View Full Version : Skylines: As seen on TV...
Jimmy James August 1st, 2004, 12:13 AM Here's a novel idea for a thread - and it works for somebody lazy like me!
Post pics of cities as they're shown on TV. I'll show you what I mean...

Blend August 1st, 2004, 03:43 AM howd u get the shots?
get boston from boston public
Oriolus August 1st, 2004, 05:59 AM There's a lot of ads that use skylines.
What about that one were they form a massive human pyramid around some skyscrapers (in US presumably) - forget what the ad was for, but it was something totally irrelevant
Anyone from Qld seen that scratch-it birthday ad on TV - there's a wide shot of Brisbane CBD then a shot looking up the side of a scraper - don't know which though.
CHapmaN August 1st, 2004, 06:31 AM ^^ the human pyramid is for playstation 2
i cant remember which car, but there's a car ad with a car driving across the story bridge w/ brisbane's skyline in the background.
and in the lock up your boss ad you can see rialto out the window.
and in that ad where the man is being wrapped in newspapers by the breeze you get some shots looking up scrapers in sydney, but then he's running in a grass field with rialto in the background.
Fabian August 1st, 2004, 09:18 AM I think that ad for playstation 2 was set in Rio.
I remember the intro to "Always Greener" featured the Sydney skyline and selected scrapers plus aerials when showing city scenes with the best one featuring Phillippa "Pip" Todd (Bree Walters) with the Chifley Talls Club acting as a backdrop. Marissa Taylor (Michala Banas) had the Warringah Freeway with the city skyline as her's Elizabeth "Liz" Taylor (Anne Tenney) had the view over the CBD from Stamford on Kent.
Seven News promo's in Sydney often feature fab skyline shots and aerials too.
Blend August 1st, 2004, 09:28 AM the scratchit ad shows brisbane and it shows 50 caville ave on the GC as well
Jimmy James August 1st, 2004, 12:54 PM Just point that Digital Camera at the television and click! Make sho u set the shutter speed first otherwise u get a funny image! I'll post some more later on, CSI and CSI Miami always have good skylines.
That Playstation 2 ad bends my mind into a pretzel! I mean can you imagine being one of the poor sods dumb enough to be on the bottom! Fun Anyone? How about a pile of a million dead bodies!!! That's fun right?!
Jimmy James August 1st, 2004, 12:56 PM and in that ad where the man is being wrapped in newspapers by the breeze you get some shots looking up scrapers in sydney, but then he's running in a grass field with rialto in the background.
I thought that whole ad was done in Melbourne...
tayser August 1st, 2004, 01:00 PM nope, it starts in Martin Place and eventually ends up in Port Melbourne (just behind Yarra's Edge) with multiple changes throughout it all.

zion August 1st, 2004, 02:14 PM The best is Mission Impossible (TV Series filmed in Australia, Version 2).
Is shown here in Singapore right now.
They used Melbourne skyline as Boston. Pollywoodside was their HQ. Como place as enemy hideout.
In one of episode, the were suppose to be in Hong Kong. It was filmed in Little Bourke Street. However, because of bad editing, you see a Melbourne MET tram, whizzing pass the screen.
Mission Impossible was filmed in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, in 1985-87.
I remember they were filming at Swinburne University. They had to import American cars with Amercian number plates. It gave Australian actors an opportunity talked with American accent. (quite funny)
Another is VISA TV ad here, it filmed on top of Melbourne Central.

Blend August 1st, 2004, 03:49 PM someone get shots of syd, bris and melbourne from mission impossible!
ive seen that and didnt recognise my own city :S
zion August 1st, 2004, 04:07 PM Hi Blend, I wish I had VCR to screen capture it. Remember, Mission Impossible producers tries very hard not to reveal which city that they are in. However, the Australian landmark buildings (even Australian cars) can not be hidden from the the camera. I believe this TV series (version 2) was a big flop in the states.
Blend August 1st, 2004, 04:41 PM ive never seen, itd be good if you could get them somehow zion.
I decided to join jimmp so i went and sat in front of my tv. I took one of brisbane, for an add for some retirement home which had city views. Unfortunately the cam on tv was panning across the city so it came out blurred.
Swapped channels and got this of Federation square model: (An abc as i speak)

