Malacca to spend RM2.35mil to buy 10 new buses
By MARTIN CARVALHO Friday July 23, 2010
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2010/7/23/southneast/6683296&sec=southneast

MALACCA: The state will spend some RM2.35mil to acquire 10 new 40-seater coaches for its Panorama bus service in a move to upgrade the public transportation system here.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said an order had been placed for the coaches from Scomi Engineering & Logistics Sdn Bhd, a company specialising in the building of buses and coaches.

“The move is part of a RM36mil transportation package plan which the state is seeking from the Federal Government.

“It is to upgrade the public transport system in the state in line with the National Key Result Area,” he told reporters this after visiting the Bumi Hijau programme in Bukit Katil.

He said the air-conditioned coaches would be equipped with the latest facilities to provide comfort for passengers.

The Malacca government, he added, had decided to operate the buses via its subsidiary PM Cultural & Tourism Sdn Bhd rather than leasing them from local bus company Town Bus Service Sdn Bhd.

Mohd Ali said the former Panorama bus service leasing deal resulted in losses of RM1.2mil over the last three years.

The state has submitted its application to the Federal Government for the RM36mil allocation following approval from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to improve the public transportation system here.

The money would be used as a revolving fund and a bank guarantee to enable 11 local bus operators to obtain the necessary bank loans to replace some 206 old buses operating within the city as well as the Alor Gajah and Jasin districts.

The funds would also be used to provide subsidies to bus operators to ensure services on ‘social’ routes that are usually not covered, owing to low profitability.

In a separate matter, Mohd Ali said the state was also keen to source electric buses from China for future use in the city.

“I saw some of the buses while in China recently and they are pollution-free as they do not emit any smoke,” he said.

SCOMI Engineering Bhd (7366) wants to refurbish the remaining 190 buses under a RM36 million budget allocated by the Malacca state government.

Scomi Engineering has been given the mandate by the state government to refurbish an initial 10 buses worth RM2.3 million.

The state government has set aside the RM36 million refurbishment fund for a total of 200 buses to help bus operators replace their fleet.

"If we do a good job, then we hope to take on more buses for the project," Scomi Engineering president Syahrunizam Samsudin said.
Syahrunizam spoke during a visit to the New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Bhd (NSTP) office in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

About 15 delegates from the group, led by its president and group chief executive officer Shah Hakim Zain, were given an insight into the operations of three newspapers in the NSTP stable - the New Straits Times, Berita Harian and Harian Metro - as well as other aspects of the group's operations such as advertising.

On hand to greet them were NST group managing editor Datuk Zainul Arifin Mohammed Isa, group editor Datuk Syed Nadzri Syed Harun and Berita Harian deputy group editor Mahfar Ali.

The delegation was later treated to a durian feast organised by Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority at the NSTP office building.

A 1.6 kilometer shuttle monorail along the Malacca River is nearing completion. The single track line connects Taman Rempah in Pengkalan Rama to Kampung Bunga Raya Pantai in the central part of the city. One 24-passenger, three car train will shuttle back and forth along the winding river. The line was developed by Kumpulan Melaka Berhad and Agibs Engineering and Construction Sdn Bhd. The monorail was developed as part of government efforts to enhance the Malacca River area of the city as a tourist attraction. The system is currently undergoing test runs, yet probably won't open until September. Before carrying passengers developers must complete a licensing and approval process.

RM272m tram project for historical state
By MARTIN CARVALHO Friday March 5, 2010

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2010/3/5/southneast/se_03tram.jpg

Modern: One of the trams that will be used in the service
to adopt green techology and ease traffic woes in Malacca.

MALACCA: Traffic congestion here is expected to be a thing of the past when a RM272mil tram project is operational.

Said to be the first of its kind in the country, the trams will run on natural gas and cover 23 locations along a 40km route from Ayer Keroh to Banda Hilir in the heart of this historical city.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the project, a joint-venture between Mrails International Sdn Bhd and Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI), would begin in the middle of this year as soon as the Transport Ministry gave the go-ahead.

“It will take the company about 12 months to get the trams running. The service should be ready by the middle of next year and its launch will be held in conjunction with National Day celebrations,” he told reporters after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Mrails International and CMI on Wednesday.

