cool :okay:
excellent location for such a tower. And do they allow to go upstairs on the roof of Radisson? Is there an observation deck?

And those commies, they're so close to the center!

Mmmm, Pornstar, those commies are "hidden" - well, from a pedestrians Point of View, only from air u can see a couple of them :=, there are some better Stalinist era buildings covering them :)

Ill surely try to keep you updated, John, eerrr... there have been alot of proposals for higher ones, just the council keeps limiting them, but im sure they wont stand the pressure for long.. :) A 35 storey building(was planned to be 40) will spring up soon too, although not sure about date, My friends uncle is a "headcheese" in construction company Skanska, and he promises higher ones... :) :)

viru center is a disaster but who cares about what i think, right? :) 90% trees? haha. it's not about trees, it's about open space, where people can relax and read a newspaper or something and not go far away from where they live/work. that's something the city area lacks. now read my signature. why not argue? because it's just my opinion. :)

ch1le
August 29th, 2004, 11:12 PM
well, i must agree with you antip. I love open spaces too, fountains, benches and stuff like that is great! For our great satisfaction, "The city wants to build a plaza at the beginning of Tartu Road (from City Plaza high-rise building to the crossing with Liivalaia Street). There will be fountains and some trees. The plaza will be probably done with Tartu mnt. 15 at the same time. The tramway will stay.

I am not sure, but I think that's why City Plaza has such name."

the above was quoted from a nother estonian forumers - Juno're's, post!

If you ask me what Tallinn's modern downtown needs it's trees lined by the streets.

August 30th, 2004, 12:04 AM
Are those renderings on page 1 the final design?

ch1le
August 30th, 2004, 12:13 AM
not sure... the renderings are not that good, dont give much detail about materials, since u see that plot is quite small, i cant understand how on those renders it fits!... the design should be similar, not too much glory, hope that they use good materials, i read it will be metallic glass panes and so on, but i aint sure. from what i understand it should be all glass... the rendering show it as too brutish i guess ...
edit: imo they are quite different from other skyscrapers in tallinn, it isnt a box, hehe, it doesnt try to "cheat"(like union bank, or Radisson, ofcourse City plaza is ok, but its 34 meters shorter, its amaizing imo, it will be so much taller!)the roof is the initial top height..

ch1le

sometime 2006... well, 2 years is quite a long time, but look at it from this angle - there are 2 towers!

mlm
August 30th, 2004, 02:14 AM
2 years is not that long for 2 towers like this. :)

And the longer it takes, the more time you'll have to be impressed by the new rising towers;)

ch1le
August 30th, 2004, 11:53 AM
yeah, i hope to see 2 couple other rising along with it... its quite possible!

Oberleutnant
August 30th, 2004, 11:57 AM
Two years is definetely a very short time! That's the time what we here have to wait for a 16 story high-rise to finish.

That diagram was very much appreciated. Looks like the first two floor will have shops, third a conference center and fourth one a health center. What is the vacancy rate for Tallinn's hotels -- is there market for yet another?

ch1le
August 30th, 2004, 12:00 PM
ehh, we could use more of them! the hotels are full in summers some 80%. A hotel with a conference centre will try to increase its capacity at winter by attracting confrences there - has worked well for Radisson SAS.
The hotel in one of the twins isnt unvealed yet, it's rumoured to be of a very famous chain, and it will be 5 stars.
id also like to point to there height marked on the top... 122.5 m, im confused now, 112 or 122.5? The latter one is ofcourse better, its also possible that nimbys wanted to shorten it and they lost the small garden and the roofterrace at the top of the residential tower! NIMYS are real idiots, for a couple of meters they might loose something as good as a roofterrace, a nother thing was, tallinn planned to extend Rävala road, they invisioned building a tunnel(first car tunnel in tallinn), it would have required 2 houses(heritage protection)to be taken down, ofcourse the they yelled out loud, and a overgorund road was planned - that would have required destruction of 7 houses... so to save 2 heritage buildings(small wooden huts i guess) they might destroy 7 ...

