Kuala Lumpur International Marathon will be held.

To participate in the sports events, contact Yazid Rahim at 03-2617 6296 or Shamsulbahri Salasim at 03-2617 6301. For the cultural events call, Borhan Abdullah at 03-2617 6308 or Azman Yahya at 03-2617 6295.

Merdeka Stadium Restoration To Be Ready Middle Of Next Year
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 31 (Bernama) -- The Merdeka Stadium will have its original look when it was built more than 50 years ago when restoration work on the stadium is fully completed in the middle of next year.

To date, 70 per cent of the overall restoration process had been completed, said Tan Sri Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, the chairman of the Merdeka Heritage Trust Foundation, which is responsible for managing the stadium.

"We have decided to complete the restoration work so that the stadium will have almost 100 per cent of its original look when it was completed in 1957," he told reporters after launching the book "Malaya: 500 Early Postcards" at the Malaysia Heritage Trust, here Wednesday.

Ahmad Sarji, who is also the president of the Malaysia Heritage Trust, called on members of the public to donate whatever they could to the Malaysia Heritage Trust which was set up by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).

The construction of the Merdeka Stadium, which was mooted by the first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, was completed in August 1957 at a cost of RM2.3 million, and was used for the declaration of the country's independence on Aug 31, 1957.

The council said it has lost millions of ringgit operating the two stadiums and is thinking of surrendering them to the state government.

The council revealed that it is losing up to RM2 million a year maintaining Shah Alam Stadium, Malawati Stadium and Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre.

Shah Alam councillor Ahmad Sayutzi Bashiron said most of the council members feel that the sports complexes should be given back to the state government.

"The council can't go on incurring losses with no financial help from the state government." said Sayutzi.

"The council is losing a lot of money maintaining the sports complexes and there is no allocation from the state government. At the moment. Shah Alam taxpayers are paying for the sports complexes.

"The council has to fork out about RM20,000 a month just to take care of Shah Alam Stadium's grass carpet and its other facilities."

Sayutzi said the council spends more than RM5 million annually to maintain the sports complexes.

"The council collected about RM3 million in revenues from the sports complexes. We have to bear a loss of RM2 million."

Sayutzi said when the sports complexes were first built, they were under the state government before a private company took over.

"But the private company failed to maintain it, and the sports complexes were given to the city council for maintenance," he said.

Sayutzi said prior to the general election in March, there was a proposal that the state government take over the three sports complexes through its wholly owned subsidiary company, Permodalan Negeri Selangor Berhad.

"However, after the general election, the matter was never brought up again," he said.

Recently during a budget meeting, councillor Izham Hashim said the city council could maintain the stadia and other sports complexes in Shah Alam if the state government sets aside a grant for it.

"The council is in the midst of negotiating with the state government on the fate of the sports complexes.

"Stadium Shah Alam is not generating income for the council and its maintenance cost is too high," he said.

Izham said other than the three sports complexes, the city council is also managing the newly-built Shah Alam Royal Theatre in Section 14.

Stadium Merdeka awarded Historic site recognised for conservation

KUALA LUMPUR: The historical Stadium Merdeka here was given the “Award of Excellence” in the 2008 Unesco Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conser*vation after successfully being restored to its full glory.

Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the award meant a lot more than just celebrating its restoration as the stadium was where nationhood was proclaimed and represented national unity.

The award was presented to Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) chairman and Badan Warisan Nasional Malaysia president Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid by Unesco special adviser to the deputy director general of culture Richard A. Engelhardt.

The ceremony was witnessed by Shafie at the stadium yesterday.

Home ground: Mohd Shafie (second from left) talking with Ahmad Sarji (second from right) and Engelhardt after the presentation yesterday. Looking on is PNB president and group chief executive Tan Sri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman.

PNB bought over the stadium in 2000 and has since cooperated with Badan Warisan Nasional to carry out preservation efforts on the iconic landmark.

“I appeal to those in the private sector to take initiatives to help preserve other heritage sites in Malaysia,” he said, adding that the move would be a useful corporate social responsibility programme.

Asked to comment on the multi-lingual signboards in Penang which were vandalised, Shafie said the ministry had expected it to happen.

“The issue shouldn’t have been played up in the political arena in the first place,” he said.

Shafie said that when he was on the official visit to Uzbekistan with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi recently, he hardly understood the language and had trouble getting around.

“But as tourists, we should take the initiative to learn the local language,” he added.

MBSA faces huge financial burden in maintaining sport facilities
SALINA KHALID at the MBSA full board meeting

THE Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) is literally at a loss when it comes to the question of maintenance of the sports complexes and facilities in the city.

Both the Shah Alam Stadium and the Melawati Stadium are landmarks in the capital city but the cost of their maintenance and operation is increasingly becoming a big financial burden to the MBSA.

Both facilities are not generating sufficient income to cover the cost of upkeep.

"If it is just the ringgit and sen, yes the city council is at the losing end"- MAZALAN MD NOOR
But Shah Alam mayor Mazalan Md Noor said the main problem was not just about ringgit and sen.

“If it is just the ringgit and sen, yes the city council is at the losing end. But we have to consider many other aspects in having the stadiums. It is for the people and it is only appropriate for Shah Alam as a capital city to have such facilities,” he said.

Mazalan said this when replying to questions posed by some councillors during the MBSA full board meeting on Tuesday on the maintenance cost of the two stadiums.

The councillors had said that the staduims should be surrendered to the state government as the cost of maintenance was too high for the MBSA to handle.

In addition to the two stadiums, the MBSA is also managing the Aquatic Centre and the newly completed Shah Alam Royal Theatre in Section 14.

The MBSA has to spend about RM5mil annually to maintain the sports complexes. About RM20,000 is needed monthly just to take care of the Shah Alam Stadium’s grass carpet and its other facilities.

The MBSA manages to collect only about RM3mil annually from the complexes, which means it is losing RM2mil each year.

Asked whether the sport complexes were a burden to the MBSA, Mazalan said: “In terms of money, yes it is a burden. So we are hoping that the state government will help us out.”

Mazalan said a paper would be submitted to the state government early next year, asking for financial assistance in the form of a grant to cover the high maintenance cost of the sport facilities.

Ministry To Turn NSC Complex Into Sports City
February 24, 2009 17:12 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Youth and Sports hope to go ahead with its plan to turn the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil into a Sports City despite the economic crisis.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the proposal was still in the planning stage.

"We hope the Sports City will become a hub for all sports and not just a few selected sports," he told reporters after announcing the Malaysia International Sports and Trade 2009 (MISET'09) here today.

Ismail Sabri said the Ministry had earlier set up a committee to set up a Sports Museum as part of the initiative.

"The committee chairman Datuk Wira Mazlan Ahmad and the members are currently gathering articles or exhibits from ex-national athletes or their family members like legendary footballer, the late Mohktar Dahari to be displayed in the museum," he said.

Ismail Sabri added that a number of sports venues like the Panasonic Sports Complex (Matsushita Stadium in Shah Alam), Jalan Duta Hockey Stadium and the Jalan Duta National Tennis Centre would also come under the purview of the Ministry from March 1.

"In future, the Ministry will solely manage and administer all sports complexes while the National Sports Council's role will be to train athletes while the National Sports Institute takes charge of sports science," he said.

