A classic case of money doesn't buy him class and good taste.

Brizer October 16th, 2010, 06:45 AM Why isn't the Indian Press all over this for its vulgar and obscene display of self-indulgent wealth in a country where millions are homeless and dying of starvation every day? I suppose they think he's a great philanthropist because he employs 400 staff...
The building isn't ugly so much in itself as in what it represents.
thewallpart6 October 16th, 2010, 06:53 AM Possibly still in celebration of 2nd place in Commonwealth Games. Or he is the richest man in Asia. A proud achievement. Bl Chinese.
bwistle October 16th, 2010, 01:45 PM If the building had a normal purpose it would be great.
Master of Disguise October 16th, 2010, 06:12 PM Humnn....It's actually due to show off fight or ego fight between these 2 brothers Anil & Mukesh....
Have heard that his brother Anil too will be joining in...!!! One more huge and a better skyscraper on its way in India.....and knowing Anil Ambani....it will be more futuristic and something special...
And guys if you talk about them investing in some social cause...yes they are..to your disappointment..
Mukesh and Anil both have opened many orphanages , Schools and give free education to people who cannot afford one....Adopting kids etc etc.....
So know their history before launching on them....
offcourse they are not as good when it comes to the other GIANT TATA.....that guy has spend half of his fortune donating in educational research...Building schools in villages...creating employment in rural area's ...helping the medical industry etc etc etc....
Mukesh Ambani is spending alot on nonsense thing..like getting the most expensive IPL team..Mumbai Indians.....this 27 level skyscraper....etc etc...But you forget that RELIANCE Industries in India & Abroad has created huge number of jobs...
thewallpart6 October 16th, 2010, 07:15 PM Tax deductions for charitable donations. Win-win situation nevertheless.
Adam from Oz October 16th, 2010, 07:25 PM "Designed" on the back of a napkin over a very brief business lunch?
thewallpart6 October 16th, 2010, 08:28 PM Over a banana leaf.
540_804 October 16th, 2010, 09:10 PM :puke::puke::puke::puke::puke: wtf??? and 630 million??? It must have one hell of an interior then...
The 630million GBP (or ~ 1billion USD) is only the VALUE...not the cost.
It only cost ~80million to build. The additional value is due to increases in values in Mumbai and, of course, valuations/appraisals are only estimates.
The building is not horrible BUT IT IS RIDICULOUS A MAN SPEND ALL HIS MONEY IN A BUILDING ONLY FOR HIS FAMILY AND HIS STAFF WHEN INDIA AND ALL OVER THE WORLD HAS WORSE PROBLEMS WHY DIDN'T HE BUILD A BIG MANSION AND THE MONEY OF THE BUILDING COULD BE USED FOR BUILD POPULAR HOUSES IN MUMBAY,BUILD HOSPITALS IN AFRICA,SCHOOLS IN PAKISTAN WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF......UNTIL SOCIAL PROJECTS IN BRAZIL
He didn't spend all of his money. He's worth something like $29 billion. Assuming he paid $77 million (which is what has been cited as the true cost), that means he paid only 2.655% of his net worth on this property.
I actually quite like the building itself, however its purpose is obscene.
Why isn't the Indian Press all over this for its vulgar and obscene display of self-indulgent wealth in a country where millions are homeless and dying of starvation every day? I suppose they think he's a great philanthropist because he employs 400 staff...

To the two above:
While it is a bit extreme and self-indulgent, I don't really buy the feigned outrage. Are we really supposed to expect any wealthy person to become personally responsible for all of the societal ills like homelessness and starvation? While I think it is good (and perhaps there is a bit of moral obligation to help those who are less fortunate) if they do, we can't crucify a guy because he wants to build himself a nice house with money that he earned.
When is the last time you bought something for yourself when you could have used the money to feed someone?
SoulvisionQ1 October 17th, 2010, 11:07 AM I think the Indian caste system is absolutely disgusting. Its got the most limited social stratification system.
So many people are stuck in poverty because of traditional ways. At least China has raised a bulk of its lower class into middle class.
Indictable October 17th, 2010, 11:11 AM Adopting kids etc etc.....
All 3 of them.
Marathaman October 17th, 2010, 11:16 AM lol@fake outrage. Your entire country is a giant fortress to keep poor people out.
yousername October 17th, 2010, 01:25 PM lol@fake outrage. Your entire country is a giant fortress to keep poor people out.
As opposed to most wealthy Western countries, who accept povos with open arms? I think not.
Australia is lucky enough to have more people willing to move then the government allows. It therefore makes sense to take the ones who will do best for the country rather than ones who may put a strain on services.

