View Full Version : Kelowna, BC gets huge development | News
mr.x July 30th, 2004, 07:21 AM The construction boom and the Olympic benefits are hitting all four corners of British Columbia. Kelowna, a beautiful agricultural lake centered town in the province's deep interior in the Okanagan, surrounded by mountains, population 100,000, is getting a huge $250 million condo development that will change the face of Kelowna's downtown. The project will be completed in time for Vancouver's Olympics.
some info about the project:
It's front and centre and deserves something significant, sophisticated and urban. Plans unveiled Wednesday to TheDaily Courier show a cluster of highrises and marine uses that Milroy labels "uniquely Kelowna." There's a 16-storey hotel with 225 rooms, 20, 24 and 28 storey condominium towers with a total of 675 apartments, a large public pier with a market and restaurant, a fullservice marina, 60,000 square feet of waterfront retail, a parkade, plaza and park.....If all city permissions go well, starting with Tuesday's advisory planning commission, Pandosy Landing could begin site preparations later this year for phased-in completion of the four highrises in 2006-09

benji45 July 30th, 2004, 08:18 AM meh its ok.
omersheikh July 30th, 2004, 09:38 AM it could be the statr of something great
Taylordaman July 30th, 2004, 09:48 AM That's a great looking project. Looks too big for Kelowna.
Westcoast604 July 30th, 2004, 10:00 AM That looks beautiful, it will compliment the existing 2 resort style condo towers already present in downtown Kelowna, and help expand what is already shaping up to be an amazing waterfront. I really hope this goes thru, I could see kelowna as a city with many high rises, mainly because it is beautiful, a resort community, and nowhere to go but up. It reminds me of desert cities in the states.

giallo July 30th, 2004, 10:01 AM My hometown is going through some major growing pains. I lived there for 19 years and never saw anything happen beside the Dolphin towers and the Grand. Within the next 5 years Kelowna will double its highrise collection.
That is the worst rendering I've ever seen BTW. Why didn't they at least use a picture of the real mountains in the background?
jada July 30th, 2004, 07:13 PM Hey mr X.. welcome to the forum and thanks for starting some good threads!
Mr.Habitat July 30th, 2004, 09:11 PM WOWWOW I l;ived there for 11 years! and little k town is growing up!
THis is soo exciting!!! Looks great!

jada August 22nd, 2004, 06:34 PM I havent really been to Kelown but I have heard alot of great things about it. The city is booming! I could see business growing there dramatically in the next 10 years. And those condos above are astounding! Way to go!
Taylordaman August 23rd, 2004, 11:24 AM More stuff being proposed already. Look at this thread. There are no renderings yet.http://www.skyscraperpage.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=51750
Architype August 23rd, 2004, 04:02 PM Haven't been to Kelowna, and have nothing against it, but this development looks a lot like a bit of typical Vancouver condo-style plunked down in the interior of BC. The architecture could be better, but for a small city I'm sure it will add a lot.
jada August 23rd, 2004, 07:40 PM ^^Actually, for it to be "Vancouver Style", there would have to be more glass than that.

They're building most of those for older people! ;) So, yeah, it is!
I think if the conservative nuts prevent more jobs and development here, we might have to do something like kelowna. I wouldn't mind the city having an actual skyline, though.

Will look like this.

salvius August 25th, 2004, 10:48 PM I prefer other developments that I have seen more than the highrise to tell the truth.
PS: Why is Kelowna such a small town? It has the best weather in Canada!
jada August 25th, 2004, 10:51 PM Its growing, salvius!
Roch5220 August 25th, 2004, 11:18 PM What are the prices/sq footage?
Can you post some pics of downtown, the main strip I mean. I very much like the townhouses that Robville picked. I'm in the market for a townhouse in TO over the next 2 years and I hope it looks something like those ones. I like the amount of windows they have and the absence of side screen panelling.
Robville August 26th, 2004, 12:10 AM http://www.robtrent.com/photos/downtown.jpg

I'll find the prices on these townhouses. I know they were around $350K last year but prices have really skyrocketed in Kelowna since then. The nice thing about these ones is that you can drive your boat right to your front door via a lock controlled lagoon emptying into Okanagan Lake.
Roch5220 August 26th, 2004, 12:14 AM Ya, those are nice, but i was actually wanting to no the prices on teh condos.
I bet you could chuck your but into the canal from anyone of the townhouse balconies. Another added bonus.

...That actually sounds like fun! But you'd have to be pretty high or jump pretty far, the condos aren't that close.
Robville August 26th, 2004, 08:05 AM Current Condo Prices:
1708 sq. ft, 2BR/2.5Ba, $489,000 (plus $341/month condo fee)
1256 sq. ft, 2BR/2Ba, $369,000 (plus $302.63 condo fee)
1146 sq. ft, 2Br/2Ba, $319,000 (plus $260.05 condo fee)
or the Townhouses on the Lagoon
1626 sq. ft, 3BR/2Ba, $559,000
All prices are Canadian Dollars
vid August 26th, 2004, 08:25 AM Pretty expensive :O You can get a great view of Thunder Bay Harbour and in walking distance of everything you'd need for only about $400,000, why move there? I thought people liked cheaper places to live.
giallo August 26th, 2004, 08:52 AM Thanks a lot for the pictures, Robville. I'm a fellow Kelownian. I grew up there and it's really nice to see how the new developments are coming along. I haven't been home since last August. :sleepy:
Dylan Leblanc August 26th, 2004, 06:40 PM vid, I's sure the weather in Kelowna in more habitable. Everyone likes to live in BC because we don't freeze our a$$ off in the winter.

