View Full Version : LUSAIL CITY - Lusail Iconic Stadium (86,250) - 2022 FIFA WC
rodem October 7th, 2010, 07:01 AM The Lusail Stadium in Lusail City, a new development north of capital Doha, will have a capacity of more than 86,000.
The emirate state’s bid organisers plan to use the stadium to host the opening match and final should Qatar win the right to stage the tournament.
The design draws on Qatar’s cultural heritage, including a traditional dhow sail.
It also has a fully retractable roof as well as solar cooling technology that will cool the stadium to around 27 degrees C. In June and July, when the tournament will be played, the average daytime temperature is around 40 degrees C.
It will have shade across the entire pitch and will feature the world’s largest cable-net roof. The stadium will also have its own metro station.

mattec October 7th, 2010, 07:25 AM will this be built even after Qatar is eliminated from the race to host the WC?
Wezza October 7th, 2010, 10:51 AM 15km from Doha city centre, so it's in Doha then?
Enslaved October 7th, 2010, 11:17 AM I must protest! Sick design! My vote for Qatar!

Benn October 7th, 2010, 11:28 PM I wonder about such a transparent roof in that sort of climate. The transparency seems nice visually, but something more like a white teflon roof with a wide ventilation gap would seem far more ideal in a desert situation.

The Roof is retractable + The stadium will have eco-friendly cooling technologies which will be able to reduce temperatures of 40+C to 27C.
Which part of this stadium are modular and how will it be post-World Cup, assuming Qatar wins?
Most probably, non. This stadium has great plans post world cup of being used for Social, Entertainment and Cultural events (Not to mention Finals and the possibility of many future events).

Are you familiar with an hotel in Abu Dhabi with a large construction around it, almost 70% of it that has several tens on thousands glass pieces? And it is so cleverly designed that it has a natural ventilation effect? I beileve that this stadium might have similar solution.

AndreasBerlin October 30th, 2010, 03:44 PM Isn't the population of Lusail currently less than 86,000...? That makes this stadium look very stupid, despite its cool architecture
Qatar Son 333 October 30th, 2010, 05:43 PM ^^ Its considered an extension to Doha city (+1 Million) but Lusail city (The project) will have 200,000 when its complete.
The stadium will be built next to a racing circuit, currently has MotoGP races. F1 in the near future.

So is it part of Doha or not??? Sorry I am confused. So how many stadiums are in Doha as part of the world cup bid?? And how many people live in Lusail city at the momet?
Wezza November 9th, 2010, 10:39 PM Yes it's part of Doha.
Arthurlp10 November 10th, 2010, 03:39 AM It is interesting that Brazilian flags also appear in the video.

But the Qatar population is predicted to fall to only 1 mil by 2017.

Your source ? Qatar's population is 1.7 Million today, by 2016 it would be 2.6 Million and more than 3 million by 2022.
Qatar's population is on a constant rise due to an ever growing local population and also the expat population.

Trelawny December 8th, 2010, 12:43 AM Glass roof wot wot! Still the stadia looks like a 60,000 or so stadia. Why does it look so small compared to Soccer City which is just a couple or so seats bigger? Nice stadium though for the world cup finals.
Benn December 8th, 2010, 04:32 AM It really doesn't look like more than 70,000 in any way, but its important not to put too much stock into competition renderings, just think of the early renders for South Africa or Brazil's vs what was built/ is being built.

This photos is an outdated rendering of the VTB Stadium and Arena in Moscow, pretty far from Lusail ;)

No one to date had anything quite like that roof. In fact, from what I know, it's still not fully evaluated whether it will or will not be done at all.

I thought uoi meant the current stadium, could you show any images of the concept then? I lived with the vision that, as Qatari officials said, there was no roof of that kind anywhere as it is fully retractable while cable-supported.
1772 November 20th, 2011, 09:53 AM Nope sorry, Tampa Bay Rays had a sail-like render. Not transparent.
Looking forwards to Lusail City though!