The idea of setting up a Sports City was mooted during the National Sports Convention held in November last year but the Ministry has yet to determine the budget for the purpose, he said.

Meanwhile, the two-day inaugural MISET to be held on June 26-27 and organised by the GK Group and the Malaysian Athletes Welfare Foundation, would see more than 30 countries exhibit and promote high quality and state-of-the-art sports equipment.

"Through the exhibition, Malaysia will become a hub for sports facilities and research, especially with the involvement of universities," he said.

Plan to redevelop Kajang Stadium
Stories by GEETHA KRISHNAN

KAJANG residents will have to bid adieu to the Kajang Stadium if the proposed Kajang Square project takes off.

The plan is to redevelop the stadium into a 2.52ha multi-million ringgit sports complex with futsal and badminton courts, field for tai chi, yoga and aerobic activities, a children’s playground and kiosks selling various wares.

The RM4.5mil project would mean the sacrifice of an iconic structure built in the late 1970s. The Kajang Stadium is a prominent landmark as it is located smack in Kajang town. Its main entrance faces Jalan Kelab while the back portion looks out to Jalan Cheras leading to the bustling Jalan Besar.

In its heyday, many important football league and club matches, involving the likes of celebrated legendary football players Mokhtar Dahari and M. Chandran in action, were played at the stadium to capacity crowds.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/3/24/central/m_02stadium.jpg
Historical landmark: The Kajang Stadium has persevered through many decades and seen some important football matches.

Athletic meets, community events and election rallies are still being held there, albeit on a smaller scale.

According to sources from the Football Association of Selangor (FAS) and event organisers, the stadium offers affordable rates.

The Kajang Square idea first surfaced in 2000 when the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) announced that it had regeneration plans for the stadium, alongside suggestions for a Riverine Park, Satay Food Court and Satay Museum as a town-centre tourist attraction.

After a five-year lapse, it was proposed that the stadium, described as under-used, be turned into a public square where people could jog or enjoy a stroll.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/3/24/central/m_01kajangstadium.jpg
Modest landmark: The Kajang Stadium is located smack in the centre of Kajang town.

MPKj president Datuk Hasan Nawawi Abd Rahman told the media recently that the project would be revamped to feature a different layout and modern facilities, to be presented again to state or federal authorities for approval.

“We are striving to offer sports and leisure facilities under one roof for individuals and families. The Kajang Square project will also draw more tourists to Kajang,” he said.

The Selangor Economic Action Council (MTES) has given the green light for the project (State gives green light for project).

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/3/24/central/m_02plan.jpg
In the pipeline: A detailed plan of the proposed Kajang Square project

Kajang state assemblyman Lee Kim Sin has termed the Kajang Square project as a grandiose scheme.

“I disagree with the concept of centralised facilities when the present ones need upgrading. There is a serious lack of green spaces in the new housing estates and more facilities can be offered in the older neighbourhoods,” Lee said.

“The Bangi sports complex about 15km away is centrally located and well-equipped with facilities. Hence, there is no need for a similar facility in Kajang,” Lee told the StarMetro.

He said pointed out that traffic congestion was also a serious problem, given the Kajang Stadium’s location.

Although parking is available at the Kajang Stadium, the bays are shared between the Dewan MPKj, Bangunan Datuk Nazir and the Medan Satay Kajang. The Kajang Uptown bazaar is also held in the vicinity on Fridays and weekends from 10pm to 2am.

Lee also made references to the Satay Museum and Kajang Point, two projects under MPKj which he viewed as pure wastage of public funds.

The RM1.2mil museum project was stalled in 2001 and was only revived after an additional RM1.6mil was pumped in.

The Kajang Point, with food stalls and souvenir kiosks, was built in 2004 and was only opened recently as part of the proposed RM1.8mil Kajang Waterfront project along the stretch of the Langat River near the stadium. The Kajang Point has yet to attract the crowds.

Behind schedule CM tells Sukma XIII contractors to speed up
Wednesday April 15, 2009

Site inspection: Mohd Ali (second from right) visiting the construction venue
while state Public Works and Utilities Committee chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo
(centre) looks on in Malacca recently.

MALACCA: Contractors involved in four Sukma XIII projects here have been given a month to speed up works.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said that those who failed to comply would be terminated and replaced by new contractors.

Mohd Ali said that work on the lawn bowl turf, swimming pool, squash court and windsurfing facilities in Pengkalan Balak, Alor Gajah was behind schedule.

“The delay is not due to insufficient funds but because of problems between the main contractors and their sub-contractors,” he told reporters after a site inspection at Stadium Hang Jebat in Krubong recently.

Mohd Ali said that six facilities were under construction on 55ha at a cost of RM60mil. They are expected to be completed by January 2010.

He said that work on hostels for athletes was on schedule and the track for equestrian events was completed.

Some 7,000 athletes and officials would take part in the games in May 2010 and 40,000 spectators were expected, he added.

Thursday June 4, 2009

GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has instructed state Youth, Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Lydia Ong Kok Fooi to inspect a stadium in Malacca before sending Penang athletes there for the Sukma next year.

“We have to make sure that the stadium is safe as we do not want to risk the lives of our athletes.

“If the stadium is found to pose any danger, then we would not be sending our athletes to participate in the event,” he told a press conference after launching the slogan and billboard countdown for Sukma XIII Malacca 2010.

Lim was commenting on the collapse of the roof of Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak on Tuesday.

In Petaling Jaya, the Malaysian Institute of Engineers has voiced concern over current newspaper comments about the collapse of Jaya Supermarket and the stadium roof collapse.

The institute said that such reports might be misleading as proper investigations had yet to be done.

Repair work on stadium to cost RM9mil

JOHOR BARU: About RM9mil will be needed for maintenance and repair work on the Larkin Stadium.

Such an amount was needed as the stadium was one of the oldest stadiums in the country, requiring periodical inspections and maintenance work to ensure no mishaps occurred, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said

“The stadium is more than 20 years old.

“We need to take into consideration the wear and tear of the stadium all these years.

“I noticed the roof and other public amenities needed repairs as well as following an inspection of the stadium,” he told a press conference recently.

Ahmad Shabery added the joints on the stadiums roof struts were showing signs of rust and would be replaced if necessary.

The media room ceiling was also on the brink of collapse, and the track and field also needed maintenance work.

Ahmad Shabery also said the grandstand seating area at the Larkin Stadium would be temporarily closed to public until the Public Works Department’s forensic team examined the zinc roof and its supporting struts.

“We will not be taking any chances with public safety especially after the stadium in Terengganu collapsed,” he said.

by Johor Sports Council’s director Ismail Rahman (left) on the Larkin Stadium’s
problems yesterday.

THE grandstand area of the Larkin Stadium in Johor Baru has been closed with immediate effect pending repairs on its roof.

Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek, who inspected the stadium yesterday, said the move was a precautionary measure after a visual check found rust covering parts of the connecting beams of the roof structure.

"It must however be stressed that the move is not a declaration that the structure is not safe but rather just a precautionary measure.

"The Public Works Department's forensic team will inspect the structure and decide accordingly," said Ahmad Shabery.

The forensic team will determine whether the roof only needs repairs or has to be replaced.

"The closure of the grandstand area of this stadium is part of our effort to ensure that the incident in Kuala Terengganu is not repeated," Ahmad Shabery said, referring to the collapsed roof structure of the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium early last month.