Look at those sq footages though. They are huge places. HUGE.

Weaklings! :jk:
If Northern Ontario is so inhabitable, how did Elliot Lake get there? Did a community just float from BC, and bring it's climate along with it? According to the commercial, The Old-lady-with-huge-glasses-and-a-wide-mouth and her husband, the-funny-looking-ancient-guy love it there!
jer4893 April 10th, 2005, 09:42 PM i love kelowna so much... dont know what it is about it. Maybe becasue its a cool city (thats gonna be big) in BC that dosnt start with a V.
Koz April 10th, 2005, 10:26 PM Holy crap, it's a boom town over there. That skyline will look pretty good in a decade!
ssiguy2 April 10th, 2005, 11:44 PM It looks good for Kelowna. I hope it does something, anything for the downtown which is amongst the worst I've ever seen.
OK downtown but now all they need to improve it is to actually see some people there.
*Jarrod April 11th, 2005, 02:19 AM so, did those towers get approved?
Wallbanger April 11th, 2005, 03:52 AM I dont think those Towers will get approved. If the towns people are smart, they wont. I know a lot of you want it and I think it would look great, but can you imagine the shadow it would cast on the rest of the downtown? And all the aparetments behind and hotels who would have their views blocked by those green Giants? That would be horrible.
giallo April 11th, 2005, 07:09 AM ^ They won't cast much of a shadow at all. The westbank mountains across the lake are much higher would block the sun before these buildings had the chance. Even if there weren't those mountains, the towers face west so I'd only become an issue at sunset.
Kev the burninator April 12th, 2005, 01:24 AM what the heck lol
yesheh April 12th, 2005, 04:15 AM Actually, i was just in kelowna over the weekend, rather fun town, isn't it the fastest growing in bc? I liked it's downtown, it's touristy, and there were quite a few japanese or korean tourists there, but no touristy shops at all....
I took one pano, but i still have to stitch it together, from the fith floor of the royal anne..., maybe tomorrow...
but here's some other pictures...

that's all for now... most of my other pictures are of the jazz festival that we were in town for, nothing really interesting....
Yesheh
CanadianCentaur April 12th, 2005, 05:34 AM That looks totally cool.
I like the developments and stuff, including the huge project proposal. It's a little surprising how high the prices are for the condos there.
I'm gonna be in Kelowna for a few days between June 2-6 for a conference.
mr.x April 12th, 2005, 05:51 AM that's all for now... most of my other pictures are of the jazz festival that we were in town for, nothing really interesting....
high school? my sister went there too for the festival. are you going to Whistler as well?
yesheh April 12th, 2005, 06:37 AM here's my attempt at pano... i didn't want to break my flickr account for the month so i only did 800x112, i didn't really know what to put it at..., the original is 5492x954....
Mr X, we're not going to whistler this year, but normally our school does go. it was rather annoying at the festival because kss won all the awards with bands, but we got second in jazz choirs, which was rather good as we normally only do classical stuff....
my first pano, from four photos

every year at this time since when i could remember, our family went to Whistler at this time and coincidentally eversince she started high school, it was on the same weekend - the last weekend of the Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival. this year since the Whistler festival is 10 days after the Telus festival, we're going when she goes meaning we'll miss the competitions! :bash: :bash: :bash:
nice pano btw.
yesheh April 13th, 2005, 12:44 AM yeah, seeing that the schedual got messed up means my school had to skip too... oh well, we get to go to saskabush...

Rhino April 13th, 2005, 04:51 PM This is ausome for the city of Kelowna , I hope people who have seen my other threads dont think Im anti Kelowna, Thats really ausome.
Kev the burninator April 16th, 2005, 10:03 AM The huge development is most likely not happening sorry to say but other high density residential projects are about to go under way, and the new bridge is going to be started in a few months or so. So ya, that's exciting
Victoria April 19th, 2005, 08:11 PM Looks good. :)

wha...??? new bridge???? since when???? i have not heard about this. are there any pictures of it? where is it going? is it going right beside the old one and is it going to be another floating bridge????? i'm so curious now.
Kev the burninator April 20th, 2005, 02:12 AM yep, the new okanagan lake bridge is gunna be built right beside the existing one and the old one will be destroyed because its in really bad shape... its not safe anymore lol... so ya, it will be good... it will be a five lane bridge and i don't know why they don't just make it six but whatever. The plan is to have either 3 going on way and 2 going the other way or 2 going both ways with 1 emergancy lane... soooo we'll see. I tried to find some concept pics of the bridge for you but failed to find any... ill keep looking for some tho..