JayT August 2nd, 2004, 12:13 AM I love the channel 7 news promos of Brisbane skyline - they must be up there evey week because the shots are spectacular and always very recent.
jt
Jimmy James August 2nd, 2004, 10:58 AM They have a similar thimg for their melbourne news...
Later tonight - Skyscraper Porn when I take shots of The Apprentice...
Fabian August 2nd, 2004, 10:55 PM National Nine News do a flyover of the Sydney skyline at night during the start of the bulletin, just before Jim Waley or whoever is presenting starts reading the headlines. They have done this since the start of the year with Sydney Tower, MLC and the talls of the Eastern CBD (Chifley, GPT etc) plus the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.
Oriolus August 3rd, 2004, 04:24 AM Does anyone know what the skyline behind Ray Martin is on A Current Affair - it seems quite low and not very impressive - it looks pretty crap as a backdrop actually.
What about The Panel - it's close and dark but does anyone recognise it.
elfreako August 3rd, 2004, 06:51 AM David and Margaret's MOVIE SHOW on the ABC uses Perth's skyline as a backdrop.

I think the Ray Martin one is completely made up. All low rise crap on the side of a hill,no identifiable building.
Jimmy James August 3rd, 2004, 01:11 PM The Panels is all cardboard - but it's meant to represent Melbourne. Best cardboard skyline IMO is Seattle as seen on Frasier

seven_news August 4th, 2004, 07:07 PM The following caps are from Seven News promos aired in Sydney. I'm sure most of you (in Sydney) have probably seen these - I think the city looks great in these promos. :)
The latest 7news promo which started airing a few days ago with the inclusion of Matthew White as new sports presenter:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/Qantas/SevenNewsSydneypromocapAUG2004.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/Qantas/SevenNewsSydneypromocap13-AUG2004.jpg
And the following are of a 7news promo which started airing back in January of this year. It promotes 7news as covering 'every part of Sydney' and it had fast-moving aerial shots of major Sydney suburbs, as well as fly-pasts of the city skyline (Melbourne also had, and still has, a carbon-copy of this promo, with the city skyline, St Kilda, Springvale, Frankston, Ringwood, and Blairgowrie shown in fast-pace aerial shots):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/Qantas/SevenNewsSydneypromocap8-JAN2004.jpg
Ended with this clever super-imposing of Seven's Sydney news anchor Ian Ross on this glass-fronted building (I'm sure someone knows it!):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/Qantas/SevenNewsSydneypromocap6-JAN2004.jpg
Fabian August 4th, 2004, 10:36 PM That's the Ernst & Young Building. They eliminated the signage for the promo. There is also another version where Ian Ross appears on the facade of Gateway Tower at Circular Quay :)
I haven't seen the new version of the news team. The old one had the team at the Overseas passenger terminal at Circular Quay with the city towers rising in the background. They used the same setting for the onw just featuring Ian Ross & weekend presenter Ann Sanders.
Also someone should try and grab a capture of the aerial done over the then booming southern CBD.
Jimmy James August 5th, 2004, 12:05 PM I don't know about Blairgowie (WTF?) but the 7 news promo I've seen the last aerial is of Geelong

seven_news August 5th, 2004, 03:02 PM Yes the earlier promos with Ian Ross had him plastered across Gateway Tower at Circular Quay, as below:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/Qantas/SevenNewsSydneypromocapDEC2003.jpg
And here is a cap of the previous National Nine News opener used in Sydney, with a flyover of the CBD:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/Qantas/NationalNineNewsSydneyopenercap28APR2003.jpg
The new National Nine News openers in Melbourne show a cool view looking down the Yarra with CBD and Rialto dominating on the left, and Crown on the left with those pylons firing along the promenade - looks shmick.
And yes the Melbourne promo for Seven News did originally include Blairgowrie, and I was quite surprised as to why they'd include that amongst the other more well-known suburbs. But I think it was to emphasize that Seven will cover any suburb, big or small. The shorter versions airing now, don't include Blairgowire - and yes Geelong is also another one shown, I forgot about that one.
Also lookout for brand new Seven News openers for all bulletins, due to start with or during the Olympic Games. Apparently they are supposed to include a 7news chopper flyover of each city's CBD. I remember Seven Nightly News used to do this back in the days of David Johnston presenting - and they seem to be returning to this. So there's sure to be some cool views in these openers. :)
Macca-GC August 5th, 2004, 03:44 PM Ok, I think the view behind Ray Martin is of somewhere near one of the suburbs surrounding the Spit in Sydney. Looks like a view from North Head.
Don't worry, we've got that 7 News ad up here too. They have Brisbane, Surfers Paradise, Forest Lake, Ipswich, Redcliffe, Caboolture, Logan

