Filip September 17th, 2010, 03:28 PM One of my favourite pieces of public art, bar none, in the entire world!
It's very unfortunate it's staying in Toronto for only 3 years.. I think it has one more year left. I hope some philanthropist purchases it so it can grace the city forever.

This is one of five bronze statues in Ireland Park, which was recently created in Toronto. It commemorates the 39,000 Irish immigrants who arrived in Toronto in 1847, fleeing the Potato famine in Ireland. Toronto had a population of only 20,000 at the time so the number of immigrants was overwhelming, to say the least.
Nearly 1,100 of the immigrants died, either during the lengthy passage on the disease-filled, overcrowded ships, or once they reached Toronto's shores. Jubilant Man represents the emotion of a new immigrant who has left everything behind, in hope of a better life in his new land.
The park is comprised of five bronze sculptures of Irish immigrants, and towers of Kilkenny limestone, engraved with the names of the known victims who died during their passage, or upon their arrival in Canada. Rowan Gillespie, the artist, also created a series of seven sculptures which are on display in Dublin Ireland entitled "The Departure".