The Larkin Stadium roof was last refurbished 18 years ago.

RM9.0 Million Facelit For Larkin Stadium
July 06, 2009 17:10 PM
By Dan Guen Chin

JOHOR BAHARU, July 6 (Bernama)-- The grandstand area at the Larkin stadium has been ordered closed with immediate effect as the authorities are preparing a RM9 million face lift for the 45-year old structure.

The fear of the roof over the area collapsing has prompted Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek who made a one-hour inspection of the stadium, built in 1964, to tell the Stadium Board authority to cordon off the grandstand area.

It's a case of rather be safe than sorry.

"But I am not saying that the roof is in danger of collapsing anytime now. But after the tour where we noticed that the steel structures supporting the grandstand roof have corroded badly. We including the Johor Executive Councillor for Sports, Jais Sarday and the director of the Johor Sports Council(JSC), Ismail Rahman decided that it's best we take pre-emptive measures, just in case.

"I am sure all of us do not want a repeat of the Kuala Terengganu State Stadium episode two months ago where the roof collapsed. But luckily no lives were lost," said Ahmad Shabery.

The Forensics department of the Public Works Department has been called in to make an in-depth study to determine whether the roof structure is safe or not.

"Until the result is out, we will not allow anyone to go near the grandstand area. But sports activities including M-League matches will go on as usual because the other areas are not affected," added Ahmad Shabery.

The Sports Minister also said that the cause of the corrosion could be due to wear and tear because it has been seventeen years since the roof over the grandstand was built for the 1992 Malaysia Games (Sukma), which Johor hosted.

He added that he had been briefed by the JSC on their plans to give the stadium a new look, which could cost an estimated RM9 million.

"The JSC are talking about a new running track; a new pitch complete with a new drainage system; a new press room and of course a new roof over the grandstand.

"As Sports Minister I am in favour of the proposals because I feel Johor Bahru has the potential to become an international sporting hub and to do so, you need better sporting facilities," he added.

Reliving the past with Merdeka Stadium
Its doors will open for events in December or January

http://www.mmail.com.my/sites/default/files/imagecache/large/stadium_3.jpg

THERE is a fervent attempt to bring the glory back to Merdeka Stadium. And PNB chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji wants to start with staging the Merdeka Tournament annually.

"The stadium will be ready by November. We're looking at opening its doors either by December or perhaps early January," said Ahmad Sarji, also chairman of IIUM and Lawns Bowls Association of Malaysia.

"We want national sports associations to talk to us. We want them to bring their events back. It would be fabulous if the FA of Malaysia organises the Merdeka Tournament where it all started - at Merdeka Stadium."

Merdeka Stadium holds special meaning to the country. It was built for the declaration of Independence on Aug 31, 1957. It was later turned into a sporting hub, hosting a series of events including the Muhammad Ali vs Joe Bugner clash on July 1, 1975, the 1977 SEA Games and the annual Merdeka Tournament.

It also saw concerts by, among others, the late King of Pop Michael Jackson, Kool and the Gang, Celine Dion and Linkin Park.

Modernisation took its toll on Merdeka Stadium and Stadium Negara, a stone's thrown away. It was almost torn down but due to a public outcry, plans to redevelop the land were shelved. Then came along PNB, promising
to upkeep all 14 acres of the land housing the stadiums and developing the surrounding 19 acres - ranging from posh residential areas to business plazas at a gross development value of RM3 billion.

"PNB is the owner but the stadiums are entrusted with the PNB's Merdeka Heritage Trust Foundation.

"The first phase of restoration works was to commemorate the 50th Merdeka celebrations in 2007. Now we're into our second phase and have spent around RM8.5 million to give Merdeka Stadium its original look," added Ahmad Sarji.

The restoration works will include the construction of the saluting platform at the grandstand, retaining walls, minor repairs and a scoreboard complete with State emblems - almost like what the stadium looked like when it was built.

The upper terraces have been torn down and as such, the seating capacity is now reduced from 45,000 to 20,000 - just as it was in 1957. Also gone is the running track.

Stadium Negara, meanwhile, will house a sports library, a gymnasium and a gallery celebrating historical
feats achieved at both Merdeka Stadium and Stadium Negara.

"We're got plans for Stadium Negara. Let's keep that for another day," Ahmad Sarji said. Merdeka Stadium was awarded the 2008 Unesco Asia-Pacifi c Heritage Award of Excellence and was declared a National Heritage by the Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry earlier this year.

"National stadiums are objects of pride with history. Sadly, many are under-utilised. It is now up to the NSAs to approach us and make use of the facilities.

"They should know the number of spectators expected in the preliminary rounds and the critical stages. Merdeka Stadium is in the heart of town, has ample parking space and excellent public transportation.

"If organisers want to relive past memories, if they want reasonable prices to host a reasonable crowd, then Merdeka Stadium is the place for it," Ahmad Sarji said.

PRIDE: Ahmad Sarji with the awards given to Stadium Merdeka

WHY not? That was the immediate reaction from FA of Malaysia (FAM) deputy-president Datuk Seri Redzuan Sheikh Ahmad on utilising Merdeka Stadium as the main venue for football events, including the Merdeka Tournament.

“Obviously, the field must be of international standard as we host international teams. That aside, I feel it would be wonderful to have the matches at Merdeka Stadium,” said Redzuan.

Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PNB) chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji has urged national sports associations, including FAM, to use Merdeka Stadium when it opens its doors again by the end of this year.
Redzuan said the reduced seating capacity would not be a problem.

“We know when there will be fans and when there isn’t going to be a large crowd. We can also use two or more stadiums and shift the venues once the numbers get larger, which would normally be during the more critical stages of a tournament,” added Redzuan.

Merdeka Stadium staged a string of football activities. It saw the likes of the late Mokhtar Dahari, Santokh Singh, Dollah Salleh and national coach K. Rajagobal play on the field.

“We couldn’t organise the Merdeka Tournament and Intercontinental Cup this year due to the swine flu.

“There’s still plenty of time for next year’s edition. Who knows, if all goes well it may be a good idea to use Merdeka Stadium as the venue,” Redzuan added.

Stadium history

MERDEKA STADIUM was constructed in 1956 for Malaysia’s declaration of Independence on Aug 31, 1957.

From its original capacity of 20,000, the stadium was later able to fit 40,000 people and running tracks were included, turning it into a multi-sports facility.

Merdeka Stadium hosted a series of sports, cultural and arts activities, including the 1965 and 1971 SEAP Games, 1977 and 1989 SEA Games, national athletics meets, the annual Merdeka Tournament, the memorable Muhammad Ali vs Joe Bugner heavyweight title clash, a number of concerts including German rock band Scorpions, the late King of Pop Michael Jackson and Hong Kong stars such as Leslie Cheung and Aaron Kwok.

STADIUM NEGARA was declared open on April 10, 1962 by our third King Tuanku Syed Putra. It was the scene of several world badminton triumphs, including the Thomas Cup victory of 1992. It too held several concerts, including Santana in mid-70s, and Disneyland shows.

CHIN WOO STADIUM is anotherfamous landmark in the area. Built in the 1950s by YT Lee, the stadium was a favourite badminton and aquatics hub. It remains so today as it is located in the heart of town. National swimming championships were mostly held there.

