UP TO 900 apartments and townhouses in buildings eight storeys high could be built on the site of a historic horse saleyard in Randwick under plans being considered by the state government.

The Newmarket saleyards, owned by William Inglis and Son since 1917, are set to become the latest piece of Sydney's racing history sold and turned into a major residential development.

Randwick council has endorsed an early proposal to amend the Local Environment Plan and rezone the five-hectare site on Barker Street opposite the Prince of Wales Hospital, for mixed density residential development. A preliminary design is for 800 to 900 dwellings in buildings of between two and eight storeys, with up to 775 car spaces.

Heritage items on the site, which has been home to thoroughbred auctions for five generations of the Inglis family, would be protected.

If approved, the rezoning will follow an agreement between the City of Sydney and the NSW Harness Racing Club to allow the residential redevelopment of 1200 dwellings on another historic racing site in inner Sydney, the Harold Park raceway in Glebe.

The Greens councillor Margaret Woodsmith was the only Randwick councillor to oppose the proposal. She said she held fears the development would be assessed by the state government under the controversial part 3A planning laws.

A council spokeswoman said they had not endorsed any specific scale of development and has requested a series of site studies to be prepared.

Anyway, if this site can get 900 apartments on 5 hectares it makes 1200 on 11 hectares sound ridiculously lame.