He said the service to be managed by Mrails Tram Melaka Sdn Bhd (MTM) was in line with the state’s move to adopt green technology while easing traffic woes here owing to an influx of tourists.

“Traffic from Ayer Keroh to the heart of the city is heavy during rush hour and holiday seasons.

“The trams will help overcome this problem as they will provide both locals and tourists an alternative way to travel to the city,” he said.

Based on projections, he said that 250,000 passengers were expected to use the trams monthly and provide annual revenue of RM20mil for MTM.

The joint-venture project would involve the obtaining of a 20-year interest-free bank loan, he added.

“CMI will receive 20% of the ticket sales based on its 20% commitment and the trams will belong to the state in 25 years,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mrails International president Datuk Jeya Kumar said the service would charge a RM2 fare per ride irrespective of destination.

“However, senior citizens and schoolchildren in uniform will ride free.

“It is a commitment to ensure the people of Malacca benefit from the service,” he said.

The first trams of 150-passenger capacity would be imported from China but more would be built later at Tanjung Agas in Pekan, Pahang, he added.

Tram project gets the nod

MALACCA: Visitors to the Historical City could soon enjoy a traffic light- free ride from the Ayer Keroh toll plaza to the city centre, thanks to the Melaka Tram project.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the Department of Railways had given the nod for the project.

"However, we would have to wait for the green light from the Public Works Department as there is a need to build four flyovers to ensure the path of the Melaka Tram is not affected by traffic-light junctions.

"The flyovers would be built at the Persimpangan Seri Negeri, Persimpangan Bukit Beruang-Bukit Katil, Persimpangan MBMB and the Persimpangan Muzium Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba.

"With the flyover, the tram's journey will be uninterrupted and the traffic flow from the Ayer Keroh toll plaza to the city centre will be smooth as there will be no traffic lights," said Ali after chairing the weekly state executive council meeting at the Seri Negeri yesterday.

He said the RM272 million tram project, similar to the one in Brisbane, Australia, could start construction early next year once the project received public feedback during a three-month objection period and also upon completion of the environmental impact assessment.

The Melaka Tram would have 23 stops along a 40km-route from Ayer Keroh to Banda Hilir, the heart of the historical city.

The project, a joint venture between Mrails International Sdn Bhd and Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI), is expected to be completed within a year. He said the project was mainly to cater for the influx of tourists to the city.

It is estimated that 250,000 passengers will use the trams monthly, providing an annual revenue of RM20 million.

Among the popular spots the tram will pass are Hotel Seri Malaysia, Botanical Gardens, Melaka Zoo, Melaka International Trade Centre, Taman Muzaffar Shah, Pantai Hospital, Masjid Al-Azim, Hospital Melaka, Renaissance Hotel, Dataran Pahlawan, Hotel Mahkota, Harbour Club, Equatorial Hotel and Bukit Baru.

MELAKA, Oct 20 (Bernama) -- The RM16.5 million Sungai Melaka tourist monorail connecting Taman Rempah to the Hang Tuah Station in Jalan Bunga Raya was launched by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam Wednesday.

This latest tourism-aimed project uses green technology from China and it covers a 1.6 km route that runs parallel to Sungai Melaka, connecting Hang Tuah Station and the Hang Jebat Station in Taman Rempah.

The project was developed by the Historic Melaka City Council.

"The one-coach monorail will be able to ferry 22 passengers each roundtrip which will take about 30 minutes," he told reporters at the official launch of the service in Hang Jebat Station here.

The service will be opened to the public Friday. Adults will be charged a fee of RM10 while children will be paying RM2 for the tourist train ride.

"I want to express my gratitude to Transport Minister (Datuk Kong Cho Ha) for approving the permit. The project will further drive tourism programmes in Sungai Melaka," Mohd Ali said, adding that the project was significant amid the declaration tonight of Melaka as having achieved developed state status in 2010.

Work on the project started in May 2008 and was completed in June this year by Agibs Engineering Sdn Bhd.