KB sports complex delay queried
Published on: Sunday, August 23, 2009

Kota Belud: Sabah DAP questioned the reason behind the six-month delay for the sports complex upgrading project here.

Its chief Dr Hiew King Cheu, together with Dr Edwin Bosi, went to the site following requests from the local people to inspect the project, which is next to the Federal House and Paradise Camp.

"It is very surprising to learn that the project is way behind schedule as much as six months, and it is now not even half finished," he said here, Saturday.

Based on the project signboard, works commenced on March 1, 2008 and is due for completion on March 28, 2009.

"What is the reason for the delay? It should have been handed over six months ago," he said, adding that the people here needed the facilities for their sporting activities.

He said the people here urged the Government to be serious and step up their action to make sure it can be completed as soon as possible.

Plan to redevelop Kajang Stadium
Stories by GEETHA KRISHNAN

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/3/24/central/m_01kajangstadium.jpg

Modest landmark: The Kajang Stadium is located
smack in the centre of Kajang town.

In the pipeline: A detailed plan of the
proposed Kajang Square project

Penang Sports Council to promote sports tourism at meeting
Saturday September 26, 2009

THE Penang Sports Council will hold a presentation on ‘Sports Tourism’ to Tourism Promotion Organisation (TPO) members at the General Assembly Promotion Organisation for Asia Pacific Cities in Kota Kinabalu on Sept 28.

State Youth, Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Lydia Ong Kok Fooi said 130 local participants would be taking part in the general assembly from tomorrow to Sept 30.

“The assembly is an effective platform to promote sports tourism in the Asia Pacific region,” she told a press conference yesterday.

She also said the TPO, with its headquarters based in Busan, South Korea, was established to give focus on the tourism sector marketing efforts by members which indirectly helps enhance a member country’s economy.

“Four cities in Malaysia – Ipoh, Kota Kinabalu, Malacca and Penang – have become TPO members in an effort to promote their respective tourism sectors,” she said.

She added that the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) was roped in to appoint the hotel industry, MATTA, Chef Association, government agencies and the private sector involved in the tourism industry to become ‘industry members’ and play an active role to promote the state’s tourism sector.

This year, however, the MPPP appointed the state sports council to become the ‘industry member’ and represent Penang to promote international-level sport tourism events for 2010 and 2011.

RM9.6m for sports facilities
Wednesday October 14, 2009
By NIK NAIZI HUSIN

KUANTAN: The Pahang government has been allocated RM9.6mil under the 10th Malaysia Plan to build new football fields and upgrade existing fields in all districts.

State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Wan Adnan Wan Mamat said the land for each new field was estimated to cost between RM80,000 to RM100,000.

The upgrading would be done on existing fields, including the building of drains to ensure the fields were not water-logged, he added.

He said the Government had also constructed community fields in all state constituencies under the 9th Malaysia Plan for locals to use for sports activities.

All were completed except for 14% which faced land-acquisition problems, he added.

He also said the fields would be cared for by youth associations and village committees to ensure they were fully utilised and well maintained.

“People have complained about the lack of sports facilities and said that this was one of the reasons for the host of unhealthy activities, including illegal racing.

“Residents will now have the fields where they can exercise or play football,” he said, adding that, hopefully, the next generation of national football stars would be found here.

New badminton stadium opens in Bandar Sri Damansara
Thursday October 22, 2009 By NG WEI LOON

Women shuttlers from the Shing An Association of Selangor and Federal Territories had the privilege to play at the newly set-up S7 Badminton Stadium in Bandar Sri Damansara for their annual one-day shuttling outing recently.

Hall supervisor Paramasivam Perumal said the group competed in the social tournament for free.

“It was a refreshing change for them to gather at a new location. We supported the recreational programme because they have been hosting the event for the past seven years,” he added.

After successfully managing five futsal courts at Wangsa Maju in Setapak for five years, Paramasivam ventured into setting up the 14 rubberised courts including two VIP courts to cater to the social badminton players.

“We took almost three months to complete the construction by transforming the rundown futsal centre into the new hall. Since beginning operation in mid September, we have been receiving constant enquiries about the facilities available. For the first two weeks, we conducted free testing sessions for our potential customers. So far, the response has been encouraging,” Paramasivam said.

For the upcoming year-end school holiday, they are also planning to line up programmes for the youngsters.

Two coaches — Jason Wong and Chan Chee Mun — from two separate coaching stables are expected to draw up their respective training regimes for the trainees.

On weekdays, they are also offering affordable rates during the off peak period for the students. Court rental is at RM8 per hour between 9am and 1pm.

For peak hours, they have fixed their rate at RM50 for each of the specific two-and-half-hour session.

Former national shuttler Wong will also be running the pro-shop at the hall.

‘Promote paralympics’, says Najib

Voluntary organisations, the corporate sector and disabled athletes should
work together to promote the paralympic movement, said Prime Minister
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

KUALA LUMPUR: Voluntary organisations, the corporate sector and disabled athletes should work together to promote the paralympic movement, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said Malaysian sports leaders were playing significant roles in the Asean, Asian and world paralympic movement.

“This is in recognition of Malaysia’s capabilities in championing the paralympic movement,” he said.

Asked whether Malaysia would host the Paralympic Games, he said that if the country were to do so, it would have to be chosen for the main Olympic Games, “which is a tall order”.

Sticking together: Hong Kong athlete Yu Chui Yee accompanying Sidkova
Marketa from the Czech Republic at the opening of the 14th International
Paralympic Committee general assembly and conference in Kuala Lumpur
Thursday.

“It will not happen in the foreseeable future. You have to be a strong sports nation, make an impact and be a force to be reckoned with at the global level to be considered,” he said at the opening of the 14th International Paralympic Committee general assembly and conference here yesterday.

The United Nations estimates that there are about 500 million persons with disabilities in the world, the majority in developing countries, he said.

“The marginalisation of persons with disabilities is prevalent and in many countries there are few sports opportunities available to them,” Najib added.

On a brighter note, he said there had been increasing support for the participation of persons with disabilities over the past 20 years.

In line with the 1Malaysia concept of “People First, Performance Now”, Najib said it was important to provide opportunities for people from all walks of life, regardless of race, culture and religion.

Baiki bumbung stadium ambil masa

KUALA TERENGGANU 6 Dis.

Tuaran: The return of horse/pony racing to Tambalang after 30 years will stimulate economic growth and tourism in the district, said Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor.

Hajiji, in expressing this confidence, urged the people not to be too judgmental by harping on the negative issues related to horse/pony racing.

"Don't think about gambling but think about the many positive aspects with the re-opening of the racecourse in Tambalang," he said at the soft launch of the Tambalang racecourse, Saturday.

First of all, he said the weekly racing activities at Tambalang would create economic spin-offs for the people as they would have the opportunity to set up stalls to cater to the patrons.

Secondly, he said it would also complement the Government's efforts to attract more visitors to Sabah.

"This racecourse is of international standard and with the effort of the Royal Sabah Turf Club (RSTC) to improve the horse/pony racing standard in Sabah it will definitely attract tourists who like to see such races.

"And as the tourists come to Tuaran they will surely spend their money in the district," said Hajiji who is Assemblyman for Sulaman.

