here some info:

Il DUOMO di Milano

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The biggest and greatest late gothic architecture in Italy.
The second world greatest Cathedral.
The cathedral is white marble, over a brick core, and has a cruciform plan. One of the largest cathedrals in the world (14,000 square yards) it was designed to accommodate 40,000 worshippers. The forest of pinnacles, the tracery panels, and the rich embellishment with statuary identifies it as Late Gothic. Closer to France than most Italian cathedrals, it borrows more directly from the French "rayonnant" style.
Begun in the 1380's on a site where several churches had existed earlier, the building of this cathedral was fraught with difficulties. Over a number of years several different architects and consultants (including Leonardo and Bramante) were asked to work on the design.

I wonder who voted 4 for such a wonderful architecture, 400 years of work to build a massive marble church higher than 110 metres with a gold statue on the top and thousands of statues all around. The biggest Gothic Catherdral in the World and second biggest church.A shame !

Well, as a non-Italian, right today (Wed, 19 Jan 2005) at dawn I saw Milan Duomo in this way (it's a quite distant web-cam, yet it's fine :) ) ...

Too much! (though spires like that may come in handy every once in a while...)
No trace of serenity to be found, this building behaves like some rich people.
Also, this mix of gothic and classical elements, especially in the west front, does'nt work for me.
7/10 just for its size and impressiveness.

10/10, has the renovation been completed?
The renovation of Duomo never ends... When they finish working on a part they have to begin working on another one! :D

In Milan we use the expression "La fabbrica del Duomo" ("The Duomo factory") referring to everything made extremely slowly. Something which seems never to be finished. :D

Are you working since 1 year on a project which usually would need no more of 1 month to be completed?
Is your municipality building something very slooooooowly e with a lot of interruptions and problems?
That's what we call the "Duomo factory"! ;)

Something which is never completed, because when people end working on a part they need to work again on a part they completed sometimes before. :D

BTW; actually works on the front side of the Duomo are completed. But now they began working on the main spire (the tallest, the one with the "Madonnina"). ;)
