hmm... I am getting a complex seeing all those gleaming buildings.

Indian corporate headquarters are generally low profile and simple.

1)Tata Group (rev:$11.2 billion)

Bombay House, Mumbai

2)Aditya Birla Group (US$ 6 billion revenues) is the largest of the many Birla groups.

Aditya Birla Centre, Mumbai

Reliance Industries (US 22 billion revenues or US 11.3 billion???)

They have a small corporate office too. Couldn't find a pic. But here is a pic of their Home

:)

Many of India's huge public sector corporations are housed in these two buildings:

July 29th, 2004, 09:19 AM
i share the same concern as u, huaiwei....but i think it was meant to be global HQ of strictly Asian companies and not regional HQ of MNCs(CitiBank HK, HSBC)

Overmind strictly suggested he "wanted to see H/Q buildings of huge asian companies (like Toyota, Matsushita, sony, Haier, china national petroleum, Petronas TSMC, tata group, CP group, Singapore airlines etc...)".....All the ones he posted were local Korean companies based in Seoul

I think to avoid that usual tussle of who some MNCs belong to, lets just base this on those charts published in reputable international business magazines like Forbes, Business Week, and so on.

And since we are talking about the main HQ of those huge companies, I suppose it is the much more humble looking 15 storey block in Beijing which should be posted to represent the Bank of China instead of the much more splendid one in HK! :D

Anyone got a decent photo of it? It has an architectural feature which is clearly reminiscent of the BOC Tower. ;)

Keep in mind, the Bank of China is different from the Bank of China (Hong Kong).

http://www.bochk.com/images/en/nav/boc_building2.gif

Established on 1 October 2001, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (referred to as Bank of China (Hong Kong) or BOCHK) is a locally incorporated licensed bank. It has combined the businesses of ten* of the twelve banks in Hong Kong originally belonging to the Bank of China Group. In addition, it holds shares in Nanyang Commercial Bank Limited and Chiyu Banking Corporation Limited, both of which are incorporated in Hong Kong, as well as BOC Credit Card (International) Limited.

Bank of China (Hong Kong) is a leading commercial banking group in Hong Kong in terms of assets and customer deposits. With approximately 300 branches, more than 400 ATMs and other delivery channels in Hong Kong, BOCHK offers a comprehensive range of financial products and services to retail and corporate customers. BOCHK is one of the three banknote issuing banks in Hong Kong and serves as a Chairman Bank of the Hong Kong Association of Banks on a rotational basis. In addition, BOCHK has 14 branches and sub-branches in the Mainland of China to meet the cross-border banking needs of our Hong Kong and Mainland customers.

BOC Hong Kong (Holdings) Limited (the Company) was incorporated in Hong Kong on 12 September 2001 to hold the entire equity interest in BOCHK, its principal operating subsidiary. After a successful global IPO, the Company began trading on the main board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong on 25 July 2002, with stock code "2388" (Level 1 ADRs - OTC Symbol: BHKLY).

But the head of Bank of China (Hong Kong) is still appointed by Bank of China (Beijing). It is a subsidiary of BOC in Beijing.

Precisely. I dont know why, but this whole conversation seems mildly familiar here. If locally incorporated subsidiaries count as separate and local companies, then I suppose we can all start posting our Hewlett Packards, British Petroluems, Hitachis, Maybanks, John Hancocks.....just about practically EVERY building with a flagship company in them because for a company of that size to be one, they are more then likely to be incorporated as a local entity too? I think doing so expands the scope of this thread far beyond its original intentions, so lets just keep it within obvious boundaries here?

Anyway, not all of our local companies have flashy and new HQs. :D

This is the HQ of Neptune Orient Lines, one of the largest shipping lines in the world. It is not even located anywhere near downtown!

Right beside is another maritime-related company....PSA Corporation, again one of the largest international port operators globally:

http://www.cs.unc.edu/~lowk/personal/photos/singapore1998/013_PSA_Building_medium.jpg

I cant find more flattering pictures of the later...one of the most under-rated buildings here because it is so far from the city and is rarely photographed. It actually has a very nice gleaming glass surface which can be quite impressive especially when the lights reflects from the stepped facade.