He said thirdly, the opening of the racecourse would also provide job opportunities to the local community.

He suggested the RSTC make full use of the huge area of the racecourse to also promote polo.

Describing the first day of racing on Saturday as a "historic" day for the people in Tambalang and for the RSTC, Hajiji said as the Assemblyman for the area, he was thankful to the State Government and Diriwan Corporation for allowing RSTC to utilise the facility.

The Tambalang racecourse was built during the Berjaya era but was used for only a year before it was abandoned and racing activities were shifted back to Tanjung Aru.

The State Government then leased out the racecourse to Diriwan Corporation in order for it to operate 4D outlets in the State until 2013.

Hajiji said that since the RSTC's former race track in Tanjung Aru was affected by the expansion of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) the Government had to think of ways to accommodate them.

"This is the caring State Barisan Nasional (BN) government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman," he said, adding that the CM had also constantly asked those involved on "when racing will start again and now we have started it".

Hajiji was confident that the RSTC management committee under the chairmanship of Datuk Golkhan Hasbullah would be able to draw up a comprehensive development plan to boost horse/pony racing activities here.

"Hopefully, it will be another tourism attraction for Tuaran and we hope the people will give their support," he said.

Earlier, Hajiji witnessed the handing over the mock key by Diriwan Corporation General Manager, Joseph Lin to Golkhan to symbolise the handing over of the management of the Tambalang racecourse to RSTC.

Also on hand were State Secretary, Datuk Sukarti Wakiman, Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary, Datuk Yusoff Kassim, Kiulu Assemblyman, Datuk Louis Rampas, Tuaran District Officer, Awang Shamsi Jamih and District Police Chief, DSP Suhaimi Haji Wiro.

Seven races were held on Saturday, with the main highlight being Race Four (Class II/III - 1200m) for the Datuk Hajiji Noor's Challenge Cup that was won by Boy Bolong followed by Roman Empire, Tamparuli Star and Hong Kong Crystal.

Meanwhile, RSTC will be making various strategies and plans to ensure the club remains progressive and relevant in the future.

Chairman, Datuk Golkhan Hasbullah said among the strategies was the revival of horse/pony racing activities in Tambalang here.

He said the RSTC management committee had agreed to accept the deal with Diriwan Corporation to rent the facility. At the same time, Diriwan also agreed to build the second and third racing track in the near future.

Towards this end, Golkhan expressed the RSTC management committee's gratitude to the State Government to allow the club to conduct its activity in Tambalang as well as to Diriwan for refurbishing the building.

He was confident that the revival of activities at the Tambalang Race Course would bring about positive impact to the local communities and the horse/pony racing industry.

EARTH BREAKING: Johari works at the levers to symbolically break the earth with Safri looking on behind him.

KUCHING: Satok will have its own Sporting Complex in 2011 with two FIFA certified futsal courts within.

Apart from that it will also be equipped with a multipurpose court for volleyball, sepak takraw, basketball and tennis.

The complex will also have leisure facilities like a 250m jogging track, baths with dressing rooms, canteen, offices and ample parking spaces.

“This will be the first such facilities to be built in this (Satok) constituency as part of the urban development programme to create a green area for this neighbourhood,” said Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg during the earth breaking ceremony at Jalan Muhibbah here yesterday.

Joining Johari for the ceremony was Lembaga Amanah Muslimin Kampung Patingan (LAMKP) chairman Dato Sri Safri Awang Zaidell.

Johari, who is also Satok assemblyman, said there would be many such facilities to be built in housing areas in the constituency, also to promote green neighbourhood and healthy lifestyle.

According to him, Satok Sports Complex will cost RM1.5 million and completion is set for middle of 2011.

Phase One will see the building of the two Fifa standard futsal courts with toilet facilities and fences while piling for the main building will be in progress.

Phase One is expected to complete in six months.

Phase two will see the completion of the complex in the middle of 2011.

The project is a joint effort of LAMKP and Satok Community Sports Club, following the signing of an MOU on Aug 11 which Johari witnessed.

KUCHING: Sarawak will face their first test of the new Malaysia League season when they entertain Police in their Premier League opener at Sarawak Stadium here at 8.15pm tonight.

Coach Mohd Zaki Shaikh Ahmad said although nothing much was known about the strength of their opponents, he was confident that his boys would go all out to secure an opening win.

“Judging from the intensive training sessions and friendlies played in Semenanjung Malaysia, I believe they will give their 100 per cent … they are very eager for action,” he said in a press conference yesterday.

According to Zaki, he would be fielding the best line-up, which would include former national striker Efendi Malik and Zamri Morshidi upfront.

“We will field our best eleven in our first match tonight and use either the 4-4-2 or 4-4-1 formation, with our attack spearheaded by two strikers,” he said.

The former national coach said apart from the two experienced strikers, Sarawak also had two young strikers in Mohd Hadera Bakri and Azralan Azmi.

“The four strikers will be given the chance to change partners when we find the best combination,” he said.

“Although our strikeforce is not so formidable now, I do believe that they can polish their finishing touches,” he added.

Zaki said the defence would be manned by Mohd Fadly Kassim, Wong Sai Kong, Firdaus Morshidi, Mazwandi Zekeria and former national youth goalkeeper Mohd Suffian Abdul Rahman.

“We are not facing any problem in the defence as I believe that the experienced defenders can play their respective roles well,” said Zaki.

In midfield, Zaki will probably field Abang Mohd Za’afari Abang Othman, Rafiz Abu Bakar, Mohd Dzulazlan Ibrahim and Mohd Fareez Tukijo.

Two members of the squad, Mohd Shahrol Saperi and Mohd Hairol Moktar, will not be seeing action as they are nursing injuries.

“However, I am very sure that our team will give their full focus and attention for the whole 90 minutes of play and entertain our fans and supporters who are expected to flood the stadium tonight.” he said.

Meanwhile, FAS FMG Sdn Bhd director Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki said Sarawak, who comprised mostly last season’s President Cup players, had begun to mature as a team.

“Players like Shahrol, Azizan, Mazwandi who are all under 21 years old, have matured into better players and I strongly believe they can give a good account of themselves this season,” the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) secretary said.

“Given one or two years, I am confident Sarawak will become a strong team to be reckoned with in the Malaysia League,” he added.

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 25 (Bernama) -- Sabah are expected to build an international rugby stadium, the first of its kind in the country, under the 10th Malaysia Plan (RMK-10).

"We want to turn Sabah into 'The Land Of Rugby' and hope to produce more quality rugby players in the country," Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek told reporters after chairing a meeting at his ministry here Thursday.

Ahmad Shabery said the initial aim was to prepare a prominent team to prepare for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil as the sport, featuring a sevens competition would be hosted for the first time in the Olympics.

He added that Malaysia had the potential to be among the top 10 rugby powers in Asia.

Meanwhile, the Aquatic centre in Kuching, Sarawak, would be completed by 2011 since 14 percent of the work has been completed, he said.

"Once ready, the ministry hopes the centre will produce excellent swimmers and continue to be an avenue for unearthing talented young swimmers.

"Right now not many Sarawakians are able to showcase their talents," he said.

Sukma clashes with World Cup
By ALICIA YEOH Tuesday March 9, 2010

Greater awareness: Mohd Ali placing Sukma stickers on a bus at Melaka
Sentral to promote the games to be held in Malacca in mid-June.

