While visiting the site for Burj Dubai I saw a crane repeatedly dropping a large concrete block with metal spike. On the same bit of sand. Anyone any ideas what he was doing?

I will try and stick some pics of it here.

Its called Dynamic compation. Its way of compacting an area that has clay base soil conditions. If you drive a roller over it you move theground around, when you compact it like this to about 98%MOSH density they you wont get movement. This has to be repeated hundreds of time all over the site.