(edit3 or so)hmm in the text about the changes done to the project i don't see any remarks about height, im curious...122.5 - mby its from sealevel? but 10m? i think the ground is 7.5m above sea level

(EDIT)edited photo up: its 2 weeks old. but the situation right now is quite similar. well, i spent an hour just standing next to the pit and watching the construction... 2 pile drivers, doing just that, driving piles in the soil. Was quite a sight, they are quite big(look at the pic, inside the RED outline)they got one in the ground, lifted other up, set it atop the other and bam, in the ground it dissappeared, well, they did that a couple of times...they did it at quite a pace. Then the steel skeleton was put inside the column, and concrete added... final product(in the blue outline): some steel structure above ground, just yelling BUILD ME, build me! ahh, i still cant wait seeing the first construction overground! Dont know how many of those columns will they drive in the soil...

 i visited the site again, well, then i eyeballed around for 3 hours :P. Wee, they will add the construction tabel next to the street, with the twin pic! It wasnt on it actually today, it was laying on the ground upsidedown, but i still got a good look at it, the pic ought to be quite accurate, shouldnt it - considering that i got a lot more information on the building itself, first off, dont worry, it will be in the S&B forumers "favorite list 2006", its glassy, yes, all glass, like union bank, just a bit more tinted dark. The facade should be similar to city plazas just ALL GLASS. Then, i counted what i thought were floors on the infotab, i read the floors on the building that seemed to be taller, i got 34...ok, weird, read it again - 34, and then again STILL 34. WEIRD WEIRD WEIRD, but super cool, if its like that... highest habitable floor in Baltics? Ok, remember assume that the floor count is right if the construction site render is spot on, and if i really can count things that seem to be floors! :eek2: :eek2: i couldnt grab a engineer from the construction site and ask him wtf was that?... so... i dont know...but wooow.. im speechless!

PS! All that assumed on from the construction site side infotab. Talking bout the color and floors of the dark tower. didnt get a good look at the other one :(

ch1le

pretty much like in the pic i took.. just more of those boxes have been poured, and more earth removed...pile drivers left like 20days ago. So now they just have to dig the earth from around the piles.. and pour concrete over them to form those boxes... that will take time.. then construction as we know it will begin.

I don't think so. Preferably one floor with two weeks with good quality and polishing than one floor with one week showing element borders and with no polishing. :)

Gatis

Eerik

In the USA they normally construct about one floor per week on these types of projects...with a floor area at least five times larger. I'm a little surprised how long this is taking them...

I'm assuming that work of at least some kind is still happening, that it hasn't stopped? Perhaps more attention is being focused on completing the internal workings of the first four or five floors...and once that's done, they'll continue with the two towers?

yeah, it may seem tiny, but its not even 3m. its 3.3m! :D so it's just proof of the massive size of the lower floors :) Oh, and there is a small setback where this tower and the base starts, so its bit behind the bigger floors, notice the small cut in the corners of the 5 lower floors, thats the outline of the tower

Gatis

I'm still amazed how slow a construction can go.
But, at least some activity, crossing fingers for faster works.

Don't worry. If the big economical crisis of 2015 will not be too hard, it has good hope to be completed ;)

LOL! :D

Anyway, the speed is not that slow and it's better to build it in slow speed than to forbid constructions of high-rises at all as happened with some proposals here in Vilnius (it was forbidden to build proposed high-rises next to "Panorama" mall).

pics from today, again work has slowed down and they are setting up the autoclimbing/worker protection unit :D Its awesome might i add, anyhow just 2 bits are up and from what i can understand the entire upper part of the tower will be covered with them and they will be raized as the tower grows :D Its cool, havent seen anything like it before in this part of the woods! Seems like it may take weeks still til they can get it done.
notice the yellow autoclimbing unit!:)

Indeed it is.
This is the crew behind those autoclimbing units. It seems it's going to take a long time.

What do they do with those sticks? Mix the cement? :wtf:
Maybe they should use something else or even try to do something like lithuanian workers: :booze:

That`s cool. I wish that many streets would look like that instead of boring typical apperance.