MALACCA: Officials responsible for the upcoming Sukma XIII in Malacca have been directed to buck-up their promotion campaigns following worries that it would be overshadowed by the World Cup soccer championship that coincides with the event in mid-June.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam recently lambasted officials responsible for promoting Sukma after a poor start to its Baton Run programme in Linggi last Sunday.

Following this, several campaigns were launched to promote greater awareness on the games, including the display of Sukma stickers on buses and taxis at Malacca Sentral and KL Sentral with the start of a 100-day countdown.

“We have also been distributing CDs of the Sukma official theme song Harmoni dan Cemerlang Sukan Malaysia to 308 primary and secondary schools here to be played during Monday morning assemblies after the national and state anthems,” he told reporters after officiating at Malacca Education Fair in MITC, Ayer Keroh, on Thursday.

To attract visitors to the state during the games from Jun 10 to 19, he said the state would offer a 20% discount on its Taming Sari revolving tower rides and Malacca River boat cruises.

Admitting that the games would clash with live telecasts of the World Cup in South Africa, he said that advertisements of the games would help promote the event.

“I am sure the World Cup will make the games here more vibrant and competitive.

“People will watch the World Cup but notice the games here during the commercial breaks,’’ he said.

A total of 9,000 athletes in 15 contingents including Brunei will take part in 33 sporting events during the games.

This figure excludes 2,000 coaches and technical officers and 2,000 volunteers who will be directly involved in running the games.

Meanwhile, Mohd Ali announced that Malacca would host the World Karate Federation youth and cadet championship next year.

The event would boost the state’s efforts in developing its youth and sports tourism sectors as some 5,000 youths and officials from over 100 countries were expected to take part, he said.

SUKMA Melaka Venue Almost 95 Per Cent Complete
March 08, 2010 19:59 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 (Bernama) -- The competition venues for the Malaysia Games (SUKMA), which Melaka will be hosting for the first time, are almost 95 per cent complete, said Executive Officer of Sukma Melaka, Radzi Shaari.

He said that although there were certain complications with some of the venues considering that several had to be rented from corporations or private individuals, the preparedness of all venues were already close to completion.

"There have been some venues which we have had to leave it to the private sector to either upgrade or refurbish but so far, through our own personal inspections, we have managed to secure the assurance that they will be ready in time for the pre-Sukma later in the month," Radzi said.

The Main Sports Complex is well underway to completion. There are no upgrades necessary for the Main Stadium while the Lawn Bowls Centre, the Aquatic Centre, the Squash Centre and also the Equestrian Park are nearing completion.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam had taken a personal interest to ensure that the venues were completed well ahead of schedule.

Melaka will host the 13th edition of Sukma from June 10 to 19, 2010.

Failure in meeting specifications led to stadium roof collapse
By Bernama
Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:01

KUALA TERENGGANU: The failure by all parties appointed to build the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium (SSMZA) to adhere to specifications stated in the building contract has been cited as the reason for the collapse of its roof on June 2, last year.

Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said the investigation report on the the incident found that all parties had contributed to the collapse of the SSMZA roof.

"No single party was found to be totally responsible. Everyone is (guilty). All parties contributed to the collapse of the roof of the stadium," he said when disclosing the report on the investigation on Wednesday March 10.

According to the Investigations Committee, Ahmad said the main cause of the collapse was that the components used and work quality did not meet specifications, the design was not suitable and the roof was not constructed properly.

He said quality control was not carried out at the project site and the weak supervision during the construction process as well as the lack of skilled workers had also contributed to the collapse.

In addition, Ahmad said the shortage of experts and experienced consultants as well as the apathy of everyone involved could also be blamed for the incident.

Meanwhile, when asked whether a notice had been issued to the contractor concerned to repair the stadium, Ahmad said: "The contractor had been informed and we have issued a notice to the contractor to repair (the stadium), but (to date) there is still no reply". As there had been no response to the notice issued to the main contractor, he said the tender to clean the debris from the collapsed roof would be issued this week at the latest.

2010 Malaysia Cup Final To Be Played In Shah Alam Stadium
May 19, 2010 17:00 PM

PETALING JAYA, May 19 (Bernama) -- This season's Malaysia Cup final will be played at the Shah Alam Stadium instead of its regular home, the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) vice president Datuk Che Mat Jusoh said since the National Stadium would not be available since the track at the stadium would undergo repairs.

"The Shah Alam Stadium was chosen as the venue for the final since the National Stadium will not be available for the final, scheduled on Oct 30," he told reporters after chairing a competition committee meeting at Wisma FAM, Kelana Jaya here Wednesday.

The Shah Alam Stadium, built in 1994, is the home of the Selangor Super League team and has a capacity of 70,000.

Meanwhile, asked to comment on calls by affiliates to review FAM's decision to allow bar foreign players from playing in the M-League, Che Mat said the matter would have to wait since the league has just entered the second round.

A number of states, including Kelantan football association (KAFA) president Tan Sri Annuar Musa had urged the FAM to review the decision to bar foreign imports and allow import players in the M-League.

Annuar Musa had last Sunday said since all Asean countries have allowed import players in their respective leagues, the FAM should also reconsider.

Selangor who played in Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) champion's league also suffered a major setback and lamented the lack of foreign players to beef up its squad when playing against Asian teams which fielded a number of foreign players.

The issue of foreign players is also expected to be a hot topic during FAM's Congress in July.

Call For Kelantan Government To Expedite Land Approval For Sports Development
May 25, 2010 17:15 PM

KOTA BAHARU, May 25 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan Sports Council Tuesday called on the state government to expedite the approval of land to enable sport development projects to be implemented.

Its chairman, Mohd Jazlan Yaakob, said the failure of the state government to approve the land acquisition in time had hampered the federal government's efforts to build a community sports complex in every parliamentary constituency as planned under the 9th Malaysia Plan (9MP).

"This is because land issues are under the jurisdiction of the state government," he told reporters here Tuesday.

He said the sports complexes, to be built at a cost of RM150,000 each, would have various sports facilities for the convenience of local residents.

The construction of the complexes, dubbed "Gelanggang Rakyat", was also in line with the government's aspiration to create a sporting community based on the one community-one sport concept, he said.

Mohd Jazlan said the council realised that the lack of sports training centres in the state had also taken its toll on the athletes.

"If we have the facilities, we are confident that Kelantan athletes can be pushed to greater heights because they are very talented," he said.

Mohd Jazlan also expressed disappointment over the failure of the state government to assist the council in building sport infrastructures, including football and futsal arenas and badminton courts.

Meanwhile, he said that the federal government, through the Kelantan Federal Development Department (JPP), had allocated RM20 million to upgrade the Panji Sports Complex and other sports complexes at the district level.

MPS: Upgrade sports complex
By STUART MICHAEL Thursday July 29, 2010

THE Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) has given the company maintaining the Seri Siantan Sports Complex until December to buck up or risk being terminated.

At a recent meeting, MPS councillors complained about the poor maintenance of the Seri Siantan Sports Complex in Sungai Tua, Batu Caves.

They said the company did not have any lifeguards at the swimming pool and the entry fees were steep.

Councillor Zulkifli Hamzah said the missing tiles in the badminton court had not been replaced and the meeting rooms were not up to standard.

