View Full Version : [3d Modelled City]Arryena City Preview
Skyrise July 28th, 2004, 06:40 PM Hi,
As I've told before I've been doing some things with Bryce5 in the past.
I would really like to do some more stuff especially together with other members of this forum.
I've envisioned a Digital City since I saw the skyscrapers @ www.surrealplaces.com
In the future I'd like to set up any kind of project that is kind of similar to the pixelart SSC project.
enough bullshit, let the pictures do the talking:

FAQ:
Q#1 What program did you use?
A#1 Bryce 5, you should try it too!
Q#2 There are a lot of the same buildings in the picture?
A#2 Yes, I only have about 30/40 so I need your help! ;)
Q#3 Can I help?
A#3 YES PLEASE!! :)
teunster July 28th, 2004, 07:13 PM Man that's fucking awesome:/
You have to show me how that trick's done!
One day, my fellow scholier, one day!
AcesHigh July 28th, 2004, 11:15 PM holy fuck!! You completely humiliated me :) !! CONGRATULATIONS! Your city is AWESOME!! Did you draw all the textures by yourself?
entropy July 29th, 2004, 05:32 AM OMG, that 3D city is just absolutely professional - you'd think it's something a team of architects in a professional firm would do!
Skyrise July 29th, 2004, 08:14 AM There are no textures involved :) Bryce uses materials, so all the sides of a block get a "material texture"
It's not textures at the facade, it's just a "real" facade comprised of many many blocks
AcesHigh August 3rd, 2004, 01:39 AM if all windows, etc, etc, are carved or blocks... then there are millions of polygons involved, and its probably a VERY heavy scene. How long does it takes to render one image?
Skyrise August 3rd, 2004, 12:54 PM if all windows, etc, etc, are carved or blocks... then there are millions of polygons involved, and its probably a VERY heavy scene. How long does it takes to render one image?
about fifteen minutes (depending on how high all settings are).. the top images took like 15 minutes. (AMD1700+ / 512MB)
most buildings are ranging from 10.000 (real simples) to 25.000 and up (50.000-80.000 for real complicated ones) polys that is
AcesHigh August 4th, 2004, 02:26 AM whats the average size of the blocks in your city?
Skyrise August 4th, 2004, 10:31 AM what exactly do you mean?
there is no standard block size yet (there should be one, at least a map should be made defining what size blocks have, so you can effectively build on them).
Most of the skyscrapers (right now, block size is determined by the scrapers on top of them... very bad the wrong way around) are about 200x300 or 300x300.
I took over the scale of having 16 Bryce-units being 1 story in a building. (This I took over from Kevin Cappis, my legendary hero from Surrealplaces.com (GO SEE THAT SITE!!)).
still I think we could REALLY really build a SSC-Bryce city with people here... are there people interested?
(go download Bryce5, and try it out)
Phriggin' Ogre August 6th, 2004, 05:51 AM :O You made all of that with Bryce?! Damn, I'm going to use Bryce a lot more often from now on...
AcesHigh August 6th, 2004, 06:19 AM arent skyscrapers 300 meters wide WAY too large? Unless you meant 300 feet!
Skyrise August 6th, 2004, 12:46 PM arent skyscrapers 300 meters wide WAY too large? Unless you meant 300 feet!
300 Bryce units ;)!
1 story height is 16 units, so consider a story is about 3 meters, a Bryce unit is 3/16=0,1875 m
300 width would be 300x0,1875 = 56 meters
now that is for a fairly large skyscraper.
@ phriggin' ogre: I'm REALLY anxious to see your first skyscraper!!! pm/mail (teun@dense-architecture.nl) me if you need a tutorial or help!
(and please use the 16-unit high for a story standard ;))
AcesHigh August 6th, 2004, 10:49 PM apparently Bryce is very good to make more "formal" designed skyscrapers. What about very different buildings? How easy would be to make the COPAN building using Bryce (you can see it in my thread COPAN in 3D, on this same forum...
Skyrise August 7th, 2004, 02:27 AM the Copan building would still be fairly easy (because all floors are directly over one another), in Bryce one would simply use a terrain and put the form of the floor-slab in there and replicate that one.
But, I see your point, 3dsmax or maybe even Maya would be much better for making skyscrapers. BUT:
Bryce is more accesable to anyone, you, or maybe even me can use programs like 3dsmax (*I can't use it YET) but what about those 10 participants who'd love to make something, but just cant?
next thing is that materials and stuff look very good very easily. going to texture a building in say 3dsmax is a proffesionals job and you could shouldn't even start thinking about tree's or scenery (which in bryce is only 1 click away).
Therefore I HOPE there is something (program) to convert 3dsmax or maya files into Bryce files, so the advanced can use 3dsMAX while the main users stay in Bryce.
(all the above story is reasoned out of the idea that there would be more people at SSC-forum to participate in a 3d-city project)
AcesHigh August 7th, 2004, 04:22 AM ok, before I change to Bryce, how easy would be to make these buildings in Bryce? I dont really undestand how do you model things in Bryce, since I am used to normal 3D programs and modelling with NURBS curves...

