World Trade Center Construction

The World Trade Center Began its life as a series of proposals for a major downtown development in the 1950s. By the mid 1960s, a site was in place, designs were chosen and clearance and construction began around 1967. The twin towers were finally completed in 1973 and the entire WTC development was finished in 1978 with the Vista International Hotel. This is a thread devoted to images of the World Trade Center's creation. Enjoy!

World Trade Center Area 1966-68

The WTC site as it appeared in the mid 1960s. Known as "Radio Row" the low rise buildings dating to the 1850s were, by 1960, a disheveled lot of derelict and low rent repair and radio shops. The two higher buildings at 30 and 50 Church St. were the Hudson Terminal Buildings that stood above the PATH/subway tracks. And they stood squarely in the sights of Robert Moses and the Port Authority.

Not quite on topic, but you wouldn't also have photos of the construction of the WFC, and in extension, the whole of Battery city?
In particular, the creation of the landfills over the old piers.

I noticed you included one or two, would be nice to see more :)

Great job on the thread.

The World Trade Center in early renderings

Before the final design by Minoru Yamasaki was chosen, several proposals, sites and configurations were pitched to Robert Moses and the Port Authority. Below are some of these renders and mockups as well as the final design.

"Radio Row" and the WTC site in early photographs

The neighborhood bounded by Vesey, Church, Liberty, and West Streets was no dead zone. It was a lively, if shabby mix of small shops, cafes, and old mercantile rowhouses along the SE corner of Lower Manhattan. And although Wall St. was close by, the area known as "Radio Row" was a world onto itself.

Love the thread. I have most of the pictures, but that's because I've been going nuts and saving pictures on the original WTC for years now. Only a matter of time before flickr/photobucket/whatever users shut down their accounts, are deleted, etc.

Love the thread. I have most of the pictures, but that's because I've been going nuts and saving pictures on the original WTC for years now. Only a matter of time before flickr/photobucket/whatever users shut down their accounts, are deleted, etc.

It's nice to have stuff in one location for the users of the board. Good work!

Not to worry: Many libraries and historical archives are just beginning to scan their holdings into online sites like Flickr. So as individuals (who often have mundane stuff anyways) lose interest, the powerhouse documention will be coming on stream. :)

Windows on the World was a complex of venues at the top floors (106th and 107th) of the North Tower of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan that included a restaurant, Windows on the World, a smaller restaurant called Wild Blue, and a bar called The Greatest Bar on Earth, as well as rooms for private functions. Developed by restaurateur Joe Baum and designed initially by Warren Platner, Windows on the World occupied 50,000 square feet of space in the North Tower. The restaurants operated from April 1976 until 2001 when they were destroyed in the September 11 attacks. (wikipedia)

The hotel had 22 stories above grade and 6 stories below grade (labeled B1 through B6.) The roof parapet line was approximately 242 feet above West Street. The first level below grade provided loading docks, building services, and other functions for the hotel. The other levels below grade were part of the overall WTC complex and provided parking space. The ground level housed the hotel lobby and ballroom. The two stories above the ground level lobby were occupied by restaurants and conference facilities. The next 18 stories accommodated the approximately 825 guest suites. A health club and mechanical services were located on the top floor of the building. The building was designed in 1978/1979 by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), architects.

The 360 ft. antenna mast was built in 1978 and rebuilt in 1999 by Dielectric Inc. to accommodate DTV. I'll see if I can find images of its construction. ;)

I had no idea the Antenna was rebuilt or worked on in 1990. I've seen so many pics of the Twin Towers, but never have I seen work on it that year. But I do know they worked on it in the early 2000s.

The 1999 renovation wasn't that major. They really just installed some new antenna arrays in the existing mast. It wouldn't have been more than a few days of exterior work to install them. Most of the work would have been internal.

Battery Park City

http://nydailynews.com/img/2009/09/16/alg_battery_park_city.jpg
1982

Battery Park City is a 92-acre planned community at the southwestern tip of lower Manhattan in New York City, United States. The land upon which it stands was created on the Hudson River using 1.2 million cubic yards of soil and rocks excavated during the construction of the World Trade Center and certain other construction projects, as well as from sand dredged from New York Harbor off Staten Island. The neighborhood, which is the site of the World Financial Center along with numerous housing, commercial and retail buildings, is named for adjacent Battery Park.

In 1968, the New York State Legislature created the Battery Park City Authority to oversee development. The New York State Urban Development Corporation and ten other public agencies were also involved in the development project. For the next several years, the BPCA made slow progress. In 1969, it unveiled a master plan for the area, and in 1972 issued $200 million in bonds to fund construction efforts. Landfill material from construction of the World Trade Center was used to add land. Cellular cofferdams were constructed to retain the material. By 1976 the landfill was completed; in many cases, the pre-existing piers were simply buried. Construction efforts ground to a halt for nearly two years beginning in 1977, as a result of city-wide financial hardships. In 1979, the title to the landfill was transferred from the city to the Battery Park City Authority, which financially restructured itself and created a new, more viable master plan, designed by Alex Cooper and Stanton Eckstut. The design of BPC to some degree reflects the values of vibrant city neighborhoods championed by Jane Jacobs. The Urban Land Institute awarded the Battery Park City Master Plan its 2010 Heritage Award, for having "facilitated the private development of 9.3 million square feet of commercial space, 7.2 million square feet of residential space, and nearly 36 acres of open space in lower Manhattan, becoming a model for successful large-scale planning efforts and marking a positive shift away from the urban renewal mindset of the time."

While development of individual tracts or blocks was somewhat hopscotched, Battery Park City was essentially broken down to four major components: the north section of parks, apartments and liveable communities; The World Financial Center and Battery Park Marina, a massive commercial office development designed by Caesar Pelli and Assoc. tied into the World Trade Center; Gateway Towers, the first BPC development which consisted of apartment towers arranged in the classic 'tower and plaza' configuation; and the southern section along West St. of hotels and apartments developed well into the 1990s.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s the site hosted Creative Time's landmark Art on the Beach sculpture exhibitions. On September 23, 1979, the landfill was the site of an anti-nuclear rally attended by 200,000 people.

Construction began on the first residential building in 1980, followed in 1981 with the start of construction on the World Financial Center. Olympia and York, of Toronto, was named as the developer for the World Financial Center in 1981, who then hired Cesar Pelli as the lead architect. By 1985, construction was completed and the World Financial Center saw its first tenants.

Throughout the 1980s, the Battery Park City Authority oversaw a great deal of construction, including the entire Rector Place neighborhood and the river Esplanade. It was during this period that current City Planning Department Director Amanda Burden worked on Battery Park City. During the 1980s a total of 13 buildings were constructed. In the early 1990s, Battery Park City became the new home of the Stuyvesant High School. During the 1990s an additional 6 buildings were added to the neighborhood. By the turn of the 21st century, Battery Park City was mostly completed, with the exception of some ongoing construction on West Street.

The construction of the twin towers was more impressive and massive than the new WTC. This towers did show americas power, but i am not really convinced by the new building. I do not want the exact twin towers to be rebuilt, but something massive not only to remember the ones that lost their lives but to honor them and i am not getting that feeling right now seems like new WTC is just a group of buildings that are not the tallest ones in the United States

First post here. Ive been keeping an eye on this particular thread and have noticed some posters asking for some shots of the antenna being erected. If you google peter b kaplan stock photography and link surf to the " height workers" category, you will find a few of them in there, taken some 1600 feet above Lower Manhattan.