The chief minister also said that the Tourism Ministry had approved the second phase of the project costing RM13.2 million which will see the monorail route expanded to Jalan Tun Ali which is close to Jalan Bunga Raya.

Work on the second phase is expected to start end of this year with completion next year. This will add on to the service capacity of the monorail to three more coaches and 66 passengers per trip.

The monorail is ride for fun. Melaka should have rapid transit with evelated/at-grade railway connecting Ayer Keroh to city center, and city center having tram and streetcar as mode of rapid transit.

no need lah...monorail,tram,lrt and whatever

just need a revamp of busses services, and everything will be cool and dandy
if any rapid transit is needed, then BRT can be put into place

if we nneded any rail, then just have a KTM branch line from tampin to mlk will do,bonus if it goes to muar and BP,i know theres a plan for KTM western bypass, thats good to

but, just bring in bus,.no need to overcharge and overengineered a simple problem

still, juxtaposing the scale of the monorail and that of the shop houses, it will be an eyesore, unless we have huge cluster of towers. The monorail will inevitably disrupt the image of Melaka town with rows of 20th century chinese shop houses. I prefer tram, even though quite impossible with the current poor state of town planning. Or we can just use a simply efficient bus system would be suffice.

A solution which is similar to RapidKL or Rapid Penang will be good to provide public transport in Melaka city.that is already there, Panorama Melaka is owned by the MBMB and they are planning to expand the services  :ohno:

Eventually they will claim that they cannot afford the cost of the owning and operating the buses and beg the Federal Government to come in and save them, which will lead to the formation of "Rapid Melaka"

Of course, the Melaka residents will be utterly confused by the idea of "Rapid" and "Melaka" in the same phrase, (similar to the confusion in Terengganu, Kuching, and some say soon in Ipoh) while the other bus operators will laugh their faces off, complain loudly to the newspapers about competition with the deep pockets of the government, etc.

And in between all of that, someone will call for an MRT in Melaka or an expansion of the 1-track loop monorail as the ultimate solution to get Melaka residents and visitors to use public transport.

Cheers, m

Projects for the better
By R.S.N.MURALI
murali@thestar.com.my

MALACCA: A coastal highway linking Port Dickson to here and upgrading the busy Ayer Keroh dual carriageway are among four infrastructure projects proposed by the state government in Budget 2012, expected to be tabled by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Oct 7.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the other projects requested were flood mitigation programmes to improve water flow at flood prone areas apart from widening of drainage system and sewage projects.

“These projects are salient in state bid to provide better facilities for locals and to meet the economic boom taking shape in the state,” he said after a working visit to Pekan Bukit Baru here, recently.

Mohd Ali said existing infrastructure like sewage and drainage could not correspond to the massive development experienced in the state, and this resultedin flash floods in many parts of the city.

Mohd Ali said upgrading of the Ayer Keroh carriageway involving the construction of a flyover at the intersection of the Malacca International Trade Centre andIstana Malacca junction near Pantai Hospital, was needed to address the bottleneck situation there.

He said the state would also request to introduce a tram service between Ayer Keroh and Melaka city to reduce congestion at several busy sections in Ayer Keroh and Batu Berendam.

In an unrelated development, Mohd Ali said the state government had spent RM4.9 million to pay compensation to owners of 26 houses and shops in Pekan Bukit Baru to make way for new development at the site.

He added the site would be developed with the construction of a three-storey building comprising 43 shops.

Work on this project was expected to start in August.

Monorail line back on track
By R.S.N. MURALI Monday June 6, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/6/6/nation/8841291&sec=nation

MALACCA: Malacca’s RM15.9mil monorail service is back on track after months of being idle due to a host of technical problems.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam confirmed the service was now back to normal.

He said the state would study whether to extend the rail system based on the response received from tourists.

“We have to gauge whether the service is popular among the tourists before extending the line,” he told The Star yesterday.

Mohd Ali said the state government was also looking into creating a tram service to address traffic congestion in the city.

Launched on Oct 20, 2010, the monorail service came to an abrupt halt due to a host of technical glitches, including problems with its software system.

The China-made monorail line, spanning a 1.6km rail system from Taman Rempah in Pengkalan Rama to Kampung Bunga Raya Pantai along the Malacca River, is part of the state’s aim to tap the potential of the river as a tourist attracti*- on.