Because many multinationals do not incorporate their regional headquarters. Notice the shares on the Hong Kong stock exchange represent the Bank of China's Hong Kong-incorporated business, not the entire bank based in Beijing. Notice in my references that I am talking about Bank of China (Hong Kong), which is a separate company than Beijing-based Bank of China. Also notice the Bank of China (Hong Kong) is a separate legal entity that is not merely an overseas business of the main bank such as a regional headquarters.

Saying the Bank of China (Hong Kong)'s headquarters is in Hong Kong is correct. It is a locally incorporated company with its primary operations and headquarters in Hong Kong. So it is a Hong Kong company. In contrast, CNN Asia's Hong Kong regional headquarters is not a Hong Kong company unless it is locally incorporated. Many multinationals do not incorporate their regional headquarters.

Anyway, it's all legal jargon so to prevent more confusion for those who don't understand it, here are more skyscrapers housing the headquarters of Hong Kong-based companies from pBase instead :

Go check it out yourself. Does a subsidiary with its shares traded on a local board authomatically signal its complete independence from the parent company? And does a "locally incorporated" company entail a stock listing?

Yes, it is true that no foreign bank is incorporated in Singapore, but right across the causeway, they have a regulation which entails that ALL foreign banks must incorporatise locally.

Its not as unusual as otherwise imagined.

And meanwhile, when we were more interested in comparing the main HQs of our biggest companies, I dont see why we need to discuss about the inclusion of local subsidiaries, whether locally incorporated or not? Its not as thou we are devoid of better candidates which are clear-cut local companies to post here, right? ;)

Sigh...BP Singapore has a rather nice and quite unseen building actually (its near NOL and PSA. In fact, seems like the whole row of scrapers there are almost unknown to many people!)...too bad I cant post it here. :D

Huaiwei > yea....you're right about the non-inclusion of local subsidiary (wether incorporated locally or not) but I am still a bit confused on the status of Great Eastern and Fraser & Neave. Both of these companies are separated decades ago (due to the separation of Singapore and Malaysia) and although they shared the same name, business and logo......they aren't the same company. This senario is certainly different from BOCHK and BOC China ;)

Yeap! Remember we had a discussion before about several retail chains and who they actually belong to? Cold Storage seems to be two seperate companies with the same name in two countries, for example?

Btw, you able to help me verify and confirm if indeed there is a requirement for foreign banks to locally corporatise in Malaysia? I know practically all the Singaporean banks with a presence there do so.

Anyway, Singapore only has 3 banking entities now, after a (governmen-encouraged) spate of mergers.

The United Overseas Bank as we know today has merged with the Overseas Union Bank a few years ago, to create the second biggest bank here (or largest in terms of "domestic customer loans, credit cards and market capitalisation"). This means it basically owns two of our 3 tallest buildings, but the HQ remains at UOB Plaza of coz:

I look at the big picture. Is the locally-incorporated subsidiary an executor of the head office's actions or are they independent to make decisions about the local market that are well segregated from the head office functions? Incorporation is a step in understanding the independence of the entity. You look at it plus everything else for a wholistic understanding of the situation.

Bank of China is not exactly a multinational, and the Hong Kong operations is certainly not a regional headquarters function like CNN or the Economist. Trace this relationship to what's listed on the stock market. Why would the Bank of China list its subsidiary's shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and not the parent company? Also consider the business activities. For example, while the two seem, to you, to be one of the same, in fact, accounts in the mainland and Hong Kong are not linked. There is a clear separation of power and markets that goes beyond just a regional headquarters executory function.

Public listing implies the subsidiary is publically-owned. I'd have a problem with listing wholly-owned subsidiaries because the ultimate decision-making power rests elsewhere, but the Bank of China (Hong Kong) is not one of these. Once again, it's a gray area so it takes a bit more thought before arriving at a conclusion :)

If all else fails, check the articles of incorporation and residency is spelled out automatically right there. For more substance than form, analyze the business context and the big picture.

Yawn....like anyone cares, and like anyone is convinced here. Its not like anyone else here have to go to great lengths to explain why a company is supposed to be "local" and "independent." Devoid of better choices? Well its just too bad. Seems more like just another initiative to lay claim to what isnt entirely yours.

