I dont remember seeing a lake or waterfront at the Trade centre 1 area.
Looks cool though, and it bears an uncanny resemblance i think to the millenium airport hotel at garhoud. Thanx for the info krazy.

Dunno if it was because of this thread or what. Last night I dreamt the city was flooded.

They're playing around with water a lot. Jumeira Lakes, Dubai Marina, Healthcare City, Burj Dubai.. they all have water.. and lots of it. Whatever land they're making with the Palm Islands they're losing by these artificial lakes and marina.

Maybe that was the idea from the begining. I have no problem with that though.

From todays papers:

"Private Property Management, another development partner, has shortlisted bidders for project management consultancy for a Dh550 million, 350-room Conrad Dubai Hotel, Hilton's deluxe brand of hotels. The hotel will be located on a plot between Fairmont Hotel and API World Tower on Shaikh Zayed Road.

A main contractor for the project is expected to be chosen during the first half of next year. Site work for the project will start in July with completion set for 2007."

Still no specific details on the cost, height , etc. But atleast we know that its not a small structure with a lake as was suggested earlier!

now we have two threads for towers/hotels being built on the same plot!!

first one is the conrad hotel and the second is the unnamed tower with 108 floors
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=131705

i don't understand anything

how can conrad hotel with 350 rooms have 108 floors! never!

or are these two different projects being built between api and fairmont???

I think that the conrad will be built on the site at between 30-40 floors and that the 108 story tower was a proposal that may not go ahead.I might make the 108 story one a PROPOSAL only

Face81
September 26th, 2004, 03:03 PM
My source is the newspaper. I think the project Trances was refering to migght be at another location....or possibly the two towers will come up side by side? :dunno: It would be a tight fit, but it is possible.

And Trances even noticed seperate piling work going on right next to Damas Tower.....so that could be it too as Damas could not possibly be that wide. Anyone else seen that?

There is only 1 plot here as I have seen the zoning plan for this area, remember there is also a link road next to API tower which cannot be built on.
Face 81-I have noticed the new excavation next to Damas and ite plot footprint is too small to support a 100 odd story tower.

flo, conrad is one of the best hotel chains in the world, comparable to 4 seasons, grand and park hyatts and ritz carlton, but a bit more exclusive

there are only 22 conrad hotels worldwide with a handful of new hotel projects, one of them in dubai

Firms invited to bid for Abu Dhabi resort
CONSTRUCTION UAE
3 Nov 2006

A consortium of local private developers has invited selected companies to prequalify for the main construction package for a major mixed-use resort on Abu Dhabi island. The Lagoon Club project involves the construction of a five-star hotel with 350 guest rooms and 150 serviced apartments, an office tower with a built-up area of 45,000 square metres, a 2,000-square-metre shopping mall, a three-level basement car park and a health club with a built-up area of 2,500 square metres.

The UK’s Broadway Malayan is the concept architect. The local office of KEO International Consultants is the design consultant. UK-based Currie & Brown is the quantity surveyor. The UK’s Mace International is the project manager. The hotel will be operated by Conrad, the luxury brand of US-based Hilton International.

A second Conrad hotel is also planned by Abu Dhabi-based Private Property Management in Dubai. US-based Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart (SRSS) is the consultant. Located on Shaikh Zayed road between the API World Tower and Fairmont Hotel, the original scope for the project involved the construction of a 350-room hotel (MEED 6:8:04).

I like it a lot, and that's not just because I'm American. ;) It has a restrained design, which will help the more flamboyant and original designs around it stand out even more. This is something Dubai needs more of: simple, but elegant buildings that create density, not clutter. That allows the more flashy designs to shine without competing against each other.

On a side note, I'd gladly take this in Los Angeles in a heartbeat.

I like it a lot, and that's not just because I'm American. ;) It has a restrained design, which will help the more flamboyant and original designs around it stand out even more. This is something Dubai needs more of: simple, but elegant buildings that create density, not clutter. That allows the more flashy designs to shine without competing against each other.

perfectly said.... i prefer more 'classics' like this, even if they look out of place for dxb bcos of its excess tacky designs... nice blue facade and not a clash with neighboring buildings like some parts of SZR with pink next to gold next to blue reflective glass abu dhabi style

The tower's pretty good but am not as keen on it compared to some of the others.

Some newly built ones or proposed which I think are better include park place, millenium tower, rolex tower, al sharq, al yacoub (only kidding :D). Of course some stuff nearby like the lighthouse tower completely blows this away.

Anyway, this is certainly not crap but we'll have to see how it turns out.

Another project which could turn out really nice could be the tiara towers but it all depends on how the glass will look like in real life

how can a 550 room hotel only take up 19 floors
how can the rest be offices?

550 rooms in a conrad will take up the whole tower!!!
maybe in the podium there are a few offices

but there will mainly be the 30 meeting rooms and the 2 ballrooms!

Can someone explain why pilings 1) need to be capped 2) why they need to be buried and then dug up again? It seems to a time waster. Isn't it hot and dry enough to just simply put them in without caps and burying? Hopefully there is a logical explanation. Perhaps some sort of engineering requirement?