A coach with some 20 passengers stalled about 100m from the Hang Jebat station hours after its launch last year.

Operator Menara Taming Sari Sdn Bhd later used a sky lift to rescue the stranded passeng-ers.

The monorail project is a joint-venture between the Malacca Historic City Council and state government subsidiary Kumpulan Melaka Bhd and Agibs Enginee- ring and Construction Sdn Bhd.

Mohd Ali showing the construction of the complex in Malacca during a visit recently.

MALACCA: Construction of the state’s recently revived Customs Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex is expected to be fully completed by March next year.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the government had strived hard to ensure the project was restored after the initial construction hit a snag due to technical hitches on the part of its previous contractor.

“We have commissioned a second contractor and up to now 38% of the project is completed and if all goes well, we could anticipate the RM73mil complex to be operational by mid-2012,” he said at a site tour recently.

Once completed, Mohd Ali added the complex could accommodate 15,000 visitors arriving from neighbouring countries on a monthly basis.

“This will certainly be a boost for Malacca in terms of the tourists arrivals,” he said.

The CIQ will complement the Batu Berendam International airport as a major gateway to the state and also to expedite the entry process for foreign tourists.

Mohd Ali said once the CIQ was completed, the state could also attract tourist boats from Singapore and Batam to enter the local waterway.

He added that frequency of the current ferry services from Bengkalis and Dumai in Indonesia could also be doubled with the new facility.

The increase, could turn the Malacca port as an optional hub for ferry services from neighbouring countries.

On another matter, Mohd Ali said the government hoped to introduce a tram car to ferry city folks to several selected destinations.

He said the tram service would help alleviate traffic congestions at the city-center while the monorail service was also expected to resume soon and would serve several populated areas here.

Rail transport to ease congestion

MALACCA: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has proposed a rail link to address the state’s infamous traffic congestion.

SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar (pix) said a high volume of vehicles entering the city contributed to the bottleneck in the tourist city.

“We will look at a rail transport system and whether the Malacca government is interested in implementing a tram system to be developed through a privatised project,” he said at the launch of SMK Hang Kasturi’s Patriotism Month celebrations at Masjid Tanah on Monday.

Syed Hamid, who is also the MP for Kota Tinggi, said public transport such as bus and taxi services here also need to be enhanced to encourage locals and tourists to use the mode of transports within the city

“Malacca’s traffic congestion is worsening, sometime it consumes much time to reach the tourist destinations here due to bottlenecks,” he said, adding that the situation may further worsen with the influx of tourists where the figure anticipated to hit 11 million this year.

He added that the planned rail transport system for Malacca could be emulate the same system implemented by United Kingdom to develop their public transportation structure.

“We could share United Kingdoms experience in laying an effective rail system to address such traffic congestions.

“Furthermore, SPAD and United Kingdom Government had sealed an agreement with an objective to spearhead the availability of rail system in major towns and cities in Malaysia such as My Rapid Transit (MRT),” he added.

Monorail traps British duo

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/11/2/nation/9821606&sec=nation

MALACCA: The city's monorail service came to an abrupt halt at 1.11pm on 1.11.11, trapping two British tourists for about 20 minutes.

Firemen rescued James Craft, a 57-year-old police officer from England, and his 49-year-old wife Anne, a former school teacher.

The couple descended from the monorail using a ladder.

Craft said he took a ride on the monorail to get a panoramic view of the historical city.

“It was a great experience. The service came to a halt a few minutes after it left the station. But we did not panic,” he said, adding that he and his wife understood that such a glitch was unavoidable.

Menara Taming Sari chief executive officer Nazry Ahmad said a faulty door pump caused the monorail to stop.

“We consider the incident a minor glitch as our service resumed at 3.30pm after the malfunction was rectified,” he said.

Menara Taming Sari, the operator of the monorail service, reimbursed the couple's fare and offered them a free ride at the Taming Sari tower.

“We also sent an apology note and souvenirs to the couple,” Nazry added.

The RM15.9mil monorail service was launched on Oct 20 last year to mark Malacca's developed state status.