This is Singapore's third largest (or smallest, if you like) bank here, the Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) (the bank recently swallowed up Keppel Tatlee Bank, which in itself was a result of Keppel having Tatlee for a meal), with that monstrous slab of brutalist concrete. Often referred to locally as the "calculator" (I suppose it becomes a handphone by now), it was actually a design based on what the client wanted....."I want a BOLD and SOLID building!"

so I.M.Pei gave him this:

:D Ney....I did consider it before, but the idea of having to argue against my ethics is beyond what I can do. I suppose I will be happier being on the "executive" side of things (with handcuffs that is) and leave the debates to them! ;)

I didnt post photos for the largest bank yet, coz I cant find presentable photos, but here they are, thanks to baq finding them for me! :D

Well...introducing the Development Bank of Singapore (DBS), the largest bank of Singapore and Southeast Asia. Boy I hate it to the core....why? Coz it took over my favourite bank (POSBank), and forever buried the concept of free banking for the folks like us who have to account for each and every cent to survive! And because of this, they also deprived POSBank of having Capital Tower for its HQ. More on Capital Tower later, but I suppose God has eyes. The evil gets uglier buildings:

http://www.streetdirectory.com.sg/buildings/068809_main.jpg

Dont look at the wrong one. Yeah it is the uglier one in the middle of the photo. :D

Another look:

http://www.streetdirectory.com.sg/buildings/068809_front.jpg

Anyway this old lady needed expansion about 20 years later, so they built an extension for it:

http://www.streetdirectory.com.sg/buildings/068809_other1.jpg

The bad is unrepentive and dosent learn his evil ways. It reflects in their extension building? :D

One final look:

http://www.streetdirectory.com.sg/buildings/068809_right.jpg

Yeap, that rounds up the introduction of the 3 banks of Singapore, and if I am not wrong, they are also ranked the 3 biggest in Southeast Asia too? Unfortunately, they arent that big on the continental scene, let alone the global one.

Anyway if DBS has some brains to demolish those monsters and create a SINGLE 280m tower, then I might start to like it a little more? :D

It'll be a scary world to have lawyers who don't care, let alone know what they're supposed to know, but then, no point to specialize in a field where he can't figure out what that mess is about :)

Yada yada yada ;)

Anyway, I suppose most folks here have never even heard of Hopewell as a company, only knowing that name on a building, so perhaps a short introduction about it, and how big is it relative to other companies in HK or the region will help, just as practically all of us have done when it comes to relatively obscure companies?

Chey! ;)

Anyway, here is another introduction to a "confusing company"....Hong Leong Group. Confusing, because there is also a Hong Leong Group in Malaysia, yet both are independent companies from each other since day one. Why? Coz each of the conglomerates were actually headed by two cousins in each country: Quek Leng Chan in Malaysia, and Quek Leng Beng in Singapore, and both are giants in their respective countries. Of coz since they are from the same family, do they sometimes go into an alliance to buy up other companies, or buy each other's stocks.

More info can be found in this Malaysian article:

http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2004/7/5/business/8365180&sec=business

In summary, Quek Leng Beng is the second richest man in Singapore according to Forbes' 2004 listing, and ranked 176th in the world. Hong Leong Group Singapore includes some of the biggest monsters here, including City Developments Limited, one of the largest property developers, as well as in the region (more on this in a subsequent post), Millennium & Copthorne Hotels, the largest hotel chain here, as well as Hong Leong Finance, the largest finance company in Singapore.

Hopewell Holdings

The Group consists of 2 listed companies on the Main Board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited, Hopewell Holdings Limited and Hopewell Highway Infrastructure Limited ("HHI"), each with its own portfolio of businesses. HHI focuses on the initiation, promotion, and development of expressway, tunnel and bridge projects in the Pearl River Delta of the PRC, namely the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Superhighway, Guangzhou East-South-West Ring Road and Phase I of the Western Delta Route. Hopewell Holdings Limited continues to operate its core businesses of property, hotel and hospitality, and construction while retaining approximately 75% shareholding in HHI.

It is also a property developer, with plans to build a new hotel complex next to the existing Hopewell Centre and it also owns the Hongkong International Trade and Exhibition Centre.

Hopewell is also a famous name in Thailand, having started to build a train network in Bangkok which then went defunt, leaving behind a whole series of empty concrete pillars.