Fabian August 29th, 2004, 12:28 AM I downloaded a Seven News Intro from Perth on Friday and it features an aerial shot of Bankwest Tower at night at the very start. I cannot grab a caption of it as I don't know how to do captions of video's.
Also the National News flyover of Sydney is from 1999. The cranes behind Chifley Tower are for Aurora Place, which was under construction during the period. They still use it.
Fabian August 29th, 2004, 10:14 PM The 6pm National Nine News in Sydney has been revamped and will start tonight. The CBD flyover has been ditched and is replaced by an aerial flyover over Sydney Harbour. Jim Waley will now read the news with a live shot of the city skyline from Kirribilli including the Harbour Bridge & Opera House. A camera has been placed in the area to provide a live shot.
The Daily Telegraph has a shot of what it will look like in todays paper in an article discussing the battle of the bulletins.

Mr MacPhisto August 31st, 2004, 10:07 AM There is a Nurofen add on at the moment with a little glowing circle zooming around the CBD of Brisbane. At the end of the add it cruises up the river and in the background (over the expressway) the Brisbane CBD has been stretched to 3 or 4 times it's length.

I never new that! Must look next time.
I know they film heaps of Mitsubishi adds here using several icons - why I don't know because they make the cars in Adelaide.
I did see them filming a commercial the other day for a shoe company at Parliament House - they had a limosine and a guy who emerged from the front to a crowd of people chearing.
They were also filming a commercial in the park with Brisbane as a backdrop today - I think it was probably another Asian commercial, they seem to do alot of those here. Look out for an asian girl with balloons.
jt
Oriolus September 7th, 2004, 04:44 AM I thought I recongised Waterfront Place in that Nurofen ad, but when they zoom out to an aerial it was way different to Brisbane, with skyline stretching for miles.
There were some great skyscraper scenes of Melbourne in The Brush Off the other night - looked like pre Eureka, or at least before it started to rise.
Fabian September 7th, 2004, 08:58 AM I think I've seen a Herron ad set along the Brisbane River with the city skyline in the background with the cyclists wearing herron tablets. I definately remember the one set in Sydney, where the cyclists were sent cycling around the harbourfront at Kirribilli under the harbour bridge with the city skyline and Opera House in the background.
Fabian November 25th, 2004, 10:49 PM I've been watching White Collar Blue and they show the city skyline at least once in each episode from various parts of Southern Sydney (including one from my suburb). If anyone watches it, can they please get a capture :)
Malt November 26th, 2004, 12:31 AM Ive been trying to work out what city that ad for that car is in. The ad where there are the 2 people on the bike and the one person in this small hatchback.. the people on the bike are chasing the car but it gets away and turns up again coming the other direction or something.
There are no skyline shots, just shots in the streets but im still curious.
christarrant November 26th, 2004, 12:44 AM on last nights Amazing race the city of Dubai got a fair bit of scraper exposure, there was an excellent shot of the skyline from the water and it looked like a more compact and taller Gold Coast.
GMAC November 26th, 2004, 02:39 PM With that Nurofen Add, I know it starts in Brisbane with CP1 being the first building it flies around but I always thought the last half was a blend of Bris Melb Syd.
On one of the Movie channels they have at least 4 different promos where movie tape or stars or something flies around either Bris, Melb, Syd or Perth, its pretty cool.
Malt December 8th, 2004, 11:36 AM In that mcdonalds ad where everyones ordering chicken, you can see AMP out the window.. I think its filmed from GPT
zulu69 December 8th, 2004, 01:27 PM Im not actually sure about this but does anyone else think that Governor Phillip Tower is in the Blink 182 music clip 'Always" (great song btw)?? It definately was filmed in Oz and the background doesn't seem to be real, but i swear it looks exactly like GP when it's crown is lit up.

Fabian February 7th, 2005, 08:16 AM Seven News in Sydney now features a realtime shot of the city skyline from a building in the North Sydney area including the harbour bridge. It's a bit disappointing as the buildings of McMahons Point distract the view into the city. I think they should of mounted it from the Optus or Phillips Buildings where the view would of been better.