But it was grounded shortly after the launch because of technical problems and software glitches.

The service resumed in March when Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam announced that the state planned to extend the monorail line by another 1.6km in 2013.

Currently, the China-made monorail line spans 1.6km, starting from Taman Rempah in Pengkalan Rama to Kampung Bunga Raya Pantai along the scenic Malacca River.

Melaka Air to fly to Penang, Kota Baru

KUALA LUMPUR: Melaka Air will operate domestic services from Malacca to Penang and Kota Baru by year end, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said the flights, operated with cooperation of Firefly, will boost Malacca International Airport in Batu Berendam.

"The only airline using the airport is Wings Air which operates three weekly flights from Pekan Baru, Indonesia to Malacca since last year," he told Sim Tong Him (DAP-Kota Melaka) who wanted to know of efforts to enhance the airport and the traffic volume.

Abdul Rahim said the airport handled 21,687 passengers until December last year.

Malacca signed agreements with Asean airlines allowing Melaka Air to operate flights to Asean destinations with unlimited frequency.

"The airport also gives Passenger Service Charge discount of RM26 to international passengers," he added. BERNAMA

Malacca monorail service suspended for a month
November 08, 2011

MALACCA, Nov 8 — The monorail service in Malacca, connecting Taman Rempah to the Hang Tuah station, has been suspended for 30 days from today as it could pose a danger to passengers because it did not meet certain safety recommendations.

Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chief operating officer Azhar Ahmad said engineers from KL Monorail and SPAD discovered that the monorail operator failed to fulfil several key passenger safety aspects, according to a Bernama report.

“After our two-day inspection, completed yesterday, the monorail service has been temporarily suspended for 30 days until its operator Taming Sari Sdn Bhd is able to provide the facilities recommended by SPAD,” he was quoted as saying today.

He said that one of the recommendations was the provision of a “cherry picker” crane to rescue stranded passengers when the coach stalls.

“The monorail tyre traction was also not strong enough when it rains and this must be rectified,” he was quoted as saying, adding that SPAD would continue with its inspection once the operator complied with the recommendations.

Another problem was that the monorail, imported from China, did not come with an operation manual in Bahasa Malaysia or English, which made carrying out repair and maintenance works a challenge, according to the Bernama report.

It has been reported that two British tourists had to be rescued using a ladder when the monorail they were in stalled on November 1.

Following the incident, Azhar ordered a 48-hour stoppage on the 1.6km line to enable a safety inspection.

The RM15.5 million monorail was launched by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam in October last year and has carried about 16,000 passengers since.

When contacted later, Mohd Ali said the service should not have been suspended as it has fulfilled safety aspects.

“However, I will look into the matter on Monday to gauge the actual situation,” Bernama quoted him as saying.

How dare those technicians and engineers from SPAD and KL monorail say that the monorail is not safe, what the heck do they know? Ha ha wtf and Ali Rustam already gave his words saying that it has fulfilled safety aspects. Why would anyone contradict him.

The story of this monorail is like that dongeng story of that golden bridge to gunung ledang.

Both are white elephants, both came from the rakyat's purse, and both goes to nowhereeeee. When will people learn from (hi)story ?

But really ... probably because the Melaka CM has no idea what he is doing with respect to public transport. Someone raised a good point tho ... why not buy the remains of the Sunway monorail guideway & trains (there are 3, aren't there) and build a 3-station monorail (Hang Tuah, Taman Rampah and Melaka Sentral) with a bypass track at the middle station.

Malacca monorail controversy
By R.S.N. MURALI
murali@thestar.com.my

MALACCA: Despite the endless glitches that has struck the Malacca Tourist Monorail, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said there is a bright side to the issue.

“I know many quarters have criticised the monorail service due to the glitches but we are optimistic it will gain popularity once the flaws have been rectified.

“It has gained fame thanks to the media reports about the earlier problems,” he said, when officiating at the ground-breaking of the second phase of the service at Jalan Tun Mutahir here yesterday.

Mohd Ali said the service had malfunctioned 27 times since its launch in October last year.
On the right track: Models posing next to a replica of the new Malacca Tourist Monorail coach that will begin services once the second phase has been completed in February 2013.

