The building is great and quite tall for Tallinn, but it looks too boxy IMO

On the whole I don't have too many problems with this building (I've seen worse :D), but those matchstick "colums" at the bottom are just ridiculous. Sorry.

I meant that design is too simple. The building looks like the skyscrapers of 60's, for example like most of the skyscrapers in Midtown, NY. But mostly new high-rises in Tallinn have much modern and interesting design (Radisson SAS, Hansapank, the surrounding buildings like Postimees and that black&white just opposite the new building, etc). I think Tallinn deserves unboring architecture! ;)

hmm, its not ground breaking, true, but its elegance is in its glass... i think it will be spectacular!

But yeah, im afraid we wont get designs like Union bank here for some time... we really need some hard architects to come to Tallinn and see what they can do...

Despite its scale, perhaps Tornimäe will perform more as a background building in the Tallinn skyline than anything else. With the striking silhouette of the Union Bank tower and the Radisson, Tornimäe will add a serene presence to the skyline, one which is already punctured by the newer buildings, as well as by the older church spires. I can’t think of any better means of doing this than by using a modern vernacular; the look and feel of 60s and 70s International Style is one thing missing in the new Tallinn skyline, and will add density to a new downtown that has filled up with too many buildings seeking to claim attention.

The matchsticks are misleading. The often-portrayed image of the completed building does not portray the entire streetscape. The matchsticks help create a loggia of sorts, again something not found on many Tallinn streets.

I’ve been anxiously watching progress on this building from Washington DC. I was hoping to be in Tallinn again this past summer, but didn’t make it. Does anyone have (or could anyone post) photos of the building from a distance, say Pirita or further out? The building should begin to emerge on the skyline very soon, no?

And yes, the building is already doing its part in the skyline and is seen from Pirita and most other places! I think tornimäe is a very good addition because its sheer height, it is just plain simple and will add much needed height to roof to Tallinn, it will make Radisson/Union smaller, and it will demand presance like WTC twins in NY! :)
I dont have any photos of Tornimäe impacting the skyline, but i will take some soon...

I agree with Ch1le and Eerik. Imo Tallinn needs some simple-looking towers, which would help to form a nice skyline. ;)

Everyone says that boxy buildings "destroy the beauty of a city", I think boxy buildings like City plaza and the Olumpia hotel, is what this city needs to make it look more modern, than it is already now!!!

Its taken from the cellulosise plant, next to Fahle (www.fahle.ee) is another similar building, which isnt under renovation yet, and you can climb to its top quite freely, but you have to have balls of steel (hehe), because the ladder is like a zillion years old and rusted to bits :)

I would have fired that ;lady with no pay for that week, and have here never working in such delicate circumstances, not only sis she coasted city in excess of 10 000 euros for that particular stunt it also endangered many ppl who live in the surrounding area, if she lived in UK she would face 3 months in a cooler, for endangering life's of innocent ppl...

OOOH YES! the first piece of facade of the hotel tower (dark) was put on the tower, i questioned the workers, they sayd the white towers facade will start to be put up in 3 months or so (mby they misunderstood me), anyway, like i predicted they will first finish the lower part of the towers, the adjoining part. The facade is, well, its okay, cant really say right now, since there is a "blastic bag" coating over it, so it doesnt get damaged and dirty, i have no idea when they will remove the coating.

Expect pics today, ill try to whaule my camera to the site and make a zillion pics of it, but remember, theres that coating on it right now! But general assesment... I think its quite good ;)

edit: Also, this piece isnt a tester or whatever, its the real thing and other pieces will start following now ;) The facade will go up quite quickly, they installed that piece in about 3-4 hours, and its not a small piece, its rather huge

once again... this isnt what it will look like, the coating of plastic is dirty, and it is think... :D

I can't be bothered to look for the info on this site, I looked at merko official site, I want to know the cost of this project???...and any info on the 35 story tartu road highrise, it's been a bit quite now!!!???

According to Eesti ekspress weekly last week, the price of apartments at Tornimäe twin tower - there's 188 of them - is up to 50 000 EEK/m2 (1EEK=15,6466 €). Only 20 apartments are yet unsold.