I ask in special about the tallest building, wich has some curved triangular arches and such. And what about the "horns" over the Orthanc Tower? How can I do that in Bryce?
Skyrise August 7th, 2004, 01:53 PM you need to do those by using negative & positive blocks (either cutting or becoming solid at the intersection points).
I know that you cannot do a lot with bryce and that is therefore VERY limited, but that is why im so anxiously looking for a 3dsmax-bryce converter.
to answer your question: I THINK all buildings you posted CAN be made using bryce, only the tallest would be a little problem, but isnt impossible.
this is what you CAN achieve with bryce:
http://www2.hku.nl/~teun0/seminar/beach2.jpg
Frost Bank
http://www2.hku.nl/~teun0/seminar/arch_edifice.jpg
Arche Edifice
http://www2.hku.nl/~teun0/seminar/emerald_tower.jpg
Emerald Tower
http://www2.hku.nl/~teun0/seminar/sapphiregrandhotel.jpg
Sapphire Grand Hotel
http://www2.hku.nl/~teun0/seminar/swinghotel.jpg
Swing Hotel
the above buildings were made by Freq, a friend of mine. they show that STILL a lot CAN be done using Bryce (especially the Emerald Tower).
the only thing that ISNT possible in bryce is using organic-forms, but: in how many percent of the skyscrapers do you use those organic forms?? 5%? 2%? 1%?
besides: buildings like London's Millenium Tower that "look" kinda organic, still can be made using bryce and boolean constructions.
so, assuming that we will eventually find a 3dsMAX -> Bryce converter, I think Bryce will do the job for the meantime because:
- its easy
- makes pretty ok renders without any pain
- CAN make 95% of the skyscrapers
- is quite easy to learn and therefore creates a big group to participate
- has materials

I think, if he is interested and has a little bit of spare time, we can learn A LOT of this guy! go check his galleries! awesome!! :))
AcesHigh August 9th, 2004, 01:49 PM ok, i will get Bryce! :)
Macca-GC August 9th, 2004, 02:14 PM Oi, Canal City Rocks!!!! I like. And I also like that Orthanc Tower. I'm a big LotR fan too!
Skyrise August 9th, 2004, 03:10 PM ok, i will get Bryce! :)
im really anxious to see your firstborn :)
3tmk September 6th, 2004, 11:49 PM wow!
it looks great!
Rapid September 9th, 2004, 02:42 AM OMG, I use Bryce 5 and Im not nearly at that level!
It must take so long to render, let alone how much time it takes for that much detail! You must have some time to do that!
Here is an example of one of my Bryce buildings, nothing compared to yours!
http://img80.exs.cx/img80/2835/WTCprp.jpg
You have to give me some pointers!
Do you know of any place I can download your models, or can you send them to me directly?
Skyrise September 12th, 2004, 11:12 PM this is a new building by Freq (Freek, a friend of mine, who's also in) and an older picture of some low-rise downtown buildings.

I was just strolling around some wast places, construction sites and industry areals at night to get inspirations for that, not related to anything, just for my own work - wanna collaborate?
gothicform September 24th, 2004, 06:23 AM here's a building cladding for you, i so far have over 400 photorealistic building textures for bryce ive done by using rectified photographic techniques on buildings. -

this contains a lot of bryce work too -

Skyrise September 25th, 2004, 11:28 AM gothicform, can you please make or write a short tutorial for making textures like yours in Bryce. I'm sure a lot of people would be really helped with that (like me :))
bowesst January 5th, 2005, 08:44 PM where can you download this program?
Giorgio January 30th, 2005, 09:20 AM How do you make buildings in Bryce5? I have no idea i just got it The other day
Avatar April 17th, 2005, 07:58 AM There is some awesome stuff here.
Such excellent detail - to render canal city I think people would need a render farm with workstation grade computers! It's fullon.
The detail in all the cities above is excellent and they make mine look so primitive!
Jensjuh May 15th, 2005, 09:00 PM Where do you get this program? Because i want to join to :)
Jensjuh May 17th, 2005, 08:29 PM Ok i have the software :) So i can go start building if i know how.
Wssps May 18th, 2005, 04:13 PM :runaway: :runaway: :runaway: bryce hey?? :runaway: looks very cool!