“We almost made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for encountering countless breakdowns,” he quipped.

“But on the bright side, a recent breakdown that caused two tourists to be trapped was flashed by the media globally.

“Now, tourists want to be ferried on our monorail, so that they could proudly say they had the opportunity to ride on the so-called troubled service,” Mohd Ali said.

He said the state government had recently commissioned two Chinese engineers from manufacturer Unis Technology Company Limited, to oversee and resolve problems plaguing the monorail operation.

Mohd Ali said the Chinese engineers discovered that the previous glitches were mainly caused by improper handling of the monorail system by local technicians.

“The engineers are now sharing their expertise on the appropriate way of operating the system so that it would not halt midway,” he said.

On the second phase, Mohd Ali said the 1.3km track will connect the Taman Rempah station to Jalan Tun Ali and Jalan Tun Rempah.

The RM21mil project is expected to be completed by February 2013.

Mohd Ali said the second phase would include traffic and signalling management systems to ensure passengers' safety.

A new coach, which can carry 24 passengers with improved safety features, will be used in the second phase.

‘Down’ time allows monorail operator to conduct safety drill

MALACCA: Residents near the Hang Jebat station of the Malacca River tourist monorail service panicked when they saw commuters being lowered from the cabin with ropes, thinking that the problematic train had stalled yet again.

There were anxious looks as several people were strapped into the safety harness to be brought to the ground, with a skylift also on standby.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when they found out that it was just an emergency drill by the operator Menara Taming Sari Sdn Bhd.

Its chief executive officer Nazary Ahmad said the “emergency” was a fire at the station which disrupted power supply.

A total of 20 commuters and two workers were “trapped”.

Nazary said the firm took the opportunity to conduct the drill while the monorail service was still suspended pending re-inspection by the Land Public Transport Com*mission (SPAD).

“We are also using the time to train our workers on emergency and first-aid procedures,” he added.

On when the service would resume, Nazary said all safety aspects and requirements had been implemented.

Public Can Give Views On Melaka Tram Project

MELAKA, DeC 24 (Bernama) -- Members of the public will be able to give their views on the proposed Melaka Tram service when an exhibition on the project is held soon, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said.

He said the exhibition would display the model and method used for the proposed tram project.

"I have asked the relevant parties to expedite holding the exhibition," he said when met by Bernama here.

He said the Melaka Tram project would be the first tram service to use natural gas (NGV).

"This tram is different from monorail because it functions as a public transport to avoid traffic congestion in Melaka," he added.

The Melaka Tram project, costing RM272 million, would be built by Syarikat Mrails International Sdn Bhd with the cooperation of the Chief Minister Incorporated.

i think tram is the best solution for traffic woes in melaka. but they should be implemented in the inner city rather than from ayer keroh to melaka city center. make inner city and between dataran and mahkota pedestrian street. ban all private vehicles from entering the core area. firstly it will be pollution free and secondly it will protect our heritage building from car accidents like the one we saw in penang where a car slammed into three pre war shop houses. Tourist will feel safer if there is no cars moving around in the narrow street. tourists and local do walks anyway from one end to another. so there is no reason why it cannot turned in pedestrian.

we have almost 1500 carpark bays in Dataran, Hatten and Mahkota and if parking in Ocean, SAM is fully utilised, make the tram ply these route with several branches, i believe it can solve the traffic problem

SPAD gives green light to Malacca Monorail
By R.S.N. MURALI Updated: Tuesday January 10, 2012 MYT 1:34:12 PM
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2012/1/10/nation/20120110134239&sec=nation#13261895879281&if_height=433

MALACCA: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has lifted its suspension on Malacca's Monorail.

SPAD chief operating officer Azhar Ahmad said engineers from KL Monorail and SPAD had conducted in-depth observations and given clearance to the operator of the service, Menara Taming Sari Sdn Bhd, to resume the service that connects Taman Rempah to the Hang Tuah Station.

"We sent a letter last week to the operator to inform them of the go ahead to resume operations.

"However, we still uphold one of our conditions spelled out in our earlier notice, that the service should be discontinued during the rainy season," he said Tuesday.