I think you meant the MLC Tower. Channel Seven until recently used to do alot of interviews with people from an office on the upper levels of the tower. CNBC & Sky News use it sometimes for interviews as well. The views north from the tower is less obtrusive than Sydney Tower (as MLC is in the way).
tayser May 29th, 2005, 06:34 AM Channel 9's static image of Melbourne from Docklands blows - they have a skycam at GTV9 (Richmond) and they should bloody well use it!
Similarly ABC from Ripponlea.

Oriolus September 28th, 2005, 02:03 AM We used to have a thread for this but I can't find it. If anyone does located it let me know and I'll jettison this one.
There's an add for a Yamaha motorbike (the R1 I think) showing in Townsville at the moment. It's been customised by a local dealership so it might not be on anywhere else. Anyway they've got scenes set in London, Paris and Sydney. The Sydney shots are looking down a street, with a "Sydney Stock Exchange" sign on the left and a skyline at the end of the street. The skyline includes Sydney Tower, but also I'm sure I also see Riparian Plaza and CP2 from Brisbane!
MelbourneCity September 28th, 2005, 01:17 PM Well Seven News in Sydney and Melbourne have *LIVE* views of their skylines in their news bulletins.
Melbourne's looks east from New Quay.
Nine News in Sydney and Brisbane have live cams projected on blue screens on to their news. Nine Melb have a fake Melb skyline (its edited).
JayT September 28th, 2005, 03:33 PM Nine News in Sydney and Brisbane have live cams projected on blue screens on to their news. Nine Melb have a fake Melb skyline (its edited).
Only the sky is edited on the Brisbane one. To block out the sun at certain times of the year. Its funny I can stand on my balcony and look at the bridge and see the same cars/trucks/busses on TV at exactly the same time they are going behind the news readers.
This Block of flats is just up the street from me – if you look just under the roof line you will notice a camera, its for Channel 9 news.

It's Cook + Philip Park in Sydney. There's an underground/submerged pool just where the ladies in the background are. The "brown box" building is the old Pacific Power building (can't remember the name of it now, although I think it's just called "201 Elizabeth Street").
It's adjacent to St Mary's Cathedral.

Fabian February 27th, 2007, 07:22 AM With National Nine News in Brisbane, have they tilted the camera to the left, because I have seen Riparian further to the left near the edge and there's more of the Storey Bridge?
It appears they have also zoomed in on the city skyline.
I like the new backdrop for Seven News of the team with the city from Southbank. I remember last year they played around with two shots of the storey bridge with the city skyline, which I thought they had zoomed in too much. one had Aurora almost complete and the other complete (and sunny).

Lowie101 September 4th, 2008, 03:49 PM Right now on TV some great skyline work on The Strip.
Pretty much the only thing worth watching on this diplorable show.
Fabian September 4th, 2008, 11:18 PM I watched it last night, lots of aerials and not to mention the story being centred on the murder of a window cleaner who fell to his death.
tic September 5th, 2008, 01:50 AM Pretty much the only thing worth watching on this diplorable show.
I probably would not call it deplorable but it was pretty average (apart from the great scenery).
Unfortunately Australian commercial networks produce bland drama - The Strip is more of the same, like All Saints, City Homicide etc.
Underbelly was very good, but lets be realistic, the script was written for the producers of the show - you can't beat a real life crime story.
ABC on the other hand, continues to produce (and import) very good drama.
Sigh - Australian TV is very average.
nazor September 5th, 2008, 02:42 AM ^^ too true. i haven't watch Australian TV in over a year ....
hayds September 5th, 2008, 03:15 AM the strip was very average, its funny -- if they didnt keep changing to people surfing between the storylines you wouldnt know it was even on the coast lol. Maybe they need to cut a deal with surf patrol to get some beach action happening
basically crap show for now, it seems like they are trying to milk the highrises as much as they can between sequences and do ya notice the camera does this rippling/weird effect when they show the aerials which ruins it i think.
tic September 5th, 2008, 06:43 AM The female lead actress is pretty woeful. Frankie J Holden and that ex Mcleod's Daughters guy are reasonably good actors.
I'll give it another 2 views before I write it off. It may warm up.
Probably needs more boobies.
Lowie101 September 5th, 2008, 10:08 AM It just needs to stop trying to be CSI Miami. It's not, it's a cheap rip off. I couldn't help but lol at the glances into the distance and all the one liners. Not to mention the 70's porn background music

Mickeebee September 9th, 2008, 09:47 AM /\/\ pretty much, but that show was extra bad. Could've been really good, i love the idea of setting a crime series on the GC.