“Each time the council wants to use the facilities, the person in charge is not around. And it is hard to make bookings.

“Even though I am a councillor, I am not allowed to enter the swimming pool area or see the dormitories. The staff members also do not know how to deal with the public in a proper manner,” he said, adding that he had received many complaints about the company.

Zulkifli said the council should take over the management of the complex because the company was only interested in making profits without looking into the people’s interest.

The RM16.8mil complex has a multi-purpose hall with three badminton courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool, children’s pool, several meeting rooms and a four-storey dormitory.

Adults are charged RM5 per entry to the swimming pool on weekends and RM4 on weekdays.

Zulkifli said it was only RM2 per entry when the council was running it three years ago.

Selayang development committee chairman Datuk Tang See Hang said MPS should have given proper guidelines to the contractor before privatising the complex.

“What is the point of privatising it and then making a U-turn to run the complex. Does the council have an ulterior motive?” Tang asked.

He added that MPS should have the interest of the people at heart and not merely shift responsibility to a third party.

Selayang MP William Leong also recommended that the council take over the management of the complex in the interest of the public.

“MPS should take over the complex because it is the only swimming pool in Selayang,” he said.

Complex manager, known as just Kamal, refused to comment on the issue when contacted.

Kajang Stadium to go
By CHARLES FERNANDEZ Saturday August 14, 2010

THE walls of the 40-year-old Kajang Stadium will come down at 10am on Sunday.

The demolition of the stadium, which has been put on hold pending a review by the Selangor state executive council last year, will finally be torn down to make way for the Kajang Square project.

The stadium, built in the late 1970s, will be turned into a public square where people could jog or enjoy a stroll.

The project would include a multi-million rinngit sports complex with futsal and badminton courts, field for tai chi, yoga and aerobic activities, a children’s playground and kiosks selling various wares.

The stadium is a prominent landmark as it is located in the centre of Kajang town.

Its main entrance faces Jalan Kelab while the back portion looks out to Jalan Cheras leading to the bustling Jalan Besar.

In its heyday, many important football league and club matches, involving legendary football players like Mokhtar Dahari and M. Chandran were played at the stadium to capacity crowds.

Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) president Datuk Hasan Nawawi Abd Rahman will launch the ground-breaking event for the new project.

The Kajang Square idea was first mooted in 2000 when the council announced that it had regeneration plans for the stadium, alongside suggestions for a riverine park, satay food court and satay museum as a tourist attraction.

After five years, it was proposed that the underused stadium be turned into a public square where people could jog or enjoy a stroll.

When the Kajang Square was first proposed, there were critics who felt that the project was a grandiose scheme and suggested that the 2.52ha land be converted into a parking area as there was a need for such a facility due to the rapid development in the town.

Kajang assemblyman Lee Kim Sin had said the Bangi sports complex was centrally located and well-equipped with facilities, hence there was no need for a similar facility in Kajang.

THE Shah Alam Stadium is in excellent condition for the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup football competition on Saturday.

The organising committee, headed by Datuk Abdul Karim Munisar, visited the stadium recently.

“We have inspected the pitch and we are satisfied with the conditions.,’’ said Abdul Karim.

This year’s competition is the ninth in the series. Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had initiated the event in 2001 to foster better relations between Selangor and Singapore.

It was then known as the Regent of Selangor Cup, however the competition was renamed the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup in 2003.

Abdul Karim said they were encouraged with the response from all part of the country.

“We are expecting about 60,000 fans for the match. Another 1,000 Singapore supporters will be in the Shah Alam Stadium to watch the exciting matches,’’ he said.

All set: The first match will be between
Singapore veterans and Selangor counterparts.

The first match will be between the Singapore veterans and their Selangor counterparts. The match will see some of the former greats in action. Singapore will have the likes of Fandi Ahmad, R. Suriamurthi, T. Padmanathan, Salim Moin, Malek Awab and David Lee while Selangor will rely on Yap Kam Choon, Datuk Soh Chin Aun, Ismail Ibrahim, K. Gunalan, Khan Hung Meng, P. Maniam, Rashid Hassan and Reduan Abdullah.

“It is a rare appearance of the old football heroes and this might be the only event the people will get to see them. We can watch the Selangor team playing in other tournaments but not the veterans so we hope people do not miss that match,” he added.

The match between the Singapore Selection and Selangor should also be an exciting affair. Singapore are coming with a group of players picked from the S-League while Selangor are also riding high after winning the Charity Shield and Super League this season.

Sarawak Stadium to undergo renovation work
By KERNI PUAH Monday February 7, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2011/2/7/sarawak/8011125&sec=sarawak

SARAWAK Stadium in Petra Jaya, near Kuching is being upgraded in preparation for the Malaysia Games.

Social Development and Urbanisation Minister Datuk Seri William Mawan, who is also in charge of sports, assured that work would be completed within the stipulated time frame.

He said the floodlights, which did not meet the standard set by Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), would also be upgraded.

Mawan said the stadium, built to host one group of the 1997 Under-20 World Youth Cup, would be equipped with top-class facilities for the benefit of athletes.

Stadium Sarawak hosted Group B games involving Brazil, France, South Africa and South Korea. It was also the venue for the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals.

He said some of the outdated and faulty facilities and equipment needed to be repaired and replaced.

“As such, the stadium will be closed to all sporting events including the Premier League until work is completed within this year.”

Mawan also congratulated the Sarawak Premier League side for their winning start to the campaign by beating Penang 4-0 in the away match at Stadium Batu Kawan on Jan 31.

The minister hoped coach Mohamad Zaki Shaikh Ahmad and his charges would continue to chalk up more wins.

Meanwhile, Football Association of Sarawak deputy president Abu Bakar Marzuki hoped supporters would be patient as the upgrading of the stadium would take one or two months.

“Matches will be played at 4.15pm (because of renovation) and ticket prices are still at RM7 for the open terrace seating.”

Sarawak play their first home game - their second in the league - at Sarawak Stadium on Feb 11, hosting Harimau Muda B, before taking on Negeri Stadium on Feb 14.

Shooting range to sport new look for Sukma games in 2012
By SIMON KHOO Friday March 4, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2011/3/4/southneast/8156344&sec=southneast

KUANTAN: The Pahang Sports Council shooting range and complex will be upgraded in preparation for the Sukma Games in 2012 to be hosted by the state.

Pahang Shooting Association deputy president Tok Muda Tengku Razman Shah Tengku Ahmad said the two-storey building costs about RM14mil and would be used as the main venue for the Sukma’s shooting event.

He said besides the upgrading of the shooting range, the complex will be equipped with better amenities for the comfort of athletes.

“This is a very significant development and we hope the new building will help to promote the sport among the people.

“Pahang has produced good results in previous competitions and we hope to churn out more potential shooters,” he said after opening the inaugural Tengku Razman Shah trophy shooting competition in Indera Mahkota recently.

Also present were vice-presidents Datuk Johnny Ch’ng Ewe Gee and Shamsul Zumir Shahrir, secretary Nordin Che Lah and assistant secretary Jerry Lim.

In detailing the achievements of the state, Tengku Razman said the Pahang contingent was the overall Sukma’s champion in Malacca last year.

He said all 24 athletes won a medal each — 15 golds, seven silvers and two bronzes — with nine games records broken.