He said the no-operation order during downpours will be rescinded once the tracks have been coated with thermal paint to avoid traction of the train's wheels during wet weather.

The tourist monorail service suffered a second round of suspension on Nov 29, last year when SPAD ordered the operator to discontinue service, following the discovery of a new faulty area.

SPAD discovered the defect on the auto-mode function of the rail, which is part of the key passenger safety aspect of the service and summoned the original monorail maker from China to rectify the shortcoming.

The monorail service has experienced 21 service disruptions since it started operations in October, 2010.

The RM15.9mil monorail line runs 1.6km from Taman Rempah in Pengkalan Rama to Kampung Bunga Raya Pantai, along the scenic Malacca river.

SPAD slapped its first 48-hour suspension on the monorail operator on Nov 2, when a British couple was rescued after the service came to an abrupt stop.

Less than a month later, a group of 18 Hong Kong tourists, their tour leader and guide were stranded after the service suffered another malfunction, forcing SPAD to issue a second round of suspension, this time for an indefinite period.

As part of its service resumption, SPAD ordered the operator to equip the service with a cherry picker - a hydraulic crane - to rescue stranded passengers should the coach stall, which the operator later provided.

He has made Malacca a pleasant and touristry place...I like what he did with the river but the monorail is :bash:.

I'd close the histroical area to traffic and make people walk and take the trishaws.

CM sees lighter side of Malacca monorail controversy

On the right track: Models posing next to a replica of the new Malacca Tourist
Monorail coach that will begin services once the second phase has been
completed in February 2013.

Malacca to give RM7.7mil compensation to ailing omnibus operators

MALACCA: Malacca's ailing omnibus operators will get RM7.7mil in compensation from the state.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam also announced Thursday that the state-owned agency, PMTC, would fully take over the stage bus operations from Feb 1 while the current dilapidated buses used by ten operators would be replaced in stages.

The memorandum of understanding between the state government and Malacca Omnibus operators was signed at Dewan Seri Negeri.

Help for 10 Malacca bus firms
By R.S.N. MURALI

MALACCA: The state government has agreed to form a consortium comprising all 10 ailing bus companies in Malacca.

A reliable source from the state government said the agreement was struck during a meeting between the Malacca Omnibus Operators Association and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam recently.

“An amicable solution has been formulated, in which the state government has agreed to establish a consortium.

“This will halt the association's plan to stop services from Feb 1,” he told The Star yesterday.

The source said all 10 operators would continue to enjoy profits although they would come under one body managed by the state government.

He said another meeting was expected to be called next week to fine-tune the agreement, which would lead to the formation of the consortium.

However, the source said that the quantum of shares allocated for each of the operators under the new consortium has yet to be ascertained and would probably be discussed during the second meeting after Chinese New Year break.

He said the public transport ticketing system, routes and fares would also be reviewed.

“The state will also draft measures to help keep bus services afloat, particularly on unprofitable routes in the rural areas,” he added.

It was reported that Malacca stage bus operators had threatened to halt their services from Feb 1 in protest over the state government's failure to solve the concessionaires' woes.

The impending strike was aimed at forcing the state government to pay compensation to the ailing bus operators as promised in July.

In November, the state government had agreed in principle to buy all 10 stage bus companies, which served about 130 routes in order to alleviate their financial burden.

Malacca Omnibus Operators Association president Razali Endun said the bus operators had suffered huge financial losses as much of their earnings were used for maintenance of their ageing fleet, besides paying salaries to about 1,500 staff.

SPAD: Meet state government to settle woes
By R.S.N. MURALI and RAHIMY RAHIM

PUTRAJAYA: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has urged the Malacca Omnibus Operators Association to meet the state government to resolve its financial woes.

SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said the problem could be settled if the group discussed the matter so that an agreement could be reached.

He said there was a need to review the public transport system in the state.

“We need to examine the whole system, including the ticketing system, routes and fares, among others, to improve the current situation. Bus operators should also be financially ready to compete with one another,” he told The Star.

The Government, he said, had come up with short-term measures to help keep bus services, particularly on unprofitable routes in rural areas, afloat.

