‘The Toptani Shopping Center by MVRDV is part of the recent developments in the Albanian capital Tirana, a city which has emerged with innovative creative force from the past socialist chaos.

The combination of retail and offices allows for an iconic building following the requirements of both programmatic parts. The retail is located easily accessible in the lower floors and arranged around an atrium which follows the natural access routes from the city. The shopping center can be used as shortcut to generate more pedestrian traffic. The interior of the atrium is clad with mirrors which will create a magical scenery in which the shapes of the reclining floors mirror themselves.

The office floors on top are arranged around the same core which is slimmer here which is more efficient for the office program. The office floors provide views over the city and outside spaces, in the Albanian climate a real asset.

The façade has two main functions: it engages the city by being accessible through a series of stairs and balconies extending the city life and providing a façade animated with life. Parts of the façade are devoted to advertising, mostly around the entrances to the arcade of the façade is clad with a giant LCD screen which can engage the city and is in this new positive tradition of Tirana. The façade can be programmed according to the events in the centre and it can even serve as screen for important events such as elections or football matches.’

Tirana needs more architectural buildings so that it can actually look like a european capital nd not a south american capital that it looks now

yes too unique but not good unique. its too modern and i dont think albania needs some wat glass structures. even tid i dispise because its too high, because i know once u get one u cant just hav one u gotta have many. and about the most modern thing im not so sure thats completely true because the enk complex looks a bit more modern it is also going to be the biggest in the balkans.

You do know that TID is part of the 10 Towers plan for the square right? The towers planned in various parts of Tirana will be much higher than the 10 towers planned for the square. I know the ENK complex is modern thats why i said ( one of the most modern ones in the balkans.)

Well if you think about it right Tirana cant expand anymore. Its surrounded by mountains now and close to 1 million peopel live in it. So the logical thing to do is to go up in height with the buildings and thats what they are doing now. No need to apologize about it i do agree with you ENK complex is great and i cant wait for it to finish.

too bad im completely astounded that all those civilians would choose living in a crouded area opposed to areas like vlore were it looks better developed with nature and beaches. i mean i comprehend that they may have more oppertunities in tirana but actually they may get more money in vlore were they're probably needed to construct strucutures or hotels for tourizm purposes. What actually needs to be done is not construct buildings that are higher but recontsruct the ones that are about 3 -4 floors, after following the thread tirana photo gallery for a pretty long time ive seen many buildings were no people live or as previously stated are very short. i just hate seeing tirana as a potential city with skyscrapers but not really, because they're not really high nor are they like buildings for instance in Greece where the buildings arent as high but are rich in ancient architecture. so were does that leave tirana? not good skyscrapers nor architecturally rich buildings? they should have a limit of 75m

^^ Outside the city center they are free to build as high as they like. What you are saying now is utter bullshit. And towers of 100M+ have been proposed. Especially near the Tirana lake area.

i like more building with special or unique character, maybe following local Albanian tradition. Many big cities lost his characther because they want to be modern. I hope Tirana does not take this way.

I like the new "Albanian Parliament House" plan, because it has character..