On a separate matter, Tengku Razman said the association was in the midst of drafting programmes and activities, in addition to hold regular shooting competitions to attract more members to join the association.

He said the association was set up in 1976 and as of now, has 300 active members.

“We are among one of the active shooting associations in the country and hope to increase our membership in the coming years,” he said, adding that the association also received strong support from the state and the council.

Tengku Razman said at present, a 20-acre shooting range in Bukit Rangin owned by the association was being used by members for training and target practice.

He said plans were in the pipeline to hold joint competitions with enforcement agencies every three months.

Later, he presented prizes to the winners witnessed by Shamsul and Ch’ng.

The winner for the competition was Zulazman Ramli while Muhammad Ridwan Nasrul and Zanzuri Kamal Mat Isa came in second and third, respectively.

A total of 30 participants took part, including several media representatives.

PISA to undergo a makeover, says Abdul Malik
By SIMREN KAUR Wednesday July 6, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2011/7/6/north/9034937&sec=North

The Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) will soon be given a makeover, said state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Com-mittee chairman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim.

PISA’s new look, he said, and the upcoming Penang International Convention and Exhibition Centre would be a boost to state’s reputation as a fast moving industrial and trade location.

He, however, declined to reveal the details and the cost of the makeover.

Abdul Malik, who was speaking to reporters after announcing the Gifts and Premium Fair to be held at PISA in November, said the fair was touted to be the first and biggest of its kind in the northern region.

“The fair will showcase a variety of corporate gifts and souvenirs such as pens, umbrellas, key chains, flasks and T-shirts.

“This fair is another feather in Penang’s cap because it shows that the state had succeeded in overcoming the economic downturn of 2008,” he said.

Abdul Malik said he was inspired to organise such a fair after a recent visit to a similar fair Hong Kong as there was a big potential market for such items in Penang.

He said: “Nowadays, everyone from small corporations to organisers of events such as conferences hand out gifts. Guests to Malay weddings are not only given the traditional ‘bunga melor’ but all sorts of gifts in a goodie bag.”

The fair aims to offer an opportunity for corporate clients such as factories, the various government departments and education sectors to buy direct from manufacturers who will also get the chance to share ideas and develop new business opportunities with their contemporaries.

The three-day Gifts and Pre-mium Fair will be held at PISA Concourse area from Nov 10.

The first two days will only be for traders while the last day will be open to the public from 10am to 7pm.

Plans afoot to turn Bukit Jalil Sports Complex into merchandise centre
By EUGENE MAHALINGAM Friday July 29, 2011
http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/7/29/business/9198030&sec=business#13119087895511&if_height=592

KUALA LUMPUR: The Youth and Sports Ministry plans to transform the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex into a “sports city” where it can become a one-stop centre for sports merchandise.

“We have presented this idea to the EPU (Economic Planning Unit),” said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

“The Bukit Jalil Sports Complex can be a profitable one-stop sports centre. We intend to use it as a model and if it is successful, we would like to replicate it in other states as well,” he said after the launch of the Sports Industry Year 2011/12 here yesterday.

e Bukit Jalil Sports Complex includes the National Stadium, Putra Stadium, National Aquatics Centre, National Squash Centre, National Hockey Stadium and is home to both the National Sports Institute and National Sports Council.

Ahmad Shabery pointed out that in popular venues such as the Barclays Premier League team Manchester United's home ground of Old Trafford, there were ample outlets to purchase the team's products and memorabilia but this was not the case in local stadiums, such as the National Stadium at Bukit Jalil.

“The stadium itself should become a profit centre,” he said.

On sports as a sector and contributor to the local economy, Ahmad Shabery said the Malaysian sports industry had contributed RM30.2bil to gross domestic product (GDP) in 2009.

“However, Malaysia's sports industry has yet to be accepted as one of the nation's National Key Economic Areas. The ministry believes in the importance or potential of sports as an industry.

“The ministry has embarked on a number of initiatives to make this a reality and to turn Malaysia's sports industry as a major contributor to Gross National Income.

“This, in turn, will help fulfil the Economic Transformation Programme target of a high-income nation by 2020,” said Ahmad Shabery.

Sports Industry Year 2011/12 is a one-year campaign that runs until July 27. It is aimed at identifying high growth opportunities in the sports industry, targeting expansion and investment as well as establish the sports industry as one of the major contributors towards the Malaysian economy.

The stadium will be closed immediately after the Shah Alam Mayor Soccer Cup 2011.

SHAH ALAM: The 17-year-old Shah Alam Stadium will be closed for refurbishment works soon.

Shah Alam Mayor Datuk Mohd Jaafar Mohd Atan said the stadium will be closed immediately after the Shah Alam Mayor Soccer Cup 2011 final, which is expected to be held in the middle of this month.

The stadium will be closed for about three months.

Jaafar said the refurbishment which costs about RM3 million will involve repair works on the roof, toilets and improving the field landscape.

The stadium will be given a new coat of paint as well as better lighting systems.

"We're going to improve the lighting system so that the floodlights will be at least 1,000 LUX at all four sections of the field," said Jaafar.

The 155,000 sq m stadium can seat up to 80,000 people at a time. It was once the largest stadium in the country, before the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil was built.

Other than football matches, the stadium also hosted other events such as concerts. It also has a go-kart circuit.

The first leg of the The Amazing Race Asia Season 1 which involved riding go-karts was held here.

The stadium, built in 1990, was designed by renowned Malaysian architect Hijjas Kasturi.

It was officially opened in July 1994 and has never undergone major refurbishment works.

Shortly after its official opening ceremony, a friendly football match was held between the Selangor FA team and Dundee United.

There were also friendlies between Bayern Munich, Leeds United and Flamengo at the time.

Last Saturday, the Malaysia Cup final between Negri Sembilan and Terengganu was held at the stadium.

PISA upgrade to take eight months
Friday November 11, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2011/11/11/north/9881092&sec=North

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) will undergo upgrading works beginning Jan 1 next year.

State Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said it would take about eight months to complete the works which will be done in stages so that it would not interrupt events to be held there.

He said 48 events had been lined up at PISA next year.

“That is an average of one event almost every week of the year,” he said at the Penang Development Corporation Deepavali open house yesterday.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is also PDC chairman, said the minimum amount of bonus which state government employees will receive this year has been increased to RM800.

It was a half month’s bonus or a minimum of RM500 previously.

Terengganu to replace grandstand roof with new design
Monday December 19, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/12/19/nation/10123753&sec=nation

KUALA TERENGGANU: Repairs to the collapsed roof of the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium will begin early next year.

The state government had decided to go ahead with the repairs because the damage had worsened due to prolonged neglect, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said.

“We will repair the football field first before doing up the roof,” he said here yesterday.

The roof at the grandstand above the royal box collapsed just a year after the stadium was used for the 2008 Malaysia Games.

Besides the football field, the stadium also houses a squash court and a bowling alley.

Ahmad said the repair work would take some time because much of the structure was damaged and there was a need for a new design.

“We will not go for a normal roof. We may decide on a roof similar to that of the National Stadium (in Bukit Jalil), which is made of lighter material,” he said.

Ahmad said once the field was ready, football matches could be held at the stadium but only during the day because there was a problem with the floodlights.

The Public Works Department would issue a tender for the repair work soon, he added. - Bernama