No, it's not dry enough ... it's not actually dry at all. ;)

Plus is not that the pile are prepared to some yards somewhere and brought to the construction site and buried there. They are cast on site: They drill a well on the ground and either put inside a steel tube or fill in the hole with a certain liquid material for not leting the walls around it collapse. Then they lower inside the steel caissons and then pump the concrete, that being heavier it replaces that other material, pushing it up and out of the hole. The liquid material is collected and reused.

Now why the caps are also buried, that is for logistic reasons: You can't move people and machineries around the site if there are columns of concrete sticking out everywhere, you can't even cast them in the first place. Then is the issue with underground levels. You can fully dig the hole first and then start pilling but placing machineries and materials in and out of a deep hole on the ground is not really cheap, not cheaper then just casting the piles deep underneath, sometimes 10 - 20 meters or more beneath the surface and then excavate to reach their caps.

This is from what I have observed for the last 4 - 5 years in a few hundreds construction sites I've come accross. We have here professionals why can explain it better, especially on technical terms.

barrak
February 27th, 2009, 04:17 AM
Thank for the explanation AltinD. I can understand the need to perform other tasks while waiting for the pilings to cure and be ready for use. I am not a construction engineer and was just wondering. It seemed to me to an inefficient way to do things. I enjoy your comments. They help to understand what is going on.:)

Interior contracting company Depa on Wednesday announced it has secured a AED207 million contract to fit out all guest rooms, suites and public areas in the Conrad Hotel Dubai, set for completion in mid 2011.

Depa’s contract at the luxury hotel, which will be built on Sheikh Zayed Road, includes work on all 500 guest rooms and suites and lobbies, executive lounges, two ballrooms, 11 meeting rooms and a business centre.

Mohannad Sweid, chief executive officer, Depa said:“This contract win further strengthens our backlog position and Depa continues to be on target in terms of profit and revenue growth for 2009.”

Nadim Akhrass, managing director of Operations, added: “Despite the difficult wider economic environment, there are still high-end projects. This is yet another exciting project to be undertaking and we are looking forward to working closely with all parties involved.”

Depa has won contracts for fit-outs at some of the most iconic hotels in the UAE including Burj Al Arab, Emirates Palace and Atlantis the Palm.

^^ The glass facade appears almost dead metallic here. I prefer the more transparent look an the renders.

Here the back side at night, taken from Gerald Donovans gigapano "Dubai at night from Jumeirah"
at gigapan.org (http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/69802/).
Conrad Hotel must be over 200m now, but still far from topping out.

It is designed to be 50 floors of concrete, so it must be close. The rest of the height will be on steel framing enclosing the cooling towers and supporting the BMU.

well, compare it with next door park place 234 m, it should be above 200 m by now. It will be higher than park tower when topped out.

Another panorama by Gerald Donovans at gigapan.org gives tribute to Emirates Towers (http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/72530/).
Conrad Hotel, partially hidden by Park Place is only a detail in it, that I've worked out here.
Now the first setback is visible, and 3rd next slab floor is under way in concrete, this doesn't look like steel framing.
Core should be close to last setback already. :)

In fact, glass has got up some 5 floors in over 3 weeks, and looks like there are more top tier floors now. :)

i wuldnt exactly call it black but its more of a blue-grey colour to me. its still in the blue family...honeslty Tiara United Towers needs to re-start and FAST! we shuld start a fund! :P and they BETTER stick with their ORIGINAL facade colour!

The fact that it's not the standard blue is good enough for me :D

RBut i think there's a little bit of the tower's top part with 3-4 floors showing right of the blrry vertical sign beam. :)

The core was topped a few weeks back and now the formwork is completely removed.

By the fact that steel columns were erected on top, probably the concrete work on the main floors (2 or so levels behind the top of the core) should be done too.

But i think there's a little bit of the tower's top part with 3-4 floors showing right of the blrry vertical sign beam. :)

The top part, being a setback actually, has 4 - 5 regular floors with the core being the equivalent of 2 or so levels on top.

Someone earlier mentioned steel structure on top to encase the BMU, and as I mentioned on my previous post, there are steel columns erected on top, so most probabkyall the floors have been built already.

The glass selected was actually pewter.

Someone earlier mentioned steel structure on top to encase the BMU, and as I mentioned on my previous post, there are steel columns erected on top, so most probabkyall the floors have been built already.

The top four floors are executive offices.

The steel columns will take a sub-frame to which stone will be mounted. The BMU will not run around the perimeter of the steel structure but rather in a diagonal straight line across the top with a telescopic boom.

For you guys that live in Dubai, at the rear of the hotel you should notice a secondary structure going up. This is the robotic (fully automated) carpark. When it gets to level 6 a landscaped deck will span between it and the main building. It will be the only one on SZR as far as I know. The steel trusses will be massive. Keep your eyes peeled.

Thanks for posting the pics.

In the top pic, the 'L' shaped area of exposed framework at the top will be clad in stone, same as on the sides.

In the the bottom photo, I see that they have clad the curtain wall from about level seven upwards on the rear of the building. This means that the automated carpark structure is incomplete. When it is, there will be some large steel trusses spanning from the carpark to the building. This will be the landscaped pool deck.

I guess the big question now is whether or not they will add a sign to the top of the building as the renders show?

It will be the third after the Dusit Thani and AwR/21st Century Tower....