On Dec 19, the Government pledged a RM400mil fund to support troubled stage bus companies. SPAD began receiving applications on Jan 3.

Stage bus operators in Malacca had threatened to halt their services from Feb 1 in protest over the state government's failure to solve the concessionaires' woes.

Malacca Omnibus Operators Association president Razali Endun said 10 of the concessionaires decided to halt their buses after no financial lifeline was rendered as pledged by the state government.

“The impending strike was aimed at forcing the state government to pay compensation to the ailing bus operators as promised in July.

“We have waited for the monetary assistance until Dec 31 but there was no response from the state government,” he said.

Last November, the Malacca Government agreed to buy all 10 stage bus companies servicing about 130 routes in order to alleviate the financial burden faced by the local concessionaire.

Razali said the bus operators suffered huge financial losses as much of their earnings were allocated for maintenance of their aging fleet, besides salary payments to about 1,500 staff.

“Our woes are further compounded by the existence of state government-funded bus service Panaroma which services lucrative routes.

“We are forced to ply the social route that is not covered by Panaroma, which is unfair to us,” he added.

The Panorama Melaka bus
The Panorama Melaka bus service has been given a boost in a bid to transform the company towards a reliable and efficient public transport operator in Melaka. Launched by Chief Minister of Melaka, Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam on Friday, 1st October 2010, 10 brand-new midibuses were brought in to replace the current fleet of full-sized citybuses. The Hino XZU423RD1 buses were assembled by Scomi Coach and is licensed to carry as many as 31 passengers. Dubbed as the Coaster Bus, the 10 units are to replace 8 buses which were leased from Town Bus. The buses have since been returned to the owner. With the acquisition of the new fleet, PMCT is gearing up for a big expansion in the near future as it announces plans to introduce more routes in and around Melaka. PMCT, which also owns the 2 unique ex-London double-decker buses, will be able to oversee the operations of the buses it owns and manage it more efficiently. PMCT is expecting more such buses to be rolled out progressively in the coming months.

:)The regular buseslah ,just that when its slow they should switch to the smaller size buses.!If thats too much trouble then the bus companies can continue to bleed money on almost empty buses anyway!so you think the bus co should pay for 2 different types of buses for peak & off-peak hours - thus requiring two types of training for drivers, maintenance personnel, maintenance facilities, etc. Not to mention that smaller buses are less efficient (using more fuel per passenger mile in comparison to a larger bus) and the operations costs are similar (since the driver's wage is a major component of operating cost).

:)Rapid KL is doing it for some of their routes using smaller buses,But ur right for peak and off peak may be too much ask for:)right, but RapidKL has different buses sized for different types of routes - smaller buses for housing estates where there isn't that much road space.

They also have a large enough fleet of those smaller buses so the average cost goes down.

With 10 buses, the average cost savings is not that much from having smaller buses. Better to stick to the larger ones.

Also, the new buses should be conforming to standards - stepless buses, or low-floor rather than mid-floor and high floor buses.

At least one good thing - the new buses will probably be quieter than the older ones.

Cheers, m

CM Says Bus Drivers Will Not Get Less Pay Than Previously

MELAKA, Feb 1 (Bernama) -- All bus drivers under Panorama Melaka Cultural and Tourism (PMCT) will not get a salary of less than what they were getting when working for bus companies in the private sector.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ali Rustam said all the drivers would receive their salaries based on points taking into consideration certain criteria.

"Drivers will get a RM510 basic salary a month, but if commissions and overtimes are taken into account, they can get RM1,000 or more," he told reporters after visiting Melaka Sentral here, Wednesday.

The State Government through PMCT took over the management of stage buses in Melaka from today after paying a compensation of RM7.7 million to 10 stage bus companies in the state on Thursday.

However, about 50 bus drivers staged a picket today citing unhappiness about the salary offered and compensations due to them which they did not receive.

Their representative Abdul Hamid Sahad, 44, said they were unhappy about the salary as they were earlier drawing basic pay of RM850.

Commenting on the matter, Mohd Ali said any problem or dissatisfaction should be referred to the bus companies concerned as PMCT had paid all compensations.