S.T.A.S its about 600+ mio EEK, tartu mnt 15 (35 storeys) is keeping a low profile... should start construction any time soon, as far as i know they have all the permits now!

I like the black color of the facade, and how it reflects the light, even that the plastic is covering it.

A restaurant will be on the 30th Floor. Now, the thing thats weird, is that it seems illogical that this would be in the residential tower, so it seems it will be in the hotel tower, now.... the remarkable thing... as of current sources, we know the hotel will be 28 floors. The plot thickens.... not only does the render portray what to me seems like a minimum of 32 floors....

Thanks! I fell in love with Tallinn. This was the first time for me visiting the city and although I've heard a lot about it and seen so many pictures I was really surprised in a positive way. I especially liked it how well the old town was preserved and how a new modern skyline was being built pretty close to the old one but so that neither destroys the otherone and so that they both in co-operation create a very beautiful city. It's also nice to see so much construction going on, I'll definitely visit Tallinn over and over again in the near future just to see the development in my own eyes. It's faschinating.

The white (if we can call it that) is not as good as i hoped it would be, but it will certainly be better as soon as the protective plastic membrane comes off.
BTW look carefully - what does the lower part of Tornimäe facade form in conjunction with Radisson. See 3 colours? :)

Amazing! A friend of mine from the United States was recently in Tallinn, and commented how the entire city appears to be under construction. He especially referenced the construction of these "two towers" in the city-centre and how impressive they look.

Hats off to those who initially proposed the extension of Tartu mnt. With the new construction around it, this extension really has helped spawn a modern looking quarter for Tallinn.

I have some ideas here about that blue thing.
First - it is some another material there for sure .( some another type off glass than on rest surface of facade)
It is not logical to have a same glass blocks in differently colored protective plastics.
And the fact that all blocks of this color are instaled in one place only just confirms this.

Other question is - what type of glass is it?
And that blue color - is this the color of coveral plastic or a color of glass- itself ?
Usually this plastic is transparent (on high reflecting, dark or other color glass block) cause - one can see glass- itself without problems during of construction.
And the sole reason (i see ) to have such colorful protective plastic - is the transparent glass.
Workers must see it during the work ( the elementary safety).

the blue thing is DEFINITELY the protective plastic. in one place a strip has peeled off.. showing the normal facade behind. and the black facade at some places also has a weird bluish tint on it.

so theres no point to argue, its just the cover!

and workers would have no problem seeing the facade without the plastic :D they are absolutely huge pieces with alot of aluminium details...

Anyway, I'm also curious WHY this platic cover is different for this one floor. Could the reason be that this floor is used for something else than the others (maybe mechanical of some kind? spa? something 3rd?), and therefore the glass is less transparant than the on the "normal" floors (but will still have the same look from the outside)?

i think it was just a patch of glass that was made in the factory with that kind of cover. The floor is still for apartments. All of the plastic on the tower will be removed when its done... and the facade will be muuuuch better than...

Would you happen to know if the apartments (flats) on the residential portion are sold out completely or what realtor handles the sales? Many thanks.

most of them are sold already but i think that there are some really expensive ones still left for auction.... but i could be wrong

maybe the glass has special properties but it looks totally the same .... the hotel tower has some of that blue covering aswell but on the other side and in smaller patches... like one or two pieces together ... so it cant be that special

the floors are all for apartments, so identical. Like i said i think its just a random batch of glass that came out from the factory with blue cover.

Tallinn From my experience, I think you should at least know how to spell the name of the city where you're going, it's amazing how hard it is for them/the tourists. -.-

Mby the name is spelt differently in dutch - same with lithuanians, thats why such mistakes are commonplace.

Must see bars? right, well go to the old town chill, have a few drinks ;)

In Latvian Tallinn is written "Tallina". Thus it is a bit problem for us too to remember the correct spelling.

I can't believe I drive past Tornimäe almost every day and have never got out and had a walk.
In my opinion the skyline picture would be even better if the old town was visible aswell. Marvelous nevertheless!