You are missing the point. To me it's all about context. I think with that level of wealth, construction a building with 600 personal staff is simply over indulgent and excessive, especially in the context of a country with such poverty like India, its just crude. Another example is that Arabian Sheik who has placed an order for an A380.
There is a difference between building yourself a nice house, and construction a 150m+ tower.
Marathaman October 17th, 2010, 03:16 PM ^That's 600 jobs right there. Far more useful than charity work.
Master of Disguise October 17th, 2010, 04:02 PM Yup, Maratha......nice point...600 jobs created....
Locke October 17th, 2010, 06:08 PM Yup, Maratha......nice point...600 jobs created....
Lol, he guy's practically a saint! So good of him to employ 600 people to clean up after him, I'm sure he's got someone who sole job is to wipe his ass. I think even the maharaja's showed more restraint.
It would be obscene in a western country (imagine this tower on the skyline of say, Perth). It's particularly obscene in a country with so much poverty like India.
Not sure why you feel compelled to defend the guy, no one gets that rich without screwing a lot of people over.
Course no ones says you can't have nice things in life, but at some point, after you are beyond rich and beyond filthy rich, do you maybe just maybe stop to think 'hey, maybe I'm being a little bit of an a-hole here and might make this a little bit less in your face'.
Nice view from the roof though:

Sir, You need to know the history of this guy before saying this.....
His Father, Dhirubhai Ambani..was a great man...he solely lifted millions from lower class to middle class with his business strategy...He is a very respected man in this country.....Again Ambani's are not as good as the TATA's still they has over a million employees ...and they are paid handsomely..
Anyways this building is still not finished...wait for 2 more months to get the final view.....and guys seriously what do you think...
Are INDIANS dying of starvation....we are poor...we don't have money to feed ourself.....stop being a stereotype....India does have the strongest middle class...and poverty level are coming down fast.....
ahhh come out of the decade old world guys..seriously...!!!
and for god sake stop trusting these media reports...they just exaggerate to sell their stuff..!!! India is the fastest growing economy .....with continuously improving infrastructure all over its cities....
You saw Delhi does feel different from say what it was decade ago...CWG2010..!!!
anyways not defending this guy for spending so much when not needed...and surrounding this scraper are no slums.....ALTAMOUNT ROAD is one of the costliest address in the whole world...He from his rooms will get the complete and clear view of the Arabian Sea....
Locke October 17th, 2010, 06:36 PM Well if you have that much money though you give more to charity, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates are asking billionaires to give half of what they own to charity, and they are expanding this to India http://givingpledge.org/ (this still leaves everyone comfortably filthy rich). When this guy does that I'll respect him, he's got 29 billion so I'm sure he could spare a buck or two and still be able to afford to supersize at McDonalds.
yousername October 17th, 2010, 06:37 PM Lol, he guy's practically a saint! So good of him to employ 600 people to clean up after him, I'm sure he's got someone who sole job is to wipe his ass. I think even the maharaja's showed more restraint.

Wot he said
deranged October 17th, 2010, 07:15 PM You wouldn't want to be the one to construct a building blocking his view...
Marathaman October 17th, 2010, 10:15 PM This thread is reaching epic levels of retardation. I won't even try to correct all the ridiculous BS being bandied about in this thread but just a couple of things..
Those whinging about caste system - the Ambanis are not from a privileged background (or caste). If anything, their story is an example of how someone with very humble origins can achieve anything. If this were government money, the outrage would be justified but it's wealth that he has created and he has every right to spend it whichever way he wants to (after paying the requisite taxes). The company is involved in charity as well like most big industrial houses in India, but ultimately, charity is a choice not an obligation.
swifty78 October 18th, 2010, 03:49 AM Still a crap building tho... and yep Slumdog Billionaire lol
Melb_aviator October 18th, 2010, 04:14 AM Why isn't the Indian Press all over this for its vulgar and obscene display of self-indulgent wealth in a country where millions are homeless and dying of starvation every day? I suppose they think he's a great philanthropist because he employs 400 staff...

Apparently they had a go at him for being an introvert and not showing off more. I guess he shut them up:)
invincible October 18th, 2010, 06:07 AM I think this whole idea is stupid. What exactly does such an extravagant, tasteless display of wealth achieve? Employing 600 menial staff doesn't achieve anything or create a legacy.
Sure, he has money and can spend it however he likes but this for one is just not a good way to go about it. There's no grace in it at all. Look at billionaires like Warren Buffet or Carlos Slim - they don't go around parading their wealth but actually pride themselves on their frugality.
city_thing October 18th, 2010, 12:27 PM I actually kinda like it...
Who cares how much it cost? It's his money, he can do as he pleases.
jarkti October 18th, 2010, 12:54 PM I for one like it :)
If I had that much money I'd do the same thing!
I'd love to own my own skyscraper! it would be insane!
location isnt that great though :)
thewallpart6 October 18th, 2010, 03:02 PM You can still sign up to be one of the 600 maids. I'm sure he would allow an expat to be a live-in.

One word to describe this man and his building: Disgusting! :bash:
If he is so rich and kind surely he wouldve realized what he is doing is a waste and an embrassement to India, moreover it just paints an ugly mental picture of India and its people for foreigners!
